First loss had Hewitt hiding

Tech basketball coach Paul Hewitt did something Saturday he never does: He stayed home, all day.

Never saw the sunshine, never stepped foot out his front door. Sure, there was a pretty big football game going on at The Flats, but Hewitt caught only snippets of it in between brooding over the film from Tech’s loss to Illinois-Chicago.

The Yellow Jackets played only average defense and shot the ball poorly. Tech’s best players, Anthony Morrow and Jeremis Smith, sat sulking on the bench while in foul trouble. It wasn’t the type of demeanor the Jackets can take out on the road, particularly not to Michigan State, where it plays in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge tonight. Morrow said that his mental cave-in was not at all typical of his regular style of play, and it won’t be repeated.

Hewitt hopes not, or he may be hiding out even more often.

Do think Tech can or will eventually display the mental toughness Hewitt is looking for?

Yes they can. Yes they will. They are all very young and trying to fill huge shoes. Give these guys some time.

Question to Chan Gailey (2001): Can Tech ever be a consistently dominant college FB team?

Answer:

‘Yes they can. Yes they will. They are all very young and trying to fill huge shoes. Give these guys some time.’

The scary part of the loss to UIC, is that they lost to Georgia Southern by 20 the next game and had lost to St. Xavier, and NAIA team the game before. Ouch.

Are you kidding me? This expectation is unreal. 5 new starters ANYWHERE is tough to handle. UNC almost lost to a DIV III team earlier in November. Is doomsday upon them? NO. Give these kids some time to adjust to game situations and playing from behind. Don’t even compare Hewitt to Gailey!! What an ignorant fan!

They’ll be fine. Everyone knew there’d be a dropoff, and the beauty of BBall is that losing early is not a totally bad thing. Although 20 pts to UIC…

Looks like Hewitt will have plenty of opportunities to hide.

Georgia fans are running smack about basketball? What on this sweet earth would possess them to even have such thoughts?

OTOH, Tech played an outstanding Michigan State team tonight who has their entire Final 4 roster back from last season. They took em’ to the final posession. A win would have been nice, but with a team this young…one must be realistic.

2 things I noticed from the Jackets tonight: 1. silly turnovers/traveling will be eliminated after they get some more games under them. 2. Their low-post scoring was dynamic, but their low-powt defense should get better as well.

Hewitt has already posted a season better than any in UGA history. I notice we also have 2 5-star and 2 3-star recruits for next year, while UGA has 1 3-star recruit. Just a couple of facts our Dawg posters have left out.

HAHA, that’s what fans whose program has one 3-star recruit would say. That’s usually what we say in early February about our football recruits.
