Life with, or without, Gailey

I feel like I’m stuck in a plane, circling overhead, waiting for weather to break. When is this Chan Gailey business going to happen, whatever’s going to happen?

Good grief. What are the Dolphins doing, interviewing 13 candidates or something like that? Shouldn’t you go into a coaching search with a pretty well-defined idea of what you’re looking for?

At least we know Giff Smith is staying at Tech as the recruiting coordinator. He was contacted by some intermediaries from Georgia Southern, but did not get an interview. I have no idea why, and must admit that surprises me. He’s not only an alum, but a former All-America at GSU, and proving to be an outstanding recruiter. Chris Hatcher is not a GSU guy, but what do I know?

For my two cents, if Gailey stays, there’s no damage to recruiting at all, present or future. If he gets and takes the Miami job, two different things, I wouldn’t be surprised if Tech lost one or two recruits, Morgan Bennett being a possibility, but no more. I wouldn’t be surprised, either, if nobody reneged. That would depend on who Tech hired as coach.

If it’s somebody with whom recruits are familiar, perhaps there would be no effect. If it’s somebody from outside the organization, the landscape changes. Depending on who it is, and how much of the staff he changes, you never know. Impossible to predict. You know other schools are recruiting these Tech commits hard. Derrick Morgan told me that Penn State kept calling him almost right up until he left to enroll at Tech Jan. 8.

Onto another sport … North Carolina kicked Clemson’s butt last night, although the Tigers couldn’t have shot the ball worse, I don’t think. That’s not their forte, anyway, but combined a terrible shooting performance and a UNC team possessed, and it was ugly.

Tech has to start reasonably well in Chapel Hill Saturday night, and Ra’Sean Dickey has to slow down Hansbrough, who’s not going to be in a good mood. Last year, Dickey got in foul trouble fast, and Hansbrough went for 40. Still, Tech was blowing doors, hitting 9 of 10 3-pointers in the first half, and then 0 for 7 in the second half. I’ve never seen two halves so completely different.

Tech can win. The Jackets have got to bust tail for 40 mins, and run only when it’s obvious they’ve got a big advantage. The ‘Heels are deep, and athletic, and if Tech goes 40 minutes of run and gun, this is one team against whom the Jackets’ athleticism is not enough to win out.

I agree. What the heck is taking so long in making a decision at Miami? I’m sure there’s a lot we don’t know, but if they are going to take our coach, at least give us as much time as possible to regroup! Jeez!

On to bball: We’ve got what it takes to win in Chapel Hill. No doubt. But can we pull it off; can we play like the team we know we are? I’m waiting with baited breath.

Tech never deserved him . Very ignorant, unrealistic fan base when it comes to football. I hope they have the sense to look at Paul Johnson . Something complex & not seen much like a triple option would be good for a team with a recruiting disadvantage.

It’s obvious that Chan wants out and I suspect he will get his wish. He believes he’s done a great job for us yet he’s never been able to win over the majority of alumni fan base. I guess having the worst losses ever to our two biggest rivals, never beating our biggest rival, losing to inferior opponents and being a part of the only probation ever for GT just can’t outweigh the 5 big wins and one NewYears day bowl. Unforunately, Chan has assembled a pretty good staff and has been able to get some solid recruits. Hope his leaving doesn’t change that. We will see just how good an AD DRad is pretty quickly.

I realize (as does anyone with half a brain) that the AJC is one of the worst papers in any major metropolitan area. However, I find it hard to believe that a British newspaper is scooping the AJC on a COLLEGE, AMERICAN football story…

By socaldawg

to be fair, I can’t find a single sports media source anywhere that is breaking the Chan news. But it’s all over the recruiting boards - even the GT boards seem convinced that it’s true. But you can’t even get a rumor of it yet at AJC. (undoubtedly they are just trying to confirm - the perrenial excuse for “we got beat.”)

I wonder what the atmosphere is at Tech. You have a guy wanting to jump ship in the middle of recruiting season; people know his bags are packed. Where else in business does this team not a team concept play? And Gailey what is he doing hovered over his cell phone waiting for the thing to ring and then letting it ring two or three times as if he was cool about it. And if he gets the word does he head back to the office to clean it out, how all that work? Then you have all these assistant coaches looking for a quick job working the Tech cell phone being paid for by Tech. Recruits are not being protected. I mean this whole thing is a mess. Tech gave this guy a five year extension last year when we could have transitioned more smoothly; instead he is calling the shots and this is a mess. It is not losing an average coach that bothers me it is having him leave a mess or even worst staying and causing even a bigger mess next year. We are being held hostage by someone who by all rights should have been fired last year.

I agree with you GT. Not the smoothest exit (if it’s an exit).

I’m wondering if the Miami rumor is a hoax at this point. Still not a single major media source reporting it. Just a british newspaper and the recruiting sites (which usually are days ahead of the AJC, for the record.)

All three of the Miami finalists could work out and at least be adequate. Part of the problem with two of the three (not Tech) was the organizations they came from. At Tech it’s a little tweaking and who fits. Gailey has done an adequate job but not really a good job. O’leary had Tech recruiting well every year and had some weakness on defense but from 1997 through 2001 his offenses were like Tenuta’s defenses. If Gailey does move on then I hope several of these assistants stay on since they are familiar with Tech and of course it would depend who gets the H.C. job but we have done this enough to not reinvent the wheel every coaching job. Many of O’leary’s assistants would have helped Tech better by staying when Gailey took over the job particularly with recruiting and knowing their way around Tech. The same should apply with some of Gailey’s assistants notably Tenuta and Smith. I understand coaches want their own coaches but over a few years they can do that when assistants have attrition or take other jobs. The history is there where a new model may make sense where Tech tries to keep more assistants than one or two. It’s doubtful Gailey will take more than a few to the NFL if any. As for Burnett not sticking with Tech if Gailey leaves so be it. If any youngster can’t see it’s the institution and not always the coach then they probably should be at Tech anyway. Tech has a lot to offer student/athletes particulary with the 99% who don’t end up in the NFL and are churned up by the big SEC schools. Tech offers opportunity for years compared to just a few years on the gridiron. I hope Burnett can see that but if he does’nt there is always a Taylor Bennett or someone out there not on the rador screen who understands an opportunity when they see it.

I’d love to believe it’s true that Chan is good as gone…but MSNBC’s sports web site, updated just a few minutes ago, says the front-runner for the Dolphins’job is some guy from the Chargers. With Reggie and Chan both gone, we could DARE to DREAM again!!!

BOBBY ROSS IS THE ANSWER. HE DID A SUPER JOB AT MARYLAND, WINNING THREE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIPS THERE. IN HIS FOURTH YEAR AT TECH HE WON A CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP AND A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 1990. SOMEBODY REMIND DAN R. IN CASE HE’S FORGOTTEN. NEVER MIND THAT HE’S AGE 70. AGE DOESN’T SEEM TO HAVE HANDICAPPED JOE PATERNO OR BOBBY BOWEN.

If Gailey goes, he won’t be taking Tenuta with him. Paul Johnson or Tenuta will two excellent choices to take the job. If Gailey stays, we’ll be fine with the recruits we have coming in. We are in much better shape now then we were when O’liary jumped ship.

If Bobby Ross is hired (and I speaking very prematurely), God help us. While his track record is impeccable he is on his way to retirement and not a long term option. All I ask for from a prospective head coach is to recruit and use the tight end more effectively and keep Tenuta in place.

By Take Your Paul Johnson Somewhere Else...PLEASE

January 19, 2007 12:14 AM | Link to this

DUDE…Do you campaign for Paul Johnson 24/7? He’s NOT a fit at GT…PERIOD…END OF STORY. If you love him so much, move to Annapolis where you can be oh so close to him.

2 names are already GONE from my list: Petrino & Whisenhunt (who was probably THE BEST FIT, since he’s a TECH MAN). Dan R probably has his own replacement list ready to go…If he’s competent.

There’s still LOADS of coaching talent out there, with PETERSEN from Boise State my new FIRST CHOICE…What a Night & Day comparison of coaching styles! He makes Gayly look like he’s asleep while coaching…Wait a minute! Gayly IS ASLEEP when coaching!

Everyone has their list…Here’s mine from LAST WEEK:

1) Ken Whisenhunt - A TECH Man…Is that what it’s going to take to finally beat UGA again? Too BAD we missed this opportunity!

2) Mike Martz - NFL Experience and guaranteed to light up the sky at Grant Field. Provides a nice Offense to go with Tenuta’s Defense.

3) Jimbo Fisher - You dudes know Dan R. has ties to LSU, right? He doesn’t want another OC gig…He wants to be HC. But would he leave FSU so soon? YES

4) Bobby Petr——Wait…Well, he’s off the list now.

5) Bobby Ross - Proven GT Winner!

6) Friedgen - Won’t leave his MD gig though.

7) Dennis Green - Has nowhere to go but up after falling into the AZ pit of doom. No-nonsense guy who isn’t afraid to FIRE an ineffective Coach!

8) Chris Petersen (Boise State) - Already quite familiar with Taylor Bennett…Can you guys cough up enough dough to get him (and keep him now)? Probably the BEST REMAINING FIT for new Tech Head Coach! Can you imagine Taylor Bennett running this guy’s offense paired with Tenuta’s defense??? UGAy Fans would TREMBLE if he were named new Tech Head Coach — AND RIGHTLY SO!

I would only add Steve Mariucci - Who’s ALWAYS great on NFL Network…And even Jimmy Johnson - “The Coach” as 2 more with NFL experience. They understand the game and they know what it takes to win — MAKING ADJUSTMENTS to render your opponent’s actions INEFFECTIVE…Something that NEVER CROSSED CHAN GAILEY’S MIND IN 5 YEARS AT GT!!

It doesn’t really matter if he stays or goes. Look at the last 30 years of Tech football. Things will never change on the flats. The pieces are never in place and the fan base is the worst in the entire country. Other programs add seats to their stadiums. Tech takes them out. What does that say about fan support? Tech is a stepping stone to a better job for most coaches. Gailey may just be best option for Tech. Once this last flirtation with the NFL is over, Gailey can grow roots and win his 7 games a year. No other college wants him.

By jabster

January 19, 2007 09:40 AM | Link to this

Last 30 years of Tech football…let’s see…

—Two conference championships —Five conference runner-up (thanks, Reginald Lewis) —One national championship —One Heisman runner-up (at least) —14 bowl bids, including each of the last 10 years

Yes, I know that Georgia can one-up us in each of these categories (except for the national championship—and anyone who starts slicing and dicing national championships is a GEEK), but this is not the history of a mediocre program.

Keep in mind that this time period includes the tenures of the overrated Bill Curry and also He Whose Name Shall Not Be Mentioned And Is Shared With Reggie Ball. To omit this would be like UGA omitting the tenures of Ray Goff and Jim Donnan.

Tech tore down the south stands to put in skyboxes…and that was 20 freaking years ago! Then again, the Bulldog Nation is pretty good about bringing up the 1980s. We have added more seats since then. Yes, a lot of visitors buy those seats, but their money is still green and still supports Georgia Tech Athletics.

Tech students come from everywhere and Tech grads get jobs around the world. It’s not as easy to get back for a home game from some of these locales as it is to hop on 316 or 78 or 441 or 129 for an hour drive. ‘Nuff said.

Moving on to coaching…

Ross would never come back to Tech. How could he ever live up to his past accomplishments?

The real question: Would O’Leary ever come back? And would he bring Goose as a QB coach with him?

By BUZZ

January 19, 2007 11:02 AM | Link to this

Goose would probably make a good OC.

By Take My GAYly...PLEASE!

January 19, 2007 11:36 AM | Link to this

O’Leary won’t be asked back because of the CLOUD he left under. Nobody, I mean NOBODY, would stand for it!

The SAD PART is it looks like GAYly LOST in the final minutes once again. Cameron ATE GAYly’s LUNCH over the past 2 days…And that’s BAD NEWS for GT Football Fans.

Now who wants a tainted coach who’s been flying around TRYING to get a job anywhere else but where he is, but NOBODY will hire him? GT Football is ABOVE having to settle for anyone, especially someone who doesn’t WANT to be here and shows it by NOT COACHING TO WIN.

Go to the games…Hell, I won’t even WATCH them on the Plasma if GAYly is still coaching through 2011. Cross your fingers that the Fish work something out, like Cameron Head Coach/GAYly OC…Or GAYly HC/Cameron OC. Unfortunately, Cameron won’t make a lateral move and if GAYly accepts the OC position, we’ll KNOW just how desperate he was to leave his GT MESS behind…

Petersen WILL FILL THE STANDS at Grant Field and his STAR has just started shooting…If we don’t screw around and miss him too waiting for someone to take GAYly. Wayne probably won’t hire GAYly because he keeps insisting they draft Reggie Ball

jabster quite being stupid. 30 years of mediocrity is nothing to brag about. Tech is mediocre and second tier. The big boys of the football universe passed your little team by years ago. You have been going in reverse when everyone else was moving forward. And Tech fans are the reason for it. Tech will always be a training ground for another schools future coach. And jabster, whether you like it or not Chan was the most consistent winner Tech has had in those 30 years. You better keep him.

The AJC has no competition. Hence- it sucks. That doesn’t mean all the reports are bad or anything like that. In fact I think our guy, Winkeljohn, does an excellent job. Schultz is always entertaining. However, on the balance, the AJC is a pretty poor paper for a metropolitan area of close to 6 million. In every department mind you, I’m not just referring to the sports pages.
