Some non-BCS bowl options

Georgia Tech fans are thinking Orange Bowl, and that’s understandable. But they might want to give a thought about what happens if Tech gets to but doesn’t win the ACC championship game.

Here are a few factors that could complicate what happens next in that situation. Remember, this year the Chick-fil-A Bowl gets the first pick of ACC teams after the Bowl Championship Series selections.

If Clemson wins out but doesn’t make it to the ACC championship game, the Chick-fil-A Bowl probably would want the 10-2 Tigers over a Yellow Jackets team coming off a loss. So Tech fans probably ought to be pulling against Clemson.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl might have to choose between inviting Tech or Georgia (barring any game that justifies a rematch). The bowl formerly known as the Peach essentially gets the fifth choice among SEC teams, the sixth choice if two SEC teams make it into the BCS. As things stand, Florida, Auburn, Arkansas, Tennessee and LSU could be unavailable. Tech fans might want to pull for South Carolina to finish strong and the Bulldogs to falter.

The good news for the Jackets about the Gator Bowl, which picks after the Chick-fil-A: Notre Dame is almost certainly BCS-bound, unless it loses to North Carolina, Air Force or Army. If the Irish don’t go to Jacksonville, there’s nothing to stop the Gator from matching Tech against a team from the Big East or the Big 12. (Virginia Tech went to the Gator last season after losing in the ACC title game.)

We have only one bowl in mind right now…and it’s in Miami. Don’t write pessimistic articles, even though I know you’d love to say “I told you so.”

GT fans know football too. I don’t think that anyone is under the allusion that the GA Dome wants GT.

If Tech loses the ACC title game, they will go to the Peach Bowl and play either Auburn, LSU, or UT. This would still be a great bowl for tech.

Its nice to be having this discussion for a change over the past few no name bowls. I think we would bring more ppl to Jacksonville than Miami, but I wouldnt be that surprised if Jacksonville isnt that crazy about us since the last crowd we brought there wasnt that big. I would prefer to just win the BCS bid and keep things simple

Why would GT fans want to consider them not winning the ACC championship game? The potential opponents right now are Boston College and Wake Forest. Both are decent teams, but there’s no reason I can think of that these teams would even be favored against GT, much less be threats to beat GT. GT has gotten screwed in the bowl selection process the last few years. The best way to overcome the idiots who pick the teams, is to win a conference and get an automatic bid. That’s what GT is going to do, so keep your bowl prognostication to yourself.

Mike, why would you want to write this blog now? The team has just come off of a stirring comeback win versus an opponent that was a preseason rank top 10, after playing a terrible game at Clemson. Miami was poised to take the lead in Tech’s division and came in trying to prove a point to the world. GA Tech played an inspired game and should be commended.

Rather than focusing on the negatives, why not write something positive about the team? Why not remind everyone that the next game is the most important game of the season? Why not list the Orange Bowl as just as much of a natural option for a team that has a chance to play for the ACC title?

Unlike other sports fans, I think it is safe to say that GA Tech fans can calculate odds and know options better than just about anyone who reads (or writes for) the AJC.

Why can’t the AJC be as supportive of the GA Tech program as it has been to UGA’s when they have been in this position?

Finally, while I am on my soapbox, why doesn’t the AJC monitor and sensor your blogs? Many of us are getting sick and tired of the crude, rude, and socially irresponsible comments being posted on your site. It is not rocket science on how to keep the comments clean. Maybe you can contact a Techie for some advice…

I have no problem with the Chick-fil-A inviting a 10-2 Clemson over GT since they beat us head-to-head. The only negative to the Gator Bowl is playing two games in a row there, but, hey, could be a lot worse, huh Dawg fans? GO JACKETS!

I would so much rather be reading an article about the challenges we face this Saturday in Raleigh, because frankly, if Tech doesn’t beat NC State, then UNC, then Duke and then Georgia, we might not even MAKE the ACC CG, much less a decent bowl game.

It is great that the team and fans will likely be rewarded with a nice bowl game, but we still have four regular season games left. And we all know that being favored to win all four doesn’t mean our guys can just roll out their helmets to win them.

How about some insight into a team that lost two non-conference games (one of them badly) then won some big conference games before more recently going on another losing jag?

I would like to see Tech win the ACC. I would also like to see Tech win a BCS bowl game. But let’s not assume that we’re going to go to a BCS game just yet. As long as we’ve still got some teams left to play, it’s possible that we can slip up. But once we get 8-9 wins on our record, it’s understood that we’ll go to some above-average bowl game. And that, along with a win over UGA, would still be pretty nice. Just keep focus, and win.

I agree the most important game on the schedule is at 7:00 this Saturday. Do not count chickens before they hatch.

Remember the Athens Crowd before the season strated was playing for a national championship and now they are looking for 8/4 this season.

Hopefully Tech will make a bowl in the Eastern Time Zone this year.

Long time Tech fans remember what teams like Furman, Duke, Wake Forest, NC State have done to us over the years. I applaud this team for coming back last week after getting their butts kicked at Clemson and beating Miami. Even doing it after things looked bad. But,,,,I am focused on NC State and the article today is very appropriate in regards to how State plays up to their talent level. Until the Jackets and the coaching staff finish out a season like they are “expected” to, I will only look toward the next game. A lot of football left to be played! I hope the young kids on this team look at it the same way! GO JACKETS,,,,,STINGEM

I’m with the “GT” poster above. Our next opponent is NC State in Raleigh.

All of this talk about Jacksonville, BCS Bowls, and cruising through the rest of the schedule is making me extremely nervous.

NC State could easily jump up and bite an overconfident Tech squad. Amato is hungry for a big win.

Even UNC (as pitiful a season as they are having) and Duke can not be overlooked.

We’ve got to remember that these 3 teams field Division 1A athletes. They are not jokes! They can play loose and wrecklessly because they literally have nothing to lose and everything to gain by knocking off a top 20 team.

This euphoric loss of focus is too scary. There is plenty of time after Thanksgiving weekend to squawk about what bowl we may or may not be going to.

Mike, the Gator and Champs Sports also have the “one game worse than the championship game loser” rule. VT could easily win out and return to the Gator. BC or even the Terps could go to Orlando. The championship game loser might wind up playing the loser of the Big East round robin (probably Rutgers) in Charlotte, or some middle of the pack SEC team like LSU or the gamecocks in Nashville. I can understand the rule for ONE of the lesser bowls, but three? That’s just punitive and would inordinately affect small school teams like Tech and Wake Forest. One thing Tech does have going for it is the national interest in Calvin. That might have some sway with the selection committees.

If for some reason Tech doesn’t make it to a BCS bowl, I would love a rematch against the Irish in the Gator Bowl. Tech has always seemed to play well in Jacksonville and I think that our boys deserve another shot at ND. I know that we could beat them now!

I LOVE YOU SILVER BRITCHES, YOU HAVE ONE LOUSY YEAR IN FIVE, AND DECREE WHAT A LOUSY COACH RICHT IS.

Take your pick which way you want it. I read the UGA blogs, but hardly ever post something, let alone something similar to the above.

Keep on posting your comments here though, they mean so much.

THE FOCUS IS ON NC STATE, period. Do that and everything else will find it’s proper place.

GT will be in Jacksonville….they would have to lose to NC State and then either Carolina or Duke and if VT beats Miami then Tech could lose two games and still win the head to head tie breakers. The schedule can’t be any easier down the stretch for Tech.

I think Tech will make it to the BCS but not sure which game just yet. If they don’t then I think it is required of the Chick Fil a bowl to take the non-BCS entry which would be Tech. Everyhing was shaken up last year to insure the correct bowl order was preserved. The loser of the ACC championship game will be going to Atlanta. If it is Tech that is a lot better than a return trip to the Gator Bowl. I will bet a lot of money you won’t see Tech at the Gator Bowl. For Tech it will be either the BCS or Atlanta.

As a alumni of GT, I know how our football team can rollover on the easiest of teams. Such as?? Let’s see over the years… The Citadel, Duke, any team with a losing record.

Hey Chan…Please please please stay focused on the NC State game and nothing else!

Go Tech!
