Tech must stay grounded
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
The next two games, against Samford and Troy, give Georgia Tech a chance to prepare for the ACC schedule. Tech has a lot to work on: kickoff coverage and returns, pass protection, the running game, etc.
I’d put the running game at the top of that list. I know fans spend more time talking about the passing game. You can’t ever get the ball to Calvin Johnson enough, and why don’t you throw over the middle, and to the tight ends?
But championship teams eventually have to prove they can run the ball. Tech isn’t going to win any championships with Reggie Ball as its leading rusher, as he was against Notre Dame. And Tech isn’t going to win any championships when it’s no better than 50 percent on third-and-1.

Tech isn’t going to win any kind of championship with Reggie Ball anywhere on its roster. He had a decent first half but I think I could do the same with Calvin Johnson on my side. It’s sad that Nix has no confidence in the guy to even attempt to get it to Calvin in tight coverage. But the blame has to fall on Gailey - he’s seen the same results from Ball for three years and not gotten anyone else ready to challenge him. Ball entered Tech with more ability and confidence than Joe Hamilton. He’ll leave Tech an embarassment who didn’t improve one bit in 4 years. Throwing the ball 10 yards out of bounds when your first receiver is covered without checking down to anyone else is not an improvement. It’s something a sophmore QB does. A senior should not be asked simply to not lose a game, he better be able to win them. We’ve invested 4 years in a bum. Anyone else tired of seeing him either trash talking or complaining to the nearest ref after every play?

And W Ky gave the Dawgs a chance to get ready for the SEC schedule, which hits a lot sooner than tek’s conference schedule. Tired of hearing ‘we opened with ND.’ Never mind that we play 2 more games after this one before the next SEC game. Superior is gunning for the Dawgs more than any other team. It’s always tough in Columbia.

He was complaining b/c the refs were missing holding right and left. GT needs to learn how to shake it off and go on.

Tech will never do anything with Gay Chanley as the head coach…He’s not much of a motivator considering the team has no problem getting up for the big ones but sleeps through the lil pups….It’ll be nice to see Tech lose to Duke!!

Tech is a “lil pup”. They can’t run with the big dogs. Maybe they need to just stay on the porch and whimper and whine like their QB.

I am surprised at Tech. They usually have a great running game. It would help a lot this year with Calvin. The safty would have to play closer to the line which gives Calvin less over the top coverage and more one on one. The next two games should be boring after opening with ND.

I think Reggie will put it together. ND’s defense was better than most people would have guessed. It was the first game people! First game calling plays for our “new” OC, new formations, etc. I think Reggie did an excellent job of staying in the game despite the fact that his QB coach was up in the booth for the first time in his tenure. I would like to see the trash talking disappear, but the bottom line is game play. He can talk all the trash he wants if he gets his completion percentage up and his interceptions down. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: GT football is headed in the right direction… this is a very dangerous team and running the table from here on out isn’t out of the question. Go Jackets!

Tech has three Weapons Reggie Ball (sometimes), Calvin Johnson, and John Tinutta. That can’t ever overcome a shy coach, (who plays not to lose, rather than to win) and a supporting team of mediocre players. Dave Braine should have fired Gailey three years ago. Tech will be mediocre. Until they can recruite! Braine & his buddy Gailey have put us back 10 years.

My take on people who say “HEY, U BOYS NEED TO START THROWING IT TO CALVIN MORE”, is that they are complete morons with ZERO football knowledge.
Tech lost to Notre Dame because it is very difficult to get the ground game going out of the shotgun.
2nd and 1, 3rd and 1, and Tech was screwing around with the option. Just drive that ball down there throats! Then you’ll be able to win these big games consistently.

In Mike Knobler’s column on 9/5/06, Nix was asked if there was more to his offense that he didn’t show against ND. Nix replied “We sure didn’t hold anything back. We played this one to win.” If that’s it, heaven help us. It’s going to be a long season.

GTGreg,
I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiment. It was the first game. People tend to lose sight of that fact. You Tech kids gave us all we could handle and then some. The game was poorly refereed on both sides of the coin, and coming from a die-hard ND fan, we damn sure didn’t look like the number two team in the country playing against y’all. We were quite fortunate to get out of Bobby Dodd with the W under our belt. (Albeit, a tragic win with a Heisman “candidate” at quarterback. God knows, if Quinn performs the same way this Saturday vs. Penn State, our chances of national contention will be flushed down the proverbial crapper.)
Heh. We’re the only team in the nation that can win, and still get bumped down two notches in the AP poll. Meanwhile, Texas stomps the hell out of a team that could be beaten by invalids, and blammo! Number two!
I digress…
Bottom line, apart from the whole 3 and 1 debacle (which even turned my stomach; Tech is a much better team than that) y’all gave us everything. The delayed blitzes on Quinn worked almost to perfection. Brady saw a whole lot of the Atlanta skyline the first half.
Keep your heads up, Tech. Here’s wishing y’all the best. Go out and kick a*. You know you have the tools to do it.

Hey, Tech: Yes, you did miss something. First sentence of blog topic talks about tek getting a chance to prepare for conference schedule by playing 2 candy-a* games. The Dawgs only played one before getting into their conference schedule. As for your “who cares?”, apparently a bunch of tekkies do, because they took great pleasure in pointing out the weakness of the Dawgs’ opener while the insects were playing the mighty Irish (who have fallen in the polls after such a quality win).

Nix should forget about the run these next two games. If you think running the ball against Samford and Troy will help get you ready for ACC you are mistaking. They can improve it more by going up against their 1st team D. I say Calvin has suffered enough. Let Ball air it out to him and let him have 200+ ypg and the touchdowns that he deserves,or find that 2nd receiver that you have been looking for.

Hey scooter, yeah the mighty Irish you referenced have fallen in the polls since their quality win, but they’re still ranked 8 spots higher than the bullfrawgs after taking that fall. I’ll see the “who cares” and raise a good “quit trying to start crap.” There was no mention of Uga on this blog before you showed up.
Thanks to the Irish fan for his kind wishes, for being a “hick from the sticks” he sure does write and spell better than most of the Uga folks that troll this page.

GTG: Maybe no mention on this particulary blog, but it sure provided a good opening. And ‘ranked’ is an interesting word in your response. Two D-1 teams that played in this state last Saturday are, and one isn’t. Further, those two that are ranked will pass each other going in opposite directions in the polls after this weekend (as the ‘bullfrawgs’ leap past the losing Irish). Start crap? Wouldn’t think of it.

Wait… oooooh I get it, Tech isn’t ranked. I guess you have that to hang your hat on; that and a victory over Aunt Beth’s School of Hair Care. Believe me, I’m pulling hard for PSU (since I’m studying there right now), and when the Irish do lose, I think they’ll remain above Uga in the polls (after they lose to USCEast), and PSU will jump Uga as well. After this weekend, both Tech and Uga will be 1-1, with a win over a nobody. Who will have lost to the better team? That remains to be seen.
