Sharing the load at RB
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
In past seasons, P.J. Daniels averaged about 24 carries a game, as long as he was healthy.
Now, he averages about 18.
Those missing carries are going to Tashard Choice, who rushes about nine times a game. It looks like a successful balance, keeping Daniels healthy and fresh and getting Choice some opportunities to show what he can do, too. Neither running back complains publicly about the number of carries each gets. Both average about 5 yards a carry (Choice 5.1, Daniels 4.7). Choice has four touchdowns; Daniels three. Tech ranks among the ACC’s top three teams in rushing yardage.
Some football people think a team is better off sticking with one tailback as much as possible, so he can get into a rhythm. Others say alternating tailbacks leads to better results.
What would you do?

keep them alternating. It keeps PJ fresh and injury free, and a nice change of pace to have Choice’s quicks in the game.
Plus, with the number of big plays Choice has made, the team doesn’t lose any confidence when PJ is out.

Not to mention, it helps with building the future, especially if you can get a tandem that aren’t both seniors.
I also think it looks good to recruits to see more than one featured back, let’s them know that the playtime is not ear-marked for only one guy.

Whats up with the AJC only publishing Georgia fan’s in the tech Vent? I hate the AJC. Too bad a UGA Journalism degree only gets you a job on the worst newspaper in the United States. Pathetic. Go Jackets.

P.J. is a very good athlete and seems to have endless stamina; in fact, some think he gets stronger with more work. But that defies logic. Your body needs rest to “recharge”. High intensity for shorter periods normally generates less injury than prolonged work periods. Last year, I think P.J. was used (a few times)too long. Therefore, keep them alternating is a good Choice!

Definitely keep them rotating, mainly because it keeps Daniels pretty fresh and healthy. All three teams left on on our schedule Daniels either missed or was not 100% playing them. I think we might just play better than people think we can. Also putting Grant on kickoff coverage was a good call. However, if I were Gailey, I might try putting Woods at reciever more often every time that I have seen him play wideout, he did good.

Retired engineer…Herschel Walker would disagree. After all…the ball ain’t heavy.

Herschel usually scored so quickly that he never had to work long periods.LOL
But, when you get home from Atlanta this year and start licking your wounds, you dogs might just wish you had old Hersh back for one more game!

Tech has been very successful with alternating runners thus far and I believe they will continue to do so. The O-line has been impressive given their experience and size. Mike Cox has been the biggest surprise. It seems like every play that he is sealing off a block or taking his man out of the play. I Would like to see him get a couple of carries on 2nd and 3 or 3rd and 1 every now and then to keep defense true to all of the backs. Do this and the passing game opens up even more.

What happenned to the screen passes to Chris Woods? They worked! He’s a senior who needs to get on the field here and there. I’m sure CW is down after Reshaun Grant taking over kickoff duty, but I wouldn’t be suprised if Coach Gailey implemented a little bit of extra work on O for Mr. Woods…just so he doesn’t hang his head the rest of his senior year.

BTW, having two running backs sharing time is a horrible thing for a football team. Just ask Auburn.

What’s wrong with the option? Reggie is fast and quick and when we’ve run it (all two times)), we’ve had great results with the exception of the holding pentilty. Anyway, I’d love to see more of that. It’s exciting and it works. Both running backs would do well.

I love having Choice as an experienced and talented backup, but I think Daniels has been under utilized in the 4th quarter of games especially. The guy loves to take it to the defender and dish out some punishment. Considering how many of our game have gone down to the wire, PJ should be icing games instead of being a bystander.

The Clemson game demonstrated the difference between Choice and P.J. On a third and 1 choice was nailed in his tracks by a Clemson safety and stopped short. On the goal line, Clemson’s linebacker, Waters, nailed P. J. only to see P. J. shake him off and go for two yards. But on an outside break, Choice juked, broke it outside and used his speed to get us in scoring position. Choice has the speed, P. J. has the leg strength and drive.

I love to see Tech work it’s two backs BUT , I would love to see Loyall Gause get a few snaps. In spring practice he showed the ability to make the big play. He may be the best 5th string tailback in college football.

Guase is not playing for a reason. I agree with the poster who said we should have PJ as our featured back towards the end of the 4th quarter.

Matt: it is not the AJC’s decision, they publish whatever comments are written. You are really just bemoaning that there are more Georgia fans that read your own blog.
And before you cry foul, you should read the UGA blog, we get hounded by fans of whatever team we are playing that week. That is just how the blogs work. Freedom of speech, baby. Freedom of speech.

Yes, LD, and we have to remember the sheer number of readers that are UGA fans vs. Tech fans, they are definitely trying to help circulation and controversy does just that. It’s not only a free speech issue, it’s ultimately a $ issue.
As far as Ball running the option, I like it except for one thing - it would require him to think fast, make quick decisions, aand he has not shown that he can do that consistently, IMO.
