Good omen for Saturday’s game

Troy’s strong showing against Florida State on Saturday was the best thing that could have happened for Georgia Tech.

No matter what the Trojans said about building on that outcome in their upcoming game against the Yellow Jackets, college football history suggests teams that play over their heads one week don’t often repeat the feat the next.

And the Tech game isn’t Troy’s last chance at a big victory, either. Troy plays at Nebraska the following week and at in-state opponent UAB the week after that. You can’t be sky high four consecutive weeks, and Troy was against FSU.

Troy still scares me. GA Tech is historically infamous for losing to teams they should easily beat. We need another convincing win.

Mark,

You are right.

P.S. 47,000 in attendance out of 55,000 at last Saturday’s game against Samford, does not represent a half-filled stadium.

I think the worst thing Troy could of done “if they wanted to sneek up and steal one from GT” was to upset or almost upset FSU.

GT might of overlooked Troy thinking of the UVA game 5 days later. Now Troy has GT’s undivided attention.

Not saying Troy cannot still play well (and win) but GT coaches and players cannot use an excuse that they were looking forward to the UVA game if they lose this saturday.

But it will not happen, GT wins by 17.

Uhm, no worries Jackets - America has already seen what you did to a top flight offense in your stadium - I saw it in person. ND showed America Saturday just how good that Tech Defense is. Anyone out there think anyone in the ACC (after seeing the first couple of weeks) have near the offensive firepower of the Irish? Tech is going to have a great year, as long as they remain focused. Keep it up Jackets - i was so impressed with your showing against my Irish, that I’m going to go to the Virginia and Maryland games (instead of selling my tix).

I’m a Troy alum, and I can tell you Troy plays up to whatever talent they are playing against. In 2004, we beat 18th ranked Missouri. Two weeks later, we lost to LSU only because they ran a kickoff return back at the end of the game. I’m not saying Troy is going to beat Tech. But I’m telling you Gailey is right in that last Saturday night in Tallahassee should not have surprised anybody.

Ralph, thanks for posting the comment on Mr. Knobler’s little (incorrect) dig about attendance in the Sunday write up. It bothered me because I was very impressed with the number of folks in the seats for a Div. 1-AA opponent.

Funky whiteboy, I’m glad you are saying our D is pretty good because no one in the national media is giving them any credit whatsoever. I know you swore you were not going to be around after the first game, but I’m glad you are. This blog could use more good posters and you easily fit in that category.

Does anyone else want to see Bennett get some snaps with the first-teamers? He certainly doesn’t have Ball’s mobility, or experience, but if he is the man next year, I’ll be pretty OK with that. I didn’t think much of him in the UCONN game last year, but he can put the ball on the money when he has the time.

Anyway, the next two are must wins for us if Tech is going to start making steps towards getting better. No matter the history, we should beat Troy and UVA, who always plays us tough, is obviously struggling. Losing either would be a huge setback for the program.

Agreed that Tech must win the next two. If we slip up against either Troy or UVA it will be a very long season….

Win these two and tech could make a run for the ACCCG. VT did not impress me that much against UNC. The only problem is that we play them at home. Still could be a good year for the jackets as long as we can beat Troy and UVA.

George P. Thanks for the props - I had a lot of fun talking back and forth with the Tech fans (and also the Dawg fans that wander over here for flavor. You know the reason they do that is that some of them just yearn for a higher class of conversation!)

George, if there is one thing I know it’s football - and the national media isn’t that high on GT because they haven’t had the unfortunate pleasure of watching their team try and move the ball on that defense IN PERSON. There was a guy on a blog last week trying to tell me I was nuts for thinking that Notre Dame was going to whip Penn State and all the other Big 10 teams (on the Barnhardt blog) because of their speed. Well George, we see who is laughing now don’t we? Tech has BIG TIME team speed on offense and defense (especially defense). And when the GT ND game basically boiled down to a slugfest because ND was staying with them step for step - I knew that once we got into the Big 10 - they would find out what Southern Speed was all about.

I’ll see you guys at the Virginia game - Go Jackets!!! and Go IRISH.

Hey Guys!

Good to see you still here PTFMW! I was so glad ND completely demolished Penn State. I knew they would! We got no respect after the ND game, oh well what can you do? I told a few ND fans that now that my pre-game hatred for ND subsided, I wanted them to go 12-0, win the NC, and (hottie) Brady Quinn for Heisman!

Completely off topic, but I have to admit, Ohio State is the real deal and Troy Smith looks good for Heisman too!

Go Jackets…..THWG (a team that I will never not hate!)

If you took the time to watch ND/PSU, you realize that the score is an aberration. If they could some how turn around and play one another again in a couple of weeks or so, the outcome could very easily be flipped over, in Penn States favor. GT played a helluva game against ND, and unfortunately for both the Lions and Jackets, CFB is a ‘wait til next year’ type of game. Thats one of the great things about it. I look for solid seasons for both Tech and PSU…and the Irish as well, (although I still don’t believe that they are a National Championship caliber team). That said, if they manage to go unscathed thru their tough schedule, there aren’t too many other teams out there that look dominant this season. It oughta be fun.

I’m not going to say Tech should overlook Troy. But nobody should look at Florida State’s rushing yard totals against Troy and assign any praise on Troy for that accomplishment. FSU has had a terrible rushing game for the last year and a half. They had 1 yard of rushing against Miami. We know Miami has a tough defense, but Tech was able to run against it, not for a ton of yards, but enough to win the game last season. Tech should be able to run, especially since they have a mobile QB, unlike FSU, against Troy. Any defense is better when they only have to defend one aspect. But Troy won’t be able to only key in on CJ, they’ll have to protect against Choice, Grant and Ball. But just in case, Tech needs to work really hard this week on Troy.

Steve - an abberation? I don’t know - let me quote an MBA classmate of mine from ND who also has his undergrad degree from Penn State, and is a Pittsburgh native. “In about the third quarter it hit me, this was the 2004 AFC Championship game all over again. Charlie was doing the same thing to PSU’s 3-4 that he and Tom Brady did to the Steelers and their 3-4. And the Pats won 41-27.”

Now I’ll grant you that the early complexion of the game could have been different if PSU had not muffed that first field goal - but the same could be said about the two ND overthrown receivers in the end zone - where ND settled for field goals.

Morelli is a good one that will get better as the year progresses - See Brandon Cox last year.

ND’s trap game - UCLA in South Bend. Watch this one.

Steve, I can’t stand when people say “oh, if only [insert lame excuse here] hadn’t happened, we could have beaten [insert good team here].” GT could easily have said the same thing about the VT game last year, as we gained similar yardage and had an opportunity at a field goal early in the first quarter. Bottom line (I was there): we got rocked! If you get beat by 20, it’s not an “almost” type of game.

Whiteboy: you rock. I respect people who know and love football, regardless of who their team is. Stay true to ND. Their best days are ahead of them. Let’s hope they put an end to the USC recruiting dynasty.

Here’s a prediction: GT does not lose until they play Clemson or maybe UM. That’s right, GT wins on the road at VT. I live in VA and get a lot of coverage. Yes they are ranked high. Yes they’ve got one of the best 5 coaches in the game. And, yes they do have the toughest stadium I’ve ever been in including FSU, UM, UGA, GT, AU and Pro-Player. But, what they don’t have is an experienced line. An article in the paper talked about one of their linemen getting dropped by a Div I-AA player. That should make the entire Tech defense do the happy dance. And regarding my comment above, last year’s game was closer than the 1,000,000 - 7 final score. An immobile QB could have made things look a little differently. The bottom line is this. If GT can make Brady Quinn run around scared for 25 minutes with 4 seniors and the best recruit at OL in the nation, what can we do to an immobile QB with only two returning starters? And by the way, much like our D, theirs will ultimately fail when completely let down by their offense on September 30.

I am not as confident based on the ND game. Quinn had a bad day against us for the first 3 quarters, he badly over threw 5 wide open receivers. Some of that was defensive pressure but not all of it. In addition our special teams, in particular kickoff coverage is disgraceful! I hope I’m wrong but special teams and a tired defense late in games will cost us some games. The offense needs to be able to burn clock late in games and give the D some rest. Coach Gailey and Kelly need to get to work and fix the kickoff coverage. There is no excuse for being ranked 118 out of 119 schools with one of your games against a division 1AA team!

September 12, 2006 01:01 PM | Link to this

Brady Quinn overthrew those receivers because he was getting rocked by DE’s and Linebackers every other play….a.k.a he was hearing the footsteps. Tech should keep that up and not be so quick to play prevent defense every time the forth quarter starts.

Kevin…you’ve never seen a close 20 point game? Boy, I have. On every level. It happens every week. Just as I’ve seen single digit outcomes when the losing team gets pretty much dominated. Statistically, yes…but not necessarily on numbers alone. A loss is a loss…that much is clear. I was at BDS@HGF Saturday, and the updates from South Bend were disheartening…based simply on the score. When I finally got to sit and watch the whole game, my dismay turned into a state of “p**”, (if that is even a word). It wasn’t as bad as the final score indicated, period. I take nothing away from the Irish. As I stated in my original post, if they manage to run the table this season, they will have earned a NC, as much or more than ANY team has ever earned one. They appear to have all the components: coaching, decent depth, a terrific QB and several intangibles. LUCK is about as intangible as it gets. Thats not a knock…luck is something you can’t quantify, yet can’t win it all without.

Steve, all I was saying is that it’s hard to hear “it was close” if the score says otherwise. I know what you’re talking about though. I saw every Hamilton, Godsey, and Suggs FSU game in person. I know about games being closer than the scoreboard indicates. But, my point was the whole play for 4 quarters thing. That’s all. GT is notorious for having three great quarters, so I can sympathize when I hear that from someone else.
