Who’s your favorite throwback player?

In honor of Georgia Tech’s ACC opener against Virginia being on Throwback Thursday, I think it would be fun to think about which players from the 1970s you’d want on this season’s team.

Most of them would be too small, probably, but several might have been able to help this year’s Yellow Jackets. I’m thinking Eddie Lee Ivery’s talent would stand the test of a quarter-century of change in the game of college football. Put him in the backfield and give him the ball. Kent Hill would strengthen the offensive line. I remember watching Drew Hill play for the L.A. Rams and Steve Raible play for the Seattle Seahawks and think these Jackets could use another receiver like them, even though in Pepper Rodgers’ system Hill never caught more than four touchdown passes in a season and Raible caught just 13 passes when he led Tech in 1975.

I never got to see Rock Perdoni or Randy Rhino play. Was Perdoni big enough to be able to play today? Would Rhino’s All-America skills make him as effective today as he was then? Who else from the 1970s would you want to go back in a time machine and fetch for this season’s roster?

Why stop at the 70s? Rufus Guthrie (class of ‘63) was as good an offensive guard as there ever was. Larry Morris could undoubtedly play linebacker, and Taz Anderson could catch a few passes at TE. Think old Bobby Dodd would still punt on third down?

Joe Hamilton ? How can a Tech man say that and still be a Nazi racist for criticizing Reggie Ball. I think what your trying to say is that accomplishments on the field is what matters and not the color of a players skin. Hey Paul Hewitt. Can we get at least one white guy on the team. I’m sure there’s one in the state who can play. Just kidding. Well half kidding. I think UGA got the only Ginger in the state. I’ll second Joe Hamilton. He’s the greatest from 1980 to present. All I can remember (born in 78). Ken Swilling, Joe Burns, Kieth Brooking are up there. Sorry about the rant, but it had to be said.

Best lineman to play for Tech was Larry Stallings - Great defensive tackle and all pro linebacker for the old St. Louis Cardinals. He was a throw back - when he came to the practice field you had better be ready to hit.

By gtne80

One of the toughest college linebackers I ever saw….too small and too slow, but a guy that NEVER took a play off…went full speed on every play and played until he dropped…Ted Roof.

Pat Swilling, Robert Lavette, William Bell, and Gary Lee (with one beautiful kickoff runback that will live forever).

Got to echo the Lucius Sanford pick (LOOOOOOSHUSSSSS). I remember a GT-UGA game where he wrecked 3 different UGA QBs on 3 consecutive plays…they had to punt not only because it was 4th down, they didn’t have a QB left.

Watching Eddie Lee Ivery run was a thing of beauty.

You can’t leave out the “Refrigerator Mover” John Davis from Ellijay. 1st Team All Freshman, 2 time All American, could play every position on the line, spent 8 years in the NFL, and played on 4 Super Bowl teams with the Bills. He has to be the greatest Offensive Lineman in Tech history.

Played for UGA Tech in early 70’s… Was their best QB (numbers wise) in history when he left… Was first black starter in the Deep South at D1 level.. Good person too.. Go Dawgs!!

Eddie McAshan was great till Hosea Williams started chirping in his ear. Eddie Lee Ivery was the best though. I remember how no one could stop him especially in the UGA game. They were cheap shotting him all game and finally were able to break his knee on the bottom of the pile to get him out. His knee was never the same after that.

Hard question Mike. When a program has a winning percentage over the last 30 years hovering around 50%, it’s hard to say. I guess I got to go with Little Joe however. Even though without Ralph Freidgen he probably wouldn’t have been a blip on the radar screen either.

Glenn, I would get too worked up. It’s clear there are multiple ‘GREG’ characters who’s purpose is just to disrupt the Tech blog.

My suggestion is AJC.com needs to come up with some other way to do these blog entries so they can’t be hijacked by some punks just trying to be a pain in the rear. I don’t like these blogs cause they always get invaded by uga fans. There needs to be some kind of a log on system for repeat posters, that way people can be banned and posts deleted.

GTnumber1, I do not find pedophiles the least bit amusing, nor is it a joke to me. As an officer of the Court, I see things that are disgusting, and there is no room for these types of comments, on any site, at any time.

I have been assured that a criminal investigation is being conducted and the individual, whoever it is, will be prosecuted. Then I will make sure the rest of the “gang” in prison with him will know he is into children. Apropos, don’t you think?

Al “Bama” Richardson was class.

After starting out gangbusters, he blew out his knee and was told he would never walk normally again.

After long, hard rehab, were he also acted as a student coach, Al made it back to the playing field and was drafted by the Falcons. He was selected co-Defensive Rookie of the year.

Al was a great player but an even better person.

well back to the blog…… ;)

There’s a lot of more recent players being talked about here, not many 70’s players. Being born in the 70’s, my memory is a little sketchy from then, haha. The first player I actually remember watching was John Dewberry. Got his autograph when I was in first grade I think.

By Glenn

September 21, 2006 12:38 PM | Link to this

I would also add Drew Hill was a star on and off the field. At 5’8” he could dunk a basketball and a game breaker on the field.

When his class came up for the draft, Eddie Lee Ivory and Kent Hill were both First Round picks while Drew was taken in the twelfth round. Eddie Lee and Kent drove up in new sports care and Drew got a Dodge Aspen, I believe.

While he was teased mercilessly, Drew took it well and had a longer career than just about anyone in that entire draft. Drew always had the same smile on his face and was always a gentleman.

I think students should be sporting afros, bellbottoms, and other 70’s trends for this one. I hope we throwback to the navy jerseys one day. I know it’s not an official color, but shawn jones looked sharp in them ;)

GT90…Thanks for the update, I figured it would be top 15, but not that good. Glen sounds like a good man as well. With Dan Rad stiring the ship, and classes like this one, very good things are right around the corner. I hope what you say about that sicko greg is true, I don’t know weather to feel pity for him or disgust. He must have had a terrible childhood (if he’s out of it).

Glenn - I think it may be Everson, Burnette, and Morgan (as in Derrick). Yandell may be on that list in place of one. Word is that the coaches are going to Detroit Friday night to see Everson. Everson has always said that he wants to commit in person. Also heard that Derrick Morgan wanted to commit after the ND game, but will take his visits to make sure.

I’m sure that some schools will pass us in the recruiting rankings just by having more committed, but keep in mind that VA Tech is currently #9 and has 25 players already committed. So whatever Tech adds will only put space between us and the VA Tech’s of the world.

Keeping in the era there was Mike Owen a tight end that played for San Francico when he left Tech. Tommy Beck was one of the best unknowns of that era. The Rock was maybe the strongest dt to play for Tech. Let’s not forget little Jimmy Robinson who went on to play midget for the NY Giants and Atlanta. Steve Harky who went on to the Jets. I’m glad they are remembering that era of Tech. With all the coaching changes from Carson, to Fulcher to Rogers in a few short years some of these guys got short changed in their position with Tech. A lot of those teams finished as bowl teams and ranked in the top 20. Tech and even Georgia have done a better job of remembering the old players. This is good for the future.
