That boxed-in feeling
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Anthony Morrow can’t get a break. The sophomore shooting guard is suddenly finding it difficult to even get shots.
Virginia Tech used a box-and-one defense on Morrow to keep the ball out of his hands. Boston College designated someone to chasing Morrow around, as well. He has scored a total of 10 points in the last two games.
While the Jackets have consistently been more successful offensively when the offense flows through Ra’Sean Dickey, their wins and losses seem to rest heavily on Morrow’s ability to get going. That is disturbing because it is largely unnecessary. Lewis Clinch and Zam Fredrick, as well as D’Andre Bell, are efficient enough scorers.
Do you think Tech relies too much on Morrow’s points to win?

If you watch Tech come up the court, you will most likely see Smith help push the ball. Why can’t Tech do what have always done and press the ball? I know the team is young, but they will get better.

Hewitt is having a hard time finding the right combinations. Fredrick is in the lower 25% of ACC point guards. Tech needs to deemphasize Morrow and concentrate on getting the ball in to Dickey and Smith. Its going to be difficult to win three or four more conference games. It can truly be said of this team…”wait till next year.”

They use to box and one Mark Price or try to. Morrow can’t handle the ball well enough to get around what they are putting on him. I can remember watching Jordon play at Carolina against a sub par Tech team. He would take on the whole other team, a little juke to the left, fake to the right and before you knew it the whole Tech team was lying on the floor next to their jocks. I always notice what these Cinderella teams have in March is a very good ball handling guard. He might not be able to shoot and may be 5 ft. tall, but he gets the ball up the court and in the hands of whom it is suppose to be. N.C. State in it’s glory days had that. A lot of times these guys are not recruited because of there size, but what a workhorse they turn out to be. Also the end up being a coach on the court.

Morrow has not learned to move well without the ball nor has he learned to use the pump fake and put the ball on the floor. He should spend time watching film of JJ Reddick or Reggie Miller.

The FLOOR BALANCE each time down is an adventure, at time atrocious. They “hand-off” better than the FB team. Fast breaks are painful to watch at times. If Jarret Jack would have stayed, this team would have been fine. They have a strong post, mid-range, and long range with proper balance on the floor. Problem is, they have no balance, and no current PG that will manage the floor. A good PG could mean 10 more pts., and 6 less turnovers. That translates into being 15-4 vs. 9-10. Unless these guys grow up, and I do think they can, it’s a next year thing. I think this group can beat anybody, problem is, they can also lose to anybody. ACC tourney is only chance. I think they can win a game, maybe two, but running the table may be an issue.

I think Coach is just about ready to scrap having Zam as the defacto PG. Start looking for anybody and everybody bringing the ball up court to try and push the action. That being said, I think nobody is going to want to play this team come tourney time. Remember, they’re all Fr. & Soph. Every game they learn more and get better.

Face it guys, this team does not have a point guard. They are working very hard and learning, but they will not show results until they get a point guard with experiance. We have a good point guard comming in next year but it will take at least a year for him to get the ACC experiance needed. Don’t get impatient, they will be a little better next year, but the big improvement will be in two years. Keep the faith and it will pay off!
