Which NCAA rule would you change?

It seems that every time fans talk about the NCAA, they’re complaining about it. Maybe that’s because the NCAA is like a referee, never noticed until it makes a controversial call.

But you’d think an organization so many people gripe about would have a lot more lively discussions about a lot more hot-button topics than there were at last weekend’s NCAA Convention.

What would Georgia Tech fans like to see discussed? Which rule would you change?

Tech’s Dan Radakovich attended the convention. It’s probably wise for the athletics director of a school on probation to put in an appearance. But one of the notable thingswas how many Division I people weren’t there.

The NCAA, which used to be a pure democracy of its members, at least legislatively, now has representative government at the Division I and II levels. Things happen behind the scenes, in committees. Only one issue arose for a one-member, one-vote electronic roll call in Division I: The vote on whether to override a rule allowing players who graduate with eligibility remaining to transfer and play right away.

And even on that issue, 76 of 357 possible voters didn’t vote. (One of those members that didn’t vote, by the way, was Tech. Radakovich said, because of an administrative error, Tech never designated him as its voter.)

The new timing rule in football has worked as intended, but should not be used in the last two minutes of each half. If there are still a couple of seconds on the clock when the ball is whistled ready for play, another play should be allowed. Too many games have ended this year not on a play but on the variability of the official’s ready to play signal.

Before anyone mentions Title IX, remember that is a government rule, not an NCAA rule.

Don’t know if these are NCAA “rules”, but here is what I would change…

  1. Stop with the human voting for ranking college football. Humans are biased. And, the current crop of humans that vote have obvious favoritism for Notre Dame, Big 10, and PAC 10. The conferences should agree on some formula to rank teams and leave it at that!!!!

  2. Have a play off. Use the results from item 1 above and also use the bowls to have a real play off system. Let the teams win it on the field!!! This will have to be insisted upon by the real fans of football because the college presidents and others are too interested in the money from the current system.

  3. Increase the academic requirements to play sports. And, have these requirements year by year. A student should not only pass the appropriate number of course hours each year, but also maintain a minimal gpa. After all, they are supposed to be student-atheletes and the word “student” comes first! These requirements should be uniform across all colleges and universities.

The fact the Dan did not get to vote is just another example of poor oversight in our program. How do seniors fail out? How do we break rules and lose 11 players by accident? This is ridiculous! We seem like a middle scholl program. How do we not demand D. Richard get in the grad school program he desires if he has the grades? He does have them! This is total BS and I would like to have a crack at restoring order up there in Atlanta. What a joke!

Go back to 11 games and use the BCS bowls to fill the top 8 teams-start mid December, New Year’s day the 4 winners and the final two the following week.

In NCAA Football, can we PLEASE get rid of the “i’m clumsy and fell down under my own power, and now i’m ruled down for the play rule”. It’s so dumb. Yes, i probably deserve to be ruled down if i’m that clusmy that i trip over my own 2 feet but it happens. And it’s sad to see a good play end just because they feel down, or better yet made a great diving catch, IN BOUNDS, no one around to touch them but they can’t get up and run it in. so sad.

Only at Tech can you blame someone else for not knowing how to vote. Perhaps your AD should learn how to use a computer or at least count to four. LOL! Smart, real smart there techies!

My dear Hilarious idiot ugay fan,

It wasn’t that Dan didn’t know how to vote, it was that Tech did not designate him to vote. Your stupid remark only continues to show the dumb level of ugay fans!

And as Knobler clearly stated, Radakovich wasn’t designated to vote because of a Tech administrative error, i.e. Tech f$#!ed up.

Maybe instead of hooting about the “dumb level” of Georgia fans, you should make a bigger stink about the “dumb level” of the people in the Tech athletic department who can’t keep their players’ eligibility straight, can’t even get their own AD signed on as a voter, etc. etc… .

Change NCAA overtimes to include kickoffs. Getting the ball at the opponents’ 25 yard line makes no sense. The way it is right now is OK except for that part — instead of automatically getting it at the 25, the team that just scored should kick it off like in regulation. It would be a compromise between the NFL system and the college system, playing the overtime like an extension of the regular game but allowing both teams chances to score.

The Jeremy Bloom fiasco at Colorado comes to mind. He’s told that he either gives up his dream of competing in the Olympics or give up his dream of playing college football because he was deemed to be a professional skier. Keep in mind that in competitive skiing, there are no amateur programs and the only way pay for equipment and travel to competitions is to take on sponsors. How is this really any different from taking on a summer job for gas money? It had nothing to do with the school and the NCAA robbed this guy of a well deserved opportunity.

Its much easier to keep your players eligible when they’re taking classes like basket weaving and cooking. Not much monitoring required… then again we are talking about UGA.

Dear Doug,

The secretary at Tech that failed to register Radakovich to vote has been fired. She was a ugag graduate with honors and is now at a more suitable job - making burritoes at Taco Bell.

How about John Thompson, ex-basketball coach of Georgetown. He said he should be able to recruit all of the ghetto kids he wants, whether they can pass or not. He also said they shouldn’t even have to go to class, NOT!!! The rules should be even stronger; kids who play sports should not get any exemptions to to be recruited. They should pass the same entrance requirements as any other prospective student (remember they are student athletes). Before anyone calls me a racist, remember if you imply that any racial group needs special treatment to pass, then you yourself are a racist by even implying they are inferior people. If you cottle athletes by allowing them to pass, without studying in school, then you are creating a similar environment of plantation culture. I want to see all professional sports create their own minor league systems (for player development just like baseball), and stop using colleges as minor leagues. Only the presidents, who own the NCAA rules can make this happen. They have made the first step by penalizing colleges that do not graduate their students (taking away scholarships). This is only a beginning, a much stronger policy must follow.

No shi^ for brains. It further illustrates that stupidity reigns at Tech that he was not their designated voter. Stupid ineligible players, clueless administrators, and even stupider fans. How do you spell Georgia Tech? DYSFUNCTIONAL.

1) Playoff (take top 4 BCS teams to play on New Year’s with winners the following week…we could have been spared the Big 10 disaster that (once again) exposed the flaws of the current system).

2) I like Jason’s idea of no clock starting during last 2 minutes of each half (too many games impacted by this). Why not use the Pro rules here?

3) Similarly — and maybe better — put a LIMIT on the number of COMMERCIALS MINUTES that can be shown during a game. Yes, we know that the advertising pays the bills, but they sell the time for a specific time slot. WHY do we have to continue to suffer through 4 hour games with a clock that is ‘sped up’?

Probably more, but that’s for another time.

First of all, in basketball…please please please get rid of the ridiculous “possession arrow”. Let these teams jump for a tie up like in the NBA. In football, get rid of challenging almost every single play. Make it only coaches challenges. There were too many 4 1/2 hour football games this year.
Also, I have to agree with Navigator. College athletes education requirements should be more stringent. I know and understand the arguement of playing sports and studying…but come on…what about kids in medical school. Also, I believe athletes should be able to have a job, if they can handle the riggors of school, work and athletics. Hey, it’s their life, let them live it.

I have a real problem with most state unniversities having dozens of ‘crip’ majors where they can hide athletes.

Many 18 year olds are too young to see that basketweaving (or Parks & Rec, Consumer Ec, Childhood Dev)is going to get them absolutely nowhere in life.

NO value is added to society and these SA’s can spend additional hours in the weight room, running, watching game film, or playing (like tennis or golf)where an SA in a pre-med major (or engineering, or business) is disadvantaged. That is until graduation…

If I’m a Georgia Tech fan, I’m changing the rules so that there are only three years of eligibility. That prevents a repeat of the horrors of a fourth year of a Reggie Ball and the loss of a Calvin Johnson after three years.

do away with the silly “running the clock” rule. do away with the first 10 minutes of hype on the game by the tv people. that would save minutes. why do they want to “shorten” the time of the game people pay to see?

  1. I’d junk the dumb-A$$ rule of penalizing a team for celebrating a touchdown. These are not 6 year olds playing midget football. Damn! IN YOUR FACE!!!

  2. I’d go to a full-fledged playoff system. The BCS is B.S. (it’s all about money and the “experts” favorites—remember Ohio State??? and Michigan’s #2??? Duh-huh!) Do the right thing for God’s sake!

  3. And Notre Dame would be required to join a conference if they wanted to continue playing football. They play a wuss schedule,(except for maybe a couple of games), and the sports media “experts” just drool over them as they vote Notre Dame to the top of the rankings UNTIL they get their a$$ kicked a few times and the high rankings can no longer be justified.

  4. Put ME on the rules committee. I’ll straighten this mess out. Guaranteed!

If there’s a blocking in the back penalty on a kickoff or punt return, don’t make it 1st and 10 AFTER the penalty—-make it 1st and 25 (or whatever) so that it’s a REAL penalty. Get rid of the stupid celebration rule too; taunting can and should be controlled without penalizing a team’s exuberance.
