A lost recruit; Faye to start?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
You’re right Techsters, Cedric Everson’s falling out with the football program is not as simple as him failing to return phone calls, but it’s not much more complex than that symptom of bigger problem. Lose a commit, shoot the messenger, huh? “Fire up the hounds, Buzz; we gotta go whack a hack!”
He hasn’t been solid in his commitment. Period. He’s been difficult for coaches to reach, waffled in much of what he says when he is reached, changed schedules, been unclear in his explanations of some things, and so forth. See a picture taking shape?
There have been other symptoms that set him apart from the test of Tech’s class, which is comprised of kids who already are remarkably close to one another even though they haven’t started school yet (except for Morgan and Threet). Every recruit has at least one or two fellow commits that he seems to stay in touch with, text message, etc. Some kids stay in touch with several future teammates.
Ced was a black sheep. Didn’t talk to anybody, was difficult to read, predict, count on, etc. No need going into more detail about a player who wasn’t even yet in the program. Everson was not fitting.
Enough. He’s a kid. He’s very talented. Perhaps he’ll be a fine college player. But not at Tech.
Gailey is supposed to make an in-home visit tonight with Baton Rouge defensive end Jason Peters, and on Sunday with Oxnard, Calif., athlete Malachi Lewis.
Hoops …
At Maryland tonight, Paul Hewitt said he’s likely to move Mouhammad Faye back into the starting lineup at wing after starting Mario West there at North Carolina. Both are defense-oriented, but Faye was taken out of the starting lineup against the Tar Heels chiefly because he had been playing tentatively. And, he had 10 turnovers in the three previous ACC games.
Mario doesn’t turn the ball over, but his offense, or lack thereof (didn’t score from the field at UNC, and passed up several wide open shots after missing his first couple) some exceptions in other games notwithstanding. He’ll continue to play plenty.

Amen, brother Matt. Bravo to the Tech staff to recognize the situation and move in spite of the kid’s obvious talent, although probably spurred on by the limited number available, i.e. can’t afford to waste one.

WHAT IS THE OVER-UNDER ON TECH TURNOVERS TONIGHT? 30! HANG ON TO THE BALL AND WE MIGHT ACTUALLY WIN A ROAD GAME! IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THAT.
GO JACKETS!

Maybe we will finally win a road game for the first time in a year and a half - Maryland hasn’t been real strong this year.
Shame about Everson. I’m sure the coaches can tell who won’t be a good fit on the team, but he looked to be a talented corner. Wish him luck wherever he ends up…

Matt, don’t listen to the naysayers. You do a great job of covering Tech and Tech recruiting and we appreciate it!

The last road win was in November 2006 against Memphis. Most games so far this year have been at home.

the win against memphis was not a road win because it was on a neutral court. Today, that will change though. Go Jackets!

I think it says a lot, and most of it good, that Tech has pulled offers on two very talented recruits (Jacoby Monroe) that were not holding up their end up the bargain. I for one am glad we are having a great recruiting season while at the same not straying too far the other way and getting athletes that are not going to fit in. Its not the overall quality you recruit, but the overall quality you ultimately end up being able to put on the field. Given this is our best class under Chan, possibly ever, the future looks very bright.

I think it is great that conduct unbecoming a team situation is being called out. A lot of these players go a career with no clue on their selfish conduct having a negative effect on a team. A great thing about college if you let it, is it lifts you above the small thinking. I think of that poor running back from Ohio State a few years back. Who was he listening to.

Matt,
You’re doing a great job covering GT…thanks for all the updates!
Everson is probably a great kid, but….unfortunately….it sounds like he’s got a dad who’s trying to be an agent. If he was being more DAD and truly doing what was in the best interest of his SON, he would’ve seen to it that his SON had fulfilled the academic requirements very plainly spelled out to them in order to be accepted by GT.
Truly hate it for the kid. I really think he wanted to come to Tech. Hopefully, he can rise above his parenting when all’s said and done.

It is now official. The Final Four team was a fluke.
I’ve had it! This B’ball program is a joke. Forget the NCAA Tourny. The NIT is iffy this year at best.
The fact of the matter is we are bringing in average to below average talent, being instructed by a coach in the same category. He is all talk.
We’re not just losing on the road…..we’re getting our freakin’ brains beat in. Any road game we play is over at the “10 minute” mark.
What on earth has happened to GA TECH B’ball??????????????

Dear Dante21,
Lay off the dubies, man…they warp your memory and sense of history!
Why do we keep forgetting that:
a) We ARE in the best b-ball conference in the land (and, NO, I won’t get into some lame debate about which conference dominates….good news with b-ball is it all gets settled neatly in March, thank GOD!)
b) We are playing LOTS of frosh and sophs….assuming they all don’t bolt next year (and they won’t), the future is bright (sorry, Dante, we don’t get Duke or UNC classes, but Hewitt has done a pretty solid job recruiting).
c) It’s actually a GOOD thing you expect us in the Final Four each year (something must be right). This team can still get in the Big Dance (even if on the bubble, based on the media hounds, due to schedule, excitement, and conference dominance).
d) You must NOT watch Tech sports in the Fall… it’s not like this team has more talent than the competition, but loses on bone-headed Coach’s decisions…let’s see, to be on a par with the Fall team, Hewitt would need to take Muhammad Faye, make him the point guard, and then say this is my QB…..
No, I don’t see us in the Final Four. But I DO see us in the Big Dance and playing hard for 40 game minutes each night.

What a joke the Tech postgame show was tonight. They call it the Locker Room show but there was nothing from the locker room—just Randy Waters babbling on about stats for 15 minutes.
I guess Paul Hewitt isn’t man enough to face the music after a loss. Where does Wes Durham disappear to after a game? Are he and Hewitt sobbing on each other’s shoulder?
What’s really amazing is that someone actually sponsored that piece of GARBAGEthey call a postgame show.

It’s going to be hard to ever outrecruit a class that was ranked #25 in the Nation or so in 1988 that included…Shawn Jones, Marco Coleman, Willie Clay, Ken Swilling, William Bell, Kevin Battle, Speed Merchent, Rodriguez, Jerimiah’s, etc…Recruiting is great but what they do later is better. That team whipped Nebraska to share a National Championship. None of Chan’s team’s have been ranked at the end of the season it appears. Hopefully that will change in this coming year.

Ty,
Pick your head from your bong. Were you watching the woman’s game?
Tonight’s game was the worst performance from a Jackets team in years. A total insult to the fans and the program.
It was so bad, even Hewitt missed his post-game radio show because he was letting the team have it. NO HEART, NO PRIDE, NO PROPER PREPARATION, AND NO ADJUSTMENTS. This game was a total failure, and it all starts at the top. I’m sorry Hewitt, but we’ve heard way too often lately that “it falls on the coaches.”
Losing is part of sports. Playing with no heart is soul is unacceptable. Get your act together, or dismiss yourself from the team for poor performance.

See gnats! Chan does learn. After that Reggie Ball guy, he knows a bad apple when he sees one.

I can understand why students want to go to a great school like Tech but how long will good players come when they know the head coach wants to leave and the fans want him to leave.

Looking at Tech’s 2007 schedule, I think Chan is going to be hard-pressed to win his 7 games. Probably a 4-8 record at best. But on the bright side, one more year off his contract.
