On the recruiting trail

With the start of summer practice two weeks away (Aug. 3), footballs are not in the air yet, but football is, and Tech’s recruiting streak makes it easier than most summers to talk about the game.

With the addition of RB Roddy Jones, DL Logan Walls and DB Willie White, Tech’s got 10 commitments, and several are very solid.

They’re far from finished. Chan Gailey said last week he anticipates signing 16-18 players in February, depending on whether players leave the program, etc.

They’re getting a little thick on DB/WR-types, but they’ll certainly make room for Camden County High DB D.J. Donley if he wants to accept their scholarship offer. He figures to make a decision this week.

Also, even though Adrian, Mich., QB Steven Threet committed a while back, they want another QB, and they’re in the running for the No. 1 QB in Georgia, Josh Nesbitt of Greensboro. He, too, may make a decision soon.

A little different to be talking so much football before practice even starts, huh?

Good times during the dry summer month of July. This class is just what the doctor ordered to change things with GT football. It shouldn’t be hard to sell GT, ACC, and downtown Atlanta… I’m glad we’re back to doing it effectively.

Matt, thanks for the great coverage of late.

if we sign another QB, won’t that mean we have 8 QBs on scholarship next season? Will that mean some will be leaving and/or moved to other positions?

That means, Spring Practice will be incredibly fun to watch next year. I would definitely expect to see QB movement.

I’m big on that kid Threet. I was watching the camp from our Super Regional baseball game and saw him throwing—He’s VERY Good and will give Nesbitt a run for his money. He had a strong arm and looked like he was very accurate. We’ll just have two different styles to choose from. Great coverage Matt! You’re probably the only writer that isn’t slanted so anti-tech at the Atlanta urinal.

Maybe we have learned the hard way. Do things early. The sooner you get good people on board others want to come. We need to get D line players, unless out new defense will be all linebackers and d backs. A defensive run and shoot.

I won’t worry about next year until we beat ND, UGA, and Miami. We’ll sort that stuff out in due time. Rather, the QBs will sort it out in various practices…

It’s still a long haul until February, but Tech is off to an uncharacteristically fast start, with what should be a high quality bunch, provided the commitments stick. Since they sometimes don’t, it’s important to keep pounding the pavement.

The state of Georgia has done a great job getting kids ready for college. We’ve come a long ways from the dirt roads these kids had to overcome in the past. Its good for Tech and its good for the state of Georgia.

Some of the hardest hits in Tech history have come from the stands. I will never forget the sight of the famous Coach Bryant having to wear a football helmet leaving the joke by the coke dodging the booze bottles. Tech has a history of this kind of behavior.

I am very excited for Tech football. I am an avid fan and would love for them to have a more-than-mediocre season this year.

That all being said, I do not have a high opinion of Gailey. I don’t think that he is head coaching material for us…. just to keep it real. His “play not to lose it” mentality is killing us and I don’t see Tech winning 10 games in any season like that.

Can you even imagine those words coming out of the mouth of any good head coach (Bobby Bowden, for example)? A head coach must have confidence and speak highly of the players and team. Saying something like, “I know that we su@k so we just go on the field and try not to let them kill us too badly. Maybe if we are lucky we can go to another lower tiered bowl.” just doesn’t cut it.

The head coach above all HAS to BELIEVE that they CAN win EVERY game!!!!

Robert, I see where you are coming from with the seven win seasons, but Chan has never said anything even remotely similar to “I know that we suck so we just go on the field and try to not let them kill us too badly.” This will be the first year that Chan is sitting back, treating the HC position like the exectutive job that it is, and delegating responsibility. Chan DOES believe that he can win every game. The statements you are referencing were made by Dave Braine, and even those have been blown out of proportion. If you have ever played football before, and your coach didn’t preach solid, fundamental, mistake free football (i.e. not shooting yourself in the foot, playing not to lose etc.) then I can’t fancy your team was any good. Hop off of the “fire chanwagon” for a second, look objectively at the kids being brought into the program, and then tell me who your criticism is helping.

By Kevin

Tell me something, if Gailey sucks, why is it that GT goes to bowls (albeit less than memorable ones) every year even though he has what is ranked as a bottom of the barrel recruiting class every year?

The real truth is that Gailey is an OVERACHIEVER. If he were able to get the same play out of his team every week that he gets against Miami and Auburn, he would not only be an amazing cocah, but a god! Imagine going undefeated but only while doing it with the 51st best recruiting classes.

I get frustrated too, but knocking on Gailey isn’t the right thing to do.

By buzztheirazz

Cheers to you Kevin. Someone that sees the truth! After losing a group of players to grades, being depleted by injuries and not having the 4/5 star recruits you have to wonder how we’ve even continued to go bowling!? Because Chan & Tenuta have done a fabulous job with what they’ve got. If we can get a few strong recruiting classes….you’d better bet that we’d be top tier in the ACC. We’re beginning to build a very strong foundation for the future and the guys that are coming in now are QUALITY!!! C’mon down Claytor, Nesbitt, Donley, Everson, Monroe, McRay, Dwyer and get ready to play for some ACC Championships!!

Greg and Kevin….

I realise that anyone that complains or even suggests anything is wrong with their program gets dumped on. Some feel like “fans” should be cheerleaders and clap for whatever happens and whomever does it - no matter what.

I, on the other hand, evaluate was has been going on and IMHO, it seems that Tech is not a fit for Chan. What does my comment accomplish? Well, this is a blog where individuals express opinion, and that is what I am doing.

Let’s look at what has happened during Chan’s term. First, the bad: poor recruiting (until he got this one recruiting guy recently), poor offense (and Chan has been doing this, himself), average seasons, below par bowl games, embarrassing losses (ie - Duke). Now, the good: great defense (thanks Tenuto), random big wins (ie - Auburn).

In spite of the lopsided good vs. bad, the main thing that angers me is the extreme conservative play calling on offense. Every one in the stadium can basically predict the offensive play that will be called. I can count on one hand how many times we threw over the middle last year - ya think that our opponents have figured this out yet????

And, God forbid, if Tech ever gets a slim lead - Chan goes completely ground game and mostly up the middle. I know that we have good running backs, but come on - you HAVE to keep the defense honest, at least.

Chan’s “philosophy” of “playing to not lose the game” is what he, himself, has admitted to. And, if you read the AJC interview, our “new” offensive coordinator stated that he will adopt the same philosophy. Again, I repeat myself from my first post - can you even imagine Bobby Bowden saying that much less calling plays like that? FSU wins because they take risks and they NEVER stop playing (ie - going conservative on offensive play calling). Too many things can happen in college football to sit on a 3 point lead. FSU will regularly fake punts, go on 4th down and short, and do whatever it takes to put points on the board. Don’t you wish Tech would do that?

I hope that I have explained myself. I am a BIG Tech fan and I do hope that Tech wins every game. However, I still have my opinion….. I guess time will tell.

By Robert

July 19, 2006 10:10 PM | Link to this

One last thing…

And, if it is true that school coaches monitor these blogs (as Richt suggests), I hope that the Tech coaches read my posting and change some things.

I had season tickets last year. Throughout each game, I yelled out loud the offensive play call BEFORE Tech ran it. I was right around 75% of the time. If I can do this, what would the opposing coaches do?

The people sitting around me thought I was some mind reader, but soon even they realized that predicting the Tech offensive plays was rather simple.

By Davey

July 19, 2006 10:47 PM | Link to this

So Robert u actually was just sitting in the stands and would yell the play that u thought was comin???? Did the people around u think u had a mental disability??? Also u were 75% on calling them. If your that good why don’t u think about becoming a D cordinator?

Also Mark Ritch i actually (gulp) believe it is u and i also hope that our staff do the same thing (i doupt seriously that Chan can even use a computer tho, jk). Greg u can’t even realize when people are making fun of u can u??? woolfwoolf was making fun of u and u thought he was on your side. WAY TO GO GREG!!!! NOT ONLY DOES ALL TECH FANS HATE U BUT NOW THE GEORGIA FOOTBALL PROGRAM HATES U.

What’s the real message here in this early recruiting? Panick? Or a lack of DB’s and Wr’s after this year? Or is it the current QB’s are going to learn what Bilbo learned? Until we get some dominating lineman and backers and FB’s in it will still mean mediocrity Gailey style.

Does Giff Smith the new star recruiter who went to Pebblebrook and Ga Southern know GT history in recruiting particularly the era’s of Pepper Rodgers, Bill Lewis and Gailey’s first two or so years? That history is Georgia recruits many times can’t handle the academics. Bill Lewis recruited Ga. excellent having the Bulldawg background. The problem is 28 recruits were lost to attrition one way or another. It was almost immpossible for him to win at Tech with these losses. Look at academic side to Giff, because it does us no good if these guys stay in two years and flunk out.

“Surfrider”…

You are right that Tech has to go after student athletes who will be able to stick around. I would say, however, that many of the best are now leaving after their Junior years at all Universities, so many recruiters are now looking at a three year window for the best.

While Ga Tech does not have the “crip” courses that most football factories have, Tech does have excellent facilities and some of the world’s best tutors for all of the student athletes who spend more time working (and believe me, training is a full time job)than most students.

Tech is going after those who they believe can thrive academically, athletically, and most importantly, as people. With limited scholarships and stiff competition, Tech can be selective in those they recruit.

Hats off to the recruiting team that is articulating the right story to the right student athletes…I mean those athletes who have as much confidence in all of their abilities rather than been considered only a piece of beef to be exploited by those football factories. These prospects will be better prepared to what faces them on, and off, the field, and recognize that Ga Tech has the faith in them to succeed.

REPOST!!!!!!!

By Joseph

July 20, 2006 02:10 PM | Link to this

FYI, commitments from high school kids do not mean anything at this point. Everything is a verbal. Correct, GT does has 11 commitments at this point and most of them are 3 stars at best. GT competes with UNC, Maryland, Kentucky and other horrible football schools for recruits. Don’t get too excited Jackets, I foresee another 7-5 or 6-6 season in your near future. Aurburn could have any of these recruits if they really wanted them. Go Tigers.

By George P. Burdell

July 20, 2006 03:17 PM | Link to this

Joseph, funny how our recruits manhandled your overrated Tigers. In both cases, it wasn’t even like it was a fluke play here or there. You got trounced from start to finish. When exactly do you think Auburn will be scheduling another home and home with Tech? We both know it won’t be anytime soon. You’d be better off sticking to the LA Monroes and the other cupcakes you play every year because anytime you play a halfway decent out of conference opponent, you have to start dreaming of next year.

You are correct that they are soft commits at this time. Given the recent allegations against your fine school, how likely is it that a bunch of your prospects will be heading to other schools in the South. Just the hint of probation will send em scurrying. Unless of course they assumed from your recent past that they were likely to be on probation at some time during their career anyway.

Don’t get me wrong, I like Auburn just fine, I just don’t like you and your idiotic statements.

By Joseph

July 20, 2006 03:32 PM | Link to this

Senor Burdell, Yes, we know. The Jackets beat Auburn last year, it’s all you nerds can talk about. Don’t act like Tech didn’t fall asleep in a few games last year (VT, NC State, Virginia, UGA, Utah). Auburn was not ready to play Tech last year, we figured it would be another route and didn’t show up.

My point was that you nerds are so high on your recruiting class. You would take quantity over quality. Every 4+ star from Georgia will end up at UGA or Auburn. GT should be happy to have the 11 recruits, but those are not highly sought after players. Just don’t get your hopes up.

You heard it here first, 6-6 season. Tech will lose to Notre Dame, Virginia, VT, Clemson, Miami and UGA.

For what it’s worth, greg is a plague on the UGA blog too. We were hoping the blog police would send him a virus, but no luck. Good luck with your season.

Jacoby monroe, Logan Walls, ROddy Jones, Willie White, Joseph Gilbert (GA’s AAA heavyweight champion wrestler) among other BIG talents!!!!!

Wow. The program’s recruting is on a MAJOR upswing. Look for Tech to reverse its fortunes sooner rather than later, in the uga series and in the ACC.

We’d love for Caleb King to come, but it doesn’t look like his grades are good enough (someone mentioned his name in one of OUR blogs). We’ll go forward with Roddy. No worries, man!

By Get Real

July 20, 2006 04:39 PM | Link to this

Caleb King would not even consider Tech, even if his grades were good enough. Remember, Tech get’s the second rate guys from Georgia High Schools.

Example, UGA got Kregg Lumpkin (4 star RB) while Tech got Reggie Ball (2 star QB) from the same graduating class at Stephenson High. Although Lumpkin has been injury plagued his whole career, he was obviously the best player from that high school. He should have a break out year this year spelling Brown. Meanwhile, Reggie Ball has been a star at Tech but he wouldn’t have played a down at UGA. You just have to face the fact that Tech gets second rate talent in recruiting.

buzztheirazz could comment man, one thing though is that we have more 3 stars then them and about to get another 4 star this weekend by the Name of DJ Donley. Also Nesbitt is going to commit real soon so we could easily wind up with 5 4star players by the begining of the season.

Get Real:

Although u r right about Kregg Lumpkin bieng better then Reggie Ball i must comment that reggie was a 3 star QB which isn’t that bad IMO. Go actually look up your info before u state things. Also you want to talk about another player that came out stone mtn was Marcus Ball neither Georgia or GT get him your whole school connetion thing doesn’t work.

Gentlemen,

(and I didn’t get to see the Richt comments as I was away all week. However, based on your posts, I can imagine he continued to display the ‘class’ he possesses…..(I wonder if he can lead a course on this for some of the Dawg bloggers who continue to ruin the blogs….))

This is a great class that Chan is putting together. Finally! You have to love comments from people like Joseph who try all they can to discredit what’s going on at Tech this recruiting season. I guess I can see his point of our recruits aren’t highly sought after. I mean afterall, I can see why a lot of schools wouldn’t seek a defensive tackle that squat 750 pounds. Good point, Joseph. Joseph, you just seem to get it. Nobody was sitting here talking about beating Auburn last year until you showed up with your attitude that Tech doesn’t even belong in the same sentence with Auburn. If Auburn didn’t show up for our game, then it serves them right. I don’t think that happened because all the talk leading up to that game was that it was payback time for what happened in Atlanta in 2004.

Go ahead and live in your little bubble if you like and put Tech on the same level as Kentucky, Wake or whoever. Hope your illusions help you sleep at night. And yes it does make me feel good to know that we whipped you the last two times especially since you guys already had those wins notched on your belt. It is much more satisfying to beat a school when their fans have the attitude you do that your team doesn’t even belong on the field. Thank you for that and enjoy the satisfaction you get from beating Buffalo and whichever pathetic school from Lousiana you choose to pay off this year. We’ll enjoy our time in the sun playing yet another quality out of conference opponent.

Good point George P. Burdell, I think that Tech does belong on the same level as Kentucky, Wake and LA Tech. I think if you guys played those teams every year you would probably split the series.

You nerds just keep stealing these stellar recruits from Middle Tennessee and Georgia Southern and we’ll see how it shakes out next January when recruiting numbers start coming out. I see another top 65 recruiting class shaping up.
The only reason you got Jacoby Monroe is because Geis’s son is his head football coach. I like “Most Wanted’s” comment, his picture looks like a mug shot. I’m sure Monroe has made worse decisions in his life (like shaving lines in his eyebrows) but his decision to go to Tech is going to haunt him for a while.

Hey, Blog Police, it is time to get Greg off this blog if you haven’t already done so.

For the Tech fans, Greg is not welcome on the Georgia blog. As Sundawg said, many of us suspect he is gadfly who was posting on the Georgia blog as a Florida fan. I suspect he was banned by AJC and has now resurfaced using another name.

It is past time for the Blog Police to get rid of him. He is nothing but a rude irritant to everybody and I do not believe he is a Georgia fan.

Incidentally, the Georgia blog has been shut down for some time, so there may be more of us on here than usual. There are more Georgia fans who support Tech when you aren’t playing Georgia than you think. I don’t criticize Tech. I do take issue with Tech fans ripping their team and their quarterback. There is way too much of that.

Hey Joseph, Tech could quit recruiting right now and IF they signed all the recruits that they have verbals from then they would have a class in the top 35. But, check this out, there will be more four stars in the near future. Uh-oh, Tech might very well have a class in the top 20. Wow, just think what they might could do with a class like that if they were able to beat Auburn twice with bad recruits and they gave UGA all they could handle last year. Sorry you can’t handle the truth, but Tech’s recruiting class is a great one. Afterall, look how many national championships have been won by AU and UGA over the last five years when they have had awesome recruiting classes. ZERO! So Joseph, why do you care about Tech’s recruiting class. I believe deep down you are just burning with jealousy. God I love it. I love to see someone from some other team start taking shots at Tech. It means that Tech is doing something right. Too bad you can’t be like reality check or some of the other gracious dawg fans on here. They have class. You, on the other hand, have none.

Joseph is a typical Auburn fan much in the same way that “greg” is a typical Georgia fan: relative oddities trying to get some attention on another blog because of the scorn their own school’s fan bases have set on them. I harbor no ill will toward their schools or most of their fans, and just ignore the inflammatory posts since they have no idea what they’re talking about.

That said, Monroe is a hoss. I wish I could squat 800 pounds or whatever huge number it is. Let’s go Jackets! Keep the ball rolling!

Sundawg and reality check are the kind of posters that would be welcome on any blog. I check out the UGA blog as well and most of the posters are reasonable and make very good points. I feel for you guys having to put up with the likes of greg and Bulldawg, but as Sundawg pointed out, it is easy enough to scroll past their mindless chatter. Hope you guys continue to chime in with your thoughts as the season nears and I hope you have some other outlets that have not been invaded by the bad apples.

Joseph, you are ridiculous. We did play Wake every year until the conference expanded. Why don’t you go check out that series record before you make such idiotic statements. We have only played on school from Lousiana ( the big one, not any of your little buyoff schools) and if you look it up I think you’ll find Tech has done just fine against them as well. Kentucky is probably not even worth mentioning because it has been a long, long time since we played them, but I think you will find our record is just fine against them as well.

By Joseph

Look, last year you nerds had the 49th best recruiting class and finished out of the top 25. Auburn had a top 10 recruiting class and finished 14th (we were 7th before the bowl loss). All I am saying is that Tech typically does horrible in recruiting and I don’t think this year is any different. You off to a good (quantity wise) start, but just like last year you will probably have one 4-Star recruit and the rest will be a bunch of nobody’s. Just don’t get your hopes up, these high school kids haven’t even played their senior seasons and you are already so hyped about how good they are. I foresee a #45 recruiting class and a 6-6 season for the Georgia Tech Flag Boys.

By GTGreg

July 21, 2006 01:23 PM | Link to this

I guess we’ll just agree to disagree on the recruiting class quality. I don’t know what you’re basing your talent assessments on though… the fact that they didn’t pick Auburn? We had the 49th best recruiting class, finished just outside of the top 25, and beat your sorry team up and down the field. And your “they didn’t care about it” excuse doesn’t hold water. If your team was asleep before the season opener against a team that whooped them the last time they met, then I think they should be taking directed study classes in motivation instead of sociology. Just my .02.

greg….i’m a georgia alum and a huge supporter of the bulldogs, and i don’t hesitate when i say that the bulldog nation would be better off without fans such as yourself. you don’t show any respect for others, you have no class, and you throw out stupid comments that make you look, well, stupid. it wouldn’t bother me if you were just making yourself look stupid, but by claiming to be a georiga fan you portray georiga fans in general in a bad light. have you ever attended a class at uga - better yet, have you ever set foot on georgia’s campus? if you are really a uga fan, you would just keep your mouth shut b/c all your doing is hurting your own cause.

Tech fans…congrats on the recent success in recruiting. i do have a question though. what is the cause in the drastic improvement in recruiting from the years past? what has changed? also, i gotta say that one thing that i admire about the tech football program is that they consistently go out and schedule legitimate non-conference games (i.e. auburn, notre dame). i would like to see more of that at uga. i know that many say uga can’t schedule tuff out of conference games b/c the conference schedule is tuff enough, but it would be fun to see georgia hit the field against a big out of conference foe (i don’t think colorado fits the bill). good luck tech fans - see ya in athens around turkey day.

Law Dawg—the reason for our recruiting success was because we have a new recruiting coordinator and recruiters. Giff Smith and Geoff Collins are the two that have gotten the most talk. From the talk on the msg. boards of the recruiting sites there is no comparison. It seriously went from night to day. So, that being said the next 4 to 5 years of GT football should improve and we should become more consistent.

By Recruiting Guru

Law Dawg- Our recent success in recruiting is due to the fact that we will take anyone. As long as you are on a high school football team you can play for Tech. As you know, there are no stars over Atlanta. Auburn and UGA can keep going after the high school athletes that are actually rated.

Congrats on the recruites Tech! I hate the closeness of the games but let’s be honest, it’s good for the rivalry and to get the nation wide attention that I feel our game doesn’t get. With more star players and nail chewed off games, our rivaly will be more mentioned with the Al/Aub, Mich/Oh. St., and Fl/Mia.

Tech has 11 commitments, outstanding. According to ESPN.com the average rating of Tech’s 11 recruits is 61.6

On the other hand, the average rating of UGA’s 11 recruits is 74.9

Don’t get too excited about this class Techies, you only have 6 more scholarships to offer.

Reality, The problem with your UGA comparison….

UGA really does ALWAYS recruit well. However, they rarely are able to use the talent on the field. As I recall from previous “recuiting classes” of UGA, many of those players never become eligible to play college ball.

Plus, the ones that do become eligible never seem to produce at UGA. You cannot win by recruiting, alone.

LAWDAWG and SUNDAWG, thanks for your class and comments.

We have a problem with play calling. Maybe it was inexperience, but we always ran to the right nothing to the leftexcept for a pass. It does not take too long to figure out what would happen.

Coach came from a pro team. Mistakes have been made but its appears the right people are on board now. Remember with the losses of players due to failing to make grades we lost what amount to an entire recuriting glass. Let us see any school that could survive such a loss, even the mutt heads could not do so.

I know this seems long ago to you, but I’m old enough to remember when Tech beat Coach Butts seemingly every year…until Vince came along! With these good early commits…you never know when this series will change.

Also, I wonder what you call the GA/FL series? Is that a true rivalry? What do they think of you?

LAW DOG it was said by a person that works at tech that Werder (former recruiting cordinator) couldn’t recruit him to go to the bath room.

Also what is all this garbage about espn. Honestly i think espn has much other things to worry about then recruiting. I would rather trust the judgement of a website soley based on recruiting imo. Secoundly when did anyone on this blog (tech fans) state that tech recruiting is better then georgia. I my self am just excited that all these guys are commiting.

ALSO JOSEPH where the hell r u getting this knowledge that tech is only going to ge one 4 star. They all ready going to get 3 4 stars and most likely 4 past the weekend. If your basing your opoinion on what tech has done in the past then your one dumb guy. Tech has a brand new recuruiting cord. and he is kicking but.

DJ DONLEY IS A JACKET. HE IS THE 4TH 4 STAR COMMITMENT AND IS THE #13 IN THE NATION AS SAFETY. HE ALSO PLAYS WR AND IS THE SECOUND BEST IN THE STATE IN THAT POSITION. This also will give tech the nuber 2 and 3(willie white) at wr. Also in other news Casey Mathews has narrowed his choices of 2 between tech and oregon. Mathews is a 3 star lb and son of the great Clay Mathews. He would be another big pickup for the jackets.
