McManus ailing; raves for Crittenton
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
If you’re going to lose a starter, the next two games look like a good place. That said, other than starting guard Nate McManus, whose injury remains unknown although he returned to the game some time in the second half after being replaced by Trey Dunmon, I don’t think Tech has any serious issues. As Mike Knobler wrote in the paper today, McManus is questionable. We may learn more today.
That doesn’t mean all starters will play at North Carolina, but they might. Safety Djay Jones (shoulder/arm) entered the game on about the third N.C. State possession in passing situations. I don’t think there was a problem with Avery Roberson or Jamal Lewis playing at safety. My guess is coaches - again - became unhappy with Pat Clark at nickel back, and wanted to move Lewis from safety to that spot in passing situations. That left Roberson and Jones at the safety spots in passing situations. Pat Clark’s had a frustrating season, huh?
Reggie Ball missed the final snap at N.C. State because his foot was kicked or stepped on, Chan Gailey said after the game. I think he’s good to go, inasmuch as he’s been beaten to death the past month and probably could use a week at a spa. I don’t think the foot will keep him from starting, though.
Regarding basketball, coach Paul Hewitt has said many good things about his freshmen, of course, but I was surprised when he raved about Javaris Crittenton, and his conditioning.
“Javaris is probably the best-conditioned player on our ball club, and that’s hard for a freshman. As coaches, we sit around and tell freshmen they have no idea what it’s like to be in tip-top shape,” Hewitt said. “This guy from Day one has literally won every single sprint. The other day we were doing lunges, kind of grueling, and he and Mario West were way out in front. We looked at each other and said, ‘This ain’t no normal freshman here,’ physically. Now, from a mental standpoint, he’s got a lot to learn.”

Well, Dave Braine brought in both Hewitt and Gailey…wouldn’t it be something (with all the past complaining)if those two coaches wind up enjoying a really long run of great Tech teams. With the current recruiting successes, it can sure happen. Congratulations to both Coach Hewitt and Coach Gailey for bringing so much pride and excitement back to the Flats! Go Jackets!!

I would like to see Ball play in the UNC and Duke games enough to continue to beef up his numbers (touchdown passes, etc.). However, once we get a lead he should be pulled out for rest. We will need him for the ugag game, ACC championship game, and also the Orange Bowl.

I agree with JUSTME, get the lead against UNC, and put Duke away early and put Reggie on the sideline and lets get him rested. This is the second part of our season, we lost 2 in the first part, now lets go 5-0!

Hey Jackets, go over to the Junkyard Blawg where they are discussing what game ‘matters’ most, a win over Auburn or Tech. Most say Tech! LOL, Jackets rule the field and their minds this year!

Why not just rest Reggie for the next 2 games unless there is trouble? We might find we actually have a passer on the bench. Gailey nor Reggie will never let that happen because it might expose them both.

If I see another Cremin’s story on the GT page, I’m gonna puke. He was great to our program, but let’s move on AJC. Hewitt and staff are now in control. And don’t think for one second that Cremins won’t bow down to GT if his squad ever plays us. It’s cut throat. Admin ran him out of town, so let’s move one.
Ok, back to this blog. Jarvis is special. He isn’t college material, but the NBA rule makes him so. He’s a freak. And Young is just as special. This group could be a final 4 contender by year’s end. Remember unranked Florida last year???????

I agree with Ben. I saw Bennett play in the Troy game and saw a better passing QB than Reggie. If you were there you saw that they were running pass plays that they never run with Reggie due to his lack in size.

Daily can be a dangerous runner- do not fall for the trap game syndrome. Tech needs to win, not get a lead and hold it, but push hard the whole game and finish it off. Resting during a game is fatal.
