Looking ahead a bit
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I know it’s Clemson week, but I find myself wondering about Miami.
The Hurricanes come to Atlanta a week from Saturday for THE most important remaining game on Tech’s schedule. Sure, the Yellow Jackets would love to beat the Tigers on Saturday, but beating the Hurricanes next week means more in the race for the Coastal Division title (especially after Virginia Tech’s loss to Boston College).
Will the Miami-Florida International fight and the accompanying criticism unite what has been an unimpressive Miami team on the field? Assuming the 13 one-game suspensions aren’t enough to affect the outcome of Miami’s game this week against Duke (50 suspensions might not be enough to affect that one), Miami will come here 5-2, 2-1 ACC.
If Larry Coker can sell the us-against-the-world message so many coaches have used so effectively so many times before, he just might be able to save his job and his team’s season.
Or the already cracking Hurricanes could fall apart. Which one will it be? Tech had better be ready BOTH of the next two weeks.

If we lose one, it should/will be Clemson. Miami is in worse disarray than the Mutt Nation team. We can and should rout Miami…then it’s a big time trap game with NC State.

Not to sound mean, but a win against Clemson would be just as good as a win against Miami. That would make GT 4-0 in the ACC going into the Miami game. Tech already has what amounts to three game lead on VaTech with the head to head tie break. So beating Clemson would give them a 2 game lead on Miami, three if they beat them too. Any ACC win is important in my opinion. If GT keeps winning, it doesn’t matter which teams they have a tie break over.

Never never look ahead. There is one team in the ACC jungle and that tiger is Clemson. We are exactly even with Clemson, have been for years except three years ago when they caught us napping. One breath of wind, one drop of rain or one mental walk about from our man Ball and we will lose this game, but if we play like we are capable and Clemson chokes just a little it is ours. Miami’s players may all be serving time by the start of that one, so just worry about the one up the road.

How about any player that left the bench…had to sit a game? Perhaps the ACC will do more than just the Duke sit down. Makeum play against Tech with one hand tied behind their back!
I hope Tech does not even think about the “U”…just the tiggers (or cheatahs as they once were called). Maybe Clemson will have a case of the big head with their “difficult” win over…just what team was that in Charlotte?

I disagree that Miami is any more important than Clemson. I grant you that it would be great to have the head-to-head win over Miami, but the goal is to win the division by winning ALL remaining conference games, not to back-in after losing two but still going to Jacksonville because of a tie-breaker. And, as far as NC State being a trap game, I don’t buy it. They beat Tech last year, they’ve beaten FSU and BC this year. No matter who they lose to, the Tech players understand what NC ST is capable of on any given weekend. The next three are all huge games, but we can only win one game at a time.
What I want to know right now is, will our defense be able to contain Clemson’s running game? Clemson has probably the best running game in the conference and we probably have the best running defense in the conference. Which one is going to win out?

I think the game with Clemson will be who has the ball last, wins. It could be an o.t. game also.

Tech is by far the best D the Tigers have seen all year. They will not move the ball at will against the Tech D like they have against all the cup cake defenses Clemson has seen all year( that includes Florida State ans BC). This game will be all about the Tech offense. If they play like they can Tech will win this game. The key is going to be not turning the ball over. Defense wins football games and Tech has the defense! GT 27 Clemson 21

I agree that it is the Miami game that is huge…for one simple reason…we lose that game and it will likely be the “U” in Jakcsonville in the ACC Champiuonship game, and not Tech, no matter what happens in our games against Clemson or N C State. If Miami beats us, they would suddenly be in the lead in the Coastal Division of the ACC by virtue of tie breakers, and we would be reduced to rooting for Va Tech to upset them later in the year. We could “afford” to lose to Clemson and still make Jacksonville and the ACC Championship game with a win over Miami, but not the reverse.
Like the blogger, I fear that Miami will come in with a proverbial chip on their shoulder. That is THE game for us….

I’m looking foward to this weekend. Tech & Clemson have always put on a good show. This could be the make or break part of the “GO BOWLING” season. I got to admit I’m a little nervous on this game(its not like we have 3 quarterbacks waiting to get in). I know Clemson’s ranked 4th in the nation, and when they’re not playing us I like pulling for them. I haven’t heard anything more about Ball and his injury status. Does anybody know his as well as any others?

Gee nerds, this is the first new blog you’ve had in what? 2 weeks? No wonder you pesky gnats have been hanging out on the Dawgs blogs so much. No wonder you know so much about us. It even seems, from some of the comments, that you actually watch our games too. Thanks for the support. I can honestly say the only Nerd game I watch is the one against UGA. I couldn’t name 5 people on your roster right now. But, if you want to watch our games that’s ok, and if you want to come over to our blog where you can say “dirty words” without fear of repercussion from the Nerd fans that don’t venture into our blogs, have at it. Folks, please stop thinking about Miami. We play Clemson next. And to this end, our eyes should be making it to a BCS bowl.
Is winning the Coastal enough? No.
Is winning the ACC Championship enough? No.
Is getting anything to the BCS enough? Not quite enough if you know what I mean and I believe you do.
Look at the position we are in folks. We are #13 in the polls and #19 in the BCS poll. If we take care of business with Klimpson, then worry about Miami, then worry about NCSU, then worry about UNC, then worry about Duke, and then worry about Muttland, and then worrry about some TBD Atlantic Divsision team, look at where we would be.
It’s all there for us if we take care of first things first and that is Klimpson.
Look, the other teams ahead of us have tough games coming and we do too. But they don’t deserve to be in the BCS Championship game any more or less than we do. But we won’t be there if we don’t beat Klimpson.
We have a great opportunity if we behave like elite teams are supposed to behave. Let’s do this up right and see where we end up.
So please, let’s stop thinking about Miami and take care of business Saturday night in Death Valley.
We’ve won there before can do so again. So in the words of Casey Kasem, “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”
I will be there in Death Valley Saturday night when Tech plays Klimpson. I will not be in Atlanta watching Tech play Miame until the next week.
FIRST THINGS FIRST!!!
Georgia Tech 35, Klimpson 17.
Go Jackets!!!

This weekend’s game should scare the Hell out of any Tech fan….forget worrying about the ‘U’ (the team won’t be….)
Always a knuckle-biter, barn-burner, and generally great game, I’m hoping that the trend that “this isn’t your typical Tech team” continues through the weekend with a resounding victory…..
Let’s forget about Miami for now…. other than wondering out loud what one would have to do to actually merit a TWO game penalty…. I’m guessing being incarcarated and denied bail for at least the first week…..

Get the ball early to CJ and pound away with Choice that should be the gameplan on offense, get lots of pressure on clemsons QB who up until saturday will not have played in a big game so this kid might have the jitters so if we rattle him, take the crowd out of it with a couple of CJ touchdowns we should be just fine. Win over Clemson and Bobby Dodd will be rockin against the U, 55,000 will sound more like 100,000

Here is a rebuttal. Read if you want; skip if you don’t.
No offense is intended to those other Tech fans with whom I’m going to disagree.
I like Mike Knobler’s and Matt Winkeljohn’s recent columns inviting us to “look ahead” with a discerning eye…bad for the players; good (or at least okay) for the bloggers.
First, I will politely address “jackets fan” and his contention, with which I’m in disagreement, that “not to sound mean (at least you didn’t call those of us who wish to look ahead morons…thank you…, as you did a few days ago over the same subject in Matt’s column titled Sizing Up the Schedule), but a win against Clemson would be just as good as a win against Miami.” No, it would not. Yes, Tech would obviously be 4-0 headed into Miami, and, yes, Tech has the lead on VT. But, VT is not the issue; Miami is. You say that beating Clemson would establish a two-game advantage for Tech over Miami and a three-game lead if Tech beat Miami after beating Clemson. All well and good and true. You throw in “beat them (Miami) too,” as if that’s extra. But beating Miami is not extra; beating Miami is essential (unless we want to rely on VT or whoever to nail them for us). What you are missing is that Miami, which currently has only one ACC loss (FSU) could conceivably run the table, which would, by necessity, include a victory over Tech, and thereby Miami would finish 7-1, with Tech also at 7-1. Under that scenario, with Miami’s head-to-head tie-breaker win over Tech, the Yellow Jackets’ Coastal Championship aspirations would be sunk. Any October lead that Tech had previously enjoyed by virtue of whipping Clemson (as well as that tie-breaker win over VT) would become moot. That would send the Fighting (literally, as we saw yesterday) Hurricanes to Jacksonville, even if Tech won out the rest of the way to also finish 7-1.
Miami is clearly a more critical game than Clemson, as defined by which team is necessary for Tech to defeat for the Jackets to go to the championship game, simply because Miami is in Tech’s division. Tech is not competing with Clemson, which is in the Atlantic Division, for a trip to Jax; Tech is definitely competing with Miami for said trip. In other words, losing to Clemson (let’s not do that!) is much more affordable than losing to Miami, because Miami is the only team that can catch Tech (assuming Tech doesn’t do a meltdown against UNC or Duke and reopen the door for VT) in the Coastal Division. So, Tech must beat Miami so the Canes won’t have that head-to-head tie-buster.
The rest of the stuff below is just good-natured argument.
Yes, we should, in my view, contemplate issues such as how many games Tech can afford to lose and still get to the Big Dance in FL, as well as who is more and who is less important to beat. And, we should think about possible Tech won/loss records besides 8-0. And, yes, we should “look ahead,” if we feel like it. Why? 1/ Knowledge is generally superior to ignorance (I don’t intend for that to sound ugly); being enlightened is stronger than being uninformed; 2/ If we realize NOW that Tech’s 2006 Coastal Division championship dreams are not lost just because Tech drops a game to Clemson (or N.C. State) we don’t have to feel anxious, later on, after actually losing one of those games (God forbid!)—we will ALREADY realize the comforting fact that our team is still alive; 3/ We’re not players or coaches, i.e., we ain’t playin’ and we ain’t coachin’!!!! At least I assume none of my fellow bloggers are suiting up — I know I damn well am not; which segues into 4/ Since we aren’t bangin’ noggins, we CAN easily afford — without hurting the team’s on-field performance, against Clemson or anyone else, one infinitesimal fraction of an iota — the luxury of “looking ahead;” and finally, 5/, the best reason of all why we should analyze scenarios and consider how many defeats Tech can suffer and still gain a berth in the ACC championship Game and so on and so forth is because…drum roll please…it’s fun, enjoyable, pleasurable, entertaining, interesting, etc.! Some of us enjoy speculating and evaluating, and saying what we think about “what-if” scenarios. If that’s not your cup of tea, well, that’s fine. But, the rest of will continue right on because we enjoy doing it. You should try it, because you might like it, too.
We’re interlocutors; we’re, uh, making conversation. That’s all. It’s no big deal. We’re just talking/writing our opinions and/or notions, including which other teams might need to help us by beating which opponents if we lose or this or that or whatever transpires. The obvious point is that it doesn’t matter a flying hoot whether or not WE board bloggers do or do not look back, look ahead, look left, look right or get down and look under the refrigerator.
Do any of you folks who get so alarmed over us look-back/look-ahead bloggers and professional writers, when we peer into the future beyond the next almighty game, seriously think that the players — if they read these Internet message boards (and I’ve heard many of them do) — are going to see some remarks by a columnist or blogger and say “Oh, look teammates, someone has written on AJC.com that Miami, two games away, is more important than Clemson…Well, if mighty bloggers have written this gospel, we’d better tune in to Miami…Let’s look past Clemson! Yeah! Let’s just get lazy and become indolent slackers against Clemson, not try too hard to beat them, and instead focus on Miami”? What we board-posters say in oral conversation in some hallway or at the office or on the sidewalk or what we type in these blogging services has not a single split scintilla of impact on how hard Tech’s players fire off the ball, block, tackle, catch or run. We have no ability to affect them, whatsoever, unless they are exceptionally weak-minded — and if you believe that the players are so psychologically feeble, then you are inaccurately insulting them and their integrity. We are fans; we ain’t bustin’ helmets — we’re fannin’. We ain’t slobber-knockin’ — we’re bloggin’.
Although I guarantee you that virtually all of the players and coaches are fully aware of the various scenarios, they, indeed, need to strongly concentrate on the next task at hand, which is the upcoming game, regardless of the opposition. The ancient but wise cliché of one game at a time is invoked for the players and coaches, but it does NOT apply to us, for goodness sake. While it is imperative for them to FOCUS on the single game directly in front of them, we don’t need to do that — at all, because, repeating myself on purpose here, we ain’t playin’ or coachin’. Some of you, while pontificating to us about what thoughts we should be thinking and writing about, clearly seem to confuse actually playing football versus merely writing observations. Please ease off the clutch. We be bloggin’. We aren’t deciding outcomes of games. We’re just conversing and communicating on the World Wide Web, typing and griping—that’s all.
Thanks for reading.

Good point. Too many Tech fans are jumping the gun. We beat two teams not top tier. Lost to Notre Dame which if offense had been unleashed could have won. We beat a Vickless VT team. And got lucky against Maryland. There are 4 tough games remaing Clemson, Miami, N.C. S tate and now Stafford’s Dawgs. Duke and UNC will be scary. It’s a long way to end of season.

As I wrote earlier, for a good season beat Miama, NC and Duke for the sure ticket to Jacksonville. This puts us 8-4 minimum.
For a great season, win 2 of the following: Clemson, NC State, UGA, and win in Jacksonville and a major bowl.

I’ve got to agree with michael, we’ve jumped the gun before(just like our instate rivals) and ended up looking like a joke (just like our in state rivals). On the other hand, not much was expected by Tech, and the Yappers were supposedly going to the National Title (HEE!HEE!HAW!).Sorry, I couldn’t resist with all these “Hobnail Bootlickers coming over to the Tech Site, but I guess with their last 4 games they’ve got nothing better to do(or maybe their at the Varsity trying to pick a fight). The goal every year is to beat Va Tech and Miami. That gives you an automatic to win the division (barring UVa getting good again) because the other 3 teams are doormats and should always be 0-9 against the 3 good teams. Everything else is pretty much meaningless (assuming equal ACC records) until you get into 3 way tiebreaker situations, where you need to have the teams you play have better records than the teams they play.
In other words, if we all wind up 6-2, having beat each other and lost a game in the other side of the division, we need to have combinations of Maryland, Clemson and NC State wind up stronger than FSU, BC and Wake.
If its still tied, because Clemson is our common opponent from the other division with Va Tech, that’s the next tiebreaker, so we have to beat them. A Miami loss to Maryland loses the tiebreaker for them since we already beat Maryland.
After that its BCS ranking, so beat Georgia.
So, in order of importance to win the division:

CLEMSON 33 tech 14
By Michael Cameron

Notwithstanding what I said above, this weekend’s game is very big for both Tech and Clemson. First, both teams are (fairly) highly ranked (Tech - 13th and CU - 12th), so here’s an opportunity to climb into the coveted Top 10 and enjoy the prestige which accompanies a lofty ranking. As a corollary, the higher Tech sits for longer periods during the season, the more attractive Tech is to impressionable “blue chip” high school recruits. Second, the winner climbs in the BCS standings. Third, confidence is strengthened by beating a tough foe. Fourth, the Yellow Jackets and the Tigers are long-standing rivals. Fifth (but not of least importance), it’s a conference game. Sixth, it’s at night in Death Valley — one of the truly spectacular (loud and colorful) venues in all of football, at any level. And seventh, winning is always better than the alternative…I hope to be there this Saturday, and to have a happy drive back to Atlanta. I expect Tech to win.

Georgia Tech has only one thing to worry about this week and that is Clemson. I agree that the NC State game could be a trap game. (Who know which Coach “Chesty” shows up. Miami is scared to death of playing Ga. Tech as evident in their recent “no tolerence, standard setting” one-game suspensions doled out for the recent fight. Gutless turds. The way this season has played out so far, I find myself rooting for the Yellow Jackets nearly as much as for my beloved, yet retarded, Hokies. I was at the Tech-Tech game. Calvin is a man among little girls. If Gailey can see to it that Calvin gets plenty of balls thrown his way, Ga. Tech should be playing in the Orange Bowl, at least. Screw Miami, simply concentrate on Clemson and getting the ball to your moneymaker!
Go Tech!
