ACC looks inviting

The preliminaries are over. Now is when the games start to count.

Thursday night’s game against Virginia is the first of eight consecutive ACC games for Georgia Tech (with one open date thrown in). The beginning of the ACC schedule didn’t carry as much weight in years when Georgia Tech didn’t have much chance to compete. This season looks different, not only because Tech looks a little better than usual, but because the competition looks a lot worse.

It’s still early, with plenty of football to play, but the Yellow Jackets just might have found the right time to have one of their better teams. Most of the teams on the ACC schedule, with the possible exception of Virginia Tech, look to be having off years. It might be hard for Georgia Tech to find a better chance to compete for an ACC title.

A positive attitude would go a long way. Most GT fans are so mad at Chan Gailey or Reggie Ball or what color gold jerseys they wear, etc. that they cannot pay attention to the golden opportunity that GT has this year. UGA built their program up while Florida and Tennessee were having down years. As Tech fans, lets stop worrying about the past let down losses or any of the other petty stuff and just be good fans! Anyone else with me?

Tech has a very good defense. That should bode well.

The way Miami got whipped by Louisville even after they lost Bush and Brohm was an eye opener, even more surprising than the beating they took against LSU in the bowl game.

The ACC is clearly down this year and Tech looks like they have a good chance in most of their ACC games.

The best (only) way to start is just beat Va! Do not think/worry about eight in a row until we win the first. I know this sounds simple…and it is. One at a time. I can remember relaxing in the fall sunshine in Durham a couple years ago…

GT might get a good bowl game, but an ACC title?

Does anyone honestly think they can take down the Hokies?

I hope the senior leadership will materialize for this team (if it hasn’t already) and actually help us achieve the cliche “one game at a time” mentality. I honestly don’t see a game on the schedule that this team can’t beat if they have consistent focus and preparation. It’s going to be a great season! Go Jackets!

Thank you StinGT. One game at a time should be the Mantra. We have lost too many games by losing focus.

This team has the talent. Just focus on the game at hand.

Clemson might be tougher than VT, but the opportunity is here. I’m with you GTgirl25, too much negativity. Dan Rad will/is taking care of that, and so will these new recruits coming in. The Future is bright, much brighter than NC State, UNC, UVA, Miami, and even FSU for that matter.

The ACC is down this year, even VA TECH is breaking in a new QB! One game at a time is the only way to approach this, and hope the coaches can find a way to fix the Special Teams! GO JACKETS!

I’m a “prove it” kind of guy. At this point I’m still seeing 3 losses in conference, namely VT, Clempson, and Miami.

Yes, the competition appears weaker as a whole. UVA losses to Pitt and Western Michigan make them appear to be down. Maryland got blown out by WVU but hung in despite the big deficit. UNC loses to Rutgers and barely scrapes by Furman. NCState loses to Akron and Southern Miss. And of course, there’s Duke. We should win those 4 handily if we don’t lose concentration (see Gailey’s first 3 years).

Miami has lost two games, but to pretty good teams. Yes we beat them last year. I think we can compete, but I’m still not convinced that we are their equal (yet). The best hope there is that they get one more loss between now and then and have an implosion.

We haven’t come close to Va Tech (especially in Blacksburg).

That leaves Clempson. At home, I might feel better about that game…don’t see us doing it in DV.

And, of course, out of conference we still have the Puppies in Athens. Prove to me that we can beat them and I’ll be a believer.

I’m still seeing a 7-5 regular season campaign. Good news with the other ACC teams struggling, maybe that’s good enough for a bowl game in the Eastern time zone.

I’ll believe a Chan Gailey coached team will “run the table” when I see it. The way he coaches loses you 3 games you should win-right off the bat. Then, you struggle to win one or two you shouldn’t and you end up with four or five losses. I do like the way Nix is taking advantage of Reggie’s one strength(the threat of the run) better than Chan ever did.

By jabba17

September 18, 2006 08:52 PM | Link to this

There’s no conference team on the sked we can’t beat, except for maybe Va. Tech. Miami and Clempsun are both beatable (Miami at home for HoCo and Clempsun in Mildly Unpleasant Valley, where the Jackets practically have home field advantage) and the rest of our conference sked is a joke.

If Chan can’t beat…

UNC (lost to the Vandy of the Big Easy, blown out by the Turkey Hoagies, and barely squeaked by Furman) NCSU (lost to MAC powerhouse Akron and Southern Miss) Puke (say no more, especially if the Leaky Roof defense remains in place) UVA (blown out by Pitt, squeaked by WY, lost to Directional Michigan) Maryland (beat powerhouses William and Mary and MTSU before getting stomped by the ‘Eers)

…then there’s no hope.

Let’s dust off the O’Leary rules…the UVA season is Thursday and let’s go undefeated. Then we can concern ourselves with the trip to Blacksburg and maybe pull an Orange Bowl against the Butterballs.

I guess you forget the run is why we beat Auburn twice and Miami last year. But I guess 130 against Troy means more than the back-breaking run against Miami’s defense.

To be a smart school, we have a large collection of dumb fans.

WaCoJacket - Your sentiments are quite accurate. We’ve got a chance to be real good. We look pretty good so far. Our QB, Reggie Ball - at times unfairly criticized - had a very solid game against Troy, setting a school record that will probably stand up for good while. I hope all our fans will get behind the team and stay positive (even if we happen to drop one along the way). Enjoy the ride! Go Jackets!!

I know that we should take one game at a time, but i cannot help but be excited about the way the schedule is shaping up….especially with a young VT team, and over-rated Miami team (at home)….the tough one will defy be Clemson…however, what i have noticed is that in clemson’s schedule, or miami’s schedule, or VT’s schedule - they don’t really have a tough game the week prior to playing us/ or we have a bye week to rest up…I think that really bodes well for us…GO JACKETS!

Congratulations mites! You actually have a chance to win 8 games. Playing in the worst conference in colege football certainly gives you a boost. BUT…you are still tech. You will get toasted by UGA and Reggie inevitably implodes against the BEST defense in the state of Georgia. (not yours) And then you get to be overmatched in a better bowl game than you are accustomed to and suffer embarrassment once again in front of the entire country. It must be great to be a tech fan! In response to GTNE80, your analysis may be a bit off. VT is breaking in a new QB and have not had a true test of any sort. Like UGA, they’re ranking comes from pre-season. I think we have as good a chance as we had against Auburn last year.

We play well in Death Valley. Clemson will be a tough, close game (always is), but, and someone correct me if my facts are wrong, but we’ve won the past two meetings there. They win in ATL, we win in Death Valley. It’s not unusual.

Kyle Wright has thrown ONE TD pass this year, and it was in the Florida Atlantic or International or whatever school that was game. No, we’re not Louisville, but we certainly aren’t that much worse that FSU, either. They only rushed for about 47 yards against Troy, and Reggie had 130 on his own. That’s a good yardstick.

The last time we beat UGA was in Athens with Godsey, I believe.

I think we play both Miami and Clemson tight and neither is an automatic loss. If we go into Blacksburg with some confidence, I think we can pull it out. If we show, up, we can beat any of them. Therefore we could go to the ACC Championship game. This is very doable. Have some faith, and I hope you yell on third downs if you come to the games.

I find it hallarious that everyone considers that Tech must wait for the rest of the ACC to drop to their level instead of Tech rising…The SEC does nothing of the sort and is obviously a superior conference.

By Glenn

September 19, 2006 04:24 PM | Link to this

AFinPC;

Since the ACC placed more first rounders in the NFL draft than any other conference this year, it is understandable that there will need to be some reloading.

There is one area where the SEC has done a better job than the ACC…Getting kids who couldn’t qualify academically in the ACC.

Therefore, they will always have a few more players hanging around and don’t have to reload as often.

By Glenn

September 19, 2006 04:35 PM | Link to this

And AFinPC, the word is spelled “hilarious” not “hallarious”…you must have attended an SEC school…Spell check is a free application, if you can figure out where to get it.

Thanks for the intelligent discourse, Legal Jacket. Reading through a lot of the posts makes one appreciate someone taking the time and effort to put some thought into a post.

I would be the first to admit it and the happiest about it if my analysis proves incorrect as you predict.

What would make me happy as a Tech alum and fan would be NOT repeating the Gailey tradition of letting down in one of the games that we SHOULD win. UNC, NCST, UVA, MD, and DUKE should be wins (we should be favored in all). If we can take care of business, that gives us 7 wins.

The second part of the equation would be pulling off at least one win (and hopefully two wins) against Miami, VT, Clempson, or UGA(g). As a true fan, a win over the pups would be sweetest, but I’d take wins against Miami and Clempson and a 9-3 season and feel warm all winter.

Having Miami at home gives me some hope for that game. The other 3 are on the road in some tough places. I hear what you say about the road team winning in the GT-CU games, but I take any road win in DV as a “steal.”
