Duke will bring out fire
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Alexander Memorial hasn’t exactly been a hotbed of enthusiasm this season. But that could change tonight.
Driving by the Thrillerdome en route to the news conference for Dan Radakovich, I saw fans milling outside in the pouring rain. There even appeared to be a guy trying to drum up enthusiasm with a bullhorn.
Of course, it’s easy for Tech fans to work up a lather when Duke hits town. I’m looking forward to the insults the students have in store for that most hated of Devils, J.J. Redick.
OK, in between the news conference and the game I’ve got to go to my daughter’s ballet recital. See you tonight at the game.
Matt

First part of game=fun.
Last part=not fun.
Watching the rat get a T=really fun!
What happens to our team? Cannot shoot late, cannot inbound late, cannot look like a good team late…

I guess the games are about 10 minutes too long. But they have to keep their heads up because Saturday’s game will be to stay out of last place.

As you recall, Duke was down by 9 and playing terrible D when “the rat” asked for a T at the start of the second half (he knew as well as anyone that Redicjk wasn’t fouled on the play preceding the T).
It was intended to motivate and it was successsful. Glad you found it as entertaining as I did.

I for once would like to see Hewitt stand up for his guys and confront the refs when there is a bad call against them. He needs to do this even if it means getting a T. During the last five minutes, I saw two bad calls, one against Smith and one against Bell. Both players came up questioning the call. What did Hewitt do? Nothing. Complaining during press conferences does nothing. Coach Hewitt you need to show your displeasure during the game. It works for Coach K.

old Tech Fan (in NC), the other I would add to the first 30 minutes:
watching Dick V not being able to cheer lead for the first 2/3’rds of the game = really fun

GAP: Bad calls? If anything, Duke got hosed on some calls! I still find it funny that whenever Tech chokes a big lead and loses a heartbreaker it’s ALWAYS the officials fault. Just face the facts: Tech stinks something awful this year, next year may be different, but right now, Tech is horrible…can’t hit shots, can’t rebound, terrible passes. All these equal to Tech losing on their own…not the officials losing you the game!

BrewerfaninATL: I recommend that you go back and read my comment again. I did not say that Tech lost because of bad calls. The refs make bad calls all over the place. What I said was that one there is one bad call, Hewitt needs to get on the refs face to show the team that he agrees with them and energize them. Just like Coach K did.

GAP: Okay, sorry for the accusation, but I just thought you were headed in that direction, my bad! Anyways, in reference to Hewitt, I just don’t see Hewitt ever really getting in the refs’ faces…it’s just not him and I don’t know if it would do much good for the team. A “T” would be given and 2 free throws could be the difference in the game. Emotion can only go so far. Have patience, Techies, you’re a very young team, you’re getting your lunches handed to you this year because you’re young, but you’ll be back soon!

Different Opponent, same results:
No playmaker at crunchtime to create easy buckets for others or crunch time buckets and a sudden lack of rebounds at the end…amounted to another long stretch with little or no scoring…all while the opposition is getting baskets.
I thought the officials did a pretty good job this time. They missed some calls for both sides, but my point is at least they let the guys play…unlike in UNC and there were like a million whistles.
OK clock winding down…we critically need points…Zam brings up the ball (slowly)…everyone sort of is just standing around at the three point line………..what play are we running?…where are the cutters/picks to break someone open for a shot?…was it a clear out?…why did every play down the stretch look like that I just described…………..or alternately…we PICK UP OUR DRIBBLE high on the perimeter, hand it to a big guy…big guy dribbles or tries to pass from a spot where the PG should be PLAYMAKING and low and behold…we turn the ball over………..OR the last other thing I saw pretty constant towards the end was Duke jumping in our passing lanes and fronting us….but yet with this overplaying us we didn’t beat them off the dribble or lob over the frontage.
And we still look HORIBBLE with just simple things like inbounding the ball.
I don’t think youth is our main problem guys. Did you see their fresh pg putting pressure on the ball every chance he got…full court or half court he knows to put pressure on the ball…our guys only seem to really do that if (i) it’s a superstud to guard like JJ (which we covered him up well) or (ii) if we are so far behind it’s basially too late to start.
They had to know we were a somewhat easy opponent, yet they came out playing tough D…that is how you win…you get SMART possessions on offense like it’s your last…and you play in your face defense the WHOLE game…not just after your loosing badly.
Overall…I thought we did pretty well…just need to solve that tricky thing of inbounding the ball and running an offense…ok maybe those are really basic things but they look like major challenges for our guys this year.
And for the love of all things Holy…….when the big men have the ball at the top of the key or outside three point line or half court…GUARDS PLEASE COME BACK to help.

Last night was a good game, with that first half and the first half @ N.C. recently things are really looking good once Ga Tech adds a true point guard. The #3 pt guard in the nation and the #2 small forward will be in Atlanta next year. Next year well smear UGA, and beat Duke because there loosing Reddick and their center. For the next 3 years at least Ga Tech will be a top 15 team……….GO JACKETS**

I said this after the N.C. game, Tech just finds a way to give up the lead. When Tech gets a lead on a team, usually its a blessing. This year, its a curse. Through their 8 game skid, we saw the exact same thing they showed last night. I was hoping they would pull it out, but knew they wouldn’t cause they haven’t done something like that all season long. Don’t be suprised if they get a lead against W.F. or Clemson and throw those games away too. But on the positive side, football season is only around 6 months away.

Speaking of Football…
Who’s brilliant idea was it to schedule Miami (always good and ready for a revenge game against us) for HOMECOMING?
Doesn’t everyone who’s every lived know your suppose to schedule homecoming for a cup cake game so the festivities aren’t rained on by getting stomped on the field?

For all that went wrong at the end (again), Mario West, with help from the rest of the team, did one heck of a job on Redick - like nobody else has this year. He was off balance & out of sync almost all night and shot 5 for 21, w/a couple of the makes after Mario cramped up. The kid played his guts out - too bad it wasn’t enough.
