Shutting down Williams the key?

The more I think about it, which is probably a dangerous thing to do, the more I wonder if the key to Tech competing with Duke Wednesday night is really slowing down J.J. Redick.

The guy’s proven over and over he’s going to get his. I’m not suggesting the Jackets let him, but for the effort required to sufficiently slow him, plus the fact that no matter how good the defense is he’s going to get to the free throw line, maybe Shelden Williams deserves equally special attention or more.

He’s very, very good himself, obviously, but not as consistent as Redick. Some suggest that Williams’ mood on a given day determines to a great extent how well he plays.

Beyond all that, in Duke’s only loss, 87-84 at Georgetown, Redick scored 41 points, and Williams scored four on two of eight shooting. See a possible key?

Georgetown also back-doored Duke repeatedly, something Tech’s not generally prone to do, unfortunately. I like that play except when my team (Ohio State) is on the wrong end of it.

Looking forward to the atmosphere tomorrow night.

Stopping Williams would be nice, but he will get the same calls that Hansbrough got and thus the guys won’t be able to aggressively defend him. What I would like to see is this: If Williams has the ball and is about to dunk or lay it in, just let him do it. Taking a swipe at the ball is gonna be whistled every time so don’t do it. But anyway, the students will enjoy rushing the floor.

As much as I hate to say this, unless we stop both JJ AND Williams (and the other three…whomever they are), this game probably will not be a Tech win…(not very likely, or not likely at all, take your pick).

So, again, have some fun and stop JJ from making history against Tech (by scoring a gazillion). I think I do not share the view of some that this team has improved-sorry.

I’d really to like to see Tech fans go to this game and cheer for their own team instead of against the refs. I grew up in Atlanta, have been to many Tech home games, and usually pull for the Jackets, but Tech fans should realize how they are perceived alongside other ACC fans:

At Duke, the Cameron Crazies are seen as arrogant and generally annoying and obnoxious while still creating enough noise for a good atmosphere and strong home court advantage

UNC will always be the wine and cheese crowd.

Maryland fans are, of course, the most over the line when it comes to bottle throwing, threats of violence, obscenity, and rioting.

Wake fans try hard but come off as just being kinda weird and sad.

Georgia Tech is seen as having by far the whiniest fans in the ACC. Anyone who’s been to a game at Tech knows that every game in the “Thrillerdome” is just an excuse for Tech fans to take out their life’s frustrations by booing the refs on EVERY SINGLE CALL against their team, no matter how obvious. Tech fans often seem oblivous to the play of their actual team because they are too busy whining.

No doubt every Tech fan is salivating over the Duke game, not to see their school take on the nation’s best team, but to feel more justified as ever about booing every time their team draws a whistle. Let me tell you right now, Duke is gonna go to the line less than Tech, possibly even MAKE MORE FREE THROWS THAN TECH ATTEMPTS, but it won’t be the refs fault. It will be because Duke is a lot better than Tech in every part of the game and will play smart with fouls rather than trying to outmuscle the other team. Remember that conspiracty theories are for losers and whiners.

Go ahead and get this into your head, prepare for it. Enjoy the game and see if your team can pull out a good performance. Appreciating basketball can sometimes be more fun than booing and letting off steam. Don’t be so predictable fellas

If I ever become a millionaire, I’m going to start a tv sports network that kisses Duke’s butt 24 hours a day. And then I’m going to hire the loudest, most obnoxious commentator I can find to ramble incessantly about the utter godliness of the almighty Duke…. Darn it! ESPN beat me to it.

Gee, atl1, I didn’t realize ‘Dookie’ Vitale had a son in Atlanta. Tell your ‘daddy’ “what’s up BABY” for us!

I say this because to have the ‘deep’ understanding of all the ACC fans, you MUST have spent many a day at the other institutions watching B-Ball. ‘Methinks’ you have fallen into the ‘stereotype’ trap that most lesser-informed fans do (but that can’t be so…surely Dickie V. wouldn’t let his boy do this).

I, for one, HAVE been to several arenas (but not all) and don’t think the Tech crowd is seen as ‘whiners’…..’nerds with bad, yellow hair?’…Yes….

I think if you’ll “poll” the other ACC fans out there, you’ll find a common theme of “Duke first, UNC second, everybody else last” when it comes to the ‘refs’. (I’ve listened to a group of Maryland and VT fans this past week saying this very thing…I guess they must be closet ‘Tech’ fans to be whining like that).

Okay, enough sarcasm….please go to the Georgia State games in the future (we need your seat at the Thrillerdome). Our fan base supports the team (though not ‘crazies’) and echoes the sentiments of the ACC fan base (sans ‘2’) regarding the officials.

We WILL CHEER…we WILL call out the refs for ‘bias’ (that’s what you’re supposed to do on your home floor in the ACC…this ain’t little league).

to Ty. I too will cheer for Tech from up I85 a few miles (have not been to AMC since Roger K days). Hopefully the ACC refs will callum loose tonight and the rat will be begging (as usual) and all GT fans will be happy and the story line will not be about a dook making scoring history.

Is atl1 a dog?

I guess the story line is an old familar tune…cannot hold the lead.

But at least JJ did not beat us nor did the ref’s…we did it all by ourself….
