What do you think of Cremins’ new job?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Former Tech coach Bobby Cremins, who has not coached since the 2000 season, has agreed in principle to become the next head coach at the College of Charleston. What do you think of the news? How will he do at this new position?

Bobby Cremins will succeed whereever he goes. Not only in wins and losses, but in bringing integrity to the program and having a positive inpact on the lives of his players. The ‘x’s and ‘o’s are only a part of the package. His players love him and he stays an important part of their lives. That’s the real measure of success in a coach. Any program is lucky to have him and the players even luckier. I only wish the short-sighted idiots at my alma mater hadn’t been so stupid as to esort him out the door after the best 19 years our basketball program will ever see.

I think it’s great, and he will do well, on and off the court with his players. I wish he was back at Ga. Tech.

i think that this is a wonderful opportunity to show how good of a coach he really is. he is basically going to be building a program from scratch, i am excited to see what the program will be like in the next 2-5 yrs (or how ever long is contract is)

Bobby Cremins will do a great job at C of C. Not only will he win games, but he will be great for his players. He is concerned with how they do in life, along with what they can do on the court. A unique and refreshing individual. My favorite coach in 43 years of follwing Georgia Tech athletics. No offense to our current coach, but the administration made a mistake in forcing him out.

I don’t give a darn what Cremmins does. I hope he has learned a good play to bring the ball in bounds, we sucked at that. I also wonder where he will recruit since the New York AAU coaches and high school coaches closed the doors to him? He always went for the one big name recruit and he won’t get that at COC unless they offer big cash. And I do mean a lot more money than Stephon M and Kenny A may have got to come to Tech? I don’t know the acedemics at COC but maybe he can pull a Jim Harrick down there and get some of those “iffy” players in school. He is great guy. He was a great recruiter until he burned down the New York “Subway”. He is a very marginal coach….at times I thought Tech should have charged him for a ticket.

It’s gonna be great to watch Georgia State kick his butt in his first game at Charleston. You’re golfing buddy Reinhart doesn’t coach there anymore, Bobby!

I suppose things will work out at Charleston the same way they did at Tech. If Cremins can recruit players enough players who are a notch above his competition, he’ll win on talent. If he can’t, he’ll lose big time. At one time he was a great recruiter, as far as X’s and O’s go, he’s a complete dolt.

Cremins will be as good as the assitants he can bring in. He looked like a great coach when he had Perry Clark as an assistant but once he left and Kevin Cantwell became his top assistant, things went down. Tech messed up by letting Cremins come back from his week at South Carolina. After that, other teams recruiting against Cremins used that against him. Once he started losing players to the NBA early, his seven player system didn’t work anymore either. It will be tough for him to adapt to the game today having to play nine or ten guys with no super star to stick around for four years. I wish him well and hope he is lucky enough to get two great assistant coaches to help him.

What else could CofC do besides go with Bobby? It will be fun but the “big-time” recruits won’t be going to Cof C regardless of who they got. Why the cold feet for Marshall? - must be some unseen hurdles in place. Have fun Bobby!

Good opportunity for Cremins and Charleston. Unfortunately he was a casualty along with others of the post Rice chage at Tech. If he could recruit at Tech he surely should be able to at CC. Also I’m sure he has learned from any changes in the game since his waning days (not relying on one star recruit that may go pro early or before college). I was kind of hoping for a return to the good ole days at Tech with the return of Cremins or one of his subordinates along with the return of a Ross/O’leary protege. This year’s Hewitt class is what spoiled us under Cremins every year there were star recruits coming in starting with Price, Salley, and Dalrymple early on.

Go Bobby! C of C is now my second favorite college team. I think that having some time away from he game was good for him and that he will adapt to the new situation very well. I’ll never forget the excitement that coach Cremins brought to GT in the mid-eighties. By the way, the poster who equated GT’s downfall in the mid to late 1990’s with Coach Kevin Cantwell’s replacement of Perry Clark has nnever met Coach Cantwell or watched him work. He knows basketball and is a tireless worker! GT’s decline resulted from the NBA’s decision to take ever younger talented players that Bobby would have recruited back in the day.

Good signing by Charleston. He is not as good as Marshall, who they almost got, but he will do fine there. The question is, how will he do without his annual blue chip superstar he was so good at recruiting while at Tech. He won’t be able to land those big prospects at Charleston.

This is a good fit for Coach. He probably will recruit better here than at Tech … the academics will not hinder him in this area.
CofC already had/has a good program … I think he’ll do well and I wish him well. Bobby Cremins made Tech basketball a player in Div.1 and for that this fan will be watching and rooting for him and his team.

Bobby will be living in Charleston close to the Atlantic and wonderful golf links. O’Leary works on a beautiful capus at Central Florida and living a good life not far from both east and west coast beaches. GT is still on North Ave right off I75/85 in dirty downtown Atlanta. There is justice in the world.

You ran Bobby Cremins out of town on a rail as everyone above already told you.
Then, you named your gym court for him.
That makes about as much sense as naming your football stadium for a college dropout from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville who never not once beat Vince Dooley, but lost every time to him instead.
John Salley is the only black men’s basketball player that Bobby Cremins ever recruited to Tech who actually graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology, so his recruits at that itty-bitty school will do as well in college there as they did here for him, if he gets the job.
The Athletics Department at Tech has just been on one long hard poor run, not only not winning 21 of the 22 sports (Women’s Tennis) against UGA, but I must add that the AJ-C tried to shield you from the knowledge of just how badly the AD at Tech is in besides being On Probation for the next two years when it reported that UGA is Number 9 this season now over in AD Rankings **because Tech is Number 50.

Georgia Tech fans on StingTalk.com are trying to determine, arguing amongst themselves, if this is MEDIOCRE or not for Coach Chan Gailey to have Lost 22 games in his 1st four seasons at Georgia Tech, admitting that his recruiting has averaged Number 49 for 2006, Number 48 for 2005, Number 35 for 2004, Number 34 for 2003, and Number 51 for 2002 – an average recruiting ranking by Scout.com for Chandler Gailey of Number 43 to Number 6 for Coach Richt who has never lost to Chandler Gailey as a direct result thereof :

55 Better 1-A Football Programs than the Georgia Institute of Technology in the 4-year career of the Chandler Gailey Era to-date :
http://football.stassen.com/cgi-bin/records/calc-wp.pl?start=2002&end=2005&rpct=1&min=1&se=on&pt=on&by=Losses
Number 49 in recruiting 2006 according to Scout.com where UGA is 60 miles from downtown Atlanta but is Number 4 in the Nation anyway.
http://scout.scout.com/a.z?s=135&p=9&c=14&yr=2006
Mr. John H. Davis, former Georgia Tech offensive tackle football player, states that this is not mediocre but instead ”better than average” to find :
(1) 55 football programs better than Tech in not losing football games, not one of whom is On Probation like Tech is for the next entire two (2) full seasons in the Chandler Gailey Era at Tech. (2) 48 football programs better than Tech in recruiting, not one of whom is On Probation like Tech is for the next entire two (2) full seasons in this non-mediocre Chandler Gailey Era at Tech.
That would be only voodoo mathematics Mr. John H. Davis to state that there are 50-55 better football programs than Georgia Tech who are not On Probation as Tech in fact is the next entire two (2) full seasons, and surmise with excuses that Tech hasn’t recruited well in a city of five million in a state that produces the 4th most high school football recruits who go on to the NFL as you, that Tech is not mediocre – when it sure as hell is.
Tech is middling, run of the mill, second-rate, pedestrian, worse than modest, poor in quality, substandard, poor, below standard, unsatisfactory, undistinguished, mundane, and unremarkable.
And, what is more Mr. John H. Davis, sir, I find that understandable that you would defend Chandler Gailey when what Tech did when on the teams you played on at Georgia Tech from 1983 to 1986 when you played at Tech was 23 Losses then to the only 22 Chandler Gailey has posted as Losses in his 1st four seasons on the Flats.
Since, then, it would make you out to be a mealy-mouthed two-faced Internet Bravado now to say that Chandler Gailey is mediocre when in fact, you lost more games at Tech yourself Mr. John H. Davis.

BuLLdawg,
Don’t you have anything better to do than to talk trash about football on a blog about Bobby Cremins? Whoooo! UGA’s great! I’ve heard it forever. Go back to your echo chamber on their blogs.
Yes, Chan Gailey is horrible. No, we don’t need to hear it from you.
As far as Bobby goes, it didn’t seem to me that he was run out of town on a rail. Considering how many games the team was winning, I was glad that he was given the opportunity to retire. At the same time, I’m very happy for him and hope that things go well at CofC.

The times changed on Bobby and he couldn’t keep his players out of the pros like Duke always seems to do. The new rule of one year in college should help a little and the lower academic entry should help. He won in the Southern before and I bet he wins again. His players to a man loved the guy which isn’t always the case. His mentor came to USC with some of the same background and age and did better than good. C of C is not that bad a place like Georgia State was when Lefty went there. This place has some history of success and some class as a school. Good luck Bobby.

Bobby Cremins was not run out of town on a rail by Tech. Bobby decided it was time for him to move on because he did not feel like he was helping the program any longer.
That shows the class and integrity of a man and Cremins will always be right at the top of the list as far as I am concerned. I will always remember seeing him jogging on campus and taking the time to wave and say hello to everyone that recognized him, which was everyone thanks to the white hair and unmistakable accent.
I am very glad that Tech has such a fine man in its history of coaches and I wish him nothing but success at College of Charleston. I am grateful we now have a fine coach in Paul Hewitt, but any success he has in the program is built on the foundation Cremins made.

Regarding the Cremins hire…….
Don’t care what anyone else has to say…. I graduated from the Institute in 1981 when basketball was as low as it could go (do you folks remember Brooke Steppe and the Wayne Morrison offense?)……Cremins is the ‘godfather’ who started Tech basketball on the path they are on!!
I wish the best of luck to “Coach” and will be added to the group that considers C of C as their “second team”!!!!
Don’t care what Bulldawg and the rest have to say!! ‘Coach’ has class and brought a distinctive style to the Jackets. He’ll forever be remembered as the guy who returned us to a basketball force! (don’t waste your blogs attacking this line…I won’t be responding).
In the end, the ‘switch’ between USC and Tech will remain the topic hit with regard to Cremins. What I will always remember is a guy who ‘lived’ Tech b-ball and wanted the best for Tech. (and kudos to Hewitt on how he handled the naming ceremony…..another class act!!)
The memories of Coach Cremins are indelible and won’t be easily erased….remember the ‘thin Gold Line’…..Scott Petway….Josef…John Salley…Bruce Dalrymple… Dennis Scott….??
C of C…best of luck to you. We’ll keep Paul Hewitt and be proud of our guys!!… Enough ‘ramblin’….. I expect to see the best PG in NYC heading to Charleston soon…that’s the kind of guy you got!!
Later!@

These Tech fans don’t want to talk about football on a blog about a basketball coach. Since we don’t have any other sports in Athens that is what we need to always talk about. Screw those sissy sports. Good to see that you learned how to type in all caps. Makes us UGA fans look smart. This is a great move by Cremmins! Great for CofC, great for Cremmins, great for all young players he comes in contact with, great for coastal GA-Carolina basketball, great for college basketball PERIOD.
I hesitate to have this blog inserted with so much trash, but Cremmin’s enthusiasm and personality and drive and loyalties and, yes, boyish impulsiveness; all have to be acknowledged with heartfelt appreciation by all sports lovers in all the southeastern states. While we’re at it: Georgia, Alabama, Florida and the Carolinas have enjoyed a rich heritage of both BB and FB coaching over the years. Proud of them all. Proud to be Southern.

Returning to the State of South Carolina to coach has stuck in Cremins’ craw ever since his aborted hiring at the University of South Carolina in ‘93. It cast a pall over his status at Georgia Tech, and of his remaining seven years, he had only one successful season at The Flats. The lesson to us all: When you make a career decision, stick to it.
