A bowl wish list

If I were a Georgia Tech fan, there are three things I’d want to see out of a bowl game.

First, a victory, which would create the first eight-win season under Chan Gailey. Second, a return of the offensive success displayed against Wake Forest, and that’s certainly a possibility considering the Jackets aren’t likely to be playing a defense as good as Miami’s or Georgia’s.

Finally, a great farewell effort from the seniors that have meant so much to Tech’s defense, players like Gerris Wilkinson, Eric Henderson, Dawan Landry, Chris Reis, Dennis Davis and Reuben Houston.

I’d add good special teams play, but that might be asking too much.

Here’s what I’d like to see:

1) Reggie Ball retire. He has started more games than 95% of all college QBs ever get the chance to start and has not improved. I am sick of people saying “you just want him not to lose the game”. With this much time invested in him, you want an experienced QB with tall, fast receivers and a better-than-expected offensive line to WIN games on his good days and simply not lose them on his bad days. Reggie has not come close to what should be expected of a 3rd-year starter.

2) Gailey retire and become AD. I’m finished hating him, even though I blame him for not developing a single QB in 4 years, including AJ Sucks, Reggie and the other several top-50 national recruits at QB on this roster. Isn’t Gailey the guy in charge of the offense? Isn’t he the one who takes pride in his ability to develop QBs on the NFL level? Just make him the AD, since he’s such a “good guy” and get him off the sidelines.

3) Make Tenuta the head coach before we lose him. He will be gone this off-season unless this happens. Why else would he stick around? I don’t even think he’ll be here for the bowl game, to be honest, because he’s coming off two unbelievable performances and he, unlike many others around the Tech program, understands what he is losing on the defensive side next season.

4) Dave Braine to check himself into rehab. And add an apology to the fans and a refund of my season tickets and AT donations for all the games we “vacated” under his watch.

My bowl wishes. A bowl game played on a green turf. In a location that can double as a vacation (ie wife/kids). An offensive “what the heck” attitude that will result in a win. A good win to give recruits something positive to build off of. Lastly the GT team that beat Miami & WF show up instead of the NCST team. Sorry the seniors never beat the Dawgs during what was called their rebuilding year. That would have been a wish but I just hd a feeling pulling off two big wins in a row isn’t in our blood. One more people fill the stands next year, is doesn’t look good when on TV the show kickoffs and all the empty seats.

I’d like…

  1. Someplace where the grass isn’t blue.
  2. Sompelace where the temp is above 30.
  3. A win, however, in the case of a loss, I’d like to see the defense walk out on the feild during the offensive possession and start beating the tar out of Reggie Ball.
  4. A new quarterback that doesn’t run his mouth after average acheivements, like a 2 yard gains.

..Okay, that was pretty funny! Reggie also needs to stop being a whiney bytch when the play doesn’t develope! He has this look like he’s about to cry, and say “Aw, maaan!”

Dear Santa My wish list is to make Gailey the AD and make Tenuta the head coach Nix needs to have his shot to be OC We looked so promising Let’s get to a bowl that is warm and sunny and not before Christmas.

  1. I think we keep Tenuta for 1 more year. Currently there are no major D-IA vacancies for head coach that would be a move up for him. And I don’t see him taking a job at Texas A&M (although Fran could sure use him) because he’s not likely to get any more exposure for a head coaching job there than he already does at Tech. Clearly, he will have his day, but unless some additional “big” jobs open up, he’s got 1 more year at Tech.

  2. The days of having the retired coach as AD are long gone. Whoever replaces Braine needs a lot more than coaching experience on their resume. Significant business and administrative experience is the order of the day.

  3. Doy, yes we all want to win the game, but I hope we get matched up against a good team like Minnesota. As much as I liked beating up on Tulsa and a very poor Syracuse team, it would be nice to beat a more respectable team from a big conference.

HEY IDIOTS!! You are stuck with Gailey now that dumb Dave caved in early and gave Gailey a 5 year deal. We aren’t going to buy him out anytime soon. Forget Tenuta he is gone. DONE DEAL!!! So get over it now. I agree he may be gone prior to the bowl game wherever that is. Also Gailey is the OC and that is all on Braine. He should have given Gailey the HC only and given the OC to someone else down the road when he signed Gailey to the extension. If Gailey didn’t like it he could have walked. Basically DUMB DAVE WAS A CHICKEN SHI+T. I like Gailey the man but he is a moron as OC. Don’t blame it all on Ball. Gailey called the plays. When Tech is providing the ride Ball does what the HC says, ask Ball I bet if cornered he will tell you he has disagreed with many calls sent his way. Of course he won’t admit it but it is obvious. Ditto Calvin. Just hope he stays one more year which I think he has to at this point.

Also there are no bad bowls only a bad system in D1 football. God, let’s hope VT beats FSU and saves the ACC. Can’t have a non-top25 team advancing to the BCS. While they most likely will be top 25 if they beat VT they still have 4 losses and that would be embarassing for the ACC. There is a lot to shake out over the next 5 weeks. The given is that GT will win their bowl game against someone like Northwestern. Gailey will get his 8 wins and someone will say that Braine was justified in his contract extension. The bottom line is that GT is in trouble and the deep water is where Braine is treading.

You Geeks are hilarious. Be glad your ‘joke’ of a program is even GOING to a bowl. Blue turf is perfect for you clowns. If you don’t want to go to Boise, then maybe you’ll get selected for the “My Program’s On Probation Bowl”…or possibly the “100 LBS of Marijuana Bowl” (either one would be appropriate). tech should just book a charter out to Boise. Just think, there would be plenty of room for ALL of their fans, the sissy-looking mascot, AND the flag boy! So…have fun watching your program lose even more money by going to a patsy bowl. How sweet it is….year, after year, after year………..

I keep reading speculation that he’s leaving, but nobody has suggested just where he’s going.

Tenuta leaving is possible considering the job he does with guys that didn’t come in as 5-star recruits. The rumors come from wishful thinking Dawg fans and “the sky is falling” Tech fans.

It’s incredible that loser jerks like “Joke” and “BoiseBowl” have to come on the GT blog instead of their own. They aren’t even worth answering.

I watched the game again last night. UGA does NOT own GT, or anyone else, for that matter. We played better than them the entire game right up to the end. There sure is a lot of tough talk coming from a group who won a game in the last minute against a middle-tier ACC team.

And Nashville does have green grass, where the temp should be around or over 30 degrees. It’s not a far drive and we should have a great crowd. Go TECH!

My bowl wish list starts with getting an opponent that is worthy of playing against Tech. We’ve crushed the last two teams. I’d like to play another SEC team like in the Peach Bowl. Or a decent Big 10 team. Not sure Minnesota fits that description. My other wish is to play closer to New Year’s Day. Looks like we will be playing on Dec 30th or later. (Likely the same day as UGA. Ha, take that.)

On another note, did anyone notice that Tech lost last week and didn’t fall out of any top 25 rankings? Tech was ranked 21, 24 before the UGA game. Now they are ranked 24 in every poll. To me that is a sign that Tech’s program has turned the corner. Not only have they played better, but they’ve managed to elevate the national perception of the program in the minds of poll voters. That is key. That’s the kind of thing you need to make a BCS bowl. Just look at Notre Dame. They’re not necessarily deserving of a BCS bowl. But because of the perception of their program, they have staying power in the polls. Tech is one step closer to where they want to be.

Tenuta doesn’t like the bright lights and he likes control. Up till this year he got both here. He doesn’t do interviews, he just coaches football. I always felt he made Brown at Carolina, before Brown bolted to Texas. While at Texas Brown lived off the rep Tenuta created for him until he had about 5 number one recruiting classes in a row and one of the weakest conferences in the BCS, which now has him looking at a NC. USC will chew him a new one like they did Ok (from the same conference) a couple of years ago. Could you imagine working for Spurrier. Tenuta is where he needs to be, Gailey won’t bother him, which is why he is so good in the first place.

Hey GATechfanwhoknowsstuff, you are delusional if you think you will beat Northwestern…IF you even get to face them! Good luck stopping their offense! You might have a chance in beating Minnesota in the Music City bowl because they stink outside of the Metrodome. Even that would be a tough game, though. The big question has to be which Tech team will show up? The one that beat Auburn and Miami…or the one that lost to NC State or got annhilated by VA Tech? If Tech can play focused, they can win any game…duh?! That’s why they are so wishy-washy though! Your best bet would be to face a Big East team or a team from the WAC. Not Northwestern…be careful what you wish for!!

By Sam

November 30, 2005 12:10 PM | Link to this

Brewerfan - i see your bias has made you delusional - Northwestern offense can’t be stoppped by tech defense? Apparently its happened to Northwestern 4 times this year by average defenses…nice argument…to much milwaquee’s (sp) best i presume…perhaps drunkbrewerfaninatl

By brewerfaninATL

November 30, 2005 12:23 PM | Link to this

Nah, don’t like the taste of Milwaukee’s Best…too bland! Sorry, but average defenses? Lost to Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State…yeah average defenses alright! The other one they lost was a slug-fest with Arizona State(the same team that darn-near beat LSU) They only had 2 lopsided losses by powerhouses in Mich. and OSU, which will happen from time to time. GA Tech does not scare Northwestern…or Minnesota for that matter! I didn’t say N’Western offense CAN’T be stopped…just WON’T be by Tech!

By CW

November 30, 2005 12:28 PM | Link to this

Brewer Fan, NW has a good offense, but they haven’t faced too many defenses of the same caliber as Tech. Tech has been very successful at shutting down teams’ running games and forcing them to be one dimensional. If Tenuta gets his blitzes going, Basenez (sp?) will be on his back ALOT.

Yes, our offense has struggled some this year, but Tech has also faced 6 teams that rank in the top 15 in total defense and beaten 3 of them. I don’t know where NW ranks in total defense, but it isn’t in the top 50. And when given extra time to prepare the offense, Coach Gailey seems to do pretty well. I like our chances if we face NW, and hope we get to play them.

By brewerfaninATL

November 30, 2005 12:41 PM | Link to this

True, N’western’s defense is much to be desired, but you have to realize that they have faced some of the country’s best offenses in ASU, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mich. State, Ohio State, Michigan, etc. While Tech’s defense can cause some problems, the offense is probably ranked where N’western’s defense is. I’m not saying you CAN’T win, I’m saying you guys are crazy to think you can just chalk up a W if you play N’western. Most any other year, Tech could and probably would beat them, probably and most definately not this year! You make some valid points, but they are all very big IF’S. No one has any clue whatsoever as to which Tech team will show up…and that spells trouble this time of year!

I cried because I had no shoes until I saw the man who had no feet. 4-7 is a lot worse than 7-4. Of course Tenuta is gone, that’s what happens to good coaches. And so is Hewitt, eventually. If you don’t like change, move to Pittsburgh and root for the Steelers. Braine was foolish to tell the truth. Politicians always lie and AD’s are the ultimate politicians.

Brewer Fan, checked the stats and you’re right about some of the offenses you’ve faced. AZ St, Mich St and Minn are all ranked top 10 in total yards. Sounds like we should root for a Tech v NW matchup and see who wins between your O and our D.

Also, you may be new to the Tech blogs, but no honest Tech fan ever chalks up a W without worrying about it. For examples see Duke 2 years ago, UNC last year etc.
