Weird week at Tech

Seems like a weird week. Tech’s getting ready to play a game that, while not meaningless, doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things, and for the right reasons. Obviously, the Jackets’ present ranking and future rankings stand to benefit from what would be win No. 9, and their bowl standing could be affected too. Maybe. Even if, no, don’t even think it, say things don’t go right Saturday against Duke, if the Jackets win in Jacksonville in two weeks, they’re in a BCS bowl.

Lose in two weeks, and, well, who knows? But their prospects would be made better by each win between now and then.

There’s a school of thought, of course, that quarterback Reggie Ball might benefit from a game off, that having a chance to mend would help the Jackets in the long run, you know, when they need him more. That’s not Chan Gailey’s school of thought, though. And so it goes.

I don’t think the Jackets’ other injuries are especially problematic (PR Tyler Evans, DT Elris Anyaibe, possibly) TE Michael Matthews.

As for basketball, gee, Tech looks pretty good. Sure, the schedule’s been soft so far, but the Jackets have done what good teams need to do in games like the first two, rolled.

Having a bonafide point guard makes a huge difference, having more talent helps, having competition at several spots sure doesn’t hurt, and an increased energy level is good for everybody.

As impressive as the freshmen are, and they’re mighty impressive, nobody’s jumped out at me more in two games than Ra’Sean Dickey. Talk about highly motivated? Coach Paul Hewitt says he didn’t start Zach Peacock to send a message to Ra’Sean, but one got sent anyway.

I think Hewitt’s plan to have a nine-man rotation where nobody’s guessing at their role is a good move, too, although it could see it shrinking to eight for some ACC games.

The 10th man, D’Andre Bell, looks kind of stuck without a position for the time being. He’s played a little in each game at No. 3 PG, but I don’t know if he’s got the handle for that spot. D’Andre can play, but I wonder if he’s not a two or a three. What do I know?

The first posting, the poster needs to get a life. What good does it do to make threats against other people as not being from this country. Remember most of the UGA supporters are unable to get into any college let alone Perimeter College.

This week should mean alot. Maybe coach will let Tyler play the second half if we can get a good lead.

Was Duke’s last ACC win against Tech? We need to run the table on the North Carolina Teams.

Can’t there be a blog moderator that will keep WPD and The Man from embarassing themselves further. I almost think these might be Tech guys who blog as UGA guys to make them look so bad. Anyway, about the real blog, we need to get a lead and let Taylor(it’s Taylor Bennett, not Tyler) play the rest of the way to get Reggie healthy. Although I have a feeling Reggie will never be healthy until the Bowl game. Basketball - our freshman do look impressive, however I fear what will happen when TC has to sit with fouls or fatigue. We do not have a #2 point guard. The kid is just going to have to stay on the court. Good thing he’s in the best shape of anyone on the team. Go Jackets. Need to be ACC Champs and Orange Bowl bound. Would love to see a rematch of the Orange Bowl from 40 years ago…GT vs Florida.

I think that Tech should definitely play Ball against Duke for multiple reasons……. 1.) Its Senior Day. The man started at Tech ever since his first game. We owe him that. 2.) We cannot allow anyone to get rusty. If Ball just plays a half, itll do him good. 3.) Give Ball a chance to break some records!

Furthermore, Heres one thing to think about to all of the “Reggie Haters.” Before Ball came here, Tech was in big trouble, they came off a 7-6 season and a bad bad bad loss at Georgia and should have felt lucky to have that record. Ball shows up out of nowhere, wins the job, and starts his playmaking. Then, Tech fans started to have excitment once again. Ball beat some pretty good teams as a freshman (Auburn, NC State, Maryland). The road may have been bumpy since, but consider where we were that year… . .Many considered us to win only 2 games that year. And we won seven… . including a bowl game. Now we are going to play for an ACC championship and will probably be favored against the dawgs. Now this is not all credited to Ball. Others have helped, (Johnathan Smith, The defenses over the years, PJ Daniels, and that other wide reciever that wears #21 lol) But if you look at where we were and the transformation of where we are now. They have one thing and one thing only in common. Reggie Ball

Wow… I don’t know what I did to pique the interest of “the man,” but he sure does seem to have a keen and almost perverse interest in me, mentioning me in his blogs and all… get well soon, sir.

GT80: Matt was talking about Tyler Evans and his injury (not Taylor Bennett). I honestly think that Taylor will start the second half. After the underwhelming offensive performance during the UNC game last week, the seniors will come out with fire in their bellies and light up Duke early. Even if the coaches go vanilla on offense, I’d expect the team to execute much better this week.

As far as #2 point guard play, I liked what I saw of Mario West yesterday; providing spark off of the bench ala Will Bynum. I think that our weakness from last year may turn out to be one of our strengths this year. Great blog Matt, and Go Jackets! Beat Duke!

Reggie isn’t the only one that needs to be sitting on the sideline in the second half. I’d like to see Tashard, Calvin and half the O-line over there with Reggie getting some rest.

I hope Tech gives us a breather this week with Duke and Ball plays a tremendous game in his last at Bobby Dodd. The basketball team looks extremely athletic and exciting. Lewis Clinch seems to be getting overlooked due to the new fab freshmen but is an excellent player.

i agree. i think Reggie should play a half b/c its senior day……then sit on the bench and start thinking about UGA right away. And I hope Tenuta is starting to make a gameplan for the Dawgs starting today. Who cares about duke……. lets start planning for UGA since they started planning for us on 3 days ago. I say this for Reggie’s on good…… HE DOESNT WANT TO GO DOWN AS THE GUY WHO LOSS TO UGA 4 TIMES IN A ROW! THATS DEPRESSING!

Reggie is nothing but soggy cereal at best. Any program that has had to call Reggie Ball a starter for FOUR years is in a sorry predicament. He is not D1 material. What happens next year when CJ is gone and you have a QB that wasn’t good enough to beat out Reggie Ball at the helm? I guess you get stuck with another true freshman. Tech is in for a long year next year.

It’s refreshing that the “big game” before bowl season will be for the ACC championship instead of throwing sticks to some inbred mutts. It will be in the record books forever that we were in the initial title game. Now, let’s just win it and go orange bowling. As to the point guard situation, I’m more worried about next year when both our current PG’s will probably be gone. I know we have another freshman coming in, but this won’t work every time.

I think WhitePowerDawg and The Man are just a little confused. They’re a living stereotype. I don’t think they’re Tech fans in disguise, because a good bit (not all) of UGA fans make themselves look like idiots, with the help of Tech fans.

And, AD, Reggie Ball and Chan Gailey have made a life out of football. So, in all honesty, I think they know a little bit more about football than any of us. And I’m sure there’s other things we’re not taking into consideration, like a 5’11 QB with huge linemen which I’m sure would affect his ability to see. Not to mention his injuries.

Anyways, let Reggie get Tech the momentum vs. Duke, and keep putting in Taylor Bennett when we have the momentum. Do that a few times and we’re good, and that way we can give Reggie a chance to play his last home game on The Flats while giving him some resting time.

Does anyone else see the irony in WhitePowerDawg hating on GT’s non-white students/athletes, while the majority of the players for UGA are black? What a chump.

As for “The(wo)Man”, he seems awfully confident after one good UGA win. I won’t rain on his parade by mentioning that Auburn’s QB was injured and shouldn’t have been playing. This is still the same team that lost to Vanderbilt and Kentucky, almost lost to Colorado and Ole Miss, and got thumped by Tennessee. Getting cocky is only going to make you feel worse when GT beats UGA anyway. You were better off two weeks ago when your world was over. At least then losing to GT was going to be bad, but expected at least. Now you’re just going to be crying over your leftover turkey sandwiches and sobbing next to your fellow klan members.

Sorry Steve, I totally disagree about Reggie Ball. I think we could have gone further than we have if Gailey had chosen another QB. The only improvement in RB in 4 years is he can throw the ball away and therefore keep his interception numbers down. But overall, he has not impressed me although I’ll give him his due respect on Senior Day for his contributions to Georgia Tech.

I am no lawyer or FBI agent but I forwarded White Power Dawg’s e-mail to the proper agency. I believe his comments about the “foreign Tech students” is terroristic and could be constured as a threatened racial hate crime. I am confident they can find him via his e-mail address and maybe we will be shed of him for good.

Matt, two comments:

1 - play Reggie the first two series then sit him down.

2 - re article about Calvin and the Heisman - are you kidding? He doesn’t have the stats, thanks to a QB who can’t - or won’t - get the ball to him.

Calvin would have a Heisman in his hands were it not for being handicapped by Reggie Ball.

When defending Reggie, people always refer to how he won all the big games. He didn’t win them, we won them despite him. This season is not over yet. Losses are very possible to UGA, ACC conference championship and Seattle Bowl. That would leave all this chest thumping for naught. We’re not THAT good. Just a very down year for the conference.

chuck - FSU and VT played in the initial ACC title game last year. Still, second year, GT vs Wake sounds pretty good.

re: RB - The coaching staff sounds downright hostile towards the idea of playing Taylor Bennett this weekend. Did he make a pass at Chan’s wife or something? Reggie will start Saturday and play for at least 3 quarters unless he gets carried off the field on a stretcher. He’ll be motivated, though, and finally put some points on the board. Tech 42, Duke 7.

I’m perfectly okay with Ball playing as long as it’s no more than a half (and we should have a solid lead and hopefully shut out at half).

As far as Calvin and the Heisman, he never had a chance. Only two/three WRs have ever won (Woodson?) and they have always been big time all-purpose guys in addition to being WRs. It has nothing to do with Reggie Ball. But despite that, Calvin still has more or as many TDs as most of the top RB candidates which is absolutely sick for a WR.

By xNFLplayer

November 15, 2006 12:59 PM | Link to this

It has everything to do with Reggie, Joe L. If Calvin had had a Vince Young, Matt Lienert, or for that matter, a D.J. Shockley or David Greene delivering the ball, he’d have out of this galaxy numbers. Calvin choose the wrong school, with the wrong QB. I actually feel sorry for the guy. Until he picks up that #1 darft pick payday that is.

Does anyone else here have that sick feeling in the pit of the stomach that UGA is going to beat us handily, we somehow manage to win the ACC, and than get completely overmatched in a BCS bowl and get embarrassed in primetime in front of the whole country? As another blogger stated earlier, we really are not that good. Certainly not BCS bowl caliber.

To the Reggie haters. You should know that Reggie is closing in on almost every QB record at Tech, even the one’s held by Joe Hamilton. He’s a hell of a competitor and athelete, just not always consistant.

To GT92 - Our team is good enough to hang with the best teams in the country. Our play calling has been very vanilla in the past few games, but expect that to change in the final 3 games (UGA, ACCCG, OB) Our defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in the last two games.

Go Jackets!

Reggie is an awful QB. Never before in the history of Div-I has a 4-year starter been worse as a senior, than as a freshman. Calvin wouldn’t be a distant 3rd in the Heisman if someone competent could throw to him (or anyone else) on a consistent basis…as in >50% of passes completed. Why has Calvin done so well? Well, even Barry Sanders had a Hall of Fame career behind the Detroit Lions O-Line. I’m hoping Chan Gailey continues w/his pro philosophy and sits Ball out or doesn’t play him much against Duke and UGA. Mark these words, Calvin will have huge games if he does.

It makes the hate between the Shia and the Sunnis in Iraq pale in comparision.
