Sizing up the schedule

Although coach Chan Gailey has said that you kind of don’t want an off-week when things are going well, he acknowledges that it helps heal some people, and young players get to play catch-up in practice.

Meanwhile, defensive coordinator Jon Tenuta said today that having a bye smack in the middle of the schedule works out great.

Some would argue that any time you get extra prep time before arguably the biggest conference game Tech’s played in, oh, half a decade (not that the Miami game Oct. 28 won’t be just as critical, depending on variables), that it’s a win-win.

It’s a simple breakdown: Tech has five ACC games left, three that appear tougher than the others (at Clemson; offensivelychallenged Miami; at much-improved N.C. State) and two that do not (at North Carolina and Duke). Then there’s the season-ending game against “that other team,” as coach Tenuta said.

Wonder what it’ll take to win the Coastal Division. Any scenarios?

Simple. Win 4 of 5 of the ACC games left, with one of the victories being over Miami. If that happens, Tech goes to J’ville. Lose two of those games, and we have to rely on help.

But one game at a time. Down with Clemson!!!!!

It will take focusing on one game at a time and NOT looking ahead. Next up is Clemson and so that one is the most important game right now.

The coaches and players do not need to even think about anything else except what needs to be done to defeat Clemson.

How can you not be thinking of Clemson. I think next to Georgia these are our most natural rivals, plus they are with us the best in the conference this year. Gailey does better in these slow motion prep situations. This not only is one of the most important games Tech has played in a while, it will be one of the better ones to watch. I think this will be one of the best five games played in the country this year. They alway play close and there is a lot on the table.

There are no other games, except for Clemson at the moment that deserve any consideration.

The Fall is a series of one-game seasons that are taken as a whole after Thanksgiving.

I have followed Tech football long enough to know that no game is guaranteed. All of the remaining games are tough, especially with our volatile QB.

Keith, you ae exactly right. As long as Tech beats Miami, they can still lose one ACC game and go to the championship. If we don’t beat Miami, we’ll have to win the rest of our ACC’s and hope that VaTech beats Miami (which right now looks 50/50).

That NC State game sure looks a lot more difficult now that they’ve found a QB. He took a pounding againts FSU and kept coming back. That game makes me more nervous than any other.

If I wanted a loss, it would be the Clemson game. They will probably win their division, and if we make the championship, it’s hard to beat a good team twice in a year.

It will be more fun beating a team twice in the same year rather than having a chance to LOSE to them twice in the same year… win now and worry about December in December…

We’ve overcame all obstacles that we’ve faced so far, beating Va Tech, Maryland, being ranked #13, etc.. being undefeated in the ACC so far, but the best is yet to come. I think we can win out the rest of the schedule, INCLUDING UGA AND THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME!!!

They’re still some Tech haters (USA Today, AJC, UGA, F$U, Clemson) that still haven’t given us our props. So all I can, and need to say, is to keep up the good work, and everyone shall see that Georgia Tech is the best!!

Take a quick look at the remaining schedule for Tech, Va Tech and Miami and you quickly figure out that it is WAAAY too early to be mapping out scenarios for any team in the ACC to reach the conference championship.

The only teams that can be ruled out right now are Duke and UNC with three conference losses. And the only team that appears to have a real inside track is NC State because they already have wins in their head-to-head matchups with BC and FSU.

I’ll echo what everyone else has said, beat Clemson next Saturday and the jackets have taken a major step toward winning the division. No reason now to think about anyone else other than Clemson.

Can’t wait, it’s gonna be a great one.

You guys stink. That’s why you left the SEC so long ago. An ACC schedule stinks. Ask O’Leary. Ask Friegen in between meals. I should have stayed at East Carolina. You owe me money. The stadium sucks. The SEC rules. I should have stayed at UGA. Your field hurt my knees.

Q: What do you call a good looking girl at Tech? A: A visitor.

At least you get good grades. Enjoy.

Hey, is that Cheetah place still down the street? Boy, can they do a Sunday buffet.

BC beats VT

By Davey

October 13, 2006 12:00 AM | Link to this

Hey I don’t care if BC made our win look less impressive. It sets up the miami game to be the most important. If we beat them then we win the coastal. Sounds good to me.

BC beating VT helps GT more than it hurts. It hurts cause more people can say that VT sucks, but it helps cause they now have two conference losses (which is much more important).

Beating Miami won’t win us the Coastal but it will make it a lot easier. Other than Miami we still have 4 conference games. Two of those will be really tough (Clem., NCSU) and the other 2 are traps. Duke gave Bama all they wanted and for us playing in Chapel Hill can sometimes be an adventure. Let’s just concentrate on winning one at a time, enjoy each win, and then see where we are going into the last weekend of November.

With VT’s loss last night, a win over Miami means we can lose 2 more games and still be guarenteed to get into the championship game.

Please - one game at a time. we could still go 3-3 pretty easily. I’m hoping for a 9-3 season and a good bowl.

For Jawja fans that want to talk the overall record of 90+ games played…

In that time period, Georgia Tech has amassed 4 National Football Championships, will Jawja has 1 title. It was 26 years ago…

Clemson is the most important game right now. This is not only true because of the old “one game at a time” cliche’, but because they are playing the best ball in the conference right now. They’ve won 4 in a row in very impressive fashion. Their lone loss to BC now looks even more impressive after BC creamed VT last night.

NC State all of a sudden begins to look like a much tougher game. After the embarassing losses to Akron and Southern Miss, they’ve hung losses on the aforementioned BC and FSU.

Miami looks like our only competition for the division and a trip to Jacksonville. We hold our own fate in our hands there. Beat them at home and we pretty much are a lock for the championship game, even if we lose to Clemson AND NC State, we’d have to lose to either Duke or UNC because we’d have the head-up tie-break against both VT and Miami. And remember, Miami still has to play VT (which means one of them will have ANOTHER loss) and BC.

Even being the pessimist that I am, I can’t get too worried over UNC or Duke. Both are pitifully weak.

That leaves the Doggies in Athens after Thanksgiving. Funny, I’ve been listening to them bark for years about how little that game means and downplaying it. Sure, I would love to spank them, but in the big picture, it really means very little. The big goal is to get to Jacksonville, beat BC, and go to a BCS game as ACC champs.

Like I said, FOCUS on Clemson…….period !!!

On a side note, I would liek to thank “the former coach” for supporting me in a bet with my wife (a UGA graduate). I showed her a few weeks back that, on average, it takes about 10 posts before a UGA fan posts something derogatory on a Tech Blog. She asked me why and I told her it must be what they do during their breaks at Burger Kingor Guthries. She didn’t like that comment too much, but laughed nonetheless. She then proceeded to look at the UGS blogs and noted that while their were some of the same comments from Tech fans, they did not occur as soon or as often. Anyway, you sealed the deal on my bet. Go back to your own Blog unless you have something meaningful to add.

In my opinion Tech needs to beat Clemson. If not, how does that bode well for making it to Jacksonville and winning? No one around here should be trying to figure out how many losses Tech can have and stil win the Coastal. That’s a moron’s way of looking at things. Win until you don’t and then try to keep winning some more. An 8-0 record in the ACC is the only scenario I care about right now. And until 8-0 is no longer possible, we shouldn’t be thinking about anything else.

Has anyone thought of this scenerio: When we beat ‘Climpsu(suck)n’ they’ll have two conference losses, one of those being to a pretty decent BC team. They’d have to depend on a lot of luck in order to make the ACC championship game. I like the idea of knocking them out of the competition.

Finish 4-1 and you’re probably in Jax — unless the “1” loss would be to Miami, in which case Tech would need help from some other conference member to give the Hurricanes a second L. GT (now 3-0, ACC) would be in the following situation with one defeat and a 7-1 final mark, considering the current breakdown of Coastal Div. teams and their possibilities, going forward. The best ACC record UNC (0-3) and Duke (0-3) could finish with is 5-3 (not likely, anyway). The best ACC record UVA (1-1) could finish with is 7-1 (unlikely, plus Tech wins via its head-to-head defeat of the Cavaliers). The best ACC record VT (2-2) could finish with is 6-2. Miami (1-1) could still catch the Yellow Jackets by winning out and finishing ACC, 7-1. Under that scanario, UM would win the Coastal Championship over a one-loss Tech team, due to beating Tech on the field. Of course, a steady diet of Ws is the best preventive medicine, and renders all potential illnesses and threats as moot. The old, unoriginal, cliche-ish but rock-solid adage in envoked for the players and coaches: one game at a time!

Tech’s formula for a good season is simple. Beat Miama, NC, and Duke and the Jackets are a minimum 8-4 going into the ACC Championship game in Jacksonville. This is very obtainable and does not rely on any help. I personally can not wait for the Miama game. I expect “Grant field / Bobby Dodd Stadium” to be even better than the ND game as everyone will realize that it is the key to Jacksonville.

For Tech to have a great season, do the above and pick up some wins against Clemson, NC State, or UGA. With NC State and UGA looking very beatable at the moment, A 10-2 regular season record is well within grasp.

Go Jackets!

PS. It appears that the choke bug has packed up his bags and moved to Athens.

This is definetly the toughest game of the year.Clemson’s offense is awesome and we’ll really see what our D is like. If we can put up 4 Td’s I think we win.

I’m hoping Miami will lose some key players due to the brawl making our game with them easier. If we beat Miami I can’t see us not going to the ACC championship. First things first though, lets beat Clemson and make it into the top 10. Go Jackets!!!!!!!!!!!!

TLFMAN —- Yes, your scenario appears to be right on the money; although we want Tech to win all of their games, beating Miami (foremost), then defeating UNC and Duke puts the team in the ACC title game in Jax.
