Miami game looms large
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The rankings say the Georgia game will be the toughest remaining on Georgia Tech’s schedule. Games and highlights I’ve seen on TV suggest the Clemson game will be tougher.
If you ask Georgia Tech players and coaches, they’ll point to Maryland — it’s the next game, after all.
But the key game is the Miami game. Say what you want about how mediocre the Hurricanes have looked this season. I won’t disagree.
But the fact remains that Miami is the only Coastal Division team other than Georgia Tech that controls its own destiny. If Tech beats Miami, it can lose one of its other five games and still have a guaranteed spot in the ACC championship game. My prediction: Miami will come to Bobby Dodd Stadium Oct. 28 2-1 in the ACC, 5-2 overall, after betating North Carolina, Florida International and Duke. The Hurricanes will have regained their confidence.
Tech might be 6-1, 4-0 ACC; it might be 5-2, 3-1. Either way, that’s the key game on the Yellow Jackets’ march toward an ACC title.

I think the Maryland game this weekend is the most important now. Tech just needs to concentrate on one game at a time and just let the other teams games play out. Tech is in control of their destiny. Miami still has to play VA Tech and Va tech still has to play Clemson. Maryland and NC state are still going to be tough and we best not overlook them. I truly believe Tech is the most talented team in The Coastal Division but we still need the ball to bounce our way. We can do this!

If the turtle power doesn’t kill us because we are still celebrating the Hookie experience we could run the table. We have the talent but we also have the history of talking too much and letting the car go over the cliff while we are not watching. I don’t know what it is but I’m thinking we have grown up somehow. I didn’t like the trash talking Ball during the VA Tech game. He got going so hard he almost forgot to call a huddle. Let Choice run his mouth while Ball is concentrating on the next play. Now what really worries me is that immaturity causes us to get cocky and lose to a team we are suppose to beat. Maryland is where we trip up if at all. We handled Virginia pretty well so maybe we are over these let downs for a while.

The last thing I’m worried about is Georgia. By the time we play them I’ll be surprised if they’re still ranked in the top 25. Did you see the Colorado and Miss. games?
Clemson will be a tougher match than Miami. They are averaging almost 44 points per game (albeit against some cupcakes) and scored 27 points over Florida State. They will have more big-play potential than Va Tech and will match our skill players at nearly every position.
Miami on the other hand already has a conference loss to Floria State. They also have yet to play BC, or Va Tech. So even if we did drop a game to them (which is becoming more unlikely each week), we’d still have a pretty good shot at the ACC championship game.

Miami will have quit by then. They beat Houston by 1 point and were exposed by Louisville. Not many people down here care if they win anymore this season or not. They just want Coker gone. The swagger of “THE U” has turned into a stagger.

Miami looks like a deflated team… they had to come back from behind to beat Houston. We need to keep an eye on Clemson as they are poised to make a run.

You guys managed a mere 10 points against Notre Dame’s defense and you think you’re going to go into Sanford stadium and score more than a field goal. even if georgia loses to tennessee, florida, and auburn (which likely will happen), the dogs still roll over tech with no problem. you can bet the house on that.

Let’s not allow anyone (and you know who I mean) to may hay out of us worrying about anything or anyone other than the obstacle ahead of us, Maryland.
We all know who our enemies are. They would like nothing better for us to lose our way and get happy and forget to focus on the prize.
Let’s take care of first business first. See you Saturday at Bobby Dodd.

Miami is likely large in many ways. I agree that our toughest foes from a statistical standpoint are the Clemson Tigers. A FoxSports commentator even posted that he’s predicting GT v. Clemson in the ACC Championship Game. We play Miami a week later. If Clemson goes badly, we have to get back up to play Miami. If it goes well, and we all know how sweet winning in Death Valley is, we have to settle back down for Miami. What we do against Maryland should show a lot how well this team has jelled, which they keep saying they have. After Saturday, they’re certainly making a believer out of me.
To the various Mutt fans that expect that aren’t looking down the road a bit - prepare for disappointment. Tennessee is gunning for you, Florida has your number, and Auburn will whip you like the red-headed step-children you are. Pulling out last minute games against Colorado (?!?!?) and Ole Miss (and don’t even give us that crap about the SEC is so much harder…they’re the dregs of any conference, except maybe the MAC) does not a top 10 team make. Learn something about your team before you start posting!!! If things keep going they way there are, when we roll into Samford Stadium, there’re going to be lots and lots of pups whimpering.

Good point. The talent on Miami still rivals many second teams in the NFL. They lack cohesiveness and a steady QB who can pull the big play. If they jell the next three weeks it will a hard won for Tech to win. But the biggest game is the next one. There are too many teams that can still beat Tech including Duke with it’s improved Defense. Maryland, Clemson, Miami, UGA usually that’s four losses or close to it, so there is no sure thing in college football.

Houndmutt. How can the Buffs score 14 on you, and Ole Miss run through your defense make you feel so confidant? As many have already stated, the Terps are most important, and any kind of let down will be exploited. Let’s go get that Coastal Division, and then worry about the 2nd best D-I team in the State that resides in Athens.

The season really comes down to the Maryland game… if we win that game, we enter the toughest stretch of our schedule at 5-1 (3-0). If we lose, we enter Clemson and Miami at 4-2 (2-1), with only a tiebreaker lead in our division. Let’s go Jackets! Stay focused!
P.S. - you UGA folks snivelling about Tech’s weak schedule for playing Troy should probably do your homework for the first time in your lives… UGA plays Troy next year.

They have so much to bragg about almost losing to 95th ranked Ole Miss and 107th ranked Colorado. After 13th UT kills UGA this weakend they will probably struggle with 74th ranked Vandy. UGA is pathetic this year. You guys better learn how to handle the cupcake teams before you count on beating Tech. Wake Forest beat the snot out of OLE MISS for Pete’s sake. Clemson will be the toughest game this year, even if we lose, we still control our destiny. Miami, has the best defense in the country talent wise, their offense stinks though…even worse than the mutts. What really scares me is having the inside track after that and then going on the road to NC. State (who may have their head out of their a** by then), and UNC. The let-down factor could happen there, not this weekend against Maryland.

I could give a rat’s “you know what” about any other games than the ones this weekend. Maryland is the only game that should even be considered by Tech fans here, including the one the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Tennessee should be the only focus of any true UGA fan. No other games matter at this particular time, not the games already played, not the games in the future. Win the game at hand and then move on to the next one. FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS
I went to Tech many years ago and married a gal from UGA. It took me a good ten years not to root against UGA. Now, I realize the best thing for either school is to come together at the end of the season with both teams undefeated, makes the game more meaningful, not just in the fans eyes, but ranking wise and bowl wise.

The road to the ACC Championship means taking care of first things first, that’s Maryland. Again, don’t let anyone from Muttland and their willing accomplices at the AJC keep either the team, the fans, and the student body allow us to lose focus.
They want us to worry about Klimpson, the U, and Muttland. Don’t fall for it!!!

I agree with everyone that Tech needs to focus on the next game (Maryland), and not what is ahead. The players have been saying all year that they are using the 24 hour rule and after that getting focused on the next game and not what is ahead. Hopefully the seniors and upperclassmen will show leadership and keep the rest of the team focused on the next game and then the next. I think the team knows that they have to take care of business this weekend because now the conference is gunning after them.
For the GA fans already saying that they will whip us Thanksgiving, you better worry about what you have ahead. Tenn., Auburn, and Florida will crush you and if you play Vandy like you have Colo. and Miss. you might be the Tenn. of last year. Your defense is not as stellar as everyone thought, you have a QB issue, and your run game is not as good as it needs to be to win those big SEC games. It would be nice for both teams to go into the last game with great records but I just don’t see the Dogs having it by then.
Go Jackets, ramble on!!!!

This week’s game vs. Maryland can prove this year will be different. So far, this year looks different. Reggie is hitting receivers in stride and all phases of the game are improving from week to week. If this improvement continues and injuries stay to a minimum it will be a special year on The Flats. As a fan I am not taking Maryland lightly and I hope Tech’s players are not.

First of all, I think Clemson will be the toughest game. They have proven to be able to put up lots of points and they have a pretty good defense.
Second of all, houndawg, are you high? ND was the first game of the season and we are running a new offense. Look what we’ve done since then genius. VT’s defense is worlds better than ND’s and look what Tech’s new offense did. GT is getting stronger and stronger. And, what have your beloved pups done? Maryland, UGA, Miami, no one remembers who you beat, they only remember if you won more than 7 games.
Don’t get wrapped up in the details of who you win or lose to. Tech has won big one week, lost big the next. Always seems stuck on 7 wins. Time will tell. Great win at VT, season not done yet. Reggie still has yet to get through November, his worst month stat wise. We will see. I don’t feel great about a QB who completes only 49% of his passes.

Its, Georgia Tech, and A-Town. Im tellin ya’ll this is the year. Have had season tix for 9 years and this is the best team chemistry we have had. Maryland is huge, we need to stay focused. Their only loss was to a very good West Virginia team. Clemson is good, but has played nobody. I worry about both Clemson and Miami. Miami is capable of beating anybody, or losing to anybody. They might be mad enough to put it together against Tech. I love how bad Georgia is. I have watched their games, and while Im dissapointed they won,I am glad. Our defense will rip Georgias offense appart. Doesn’t matter who is QB, but if its a freshman, its a blowout. Tenutas defense is too confusing for any freshman I have seen. Also, I have friends who go to Colorodo, they will be the first to tell you how pitiful CU football is. Lost at home to Montana State. Every game is big. As far as I’m concerned there is only one game on Tech’s schedule right now. That’s Maryland. It’s an ACC game. It’s a chance to get one more game closer to their goal of a trip to Jacksonville. Everything else is irrelevant. We all know that in the past disappointment has always seemed to follow a big upset win. If Tech can’t follow up success with more success, then what Miami or Clemson does won’t matter a damn bit. The goal is not to win a particular game or games. The goal is to transform this program from a 7-5 upsetter to a perennial 10 win team. You don’t do that by calculating who you need to beat and who needs to lose in order for you to advance. You make that transformation by winning the game in front of you. Rinse. Repeat.

SENIOR CITZEN…I thought he did pretty well considering he had to play Beamer and the OFFICIALS for the entire fourth quarter. I do hate the prevent, but come on…did you see the holding VT didn’t get called for and the phantom pass interferences. Those officials need to get suspended for a game. I hope GT sends a tape to the commissioner’s office (THEY BETTER!). The game was well in hand and it took them almost 7 minutes to score in the 4th with every bit of help the refs could supply.

Well I would say it runs through Clemson first and don’t forget road games against NC St and UNC. In 1990, our one blemish was a horrible game on the road against UNC - heavy underdogs in the game. We are not good enough to just show up and blow teams away. The season is still early. Lets take it one game at a time and one quarter at a time!

Auburn was #15 I think. (when we beat them in Auburn)…2 years earlier they started the season #1 but USC took care of that, then we spanked them. Lastly, what the hell is a War Eagle doing over here anyway?

Quick wrap-up on comments so far: half of you have made stupid posts (re: Greg) and half have made good insightful posts.
On the insightful side, I think Miami is a significantly more important game than Clemson in terms of positioning. If we beat Miami, we’re able to lose an ACC game without any worries. However, that leads to the importance of the Clemson game. Someone else pointed out that if we win at CU we could overlook Miami and be riding too high. But, if we were to lose to CU, we’d have to pick ourselves up by the bootstraps to beat Miami. Ideally we’ll beat both of them.
However, to restate the obvious that has been said a few times, yes MD is important but just like Duke, Samford, UVA, Troy, UNC and NCSU. They are all games we have to win and can’t overlook. Let’s not all play coach and point out how every game is a big game if we can just get through it.
Now, onto the stupid side of my post: Greg is an idiot. I’ve said it before and I’ll probably say it again. All the UGA folks who have come on here talking about how bad GT is are not so smart. There is no proof this season that GT will have anything less than a stellar season. All of you UGA fans who have complemented GT, thanks and you do your school proud. I really hope to be playing a 10-1 or 9-2 UGA after Thanksgiving.

Great win in Blacksburg Jackets - here’s to hoping both my Irish and the Jackets go into December with one loss by polishing off their respective rivals (USC and UGA) around Thanksgiving. Go Irish

HoundDawg this is the kind of comment that shows why you are affiliated with a school like UGA: you think you’re going to go into Sanford stadium and score more than a field goal
I’m not sure if you were paying attention, but we just put THIRTY EIGHT points on the board against the #11 team in the country at the loudest, most difficult stadium in the nation for a visitor to play in. You think we’re gonna have trouble against UGA in an intra-state rivalry game in Athens? Give me a break.
Granted y’all’s defense is pretty impressive…… They played soooooo well against those big, bad Division IA schools like Colorado, Ole Miss and a SC team that hadn’t found its starting quarterback yet.

Hey GREG, how many national championships has UGAY have? I think it’s 2, Tech has 4. Enough said
