Tech’s got more than a prayer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Georgia Tech is better prepared to play at Virginia Tech this season because the Yellow Jackets are better this year. Period. More talent. More experience in key spots, and youth that is diffused because of the talent around it in others (like wide receiver).
They’re a little faster, and they’re more in it together. By that, I mean Terry Moore’s column today was dead-on with regards to his quote from KaMichael Hall about chemistry. I quoted Hall in a similar way a few days ago for a story, and truly believe that chemistry and all related matters (many of which are difficult to really detail) matter a lot.
Yes, you’ve got to have a certain amount of talent, scheme’s important, and breaks within a game help. But if you’ve got a bunch of guys who go their separate ways after every practice, you’ve got problems even if you have all the above and more.
I think Tech’s got “it” this season, although I’ve seen “it” fall apart before on the NFL level while covering the Falcons (like last year, when it was like somebody threw a bomb in the meeting room at midseason; still can’t quite explain all of what happened as I’ve never figured out what splintered that team’s psychology).
Anyway, this doesn’t mean I’m saying the Yellow Jackets will win. But I darned sure won’t be surprised if they do.
Assuming they don’t have special teams and psychological meltdowns, like last year (when one precipitated the other, with a large assist from a frenzied crowd, from what I’ve come to understand), it’ll be about the running game. Period.
Yes, big pass plays can make a difference, and might, but if one team has a crappy day running the ball, that team’s not going to win if the other runs it well. Period — unless there’s a turnover differential of two or more in favor of the team that can’t run.
The gospel, according to me.

I think it can be a big road win like Auburn or Miami last year. But GT will have to play a near perfect game.I am afraid the “D” of Va Tech will rattle Ball into making a mistake (read: interceptions) and their special teams always scare me. They turn a field goal attempt for your team into a touchdown for theirs. A win would go along way for GT. Dang I wish we woulda beat Notre Dame !

Correct myself, both have been to two. Seriously dude, are you to p*ssy to post on the UGA blogs? $100 bucks you didn’t even attend UGA.

I am scared of VT scoring on special teams, like they did last year early in the game.
Beamer Ball is often the difference maker for VT.

I don’t care what happened last year because that was last year. Tech rolls into hokieland with the toughest defense that Beamer has seen in a while. Offense does enough to win it 24-17.

UGA fans, I wouldn’t be saying a word after that embarrassment you almost suffered at the hands of a team ranked in the triple digits last week.
Tech’s solid in all areas except for special teams. They’re going to need theirs special teams this week to pull off this win.

Hey GREG, your boss called and said if you don’t stop getting on the internet when you’re supposed to be cleaning the toilets (and taking advantage of that Sanitation Engineering Degree from UGA), he’s going to have to fire you. Besides, your mutts are going to have their hands full this weekend with that football powerhouse Ole Miss, just like they almost lost to 0 - 3 Colorado last week, LOL. Looks like it’s going to be a LOOOONG YEAR FOR THE MUTTS to use your typeset…what with their freshmen QB’s this year.

The only place Tech has more than a prayer is in trying to make it look like in your Tech newspaper that Tech is better at that which you are in fact worse.
And, that only because the AJ-C considers the 29,000 Tech graduates in the AJ-C readership to be who buys their rag, instead of the over 250,000 UGA grads in the AJ-C readership, according to the AJ-C’s own demographics.
Georgia Institute of Technology Academic Progress Rate APR is actually worse under Chandler Gailey than The University of Georgia APR under Coach Richt, in case anyone is interested in that which The NCAA does penalize teams for having a low academic standard for the college sports teams.
The latest report is the 2006 report at the end of the last Semester and Georgia Tech’s APR is actually officially 948, worse than UGA APR at 950.
UGA 950 APR : http://web1.ncaa.org/appdata/apr2005/2572005_apr.pdf
Tech 948 APR : http://web1.ncaa.org/appdata/apr2005/2552005_apr.pdf
60th to 70th percentile for Tech and 70th to 80th percentile for Georgia.
The latest NCAA report is as of February 2006, URL Link provided; and this NCAA Official Academic Progress Rate (APR) is the only NCAA sanctioning tool in which a school is punished for a team’s Academics.
Other than The Georgia Institute of Technology is On NCAA Probation for the next full entire complete two (2) years.
These cover the academics of the football teams for 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 Academic Years, not 1996 eleven (11) years ago.
Clearly, in fact, Georgia Tech is not doing better than UGA in Academics of its football players.
Is it ?
The University of Tennessee at ObKnoxiousville vols’ football team, however, is below the minimum acceptable academic progress of its team at 926. 929 is the lowest academic progress rate acceptable without sanctions by The NCAA, while the Graduation Rate Report was replaced by this APR more than two (2) years ago as the only method to penalize a team, other than putting the college ON PROBATION which is also not based upon the Graduation Rate of in-coming freshmen football players eleven (11) years ago.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is 935 APR.
Clemson University is 940.
Of course, none of these teams have beaten Georgia in football either, on the field or in the classroom.
This despite the fact that Tech admitted to the NCAA that it had played 17 student-athletes who were not eligible to play in fact by academic standards, who were Georgia Tech’s top 17 student-athletes for 6 solid years.
Including your top running backs, your top tacklers, your top secondary players, and your top receivers – all of whom won all conference awards.
Your athletic director stepped down after The NCAA Probation was doled out to Tech for these violations that Tech 100 percent admitted.
You argued that Tech should not lose 6 scholarships a year but 5 and that The NCAA should not prevent Tech from having no more than 79 Scholarships instead of the 85 Georgia and every other school in Good NCAA Standing. You lost that appeal.
Your memory cannot be this poor.
In addition to all of this embarrassment currently for Georgia Tech academically for your football team On Probation for 2 Full Years currently, Tech also played Reuben Houston against us in our last football game when 2 weeks prior in an interview with the AJ-C, he admitted to driving around Tech’s campus in a van with 93 lbs. of drugs to specifically take them himself to his friend to sell the 93 lbs. of drugs, with his infant on his lap, before he leaped from the van infant in hand, and took off running when he noticed the FBI, GBI, State Patrol, Fulton County Police and Georgia Institute of Technology Campus Police following them.
You are, on the whole, the most two-faced lying, cheating, losers this world has ever been subjected to with your holier than thou attitude and purposeful misrepresentation of that which you Georgia Tech are far worse on your own point than UGA.
Did you get that ?

BuLLdawg, with graduation rates at 41%, you should have won a national championship more than once in a 26 year period. In that 26 year period, UGAY has been sanctioned 8 TIMES. Don’t throw stones when you live in a glass outhouse. Also Reuben Houston never stole a car or got multiple DUI’s (See Odell Thurman), nor did he beat his wife (see Randy McMichael).

wow, BuLLdawg is full of BuLLsh*t. that post has more factual errors than his Basket-Weaving 101 final exam from UGA. for starters, out of the 17 athletes, only 11 played football. and NO they were NOT “leading tacklers, rushers” etc. and our AD stepped down because he is OLD and has serious health issues. and no we did NOT admit “100%” to the violations. it’s real simple- the violations were that our academic standards are higher than NCAA, and we had 17 students (over 6 years)registered in classes that were not going toward a degree. this would be fine at UGA, but not at GT. and lastly, i can’t even argue more of your points, because your post is so full of gibberish, you ignorant wretch.

Hey bullDAWG, you’re the reason we say to “hell with georgia!” (greggie too). Ok, so you have probably heard that one. But really, who cares if yewGEEay does better in academics when Pizza Hutt management is taken by half the players.
Wouldnt is be cool if the blogger every now and then explained to the readers that this site is for intelligent discussion like DOB does on the Braves site? Maybe that would be asking too much of the doggie supporters.
