How/when will Jackets ‘arrive’?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I get the sense from talking to a variety of Tech fans that there’s a mix of folks in two camps.
One group is saying, “There’s no way Troy is going to beat us; tell the overconfident Trojans fans they’re nuts.” The other is saying, “I sure hope we don’t play sloppy,” or “We can’t afford to get slack,” or “An upset would be a disaster.”
Should this program get to where it needs to be, EVERYBODY would be in the first category here, like they are at the big-shot programs.
Question, then: What would constitute arrival at this point, meaning where the only talk of an upset against this kind of team is nothing more than fodder for laughter? Consecutive nine-win seasons? One ACC championship?
Talk among yourselves.

Consistancy. From the team and the fans.
Tech has demonstrated the abiilty to have amazing performances: beating undefeated NCSU with AJ Suggs @ NCSU. Auburn (home and away). Miami. Blow-out of Tulsa. Blow-out of Syracuse.
Tech has also demonstrated the ability to have amazing melt-downs.
We want to believe that our team can play at the high level we’ve seen. It has shown it can. However the danger of an unexplainable meltdown at any point has made fans gun-shy. “Here they go again.”
What I saw from GT at the ND game made me proud. I didn’t recongize the place. Fans of other teams at the game and watching at home have told me the place sounded very different. It was.
Our team and our fans have had flashes of the big-time. It’s time we had the courage to be accountable to each other, set our goals high, and grab the brass ring.

It’ll take the alumni from the 70’s and 80’s finally becoming “fans.”
That group was so mistreated by the Administration that they expect abject failure to come around every corner.
They don’t completely support the program, because they’re afraid it will crush them.
They rarely give unwavering support, show up only for the “Georgia” game, don’t wear OUR colors, and rarely follow the rest of college sports.
We’ll arrive when that group finally shows up because they love Georgia Tech, not because Tech playing well is a curiosity.
The 90’s alumni seem to be putting most of their support in the program, vocally and monetarily.
Fix the “gap” between 50-40yr olds and 18-30 year olds, and Tech will have “arrived.”

Excellent comment. There are an incredible amount of Alum from the 70s & 80s that have pulled back. We will never lose our love for the tradition and the school, just the admin for the last 10 years.
Rememeber, when we talk about let downs, a fish rots from the head down. Let’s fix the head and it gets better. With dave B out and Dan R in it has to get better or there will be change… Go Jackets!

When we stop losing the games that we shouldn’t lose. Luckily we haven’t done that yet this year but there are still some bombs in the road ahead like a loss to MD.
Since the Gailey era began we have had a schizo team that wins big games, loses easy games and can’t get any traction against UGA.
The offense has got to generate more points - you can’t be a big time program without putting points on the board. This is one thing that the Tech team did under O’Leary. We didn’t have the talent then that we have now, but there was a better offensive game plan (but still a lack of balls).
I am a late 90’s grad and have been a steadfast supporter and season ticket holder through the years as have countless friends of mine from that era. We want to stop being shocked by the unexplainable losses. Once that happens the fans will unite. It starts today - taking care of business and moving on to the VA game and playing consistently through the ACC schedule.
I think that the response from the fans this year is better than in years past, even at the Samford game there was a great showing of support from the fans. Now if the coaching staff and team can deliver a 9-10 win season, the fans will continue to rally.

I love GT football and have for 45 years. We have a great tradition. Who can forget the ‘62 7-6 upset pver the Bear’s #1 ranked Crimson tide. Bobby Dodd’s last team in ‘66 with Kim King and Lenny Snow. I was absolutely ecstatic when Pepper brought in the wishbone and crushed UGA 34-14 in 1974. The 23-16 victory over ND in ‘76 with little Gary Lanier confusing the Irish was priceless. I saw in person the 1980 3-3 tie with ND. I watched with pride the Ted Roof led “Black Watch” defense in ‘85. Who can ever forget Shawn Jones, Coleman, Rudolph and Swilling et al and the 1990 national champs. Has their ever been a more exciting quarterback than “Little Joe” Hamilton? Dez White, Kelly Campbell and Kerry Watkins lighting up the scoreboard brought immense pleasure. What joy it was to watch the much maligned Reggie Ball lead GT to a 17-3 victory over powerhouse Auburn as a true freshman and then repeat the feat two years later AT Auburn. GT has a proud tradition. Wake up and smell the coffee!

ANSWER:
WHEN CHAN GAILEY IS GONE.
NEVER LIKED HIM, AND DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT CHANGING MY MIND.
Cause as long as he’s HC, Tech will never beat Georgia or win an ACC championship.
Write it down.

First step to see if this program has arrived and be consistent - changing the entire offensive coaching staff (if Chan continues to be the HC).
If not, then we need a HC who puts first the need to score points to win games!

Thanks for bringing out the FACT that there are 2 camps at Georgia Tech:
One who believes Chan is going in the right direction.
One that believes Chan has never gone in the right direction.
I happen to be one who believes the latter - until Chan is removed as HC of GT, we will never be a ‘program’ feared or consistently in the Top 25!

I’m an 80’s grad and don’t have a clue what you’re talking about with the adiminstration. I have been a supporter (financially) since I graduated. I live in Chicago so only attend the homecoming game each year. What mistreatment are you guys talking about?

I agree the answer is a coach that knows how to spell offense. I am still amazed they extended CG’s contract. Incredible!

Wink, what the hell are you doing over here amongst the Bugs?
A man with your talents (and I’m being totally serious) is wasted on this school’s athetic teams and “fans.”
Why do these frauds get you, while us loyal Dawgs are stuck with that piece of crap Carter Strickland?
It’s just not fair. For you, and for us! You should be covering big-time football, whether it be the Falcons or the Dawgs.
The only thing I can think of is that this is some kind of punishment for getting cheeky with Mora. It’s cruel and unusual punishment, Wink, to have to cover the Bugs!
But to answer your question, the Bugs will never have that moment. And as I loyal Fan of Chan, I can only hope he is made Coach Emmeritus, and stays with the Bugs until he dies.

Never going to happen. The typical GT fan expects the worst, so that they are not disapointed when the worst happens. I guess it is from years of disappointment. I don’t fall into that category, but I certainly understand!

Getting some swagger. Do not be stupid thuggish like Miami, but beat the teams you are supposed to beat for 5 years or so.
The only teams GT should be competing with is VT and Miami yearly and FSU when we play them. We should beat Clemson UVA BC 8 out of 10 times and everyone else 10 out of 10.

When will we arrive? I am not sure, but I can tell you that we never will until we get behind Chan and his decisions, especially with his decision to stick with Reggie at quarterback. He may not be great, but he is the best we have. I was so disgusted at Saturday’s game listening to fan after fan yelling for Taylor Bennett to get into the game in the first quarter. Taylor Bennett? That guy can’t run the 40 without the coaching staff breaking out a calendar to time him.
Without Reggie’s 130 yards rushing (a Tech record) we might have lost that game. The two interceptions weren’t his fault, and several of the incompletions were caused by tremendous pressure from missed blocking assignments. Taylor Bennett would have been sacked numerous times had he been in the game.
Other than special teams, the coaches had a well prepared game plan. I thought coach Nix did a great job incorporating Rashaun Grant’s talents into the offense. The defense had a few lapses, but looked pretty good. We have plenty of team speed, but not enough size on the offensive and defensive lines. As a result, we are probably headed for another crappy 7-5 year. But with a great recruiting class on the way, we might just be on the cusp of “arriving”. GO JACKETS!

Look, say what you want about Chan. Whether correct or not, he hasn’t done enough to separate himself from the critism.
But as for Reggie, like it or not he’s the best QB on the roster. Look at Samford. He played in the first half and the offense produced. Bennett came in the game during the third quarter. He didn’t do anything. We managed three points. In UConn last year, he made the TD pass to Johnson and not much else. We were lucky that game was against UConn.
I like the Bennett kid. I’ve talked with him at fan photo day. He’s a rootable guy—moreso than Reggie when you are talking personality. I think that Bennett makes the right reads but the kiss of death is that he doesn’t throw with touch—generally overthrown. Which may mean he just gets a little to excited and is releasing the ball too early. (Now back to discussion on the coaching staff developing talent, I’m sure.)
Now I can say this, from the Samford game to the reps he got in the Troy game, Taylor did improve. If he gets into the game with UVA late (which I expect) hopefully he’ll put together even more.
However like it or lump it, Reggie is currently the best QB on the roster.

We will have arrived when we compete in every game win or lose. Chan’s first trip to Athens we quit, VT last year we quit, Utah we didn’t quit we never showed.
And yes this inability to at least always come to play has made those of us from the Pepper Rodgers and Bill Curry days very pessimistic.
Chan’s major accomplishment - not having a one win or zero win season yet but then again I don’t remember a schedule so lacking in competition as Troy and Samford back to back. And don’t throw ND at me, we lost and they are overrated (see Michigan Game).
As a side note. Kiss Calvin goodbye. 2 for 9 is not All-America stats against Troy State and no All America no hype for Round 1 and no Round 1 no $$$$$. And this hurts recruiting because no player is coming to GT to get coached down or misutilized.

In case anyone hasn’t noticed…our recruiting class is just as good as UGAg’s this year and will continue to be with Dan R. at the helm. Poor GREG was bullied too much as a kid and now uses the blog to get all his redneck aggression out because he won’t get punch in the nose like he did in grade school. Very unlikely he made through high school, otherwise there too.
BIRD DAWG, still dreams of Herschel and “run Lindsey run”. When you have no life at all, you speak like a BIRDDAWG, and by the way…once you start playing somebody beginning the sixth game, you’ll need Lady Luck and some home cooking refereeing to win half of the rest and that’s against us bugs too.
IMGT81…are you disappointed we beat Troy. By your logic, we should have lost. If you can’t see the strong foundation being built, please try looking…and who out here really believes CJ will be back next year? Your absolutely insane if you don’t think CJ will be a top ten pick! Even Houston Texan’s aren’t that stupid.

I know that Chan is not the coach most people want, but let’s compare his record with other recent coaches.
Georgia Tech coaching records (listed in order of winning percentage).
George O’Leary 52-33 (.612)
Chan Gailey 30-23 (.566)
Bobby Ross 31-26-1. (.544)
Pepper Rodgers 34-31-2 (.523)
Bill Curry 31-43-4 (.419)
Bill Lewis 11-19 (.367)
I can remember walking by the football stadium my junior year during the 1989 season and reading a message written in freshly poured concrete that proclaimed “ROSS MUST GO”! I understand that Bobby Ross turned things around the next season and won the ‘90 Championship. However, the very next year we went 8-5. Sounds very Chan-like to me.

Virginia comes to our house Thursday. Everything on papers says we win, but my gut says we will blow it. I have got to admit the rest of the ACC outside Virginia Tech and Clemson looks soft. They are looking like a Curry coached team losing or coming close to losing to 1AA teams and non BCS teams. I can’t remember the ACC being this soft in years. Of course we have to play Va.Tech and Clemson, but I am happy if we get by Virginia Thursday and beat a team we are suppose to in the ACC.

Ramble On - Where does my logic say we lose to Troy on the field? We lost credibility by even scheduling them back to back with Samford. Hard to tell if a strong foundation is being built when the “load” is Samford and Troy. As for CJ if he were having fun and putting up stats he might stay but given the horrific utilization of his talents by GT Coaches he cannot afford to stay. At some point production will be valued over potential even by the NFL Draft. That point won’t be lost on recruits with talent either. This great class we have coming in is no certainty until Signing Day. And be assured no opportunity will be missed to point out to these recruits how we “used” Calvin - 2 catches for 9 yards.
