Motivating factors

Fifteen years ago, Georgia Tech won at Virginia. It has been winless in Charlottesville since.

Of course, the 1990 game holds a special place in Georgia Tech lore: The Yellow Jackets upset No. 1 Virginia, 41-38.

But now Tech is mired in a long dry spell — six-straight losses at Scott Stadium. Coach Chan Gailey said he will not mention the losing streak to his team. Still, some of the players are very much aware of it. Chris Reis said it would be used as motivation.

Do you think Gailey should take Reis’ approach, or try to separate this year’s teams from that by not bringing it up at all? Would mentioning the losing streak do more damage or good?

The greatest motivation that the team could have is the knowledge that another victory may be what it takes to get Coach Gailey a nice raise and long term contract extension. I am sure that Tech fans far and wide support the team as they go out and win one for Chan. Long live the coach.

Damn Dr. T, you’re coming out swinging some hay makers. The Can Chan’s will be gunning for you. I for one, think winning and enhancing our bowl bid should be enough with the possibility of something extra on the line for playing Miami.

I like your attitude.

If Chan can win the last 2 of 3, 3 0f 3, or even upset one of the big boys that are left, he will deserve a little credit.

He’ll deserve all the Can Chan “fans” kissing his feet and begging for forgivness.

You would hope they would be men enough to give the man credit if the season ends in an 8-3 or 9-2.

GT 1 of 8 teams to go bowling 8 years in a row. GT, UGA, FSU, FL, Michigan, Purdue, VaTech, Tennessee. Purdue is out, Tennessee is close. That may only leave 6 teams going to bowls 9 years straight. Quite an accomplishment.

Problem is, too many Silicon Valley Bowls and not enough big ones under Coach Gailey. 2 things need to happen: (1) GT improve, which Chan can do starting this year and build on, (2) ACC negotiate better bowls. We have BCS, Gator, Peach then it drops off. We added 3 great teams but not another great bowl. SEC doesn’t see the Peach until number 5.

As long as Coach Gailey gets a little better every year, I’m behind him. I want a guy who will stay once he’s good, not have a fluke year and leave. So let’s keep giving him a Chan(ce).

If he is man enough to pull that off ,and say, beats Georgia, I’ll kiss his a* more less his feet. Hell Dr.T I might even kiss your a* too if he pulls that off.

LOL…That won’t be necessary GT. But if Chan accomplishes the above he deserves some serious penitence from the can Chan crowd.

Coach Gailey has had a formidable task on his hands since coming to Tech. And still has not had a LOSING SEASON. Not many before him can say that. O’Leary left a mess behind him for Chan to deal with. And the road ahead won’t be easy. You can bet that Tech will get something out of the NCAA investigation. 52 counts of academic fraud gets you something every day of the week. And Chan gets to deal with that too. Give the guy some credit. He’s done pretty good with the hand dealt him.

There hasn’t been any “academic fraud” much less 52 cases of it. There were errors in the registrars office that were related to tracking progress towards degrees. These resulted from new NCAA rules.

Several of those student athletes who were ineligible by NCAA standards were on track and have already graduated.

If you want to see fraud…look at South Carolina.

It really doesn’t matter. What matters is UVa is a good team and they play even better at home. Better strap it on tight.

Oh come on Chris B…..all the ineligible athletes at Nerd Central were victims of a clerical error? Get real, O’Liary was bringing in players who couldn’t do the academic work in high school and had some folks in the athletic offices covering for him. Someone pointed out that UCF was winning this year, how much do you want to bet that the NCAA investigators aren’t down in Orlando sniffing out what kind of scam Saint George is running now. I was also deeply moved by the heart warming story of Joe Hamilton returning to the Nerd Nest to continue working towards his degree. He was only there for five years before and now only needs a couple of more years to graduate. I noticed the AJC story said that he was taking calculus and I’m sure that was a misprint. According to all the Techmite apologists and excuse makers every first semester Nerd footballer is required to take calculus, quantum physics and theory of electro-magnetic transmutation. I am always impressed by the fact that Tech only recruits Rhodes Scholars while all other colleges and universities will only recruit some left over Cro-Magnon survivors who were found frozen in a cave in central Europe. Now on a serious note…I really am glad to see that Hamilton is finishing school, he was a hell of an athlete and appears to be a decent human being. Good luck to him.

To all the Can Chan brainiacs: I remember how Dean Griffin was burned-in-effegy after his first year at North Carolina……did you say fan loyalty ?

If Joe Hamilton had the Georgia Tech defense of today…he would have won at least one, if not TWO national championships. IF.

Do you really think Tech was or is Dodge City. First of all they turned themselves in. There are schools like maybe one in a state just north of here that would be tackling the administrator as he headed to the door to turn them in for such a thing. Secondly most of the subjects have graduated, a word seldom used in most major NCAA programs. I think one of the attractive things about Tech is it’s players get a fair shot at life when they pick North Ave. for their education. If we’re the problem in the NCAA they need more problems. Like the old joke goes,”if they don’t believe my name is Wagonwheel Jones they’ll never believe what my baby sister’s name is.”

Chris B…do your homework! There has indeed been 52 cases of academic fraud brought against Tech. Check it out.

GT, no one has said that Tech is a bad apple. They had a bad apple coach that created this problem for Tech. When you get charged with lack of institutional control, however, it goes a wee bit beyond the “administrative” error category. I remember this being a topic of discussion on CSS and when someone played the “admin error” card, the hosts were all over them. Jamie Dukes in particular, stated, “52 counts of academic fraud ain’t no clerical error.” That O’Liary guy may have won a few games with lots of help from the Fridge, but left a mess. And I will bet that he never coaches again at a top tier school because of his integrity issues.

OK - I must say that the course of this Blog has made me very happy. I am encouraged to see no response whatsoever to AB. I think that we should make an effort to not succumb to the baiting and provoking nature of any UGA blogger, especially AB and Spanky, to name a couple.

As for the “Acedemic Fraud” issues. Those events are in the past, whatever they really were and what caused them. Most of those involved are no longer with the Institute, either as employees or students.

It’s kind of like argueing over the “National Title” issue between UGA and Tech. That is the past and (maybe other than the past couple years) has no bearing on what the result will be this year, next year or 20 years from now. The UGA fans should be well aware of that as one week they look Golden and the next week they get beaten, mainly due to injury to a key player. Things happen and that is why they play the games every Saturday.

Dr.T, a lot of those athletes were not football players so I have a hard time placing the blame on O’Leary completely and I really do believe that some processor in the department reported the information wrong to the NCAA. I do appreciate your position and have a similar one myself on the matter of cheating and you might be right on this, but I truly believe this was so widespread into so many sports that most people don’t even know we have that cheating is not a factor. In the same breath we did lose a tennis coach in a similar situation a few years back.

By AB

Come on GT, it isn’t too hard to make yourself say the words……Tech cheated, Tech got caught, Tech apologizes and will try to avoid cheating in the future, Tech will be punished by the NCAA.

AB - Time will tell and I am sure there will be a Blog about it whenever there is resolution.

As for the topic at hand, I really hope that this team does not need any motivation to win. That is part of the recruiting process, bringing in athletes that want to win. I just hope Chan can get the right team to step onto the field each Saturday from here on out.

All I ask is that we are competitive in each of the last three games. I don’t expect to win, but I also don’t expect to look lost like we did at VT, flat like we did against Duke and NC State or uninspired. That being said, I will be cheering for them each and every week.

I think Chan has a really tough goal of hitting 7 wins this year with the games remaining. I would consider winning any of the remaining games significant upsets. If we had beaten NC State, then Chan would be under the safety of the 7 win mark. I hope we do win at least one more, but I’m not holding my breath. Tech does have a history of an upset here and there though, so we might pull out 7. 7 isn’t anything to be excited about in general, but it’s progress for us at this stage of the game.

Go Jackets!

Build Build Build…and let’s get National Championship number 5 in the next few years with dedication and determination!

By GTVegas

Yea, if you look at the seven win goal, it can be summarized as “win the six that you should and eek out an upset in one of the remaining four.” It has now become “get two upsets out of the four” which is a much more monumental task.

Face it Jackets, you are still the best of the old ACC and that is as good as it will ever get. You are as good as UVA, but you have had little success in C’ville, Miami cleans your clock in the Orange Bowl, and it’s soon to be 5 losses in a row to Georgia. You are just lucky you don’t get FSU every year anymore.
