How does this defense stack up?

Maybe you were wondering just how good Georgia Tech’s defense has been. I sure was after watching Thursday night’s 24-7 victory over Virginia. So I looked it up.

Through four games, Tech has allowed 47 points, or just under 12 a game. The last time the Yellow Jackets got off to such a good start defensively: 1990, the national championship year, when Tech allowed 31 points through its first four games against N.C. State, Tennessee-Chattanooga, South Carolina and Maryland. The only other Yellow Jackets defense since 1970 that got off to a four-game start as good as this year’s was the 1985 team that finished 9-2-1.

So it’s safe to say it’s a good sign.

One game into the ACC schedule is way too early to know for sure how good this defense will wind up being, and offenses as pitiful as Virginia’s don’t provide a very good yardstick. I’ve seen a couple of things that could come back to bite the Yellow Jackets against better teams — key personal foul penalties in three games, and some wide-open receivers Thursday night, including on the Cavaliers’ touchdown play. Those kinds of things remind me how inexperienced a lot of Tech’s key defensive players are. The good news: Those players should get even better with each game. We’ll learn a lot more when Georgia Tech plays Virginia Tech eight days from now.

Where do you think this defense will stack up, and which teams ahead on the schedule do you fear the most?

Against bad competition the Tech D can survive. Against the big boys it will be good for about one half. For a half Tenuta’s schemes can keep you in the game. Against better teams Tech’s lack of depth and size will be exploited. Especially by teams with good hurry up offenses. They will fatigue the already undermanned D. Your secondary allows to many recivers against bad teams to run open. They will be exploited by the good teams on your schedule. This D needs a little more size and alot more depth. Defenses can’t live by scheme and trickery alone. Just ask Joe Lee Dunn.

Tech has tremendous depth on the defensive line, so “ERK”, you have no idea what you’re talking about.

“scheme and trickery”? Its called blitzing. Its not rocket science dum dum.

Tech’s D should be commended. Having the second best defense in the state is quite an accomplishment.

It’s hard to tell how the defense will play against the better offenses. I have to agree that the secondary is the weakest link. There are too many people left wide open and the good teams will exploit that. There have also been crucial calls against the defense that negated big plays. I think I’m most worried about Virginia Tech and then Clemson. Miami is still a threat too. We’ll know how much we’ve improved and how good we are when we play them.

Being in touch with reality is not one of your qualities is it wes? Just who pray tell is this “depth” you talk about. Anyone that has watched a Tech game this year sees the same guys on the field practically the entire game. Maybe all this “depth” that you imagine are just bodies. Is that what you call depth wes? And by the way little boy. Live by the blitze…die by the blitze. Happens to you every year. Enjoy your 7 win season wes.

Tech had been playing without their primary back-up DE, Michael Johnson. He adds to the depth on DL. So does Elris Anyaibe and Vance Walker. They have played. They give us depth.

Nice try on the GT analysis though.

wes take a little trip to Athens and watch UGA’s D and then come back and tell us about depth. No smoke and mirrors with that D. Just size, speed, depth, execution, and domination.

Erk, I guess you have to jump on the GT blog and slam Tech to make your pitiful life and beloved Dawgs seem better. UGA has played no one, period. They will play a bad CU team Saturday w/ a back-up QB. Tech played a bad team in UVA. But, that depthless D is good (remember last year holding the mighty Dawgs to 14 points?). So, shut up and go back to annoying someone else today.

I Think Notre Dame was a Good offensive challenge, even though Tech Lost. The Irish only scored 14 points. I dont’t think you can put the loss on the defense when you don’t score in the whole second half. I think they will be OK on both sides of the ball.

Never heard of the guys wes. But since you have the line covered, tell us about your depth at LB and in the secondary. Nice try at cherry picking a specific area and proclaiming that you have defensive “depth”. Your name isn’t really Geprge Bush is it wes?

I hate to see someone use ERK Russells name as an alius. especially when he does not know Jack. I’m a Georgia Tech Alumnus, and I have much respect for coach Russell. He was my 8th. grade math teacher at Grady High in Atlanta, and coached Grady to their only State Football Chamionship. (probably why he got the Georgia Job in the first place). Everyone knows what he did at Ga. Southern. So, whoever you are, show some respect.

You know it would be great if the comments on these blogs were restricted to football alone and the name calling didn’t devolve to kindergarten level.

I think Tech’s defense does have good depth in the line. Getting Johnson back healthy has really helped. However, the second half of the Notre Dame game did expose our D somewhat as either too thin or out of shape. Our guys really looked gassed on those long drives when we couldn’t get ND’s offense off the field.

The secondary has good depth with as many as 6 backs rotating in and out, but lacks experience. Hopefully, these guys have learned a lot in the four games already under their belt and will continue to improve as we get to the meat of the schedule. Tenuta’s blitz schemes are high risk/high reward. It generally works out strongly to Tech’s benefit, but it does lead to some mis-matches and breakdowns in the secondary. Unfortunately, this just comes with the territory.

Our linebackers are looking really good. Hall and Wheeler are really flying around and are going to continue wreaking havoc on opposing QB’s. It is critical that these guys along with the ends get upfield and pressure the QB so our secondary doesn’t get picked apart.

I don’t know much about VT’s offense, but expect them to be a typical Frank Beamer team; tough, physical and well-coached. Even if our Offense and Defense have good games, our special teams had better get a lot better in eight days if we want to win in Blacksburg.

I expect the Clemson game to be an absolute war between their running game and our D. Their RB is likely the best in the league and they will try to wear us down by running up the gut and then picking us apart down the field if we have to walk up DB’s to shut down the run. We can beat Clemson, but our offense will have to help significantly by controlling the ball and keeping our D fresh.

I really like our chances against Miami because their offense just doesn’t look very good. Again, our O will also have to step up in that game. No turnovers, control the clock and keep our D in a field-position type game.

Our D should absolutely manhandle the rest of our ACC schedule. Maryland, NC ST, UNC and Duke are all really struggling on offense this year.

I wish the rednecks from U(sic)GA would wait until they actually beat a real team before they start hanging the NC banner. They have a freshman quarterback who has not looked impressive at all. I actually think that they’re offensive line and defensive secondary will both be exposed against quality teams.

So GREG must have watched the entire game to see the Andre 3000 interview, since it happened in the 3rd or 4th quarter… he hates Tech and enjoys wasting people’s time so much that he watched the whole game? Just to post his fruitcake summary in all caps with intermittent LOLs thrown in? That’s pretty sad.

I think the defense can last a whole game and will do very well this season, I just want to see better penetration by the D-line… they did a good job against the superior (size-wise anyway) O-line of Virginia, but I’m still nervous about the time they give QB’s to let plays develop.

As a big Tech supporter, we must wait to see how good this defense and this team is. besides an overated Notre Dame, we haven’t played anyone that could test this team yet. Although the ACC is down this year, with Miami, Virgina, NC State, North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke all seeming to be below or near .500 teams. This may be the year Tech can sneak by. But so far, we haven’t been tested and we should wait and see.

G Tech’s best defense is for the offense to throw the ball to Calvin Johnson more. I sit and watch in disbelief as to why they do not throw him the ball more. NO ONE can cover him, not even if he is double teamed. www.throwcalvinjohnsonthebllmore.com

DC, you and the other puppies out there think that your D is so big and bad. I’ll judge the mutts when they stop playing the Western Kentuck Technical College, South Carolina (who wouldn’t score anyways if y’alls whole defense took a nap on the field). Oh, wait! Y’all shut out the University of Alabama! HOW does one do that? Good win over the University of Alabama…..at Birmingham. Watch out for Colorado…who could MAYBE beat Temple, and couldn’t beat Montana (a Division 1-AA school). I’ll judge the puppies when they play someone of quality on offense.

The key for Tech on both offense and defense is to improve from game 1 to game 12. So far I think they have done that. Great chance this year to step up to a better bowl game.

It looks good compared to where I thought it would be, however, it’s not in the same league as 1985 or 1990 the two best defenses since 1970. I believe “The Black Watch” of 1985 was the best with 1990 not far behind. The 90 offense and total package was excellent. Eventhough this defense is talented I’m not sure many could start on those defenses outside a few here and there. It makes me wander what Tenuta could do with those players. The problem for Tech still remains offense. It’s looking better but the three wins are over less competition and we’re still looking at another Gailey type year unless we can beat one of these better teams or more than one. Ball is starting to be coached like he was recruited for. We can’t rely on the defense to hold everyone to less than 15 points and need to score more often and go for the jugular. Even the TV guys were saying where is Calvin until the Offense finally got him the ball more. Without him or Tenuta we’re 4-8 instead of maybe vice versa.

Tech’s defense has only played well enough to WIN. Put down the opposition if you want, but that is a serious error. You know, it never fails to amaze me that UGA fans get on the Tech blog to attack (unprovoked, I might add), while Tech fans stick to the topic. I guess that is just schooling. Grow up UGA fans, have enough couth to stay off Tech’s blog. Oh, I AM sorry: that would take class. Grow up, UGA bloggers: I did, being a 1981 UGA graduate (I FINISHED my degree) and became a Tech fan.

I think GREG had a STROKE. Jackets, great win Thursday night, I decided to use the tix I had to buy to see my Irish. Calvin is terrific and so is your defense. The Tech game will turn out to be the lowest point total ND will score against an opponent this year, write it down. If Tech can execute a similar game against VT that it did against ND - with Chan just taking one or two chances, Tech can win in Blacksburg. Go Irish, Go Jackets.

Greg’s true stupidity has finally reared its ugly head, as all can see by is 6 identical posts (I guess bus drivers aren’t really good with comuters). I was over on the UGA blog, but was amazed to see that Greg hasn’t posted at all. Could it be that he knows nothing about football and is scared to post on his own teams blog. What a joke…

I was here GREG - with an SEC analogy no less, the literate person you have read these posts for you must have been off teaching other special people that week. If I were you, I wouldn’t be worried about the ND bowl streak - I would be worried about what will happen when Georgia finally plays a team of any strength at all. Now tell me how UGA is going to be Florida, Auburn and Tennessee.

GREG - that 5.5 year win total is very impressive… so is the arrest record and teacher assaults during the same period, how many national titles during that 5.5 year period? What was the graduation rate during the 5.5 year period? Jim Donnan is still the best talent scout/recruiter Georgia has ever had, look at all those guys making huge contributions every Sunday… if Richt (pronounced the correct ignorant UGA fan way of RICH - T) hadn’t had the cupboard so full of talent, you think he would have won 57? GREG, you have to be worried that the “domination” of Tech is ending this year

Greg…Nice post on the GA Blog..you idiot! Please don’t ever post again on the GA Blogs cause apparently you do not know GA football and it appears you dont know Tech football either. My apologies to all Tech fans for the one bad apple that is spoiling the purpose of these blogs on the AJC.Can someone please make a call to the ALC to get this nucklehead’s IP address?
