Itching for ACC action
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
I dunno about others, but I’m ready for Tech to dive into the ACC. Maybe it was all the buzz that came with a season-opening game against Notre Dame that’s warped my vantage point, but back to back weeks of Samford and Troy in the wake of that game has made it tough to get into.
In the long run, it’s probably a good thing all the way around. Starting the season off with excitement, then having two games to tweak things in before the conference schedule, but I wish Tech was playing an ACC game this week. Silly me.
It would be a surprise if the Jackets play as many this Saturday as last. I don’t think Troy’s going to allow that to happen. Then again, with the next game being just five days later, the urge to pull some starters a little earlier than usual might be there.
Getting Michael Johnson back in time for him to get a game’s worth of work before the ACC schedule is a good thing. With him, Tech has three DEs Tenuta can be comfortable rotating in on a regular basis, while leaving Anoai in the DT rotation (which is a solid four strong, at least). At least that’s what I think the Jackets will do. Reminds me of the Dallas Cowboys’ D-line of the mid-1990s, when they played eight, and they were almost all monsters (Lett, Maryland, Haley, Jeffcoat, et al).
Someone asked Chan Gailey yesterday why he chose to hook up new punt returner Andrew Smith for counseling with former Tech PR Kelley Rhino when there are so many PRs available.
Don’t know where all these PRs are available for a chat with Andrew, maybe there’s a hotline or something, but doesn’t that seem kind of obvious? Rhino was at Tech just a few years ago, he wasn’t real big, and more importantly, according to Gailey, they’re similar in skill sets. “They share the same speed,” he said, which means not a whole heck of a lot. But they’re both quick, which is critical in returning punts if one’s savvy enough to get upfield right away rather than dancing around and hoping the first tackler or two or three happen to miss so one can take off in a full sprint.
Doubt, say, Deion Sanders, would be able to advise Smith as well.
Big fan of PRs who go straight forward immediately, unless they’re about to get crushed, and then worry about making a move or two.
About a month or so ‘til hoops begin to crank it up; looking forward to that.

Matt- I can’t wait for hoops either. Thanks for the coverage from both you and Mike Knobler. The level of detail you provide in these blogs has been great.

I wish the Virginia game was this week… not because I’m looking past Troy or anything, but one just doesn’t get the same TV coverage up in PA… GT rips Troy, destroys UVA on national television and heads into the VT game (for most, if not all the marbles) at 3-1. Go Jackets!

The ACC looks weak this year which is a bad omen for the Jackets. Though I worry about teams like Troy because of teams like Utah that are about even with Troy, beating us, I worry more about ACC teams that are not good. They have played us every year and since we change very little, no matter how bad the other coach is he finally figures out what is going on with us. Don’t worry about playing the middle except in short yardage situations. Don’t guard the tight end if he happens to wonder anywhere off the line. Poor special teams which flips the field and makes a conservative play even more manditory and bring the defense in with little rest. About the fourth quarter we realize it is close and panic. All this plays much better when playing a top 20 team than Duke.

First off I love the Jackets but I swear if we find some way to screw up this year I think we should can Chan and go hire the Kennesaw State University Womens Soccer Coach i really think he could do a better job than Chan LOL How hard is it to throw the ball up in the air and let the best reciever in the nation jump over the defensive backs and win football games. Maybe we understand that finally. We will see next Thursday. GO JACKETS!!!!

I am fairly certain Greg is from the “short bus” The spelling on this blog is the worst I have ever seen. The Jackets have a chance to be really good and 3-1 is no stretch.
Throw the ball to Calvin and win!
How simple is that?

we should of beaten Notre Dame if not for chan gailys poor playcalling at the end of the game and not going for it on 4th and 1 when we had momentum! not the first time not being agressive has hurt as atlanta team (last years falcons when we punted the ball with under 2 min to play against carolina) Anyways we have a good team that i think is top 10 material…man if we only had a college playoff system i would take college football more seriously. GO Falcons, and Go Ga Tech Basketball!! cant wait…!!!

Funny - how do you blame Chan for calling poor plays when it was Nix that was calling them.

Funnier how you say Tech is a top 10 team. They might be in the top 10 of the ACC. Nice article on CJ building toilets, you Tech guys do get a great education. Building toilets kind of parallels his decision to go to Tech…everything goes down the crapper.

To the moron calling himself “Heluva (sic) Engineer”: I thought the article about building latrines was really cool, and shows why CJ chose to come to GT- to get an education you can’t get anywhere else. He could have chosen to go to Athens and learn to CLEAN toilets, while his future went down the crapper.

Chan should have gone for it on 4th and 1 in the ND game. They also should not have gone for a draw from the shotgun on 3rd and 1 and then punted. Decisions like that are critical to the success of the team, and they are also statements indicating lack of faith in your players abilities. I remember going to the GT Uconn game a few years ago and they opened up with a playaction pass to Calvin that went for about 47 yards. I would love to see more of that. Tech is currently assembling an outstanding recruiting class, and if they do that for several years we will finally cross the threshold into regular top 15 teams. I think we will actually win more than seven games this year. GO TECH!

Bob, the way you blame Chan for the play calling is that he still makes the big calls such as weather to go for it on fourth down. Nix then calls the specific play. I am sure Chan told Nix to put the ball in the middle of the field for a short field goal on third down in the ND game and we ended up with single (short) man coverage on Calvin on the right side. Nix just called the run play that centerd the ball as Chan ordered him to. Chan should have let Nix call for a pass to the flag in the right back corner of the endzone and let Calvin out jump the shorter corner. Even if it was not there RB throws it out the back of the endzone and on fourth down you kick a short field gaol from the right hash mark! Centering the ball on third down was a give-up call!

The big misunderstanding from the “Heluva Engineer” is people don’t just chose Tech, Tech choses them. This elite education stuff is hard to follow, but I wouldn’t be showing up at North Ave. with my books in hand next September if I were you because you don’t sound like you will be on the guess list. Just for kicks that all the pro football players out of the mix which aren’t more that 10 out of 60 players then see which players have the highest paid jobs if any out of college. Now maybe you began to see why more and more enlighten high school players, students and parents hope their child is one of the choosen few at Tech. Remember a elite education is not an entitlement and it stays with you a lot longer than dah…football.
