Some questions answered

One-fourth the way through the season and some of my questions are answered. To review:

What’s wrong with Tech’s offense? Nothing. It’s just taking longer to gel than I expected. Patrick Nix is adding creativity to the personnel, play calls, and formations. 500 total yards is great no matter who you’re playing.

When will we run a reverse to Calvin? Last Saturday! Good job, Patrick! A 21-yard gain at that!

Will we run other reverses to anyone else? Yes, we will. Grant added 51 yards on 2 carries.

Why don’t we throw the ball to Calvin? OK, maybe this one’s not completely answered, but to be honest, I didn’t want Calvin catching 10 passes for 150 yards against Troy. That would mean we didn’t run the ball effectively.

Who is going to emerge as the second receiver? James Johnson is becoming the go-to guy. He’s looking more and more comfortable in the offense. Although I think Greg Smith could be the real gem. He’s very physical as demonstrated by the catch over the middle where several Troy defenders couldn’t bring him down.

What’s up with these personal foul calls? Every game this year, we’ve gotten flagged with questionable personal foul calls. Surely, I’m not the only Tech fan who thinks these are bogus calls. When a quarterback is running for yardage, clearly we need to bring him down.

You are dead on about the personal foul calls. It is very obvious the officials have been given a directive to flag the helmet-to-helmet contact. No one wants to see players suffer bad injuries and I think it is probably a good move. However, the officials have to be sure of the call and not guessing. If they don’t see it clearly, they shouldn’t throw the flag, or they need to make it a reviewable penalty. In both cases it came at a pivotal point in a drive where we had held our opponent, and both had an impact on the game.

I did have to laugh at the ND game when the call was made and some Irish fans were saying it was a good call because it was roughing the QB. I had to explain to them that when he is out in the open, past the line of scrimmage, ball tucked away, he’s a running back. As bad as that call was, the one in the Troy game was even worse. Purely shoulder to shoulder, and the official waited for what seemed like a minute before he threw the flag. I guess we can only hope the calls will even out and when we get stopped on a third and 8 play they will throw one against our opponent.

The helmet to helmet calls were horrible. If that had been a running back it would not have been called. Once the QB crosses the line of scrimmage he is a running back and is fair game. If they are going to call helmet to helmet then they need to throw a flag on every single play of the game.

I also felt they did not throw to Calvin near enough in the Samford and Troy games. I’m hoping they just wanted to work on other players and other aspects of the offense for those games b/c it’s so easy to just “Throw it to Calvin”. I hope to see more of him Thursday like we did against Notre Dame.

When will Reggie Ball realize that Calvin Johnson could make him an All-American? The two of them could become like Jordan and Pippen if they can figure it out….

I have to agree on the personal foul calls too. It seems we are always getting flagged on questionable plays. The one against Troy was ridiculous. They also both came at critical plays in the games, when the other team was in the red zone. I do hope we throw it to Calvin more but I was also pleased to see others step up in the offense. No need for everyone to see all of our plays yet especially against non-conference opponents. Running the ball and passing to different players can only help us. Who is this Greg guy? What an idiot!

There’s not a Tech fan on earth who thinks Tech needs to get the ball to Calvin more. However, their opponents aren’t living in a vacuum. They know that as much as we do. Against ND, Calvin was the weapon they sought to use. But against Samford and Troy, they needed to establish other weapons before they get into ACC play. Sure they could have threw the ball to CJ 20 times in either of those games, but what happens against tougher competition when they double and triple team CJ? You need to have other options, and I’d rather they find those options against Samford and Troy, than trying to figure it out against ACC opponents. Now the ACC has film on James Johnson, Choice, Grant, etc. and they double or triple CJ at their own peril.

Greg Smith is a stud; he got the team going in the 3rd Quarter Saturday with his 3rd down catch and some good strong running. I liked James Johnson a lot last year, but he’s drop some pretty easy catches this year, an important one on 3rd down against ND. Hopefully he’s gotten all those out of his system. Now this greg on the blog is so pathetic, even the Mutt Nation won’t claim him and he relishes the attention that comes with being a complete loser, sad. Have some pity for him though; his parents must have abused him pretty bad as a child.

gt fan and jackets fan;

Ignore GREG like everyone else. Skip any comments in CAPS by him.

All he is looking for is attention and you are giving it to him by responding. Trust me, nothing you can say will get through or mean anything.

Asking Reggie to “figure” anything out is way too much to expect. Reggie is not the brightest bulb in any pack and shockingly after four years it is amazing that you Tech fans are still having trouble realizing it.

I am encouraged with some of the new plays being run on offense. So far I think Nix is doing a pretty good job. Against UVA I hope to see a huge night running the football, not neccessarily a big night from CJ.

At least he hasn’t thrown the ball away on 4th down lately!! Tell me bugs, when Ball leaves will you still think he’s the next Joe Hamilton and lead you to the promise land? Face it…that loser hasn’t lived up to 1/4 of the hype and expectations that surrounded him when he came in. Say hello to your version of Quincy Carter!!
