Excitement without the points
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’ll be interesting to see what kind of atmosphere there is Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
I was impressed with the crowd for the N.C. State game in the rain on a night opposite a Braves playoff game, and the sellout crowd for Clemson really got into it. But Clemson brought about 10,000 people, and it was homecoming. Wake Forest won’t travel like that, and homecoming is past.
What will it take to get Atlanta-area sports fans to realize that, even with its sputtering offense, Tech always seems to produce an exciting game?

I think the crowd will surprise us. The ACC thing is selling tickets.

It will take a marketing department with a clue… or a GT team which wins 9-10 games a year.

More consistency from the offense is definitely needed before GT can hope to draw more fans. Watching games is frustrating enough for “life-long” Jacket fans.

Probably a young, good looking, up and coming coach that has a great personality who isn’t conservative and is an excellent play caller.

Good looking? Same hairdo you had in your playing clipboard carrying) days. Excellent play caller? 3rd and how many and you run a QB sweep to the short side. Richt is Barney Fife when it comes to policing and punishing his players.

Mmmmm… Mr. KneeJERK, At least I carried a clipboard on Saturdays. My hair was perfect then, as is now. Everyone has a bad day not only in their professional life but their personal life as well. Gomer Gailey would love to be in my shoes, not to mention my hair on his head, my teeth, and oh, my health. (Let’s not forget my contract) Woof

Gailey has made some bad calls, but I’ve yet to see him call a play like the 3rd down play in Gainesville or let the clock run out by calling a running play at the goalline. Gailey is far more conservative with a lot fewer gadgets than the Athens Wrist Slapper. Both are perceived as quality people, but Gailey won’t put up with the thuggery that your feather-haired coach does. Gailey wouldn’t sell out moral character to field a program. Could Richt take the kind of student athlete required at Tech and do any better? I don’t think so

Bottom Line - go to scout.com and look at recruiting commitments. Richt has PAGES of 4 and 5 star players. Gailey has half a page of 1 and 2 stars.
Looks pretty simple to me. Few good players=no excitment=no ticket sales.
Just because they get invited to the Blue Grass Toilet Bowl, does not mean they had a good season.

Auburn beats Georgia next week and their season in down the toilet. Makes you wonder what they are doing with all those 4 and 5 star recruits.

I think the Bowden disciple had 6 or 7 that didn’t qualify academically from last years class. And that doesn’t include the one who dropped out of school who assaulted a TA during class.
But in Richt’s defense, he said that if he doesn’t sign them then somebody else will. What a guy!

Hey GT…
Can you find ONE pre-season poll or prediction article that had Georgia losing 2 or less this year?
Our season isn’t down the toilet, dude. We lost a singular game. Not two, with three more losses on the horizon like some Division 1 programs in-state. We have division and conference titles to play for, which nobody saw for Georgia this pre-season, so I think it’s a tad off-key to think our season goes “down the toilet” over one loss.
Besides, if your team can beat Auburn on the road, we will beat them at home.

You tell’em Ron! The only thing the Gnats have to look forward to every year is playing the Dawgs, then when its over it’s back to reality. With Miami, Va.Tech, Fla. ST and all the others, Tech will never stand much of a chance.

UGA’s record is not a big surprise. How crappy the SEC is this year surprised some pollsters. I mean, wasn’t UT a Top 5 pre-season team? Pre-season rankings mean nothing. What “good” victory has UGA had this year? Their best is Tennessee and everybody is beating Tennessee. By the way, some guys from the “Git-R-Dun” Conference were pretty dadgum sure the Vols were going to knock off Notre Dame today.

UGA turning backflips in excitement for winning the SEC Least is akin to the Padres celebrating winning their division this year. UGA is the “least bad” team in their division this year. Yippee

Sorry for the late response KneeJERK. Yea, I’ll admit that was pretty silly in JAX. I just lost my mindset for a few. For some strange reason I kept thinking about how goofy acting Reggie Ball was last year after being knocked senseless several times, and how Gomer just left him in the game. I take full responsibility for the lapse. WOOF!

Reggie and a very average Tech team was close to knocking off a senior filled Bulldog team with several NFL caliber players. You can get the athletes there, but why can’t you coach ‘em?

It’s like I told you before… Good days, bad days. I think my record speaks for itself. Execution is what counts, which is usually on par against Gomer. Granted you guys did beat Auburn, but where was the game plan for Va. Tech. Florida did win the game, but it was not the schalacking Beamer put on you. In my opinon, Tech should have stayed an Independent. With the exception of Miami and Va. Tech, the rest of the conference is a joke.

Talk’s talk til ya actually BEAT somebody, KneeJERK.
What’s Mark Richt’s record at Georgia? He’s lost a grand total of 12 games, smart-guy. You could add up TWO SEASONS of typical Tech football and trump that.
And, if memory serves, I don’t think ya’ll could handle Richt’s coaching when he was OC at Florida State, either.

A coupla more thoughts…
The Padres were a .500 team when they won their division. Georgia won’t finish anywhere near .500. Check your facts.
You should also check your OWN conference and it’s ability to stand up to to punditry, before casting doubts about the S.E.C. Boston College isn’t exactly lighting ‘em up, and Flawda State just lost ANOTHER conference game, and they’re STILL on course to win YOUR weak division. Meanwhile, Miami’s up 10-0 on Virginia Tech at the half. What POWERHOUSES you have.

One, two, three, four, four, four, four…this is the way math class goes on at Georgia Tech. Until they mistakingly get to 51 which automatically makes them think 7!- WOW, UGAG fans really are idiots…GO JACKETS

Your lone undefeated team couldn’t score an offensive TD against the powerhouse that is Mississippi St. Ron, you used caps and italics to say “your weak division”. Your wrong, check the divisions. We’re in the Coastal, FSU is in the Atlantic. And if you didn’t care, then why are you on the Tech blog? The point about the Padres was not their record, but they won a weak division. They were the biggest tadpole in the puddle. Richts offensive gameplans didn’t beat us when he was at FSU. His athletic Criminoles did that.
You were right though Ron. Talk’s talk til you beat somebody. So far, you’ve beaten Tennessee. Quality win. Oh, and the Virginia Tech-GT game? No excuses there. We got beat in every facet imaginable. Right down to the cheerleaders and flag corps.

Someone please explain to me why this GT board/blog is filled with such a large number UGA supporters. Are you UGA fans lives so empty that you have to spend time wondering around to other teams boards looking for something to occupy your time? But while you’re here visiting think about this stat - National Championships - GT 4, UGA 1. The game is played to win championships not run up some impressive winning percentage in a conference whose glory days have come and gone. Put that in your pipe and smoke it UGA supporters.

The reason the boards are filled with half-witted responses full of vile and vitriol towards us Techies, is that the Athletic program of the University (sic) of Georgia has far more than its fair share of non-alumni fans out there. When the name of a school is the name of a state, it inherits a ton of know-nothing fans whose rabidness overcomes any sensibility. I know and really like many UGA grads, and they are terrific supporters of their school and their school’s team. I respect them and their fandom. Its these rednecks who have never set foot in a UGA classroom that ruin the reputation of the school. Bottom line: College athletics are a program of the school, meant to entertain current and former students. If you are a football fan, and want to support a team, that’s what the Falcons are for. The bulldogs aren’t even local, idiots. The real Georgia grads don’t want you.

What’s the point of this? Attendance, right? There are more UGA alums living in Atlanta than there are GT alums living on Earth…that’s a huge hurdle right there.
Saturday showed there IS gaining interest in the GT football program.
Bobby Dodd Stadium was almost sold-out for Wake Forest. Wake Forest! When GT plays Auburn or Clemson or UGAg, of course half the stadium will be full of red or orange, it’s called supply and demand.
But there were 51,571 fans at Bobby Dodd Saturday, and 51,000 of them were rooting for the home team.
