Gailey’s got Tech on solid footing

I get the sense that whatever Chan Gailey’s doing with the Yellow Jackets these days, it’s working.

They just seem to have a rock solid mindset working. Should Tech beat Maryland, and, well, they should, I wonder if that’ll hold through the off week.

I’m betting it does. This team seems to have a solid group of player-leaders, some seniors, some not (Tashard Choice among them), and it’s hard to imagine a big letdown unless there are significant injuries.

Georgia Tech’s offense obviously looks different, and feels that way, too, even for linemen. “We’re doing a lot of new stuff,” said center Kevin Tuminello. “Some of the same concepts are carrying over. There’s a lot of new terminology.”

Gailey said, “I have to give [offensive coordinator] Patrick Nix and the staff a lot of credit because they’ve done a super job of putting people in position to make plays, and spreading things out. The new ideas they’ve brought to the offense have been wonderful.”

…and this thing about just throw the ball to CJ, seems to resonant more and more with Reggie all the way to Chan, FINALLY! He is an unbeatable force, period.

A lot has changed since the ND game. The ND game was the old GA Tech with very conservative play calling on offense.

I think that after ND, Chan has allowed Nix more freedom to try new things. This has opened up the offense that is much improved.

Chan made the right call in handing over the offense to Nix.

As long as Nix remains aggressive and Gailey stays away from the offense then this team has a chance to win each game if the ball bounces right. As for long term if Tenuta stays then things should remain competitive however my guess is other teams will be looking at him soon as the vacany list will be big in college over the next few years. My only regret is Gailey did’nt listen to the fans the first 4 years. It would have helped the players on the team then as well as recruiting and who knows maybe we’re in the top ten now. But changes have been made and that is good.

observations: defense: front 7 look good - hall and wheeler are “great”. need to work on secondary schemes (including nickle)- too many wide open receivers. the blitz package is effective and should be maintained, but, sooner or later we’ll get burned through the air if DB’s don’t improve. offense: I agree that Calvin should be utilized as much as possible (that goes without saying). But, I have no confidence in the other receivers. It amazes me that the other teams have single covered CJ at times - this will not continue unless a couple of the other receivers can step up. In their running game they should perfect the option set that the Falcons stole from Texas. With Ball in the gun and Choice by his side it seem’s we have the personal for this set to be sucessful.

I think the ND game was more of an adjustment game for the offense, than a “too conservative” play calling game. There was one play where a bad snap cost Tech a CJ long TD play. CJ was streaking down the sideline in one on one coverage and you could tell that was Ball’s intended man, but the center put the snap on the ground and by the time Ball had his eyes back up, he was sacked. I think that play would have been very similar to the long plays from the Virgina and VT games. But they’ve adjusted well and executed the offense.

I have been extremely critical of Chan the Man in the past. Since he stopped calling the plays and let his offensive coaches do their job, everything is flowing so much better. As long as he keeps this recruiting base up and Tech stays aggressive (even with the lead), this team will be a force for a while.

thanks coach Gailey for taking a risk with a young coach. If Coach Nix continues to grow, he’ll have a great future coaching career. It looks like you’ve brought him along just right, without throwing him in the fire before he was ready.

Keep up the good work, Coach Gailey and Coach Nix.

Slow and steady progress wins the race.
