Distractions galore for Jackets
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
This is worst than a hurricane. Georgia Tech has had to deal with some pretty stormy distractions this week. It isn’t like Hurricane Wilma, which forced its Oct. 21 game against Miami to be postponed until this week. But it’s been a lot, nonetheless.
Coach Chan Gailey received a contract extension, taking him through 2010. Cornerback Reuben Houston received a court order which has allowed him to rejoin the team — and play this Saturday since Gailey has indicated he’s likely to use him. Additionally, the NCAA levied its sanctions Thursday.
Do you think this is too much for the players to handle as they enter the Orange Bowl? Players have said all week that they are somewhat insulated as a team, and have a way of keeping outside issues from becoming a distraction. But how often are players, particularly college athletes, able to focus in the midst of so many issues?

Better to just get all the stuff out of the way all at once. An actual football game Saturday will be a relief!
As for how players will respond, who knows? We never know, even on quiet weeks!

Sorry Techies, there is a reason Chan got the extension. He is the only coach that would stay at your school as you go on probation and become the bottom of the barrel in the acc. You already took some luster out of the dawg game by losing last week now for the next 5 years you are going to use the excuse that your on probation when we are stomping your team on the field.
Enjoying your unsuccess, John

Players play.

Also, you forgot to mention Dave Braine’s stupid, stupid comment the other day as yet another distraction.
But that crap doesn’t matter to players.

Busy week. I believe Houston will be a huge boost for us, he is a leader and provides our defense a spark. As far as probation, it hurts tech, it hurts georgia, and the acc. It is a sad day for the program, and all the institutions that are involved with us. I would say the same if it happened to uga. Chan please hire an offensive coordinator, and special teams coach. I think you could turn your job around real easily if you focused on being a great head coach. Go Tech.

I guess now that every player NCAA wide under indictment will be reinstated. Unbelievable! A coach can boot players from the team for offenses that are detrimental to the team or other mischief that does not come close to criminal, yet a judge forces the school to reinstate an INDICTED (alleged) drug dealer. Give me a break! If Tech allows Houston on the field it is just another black eye to go with all the rest of this weeks bruises.

Tech fans, your team needs your help. All you self professed “Tech big money men” that are always crying and whining, get proactive. Stop disguising yourselves as empty seats. If you are ashamed to be seen at a Tech game, wear a paper sack over your head. You can call yourselves the wanna-bees! It worked for the “ain’ts”. Come on “money boys.” Support the team. Well, yesterday the kitchen cought fire, today the roof fell in!! All of these problems are Dave Braine’s problems. Gailey has to accept Houston back but he does not have to play him. If he does play him, shame, shame! The probation is Braines fault! Should have never happened. The self-imposed penalties were an attempted whitewash. I am totally ashamed to admit I was a Tech Football fan. NO MORE. When does Basketball start? I AM MAKING A PLEA THAT PRESIDENT CLOUGH FIRE BRAINE AND GAILY TODAY!! 1963 GRADUATE

So, now the timing of Braine’s contract extension for Chan Gailey makes sense. The Institute knew the severity of the sanctions and locked Gailey in for the duration to prevent any perception of total loss of institutional control.
Pretty clever.

Ironic that the one person most responsible for Tech’s “student athlete” woes, Carol Moore, will not fell any of the heat. As a tenured professor who has since been “reassigned” (that is, put back in her cushy faculty position), she can continue along fat, dumb, and happy. (Accent on the “dumb”.)

Relax folks…this too shall pass. Don’t rock the boat any more than it’s already rocking. A little more of that and we’ll start taking in water…for the younguns sakes. They are sure to drown as swimming was dropped from the Institute’s list of mandatory courses. Time to hunker down (did I say that?) and let the storm pass. Braine will soon be out to pasture and I sure hope they find someone with REAL brain and a fire in his belly to get us back on the right track. As far as Chan, don’t expect miracles and in the same breadth things as bad in the football department as he can make them. It’s bound to get better. Now repeat after me….What’s the Good Word? there…feel better already.

I am a Bulldog fan however the only day I despise the Jackets is when both teams face off against each other. I also consider myself a fan of college athletics. these NCAA rules are not fair at all. Why? Well only a handfull get caught. I am certain that each institution breaks the rules set out for them. The trick is not getting caught. When only a handful of the schools get caught something is wrong. Yesterday South Carolina was put on probation for its football program-Violations that were made during Lou Holtz’s tenure. It is no fair at all to punish teams that are removed from those violations. Lou Holtz should be fined and not allowed to be a TV analyst instead of the junk South Carolina was just imposed with. The NCAA rules are not fair to the athletes. You know there are many people who want to be college athletes but why bother when you can’t work and can’t accept help for things that you could do if you were making some money. When the school makes buckoo bucks because of what I do on the field/court/whatever the school owes me more than an education-At least make sure I have enough money to buy groceries and keep myself warm in the winter.
Okay…Okay….Count to ten….Rant over. Phew. What I was trying to say is that the NCAA needs to either enforce their rules strictly or don’t even bother making them in the first place.

The UGA fans masquerading as clever and posting under fake names are either high schoolers or folks that have too much time on their hands. As to the probation, all is not lost. We admitted the violations, and the air is now clear for the future. I, for one, will continue to go to games and cheer for the team that I love. Anybody that “has been a Tech fan for the last 400 years” should pretty clearly remember the winless seasons, and realize that our team is 6-3, full of talent, poised to destroy UGAg in a week and show up like a true fan. Yeah, I had a football player for a calculus T.A., and he was honestly the worst T.A. I’ve ever had… worse that T.A.s that don’t speak any english and teach microeconomics. That said, not every football player has to be great at calculus, but the vast majority have to take it and pass it. Furthermore, I have yet to run across a cupcake class at Tech, whereas “unreversities” like UGA have P.E. departments and other ventures for athletes to take advantage of. Tech offers 2 P.E.’s intermittently; swim training and jog training, both of which have a 15 student capacity. You do the math, that is, if you can.

Here we go again with another apologist with blinders on. Greg, do you really think that all the Nerd footballers are engineering majors? Tech has plenty of hide out courses for your less than stellar scholars. Or did you forget that Joe Hamilton has returned to Tech for the two years he needs to get a degree after spending five years there playing football and basically being shuffled from crip course to crip course in order to keep his eligibility. This probation mess is another fine kettle of fish that you can leave on O’Liary’s front doorstep. He recruited them, he hid them out, and he blew the joint as soon as an attractive job came along. Keep an eye on Central Florida, if the administration down there is as desperate to win as Tech was, then Georgie boy will have them in a mess a few years down the road. O’Liary may be a good football coach but he is definitely no shining example to hold up as an ideal.

I tried to tell all of you Trade School fans that your constant use of the “academic superiority excuse” would eventually come back to bite you. In the last week it has been pointed out that you have players who spent five years at your fine Institution and never got within hailing distance of a diploma but also never lost any eligibility. Your athletic program had wide spread use of ineligible athletes in multiple sports. You had to take your drug dealer back into the fold after it was pointed out that there were other criminals in the program who hadn’t been given more than a slap on the wrist after they and had their crimes hushed up, and on top of everything else the sacred calculus cow had to be sacrificed on the altar of NCAA probation.

Makes me so damn mad! College football is so antiquated. Yeah, I want a computer to tell me that due to the polls and final BCS standings that the NCAA has come up with the best two teams to square off. Give me a break. They may indeed be the best two teams but until a playoff system is established college football is in the doldrums. The NFL has risen so far ahead of college football it isn’t funny. Yes, I know most athletes aren’t engineering majors, but name one of the so called plethora of bogus majors that are exempt from taking physics, calculus and computer science. There are majors that are easier than others, but there are no cupcakes. Believe me, the athletes at tech get a ton of flak from fellow students for not having to take diff eq’s or anything near that level, but I’d gladly stand our athletes up against any other schools any day, if for no other reason than their having been forced to take a few difficult classes.

Every time the NCAA “tries” to crack down on the football factories, it always hits the academically tougher schools worst.

Well dang it. I never knew how many of my fellow Bulldog fans could be hypocritical. “Stop Cheating, Tech” Like we don’t cheat? Every school cheats. No questions asked. I don’t know why the NCAA even tries to make rules, cause every school (TEch, Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Kennesaw, I bet even Harvard and Yale) takes the rules and rips them apart into confetti. No one cares, untile they get caught. My question is this: If everyone is cheating and breaking NCAA rules…than does that mean everyone is really cheating? I mean if every athletic program in America breaks the NCAA rules…each school is on equal footing with each other because they are all cheating.

Here is my take:
1) The NCAA went overboard in the punishment. We came clean and were a first offender. We messed up but it was an honest mistake. It’s not like we were paying players to come to Tech or giving grades away.
2) Alot of heat should come off Gailey RIGHT NOW. George had as many issues or more from what I have seen so far. The 10 lost players last year (that failed out) appear to be more with the School gaining control than an issue with Gailey - the same would have happen if George had not left for ND.
3) Tech fans need to pick up the pieces. It has been a rough week - but nothing is ever easy and any Tech Grad understands this from his/her time at the school.
4) Finally -
I am a ramblin wreck from Georgia Tech and a hell-of an engineer … like all the jolly good fellas, I drink my whiskey clear, I am a ramblin gamblin hell of an engineer.
Lastly, I would like to say that there have been quite a few post from Dawg fans that have showed true class - thanks - but I do hope we beat you next week (sooner or later we have to get a break)

You cry like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar and this time you were. We are glad that you don’t post on a UGA blog because you would immediately start the academic superiority whine even though that fairy tale has been exposed big time over the last few months. You all can keep telling yourselves that your academic scandal was an honest clerical mistake if it makes you feel better, but it was too wide spread and went on for far to long to have been a minor oversight by some poor clueless secretary. You cheated, you got caught, take your punishment, and quit crying like little kids trying to weasel a lesser punishment for breaking the rules by using that tired old “everyone else was doing it and they didn’t get punished as much” refrain.

Georgia Tech has screwed itself once again. That is nothing new. However, the moron that says GT doesn’t have better academic standards than UGA is just that. They don’t graduate a high percentage because it is a really hard school and they don’t hand out A’s to athletes (UGA basketball team - biggest joke ever) like UGA or most easier state institutions. UGA will probably rape us this year in fball, but for the time being they should keep their mouths shut because we easily beat Auburn on their HOME field. The SEC sucks this year in fball and has always sucked academically. Academically, it is the worst among power conferences by far (Go figure, it is the South). Bball starts tonight. Games aren’t forfeited, folks, just “vacated”. They never happened. So that wipes out 3 GT victories over the pups from 98-‘00, and also wipes out 3 losses to the pups in ‘01, ‘02, and ‘04. So any who want to disregard the three Tech wins must also disregard the 51-7 blowout, the 17 point win in ‘02, and the 4th down fiasco of last year as well.

Techies and Dawgies both need to wake up. As an Emory grad, neither can talk to me about academic superiority-especially as related to this state’s educational system.
Neither school can claim “academic integrity” in their programs. There is one clear difference however: UGA never claimed to have it, now Tech can’t rely on it for its shortcomings.

I thought we have established that the games weren’t forfeited like 2 hrs ago, so none of those count as wins. If you are a GT fan you have to have a short memory if you know what I mean. We already manhandled MIGHTY AUBURN. HAHAHA. Playing golf on a Friday = jobless. You should take after your gf/wife and get a job. She does a great job answer my phones and giving me “massages”.

ACC fan, you forgot to mention that that player is no longer playing for UGA. Does anyone remember the “Pizza Brawl?” Two techsters, one a 300lb lineman, one a 250lb linebacker beat the hell out of a 100lb GIRL and played that Saturday. Remember the wideout that got caught with a bag of pot in a jacket he was wearing and the O’fat one said “it wasn’t his jacket” and played him? Remember the star player that destroyed his dorm room and couldn’t enroll until the damages were paid and the O’fat one pulled $300.00 from his wallet and paid it? Remember the starting safety that was caught breaking into cars and stealing stereos? (and was run down by a campus security guard I might add. Says alot about your talent level) Of course the guard was probably one of O’Leary’s boys that had exhausted his eligibility or finally had to take calculus in his 4th or 5th year and hit the trail. Nobody buys your sanctimonius crap anymore. Thanks to the NCAA we now know that many Tech players NEVER take calculus either. They take crip courses until their eligibility expires without ever opening a calculus book. Your program has been exposed techmites. Thank you NCAA. You have rendered all excuses for losing null and void. Too bad you can’t take care of the crying and whining too.

I am so disappointed in our sports program right now. I believed that TECH was better than that, but I guess I was wrong. I am still glad that I have my degree from a great school, but I wish that it was not tainted with all the stuff going on with the sports teams. I wish that Braine understood that his pathetic decisions are a poor reflection upon us all, athlete and non-athlete alike. Gailey is consistently rated as one of the worst coaches in college football, we have been told that our school better accept substandard expectations (6 or 7 win seasons, if we are lucky), and that whatever hope we had before is now extinguished with the NCAA sanctions.
I hope you have a great Thanksgiving Braine because, with regards to Georgia Tech athletics, we have nothing to be thankful for.

Please note that Tech was not “caught”. A GT admin realised they had interpeted a rule incorrectly. Tech staff owned up to the fact they had made a mistake and turned themselves into the NCAA. Personally I’m proud of how Tech has conducted itself, and think the NCAA ruling is a slap in the face. NO ONE will come clean with admin mistakes to the NCAA again.

I have to say, Emory is not a joke. Yes, the difficulty in getting in is only surpassed by the difficulty in failing out, but a great education is gained, nonetheless.

Hello tech fans : You all seem to want ME to stay off YOUR blog - it’s to easy - all of you take the bait !!
This has been a nightmare week @ tech & with the CANES & the DAWGS coming up it is only gonna get worse. In a DAWGS world this week is hilarious. NO MORE , we have NEVER been on probation stuff - your LAME excuse’s about academic standard’s . Here are the FACT’S :
1 ) Your president rehired a football coach who has proven what he can do - average @ best —
2) The court(???) makes you put an (alledged, where there is smoke there is fire)DRUG DEALER back on the team. If Gailey play’s him. ESPN will be all over it. How will that look on a NATIONAL TV GAME.
3)Now, your on PROBATION - Does that mean the DAWGS have now whipped you 14 years in a row - probably not 11-3 FOR SURE !!!!
4) For us DAWG fans to call your football program a JOKE is one thing. But, when your president say’s it in public - DOES IT GET ANY WORSE.

What goes through a person’s mind when they look into a camera and bark? Do they honestly think it is amusing? Do they think it is some sort of communication with Uga 1, 2 3, or whatever number the dog is? Do they think it makes themm look sophisticated or smart? Do they think it is attractive? Try this…. look into a mirror and bark. Now get on all four’s and rollover. Now sit. Good dog. Now go back to your little school in Athens and bark with your mutt fans.

I am serious when I say that I feel sad for Tech’s players. Most of them are quality kids who suffer because of bad leadership across the board. Hopefully they won’t be victimized again by the presence of Rueben Houston on the field. They don’t deserve it on top of everything else. They also deserve fans that want to be part of the solution instead of the biggest part of the problem.

The worm sure has turned hasn’t it Mike? Now we have Mark Richt, not Goff, not Donnan. You can bet that if Houston played at UGA or South Carolina that the stadium grass would never touch the bottom of his shoes again. A judge can make them suit Houston up, but he can’t make the coach play him. I hope that there is that much integrity left at Tech. Your good kids don’t need the hoopla that Houston getting on the field would generate. They deserve better.

Not that reality matters too much in these “discussions”, but, as a matter of perspective, US News ranks Tech 9th, UGA 19th, of all public universities in the US. Both are very good schools, academically.
Interestingly, Cal is #1. They do a pretty good job with football. Virginia, UNC, and Michigan (!) are in the top 5. Michigan manages a pretty good football team. I’m sure there are a lot of ways to evaluate universities, and this is just one, but kind of interesting.

Infractions?
You Georgia fans want to come on here, and above everything else, talk about infractions??????
Okay. Fine. Let’s talk infractions.
Here’s your list:
Nov. 14, 1978 - infractions in 1975-76, 1976-77 & 1977-78 academic years. Sept. 20, 1982 - infractions in 1981-82 Jan. 4, 1985 - infractions in 1985-86, 1986-87 May 22, 1985 - infractions in 1985 March 5, 1997 - infractions in 1993-1994, 1994-95 Aug. 5, 2004 - 1998-1999, 2001-2002, 2002-2003
Here’s ours: 2006-2008

No Joker it is what happens when a group of arrogant whiners who constantly scapegoated academics and calculus for losing finally get taken to the woodshed. It’s called reaping what you sow. Two comments. First, one reason Tech has a lower graduation rate is that many students, not athletes take five years to graduate. Players only have four years of eligibility and cant take the same rigorous schedule. Second, maybe if Tech offered similar courses to the ones UGA does, like Coaching Principles and Strategies we wouldnt have this problem.
Bonus question: How many points does a 3-point field goal account for in a basketball game?

Obviously Tech came up with some very creative ways to take care of some very dumb athletes. Can you spell JOE BURNS? If you were sending lots of players to the NFL early it would at least gloss over some of the cases. People that still don’t want to see it for what it was need to ask the NCAA. They’ll tell you.

When we play OU we bash each other but nothing like this. Why don’t yall wait until next week to start all the bs? Don’t worry, football season is almost over. That’s fortunate for you Tech fans, but you UGA fans… sorry, opening game to next season is in about 9-10 months cause everyone knows the rest of your sports teams are too damn sorry to pay attention to.

Wes, you can site infractions all day long, but even you should be able to see the irony in all this. A school that yelled long and loud about academic restraints and calculus gets nailed for 52 counts of academic fraud and lack of institutional control. But wes, there is a silver lining to this cloud. Now you can whine that your academics got you put on probation and that can be the new excuse for losing. Now that you know the truth about your academics you can use a truthful excuse for losing. Congratulations.

Well, maybe Tech needs to come up with some “jock majors” like UGA. Remember, the too-many-electives that Tech players were taking, the courses that got us in trouble, are core courses at UGA. If we had those jock majors, taught by Harrickesque “profs”, the NCAA would have given us their Good Housekeeping Seal.
According to the NCAA, you can run all the “football for dummies” majors you want. Just don’t let your athletes take too many crip courses while in a real major.
THAT is what bothers me the most. Hey NCAA, sportsmanship and academic integrity must be dead if you are alive. And anyone, anywhere, who “self-reports” any violations after this fiasco is a dang fool.
To put it another way, to lose integrity, you have to have had it in the first place!!!
