Some recruiting loose ends
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The good times are rolling at Georgia Tech, huh?
In the driver’s seat in the Coastal division, another big recruit in the fold, hoops season about to start with the Jackets as the only team in the coaches pool that had a losing record last season, and Durant Brooks has made the semifinals for a national award. Not bad
Brooks, by the way, is on scholarship. I asked Gailey the other day.
On recruiting, there will be stories in the next couple weeks or so about kids who like Tech, or are considering Tech, or are leaning toward Tech, etc.
The Jackets have three recruits far above all others on their radar now: S Morgan Burnett, S-LB Lorenzo Edwards, and DE Jason Peters.
There’s a story out there about a WR who favors Tech, but the Jackets have greater depth issues, or will in the next year or two, at S. Coaches really, really want to get either Burnett or Edwards, who may translate to linebacker at the next level. He’s 6-2, and 220 or so, and likely to grow some more. He’d be a very big safety in a scheme that favors guys that can really move in the secondary (he can).
Gonna be cold tomorrow night in Raleigh, folks.

Has anybody heard or read anything about Calvin’s decision to come back for his senior year? If he leaves, that big recruit (WR) from Denver will be greatly welcomed!

Even IF Calvin does come back, we are going to have a freshman QB. A freshman WR probably gets a red shirt.
Big fast defenders are the gift that keeps on giving!

Knowing the academic requirements, I can’t believe the success Tech is having with this year’s recruiting class. The new recruiting coordinator and the rest of the coaching staff should get a well deserved pat-on-the-back. Just think if we can get several years in a row like this year’s class. With Gailey now administring to the overall team management and leaving the play calling to Nix, and with Ball leaving, the future for Tech is indeed looking bright.

no need to cut on Ball on Steve.

The future is indeed looking bright…BUT, it has absolutely nothing to do with Reggie Ball leaving. He has been a fighter all the way through and the Yellow Jacket nation should give him a great round of applause on senior day. What it all comes down to is…He is a student who plays football for our school’s team. How would you like it if when you graduated from Tech people were cheering your departer because the school’s future would be brighter? hmm…

Almost forgot about with all the recruiting news. No more Reggie next year! It’ll be so cool to have a QB again who can actually check down to secondary receivers.

You guys who are knocking Reggie must not have watched the second half of the Miami game. The man plays hard and tough.

GT_Blume,
What makes you think GT will have a Freshman starting at QB next season? I think you are mistaken. Taylor Bennett will be the starter until he proves unworthy. The QB depth at GT is not the way it was when Gailey arrived and HAD to start Reggie Ball. Bennett is capable of running this offense well. Then you have Jonathan Garner, the kid who was slated to be at Florida until Urban Meyer renegged on his offer to give it to Josh Portis (the Utah recruit who changed to UF, who subsequently transferred after not getting enough playing time). My point is, as good as Josh Nesbitt and Steven Threat are, they won’t be at the top of the depth chart come next September. This aint UGA, and that’s a great example of what not to do: hype up incoming freshman QB’s to the point where you have no choice but to play them, then they flop. Do you really want to go thru what UGA is going thru, or what GT went thru with Reggie Ball 4 years ago? C’mon man be realistic.

…was glad to read and hear the good news about Dwyer and R. Jones the other day. I think everyone agrees that good offenses start with a good running game. When you add a dual threat QB and a pro-style QB to the mix, GT will have all of the weapons and depth at the playmaker positions to be one of the elite teams. Then you add the consistently outstanding defense of Jon Tenuta, and the future looks bright for GT!

I don’t mean to sound negative at all. I mean, I do think that the future for Tech football is looking great. However, as a long time Tech fan, I am accustomed for something bad to happen. Historically, whenever we think things are going great, there is something that happens to spoil everything.
My biggest fear this year is that we now lose to Duke or UNC (for example).

The great news for Tech is there are only 6 senior starters this year coupled with the fact that most of the backups are young. The defense will be better next year and the O-line even more experienced which will take alot of pressure off the next quarterback. The new recruiting class will just add to it all in the coming years.

Great passion about Reggie… All the appreciation is not ever going to make him a good QB. His career at Tech has been a dissapointment. Taylor is not an upgrade at all, we can only hope he can learn like Godsey. Start a freshman at QB and you recruit nobody for three years. Chan should be ashamed he has recruited no QBs for three years.
Calvin is not coming back. You can put that in the bank. Defensive backs had better be a priority.
Go Jackets and you guys stay level and continue to see the truth not the wish…

Justme - we will not lose to UNC or Duke. This is a better Tech team than the one who always seemed tofold for no reason.
jackets fan - I would not have a problem with starting a freshmen, knowing his 1st year may be a rough one. I think you have a better shot at a great season when the QB is a Jr or Sr. I think it’s tough when you break in a new QB every 2 years. That said, the coaches will put the best man on the field. If it’s Bennett, it’s Bennett

Gailey continues to stick with Ball when he is having a disfunctional night. With the talent on the tech squad is the blame properly placed on Ball who goes from good days to flat out losing games for us or is Gailey the blame for creating an unholy alliance with who is arguably the consistently worst QB in the top 25 teams. Maybe the only way to rid Tech of this four year curse is to find a wiser coach. No excuse for losing to unranked NC State. Is Duke next?

Lazybee says, “Gailey continues to stick with Ball when he is having a disfunctional night.”
What would really be dysfunctional would be to pull Ball every time he wasn’t living up to the fans’ expectations. How do you think Ball would perform if he had to look over his shoulder every time he missed a receiver?

I just suffered through having to listen to the NC State announcers call the Tech game on XM Radio. Why would I want to do that? Because I live outside the Perimeter. And you can’t hear Tech on 790 or any FM station outside the perimeter. It is unfathomable to me that you can find the Dawgs on what seems like about 10 different FM stations, and Tech is on none. Come on Tech, show you’re a big time program and get some decent FM radio coverage outside 285 so we can hear Wes call the game. I can hear Wes on Sundays, why not on Saturdays as well.

i think reggie is playing better and more consistent at the QB position….not sure about his stats but i would think his TD passes now outnumber INT’s by a fair margin……he’s starting to play like a senior with a boatload of starts….i have been right up there with everyone else who found his inadequate and inconsistent play incredibly frustrating….but i think it all goes back to the change in style of playcalling with nix…..(too freakin bad it took gailey 4 years to try something different)….the rolling pockets, short passes, passes on first downs (or any situation where a pass is unexpected) has i think given reggie confidence…..and GT is finally giving the ball to CJ, which opens up so many other things……(i wish nix would call a screen to the backs every now and then)…..the difference in playcalling is huge when it comes to close games which GT seems to have every week…..instead of shutting down the offense like gailey used to do and hope the defense wins it when the score is close, GT actually continues to be aggressive, using all its weapons, especially CJ, in continuing to score points….and i think reggie is “playing up”….keep up the good work RB and go jackets

If you look at Tech’s roster [http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/geot-m-footbl-mtt.html] all we lose from this year’s offense is Reggie Ball, Mansfield Wrotto and presumably Calvin Johnson. With 80% of our O-line returning along with our fullback and both running backs, we should be able to run the ball at will against just about anybody. Hopefully, this will make up for having an inexperienced QB and ease the transistion a little bit. We also return nine starters on the defensive side of the ball.
Bottom line - even with a new QB and without Calvin Johnson we will be a VERY good football team next year.

not to put any blame on reggie but…. at some point when a player is having a bad game or is so injuried that he can not do what he normally does a change should be made even if for only a single series.
not only does it give the backup (in this case qb) a chance to gain MEANINGFULL experience but it allows for the incombent to sit and experience the flow of the game.
what would happen if god forbid reggie got hurt and we did not have a backup with a single thrown pass????? it could ruin a season poised on greatness should something happen like that against nc for instance. i think that this goes well beyong the issue of maintaining rb’s confidence. after 4 years confidence should NOT be an issue for rb.
also, why on earth would a qb recruit want to play for a team that does not allow for competition. some players do play better in game situations than in practice. how would we find this out if we dont allow for any competition for game minutes???????
take a look at some of the best in the biz at developing qb’s and you see that they dont do what has been done under the 4 year reign of rb. spurrier, fridge, weiss etc
chan has slowly made changes for the better over 5 years. he got rid of dead weight coaches despite his loyalties. he has learned to allow his assitants to assist rather than micromanage. he has taken on the responsibility of making sure that the players are going to classes etc. he has learned that coaching college kids is different than coaching millionaires.
i think that he needs to learn that cometition in the qb position is a good thing!

Reggie Ball has fought, scratched, and clawed his way through every win he has under his belt, and if he were your kid, you wouldn’t feel too good about some idiots who never played college football bashing him on the internet. Also, I wouldn’t be too quick to say #21 is gone. Just a hunch.
Also, Mr. Hargraves- I respect you putting your name out here for everyone to see, but UGAy couldn’t beat Rome High school right now. The only chickens you need to count are the ones who line up on the defensive side of the ball for your beloved pups. That is all.

Yeah Drewcifurburger: how’s it hangin? I think you’re wrong. I think the Dawgs would beat Rome HS. It’s LaGrange HS that they would have trouble with. I’m not making any excuses for the Dawgs; they are giving games away. But they are capable of elimating a lot of mistakes before they play Tech. Tech beating UGA - that’s probable one egg you shouldn’t count before hatching.

Recruiting does appear to be doing better. Definitely the PR dept. has gotten better. A little reality dose for the fan base. We have won some close games that could have been losses. We have done that with a 4 yr starting QB and a fifth year coach. With our success this year there will probably be hires off our staff and we could loose a key player or two. Want to guess who? We have also caught our division in a downtrend but that won’t last long. As UNC and Miami will probably be making big changes and they have past history to show they can bring in talent. We were beat handidly in what appears to be the fourth or fith best team in the other division. So don’t party like it’s 1999 yet.

I love my Jackets, I love CJ, I love my defense, etc. When (If)CJ leaves this year, why not, the guy is incredible and could make any average Ball QB look great at times… But here’s my point, the Falcoons need to figure out who’s going to have the number one pick, and trade #7 for that pick…then let Matt Schaub throw to Calvin for a few years.
Because this will keep him close to home and continue to be a great football player and citizen for this Atlanta. The worst part of CJ leaving early, he’ll wind up out west with Oakland or Arizona…stuck in the wastelands…and we’ll never see him again…crap.
