Blogging live from UGA-Xavier

Mark Bradley

Washington, D.C. - In the 20 minutes that separated Georgia winning the SEC tournament and the announcement of the NCAA pairings, I’d pretty much decided the Bulldogs were going to Anaheim to play Stanford in Round 1. (Why? Because Georgia, owing to its tepid RPI, was apt to be a 14th seed, and Stanford, which I’d penciled in as a No. 3, would surely be placed in the only Round 1 California venue.)

I was right about the seeding, wrong about the locale.

For Georgia, that seemed a big fat break.

For today’s story about the history of No. 14 seeds, I interviewed the famous Dick Vitale, and he’s picking the Bulldogs to beat Xavier. He also said this: “I’d rather take my shot at Xavier than Louisville or Stanford.”

Louisville and Stanford (and Wisconsin, which beat Georgia this season and last) are the other No. 3 seeds. The Musketeers are good, but they’re the least imposing of that set of four. And if the Bulldogs could somehow win today, neither Purdue nor Baylor would seem impregnable in Round 2. (Baylor versus Georgia would be the Up-From-Scandal Bowl.)

But this is getting way ahead of things. The Bulldogs have to beat a No. 3 seed to stay in the tournament beyond 3 p.m. today, and I’m on record as picking them to lose. I am, as you know, often wrong. We’ll see what happens. Check back for live updates.

The Georgia Bulldogs just took the court in the 2008 NCAA tournament. And no, that’s not a sentence I thought I’d be typing. Jarvis Hayes, who was denied a chance to play in the 2003 Big Dance when the school pulled out of the postseason after Tony Cole’s revelations, is on hand, sitting in the Georgia section. So is Michael Adams, on whose lawn the angry Georgia players congregated that March. Funny how things work out.

Georgia’s overplaying defense — and its quickness — is causing X (as it’s known in Cincinnati), some problems. The Bulldogs have tipped four passes already. Look for X to run backdoors to counter this: Indeed, the Muskies already ran a nice one, but C.J. Anderson missed a layup. Score update: Tied at 11 after eight minutes.

Anybody know why Comcast isn’t showing CBS in HD anymore? The three CBS stations for March Madness all take me back to an SD signal - and then the high 800 channels aren’t even carrying the Georgia-Xavier game, to be able to see that game I have to go down to the analog over-the-air channel. The broadcasters are bragging about being broadcast in HD, but am I the only one NOT getting an HD signal?

(Makes me wish I faces the correct direction in my apartment to get a dish…)

Love the hustle out there - diving for lose balls, grabbing every defensive rebounds, going for steals…

And Price looks like he’s going to take this one over.

Not to say I told you so, but … Drew Lavender just scored on a backdoor cut. But Georgia looks just fine: Terrance Woodbury and Billy Humphrey have both driven for hoops, and Gaines just stole the ball and fed Jeremy Price for dunk. Dogs by six at the 7:10 TV timeout.

No CBS coverage of the game here at the moment, but the dawgs seem to be settling in. They’ll have to rebound more aggressively to have a chance - they looked a little afraid to bang around after the ball in the first few minutes.

On Comcast, the UGA game IS being played, but only on 9, not on 809, 811, or 812. (Those are the numbers in North Fulton/Alpharetta, your numbers may be different.) Essentially get off the “HD” stations (broadcasting in SD for some ungodly reason) and go to the analog station.

Kiss of death, Bradley! Why did you just give us the kiss of death? Was it because we beat Kentucky! Don’t do that!

I love the up-tempo game. This reminds me of the Dawg team that beat Wake Forest at home back in the winter. I was there, and then got to shake Dennis Felton’s hand the next day when he walked into my place of employment in Athens. Up-tempo defense all the way.

Mark, who do you think wins the other first round game we’re paying attention to this week: Baylor or Purdue? I know from a journalist standpoint, you’d want Baylor to win if we win. Baylor vs. Georgia. That story writes itself. But who do you think wins. Yes, I know you have your bracket, but opinions change.

So say theoretically UGA somehow manages to win the whole thing. Does this give support to expanding the field by doubling its size or even simply including every D1 team?

By Mark Bradley

March 20, 2008 1:12 PM | Link to this

Georgia by nine at the half, and X is clearly rattled. The Muskies couldn’t even get off a last shot before the break, and Sean Miller has burned two timeouts trying to stop Georgia’s surge. I have to report that Xavier is showing me nothing so far — Lavender has only two baskets, and Burrell has zero points — and the Bulldogs simply look like the better team. That’s another sentence I didn’t think I’d be typing.

Absolutely amazing. This looks like the team from the SEC Tournament. This looks like the Georgia team that played a good first half in most of the games this year only to fade in the second half. They had a season high 19 assists against Arkansas. They are sharing the ball again today. Looking unbeatable. It is clear that Xavier is not used to playing such a high tempo in your face defense. Up by 9 at halftime.

Go Dawgs!

By Bobby

It’s CBS’s fault, apparently. Just looked on cbs46.com and they state that the games on 46 will be different than on 46.1, 46.2, and 46.3 (46.1 being their usual digital HD signal) and that they were reconfiguring their transmissions to “maximize both quality and game selection” - i.e. removing the HD signal.

At least Georgia didn’t let me down in the first half! Go Dawgs!

thanks for the updates, Mark - CBS picked the 5-12 matchup, so you’re the lifeline for now. Looks like the dawgs have some pep. Goooo Dawgs! I have to admit that I’ve always been a “basketball is for girls” kind of person because UGA’s such a football school. But now that my dawgs are in the playoffs, I feel proud and excited for them!

Funny thing - I have both Xavier and UGA pom-pom shakers at home because I was an extra in “We Are Marshall” and was a Xavier fan in the stands…and of course my red/black one for UGA game days.

Thanks, Hoop Dawgs, for letting me say “It’s great…to be…a Georgia Bulldog” even when it’s NOT football season! :)

Dogs by 11, 15:45 left, Duncan at the line for two when play resumes. And I’m posting as fast as I can, but natural my Verizon broadband card is working unbelievably slowly. Which you’d probably figure, since I’m sitting in a building called the Verizon Center.

For all the talk about X’s guards, Gaines is clearly the best guard on the court. And Woodbury — 12 points — is making every kind of shot. Tell me again: How’d these guys go 4-12 in the conference?

Getting interesting now. Lead’s down to six, and Burrell was just called for smacking Gaines and Humphrey for pushing off within a span of 10 seconds. X in the bonus already with 12:05 remaining. Burrell makes two foul shots, his first points. Dogs by four.

By Mark Bradley

March 20, 2008 1:59 PM | Link to this

Back to back timeouts come at a propitious moment for Georgia. First Xavier called one to avoid a held ball after Dave Bliss was stripped — probably a bad move, since X has the arrow and is now down to a single timeout with 11:47 remaining — and then referee Ed Hightower called an official timeout when the shot clock didn’t reset. So Georgia gets about five minutes to gather itself, having been outscored 6-0 and having seen its lead shrink to four.

They have only called two shooting fouls again Xavier, and our guys are getting beat up. Bliss’s block was so obvious that is was ALL BALL, but the official had his hand up before the block. I HATE it when a game is decided by the guys in black and white. Georgia owned this game unitl the Zebras took over. By Hairy Dawg

March 20, 2008 2:38 PM | Link to this

Well, one of the big problems in this game was Felton’s refusal to call a timeout during that the 10-0 run that put Xavier ahead. Felton doesn’t like to use his timeouts, but Gaines was worn out (yet again) and left to wither out on the court. If you have a short bench, you have to use your timeouts. The Dawgs will be good next year, but Felton has to realize that you can’t play a game like you have depth when you don’t. The depth will be there next year, but you can’t coach what you don’t have. Anyway, congrats to the guys for gutting it out and getting to the NCAA Tournament. Bliss and Gaines deserved to be there.

Every team will have somebody blame the refs when they lose. Uga is no different. Ed Hightower is a horrible ref no matter which game he’s calling. Same goes for Teddy “Showman” Valentine.

It is as if the NCAA told the officials to make sure Georgia did not advance. The officials followed through in a very convincing fashion. Georgia had at least 6 clean bocked shots that were called fouls adding to the 50 free throws that Xavier took in the game. Gaines lying on the floor with both hands on the ball and a Xavier players foot on the ball and the officials call a jump ball. Xavier player standing out of bounds throws the ball off of Dave Bliss and they give the ball to Xavier. An obvious foul on Gaines as he drives through the lane and they call another jump ball. Bliss pins the ball against the backboard on a very clear block and another foul. Can’t say I have seen a more poorly officiated game in a long time.

Good effort Georgia. Go Dawgs!

when you drive to the hoop like X did all game you get more fouls called, as opposed to taking jumpers like UGA. Im sure the refs were to blame for that 8+ minute stretch where you guys only scored 3 points, and allowed X to go from 9 down to 3 up as well.

I thought that UGA played a phenomenal game, withstanding disgusting calls by the refs and hilarious and ridiculous remarks by the commentators. The fact that a mediocre team at best, A 4-12 TEAM IN A SUB-PAR SEC CONFERENCE, nearly pulled out an upset against a 3 seed is almost laughable. The fact that Xavier was in the bonus with 12 minutes left should say something about the officiating. And while UGA let it slip, 1/3 of Xavier’s points came from free throws. So to all you Tech fans and Florida fans who are living pipe dreams this year and watching the tourney from home, I hope you don’t have the stones to get on here and put down UGA for one of the most remarkable runs in SEC history. I don’t want to hear any more criticism of Tech about ref whining, OK? I guess the refs did a good job in the first half when things were going well, right?

Having said that, congratulations to UGA for an incredible finish to the season. I didn’t like watching you cut down our nets, but you guys certainly deserved it. I think Felton will build on this. When you are outscored 25-3 from the FT line in the second half you really only have yourselves to blame.

Not enough penetration out of UGA —credit a lot of that to good defense, but also blame UGA for not doing a better job of getting to the line.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHDDDDDDDDDD I was pulling my hair out watching the SEC tournament and now this - Just plain F’n ugly basketball. No wonder you have a hard time getting recruits in basketball. Who would want to play for a team that can only score 60 something points a game (Oh yea, I forgot, you are a defensive team :)

Sorry for the delay. My broadband card went south and I’m borrowing Tony Barnhart’s computer.

Georgia lost by 12, as you surely know by now. X simply wore the Bulldogs down, outscoring them 33-15 over the last 13 minutes. We all figured something like that was going to happen last week, but it didn’t. It did here.

At the end, some Georgia fans were yelling at Burrell, “The refs gave you the game!” (They didn’t, by the way. Apart from those two calls mentioned above, the officiating seemed OK. The free-throw differential came because X worked the ball inside more in the second half.) Burrell simply smiled. He did, however, go out of his way to shake Gaines’ hand as the splendid guard took his exit with 6.6 seconds left. And well Burrell should have — Gaines handled him all day.

In all, a great effort by Georgia. But at the end we saw the difference between a No. 3 and a No. 14. And we also saw how wrong-headed it is to make predictions with 10 minutes gone in the first half, which I do all the time. But this is the first time such a pronouncement has gotten posted.

Thanks for participating, one and all. Off to do interviews now.

There are more posters here telling us not to complain about the refs than there are poster complaining about the refs. That makes it pretty clear that everybody watching the game knows the refs were awful and they were.

Dawg’s should have went inside more in the second half. Jackson couldn’t seem to find the basket and I think that caused them to stop feeding it to him. Should have kept getting it in there. I don’t think that the refs would have called any more fouls against Xavier had Georgia pounded it inside but it may have led to some easy baskets.

The Refs ruined what started off as a very entertaining game. And had they not ruined it and Georgia still lost I would not have a bitter taste in my mouth. It would be easier to swallow if Xavier had won it without the help of the refs.

You could feel it falling apart halfway through the second half. But I found it a bit odd that every block, graze, and awkward eye towards an Xavier player’s direction resulted in a foul. Meanwhile, UGA players were being knocked to the ground left and right and no whistles were to be heard. Very strange….

CHASE

Yes you were lucky to be here - any team that only wins 4 conf games in the entire year and equals that amount in the tournament is a LUCKY team. Double LUCKY that you do not have to even play 1 ranked team in the tournament. TRIPLE LUCKY in that all the close and OT games went your way.

You are ignorant about basketball if you think playing 2 games in a day is a huge deal. Teams that have all-american and summer league stars play up to 4 games in a day (against teams that may have only played 1 or 2 games in that same day).

You say CINCY is pathetic - you obviously don’t have a clue about my city. I used to live in GA and work from Covington to Social Circle to Athens and trust me Athens is pathetic…. oh and INBREDS are a plenty along that stretch.

And for those of you complaining about the fouls - why don’t you listen to your own Mark Bradley - who said the game was fair except for maybe 1 or 2 calls.

How many of those fouls came at the end of the game, how many of those fouls came because you were too slow and too tired?

Tennessee is the only good team in the SEC - you guys were lucky not to meet them and just plain LUCKY - punk.

OK, I get it that Xavier was more aggressive with the ball and that Georgia should’ve driven more to draw more fouls. But Xavier was 2-of-4 from the stripe in the first half and TWENTY-FIVE-FOR-TWENTY-NINE in the second half. Georgia was 0-for-0 in the 1st and 2-4 in the 2nd. It seemed like two completely different games, dictated by the officials. That’s all.

Xavier did do a good job of rotating in and out but clearly every aggressive play by Xavier was rewarded by the refs and we were penalized for aggressive play-we did seem tired throughout 2nd half but the entire dynamic of the game changed once the refs started blowing the whistles-my only beef with UGA is they need to learn to DUNK the ball

Xavier came in averaging 22 free throws per game and they went to the line 29 times in the second half alone, that’s almost 1 1/2 points per minute from the line. No way “well, that’s how Xavier’s been doing it all season.” I really do hate to say it, but Xavier, you did not play a great game and you did not deserve to win that game the way you did. Some of you douchebags really hate UGA. I am proud of the DAWGS and the way they finished the season, even though they coulddn’t get it done today. By the way south georgia rules, go to he11. I was in Moultrie last weekend and south GA sucks.

The game came down to Woodbury’s trey ringing out. The shot goes in, the Dawgs have a fighting chance. Tough break, Terence but you’ve really stepped up as the season wound down. Then Corey misses the front end of a 1-1. I don’t fault him, though, because he made a good play to get the rebound. He’s another fighter. It was closer than the final score; but, look, no one would’ve thought we could’ve gotten there in the first place, much less make Xavier work that hard to pull out a win. Hats off to the Musketeers, they have more class than the X fans who get on this board to brag. X was fortunate to escape but the Dawgs will be back. I couldn’t be more proud of them- they gave us everything they had. Thanks Yata and Steve for 4 tough years. We’ll see you at the celebrations next year. Go Dawgs! Never give up! Never give up! Never give up!

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmmmmmmm Scooter11……. and many other fans on here.

How come when someone tells the truth and hurts your feelings, you say they are a Georgia Tech fan?

Again, CLUELESS people - I don’t give a rats a* about Georgia Tech - we didn’t play them we played you. I only got on this board before and after to tell you that you sorry rednecks would lose. I am a Xavier fan, have Season Tickets to CINTAS and am there every game. What about you - are you at every home game for your sorry Georgia team, or are you just on the bandwagon.

GT sucks as bad as Georgia, it is just that in my experience when living there that UGA fans were the most obnoxious fans. You think the Pig Sh*T that is on your “Woody” doesn’t stink, but newsflash - NOBODY outside the state of Georgia cares about your basketball or football team.

And Tim my man - you know more about fat ugly chicks than I do … heck you have probably expanded your experience to livestock (hopefully they weren’t drugged too).

Maybe you should sit on your post or whatever it is you sit on for a while before you hit submit after calling someone spineless - just pretty embarrasing for you when you post something like that and the post right before yours makes you look like an idiot….

I do agree with you on the Rev. Wright issue - he is a racist, but so are most UGA fans…. That is why I am back up here if you want to know the truth. If it weren’t for football and basketball greed I would not be surprised if the “undercover racists” at UGA would allow any African Americans at the school. Sad but true.

UGA Sux - Go Obama!

Good point Matt—have you ever noticed how many of these classless schools and their fans claim to be our rivals … I doubt anyone in the country has as many football “rivals” as UGA. Makes it interesting doesn’t it … Let’s think about those Rivals … Tech, I think you need to win at least one in seven to claim rival status, FLA, despite recent history we still own them … TN and AU, yes, they are great rivalries but notice they are not on here celebrating our bball loss today! Nor is Alabama! Never thought I’d lump tech and the gators in the same paragraph but, seems appropriate …

Xavier deserved to win the game, but the refs certainly helped ‘em out in the second half. Then again, if you go back to the SEC Tournament, the Dawgs had a ton of fouls called (especially in the first half of the Miss. State game) against them and still managed to overcome it. I think the Dawgs played defense the way they had to play it today. They just didn’t get any breaks and couldn’t run any offense when it mattered. Still, this NCAA appearance is something to build on. Everybody except for Gaines and Bliss should be back.

The Dawgs had a great SEC tourney run, but they still didn’t deserve to go to the big dance. Granted, they backed into the field of 65 because they suddenly hit a hot streak and the rules say if you win your conference tourney, you go to the dnace. However, their overall and conference record was not worthy of entry. I’ll give them credit for the four-game run, but Felton & Co. have a long way to go. If Felton can stop recruiting marginal athletes and sign players who can stay in school and behave in a responsible manner (May I suggest he make a visit to Coach K at Duke to learn how to recruit talented and smart players), he might be able to field consistent teams. I’m not convinced Felton is the answer, but after Harrick trashed the program, who else would want to coach hoops at football crazy UGA but an up and coming coach at a smaller program. I believe Mike Adams’ “yes boy” athletic director Damon Evans was on the verge of canning Felton at the end of the season. But the Dawgs actually put together a string of consecutive victories, made it to the big dance as opposed to the NIT and now makes it difficult for Evans to fire Felton. Regarding today’s game, Xavier was the better team. Sure UGA got shafted on the foul call ratio, and the officials were apparently watching a different game than the rest of us, but they had a good tourney ride. Now it’s time to focus on next year and see where Felton leads them.

Georgia played with a lot of heart today. I give them a lot of credit. Their run through the SEC tournament was remarkable. I think they ran out of gas in the second half. They were not taking it to Xavier, and their shooting was off.

For those who say that Georgia lost because of the officiating- remember- the only reason UGA is in the tournament is because of a no-call at the end of the Kentucky game where the GA player flattened that guy on the inbounds pass.

If the refs are calling a close game, you need to make adjustments. Xavier did, Georgia didn’t.

For crying out loud Dog fans, you make it hard to root for your team. In football you say you got screwed out of playing for the National Championship, now in basketball, the refs are out to get you. It’s all a conspiracy to keep UGA down.

I try to root for UGA sports, but the fans are ridiculous

Back again. As you might have guessed, the Georgia players and Dennis Felton weren’t thrilled with the officiating, but the prevailing mood was — as it should be — a deep sense of pride at what they’d accomplished. They’d played their way into the NCAA tournament and acquitted themselves nobly once there. (Unlike, say, Baylor, which trails Purdue by 19 as I type.)

The game changed on six possessions around the eight-minute mark, when Georgia made two turnovers and missed two shots and Xavier scored eight points in transition, going from five down to three up. That, I’m sorry to report, is how quickly a game going right can go all wrong.

But let’s be honest here: Eight days ago, who among us would have thought Georgia would be involved in any sort of postseason tournament, let alone the only one that matters, let alone leading a No. 3 seed after 32 minutes. It’s a shame the Bulldogs finally had to lose, but there was no shame in losing.

Maybe I was watching an entirely different game from all of these people complaining about the refs. In the 2nd half, Xavier drove the ball inside on almost every possession, hit their free throws, and UGA just couldn’t stop it. But instead of doing the same, UGA just settled for jump shots after that. A spirited effort, but no more dreaming. I can’t stand anything having to do with UGA, but they played a great game for a quarter and a half. It was a miracle that they got to the tourney in the first place.

Let me answer the questions posed about the officiating: I thought Georgia got two really horrible calls — the Bliss block and the Gaines tieup, both discussed above — but other than that I thought the refs were OK. Not great, but OK. And 12 of Xavier’s 33 free throws came over the last 1:45. (It made 10 of those, which is what a good team is supposed to do.)

I thought Georgia lost the game when it lost the lead around the eight-minute mark, and there wasn’t a bad call involved in that six-possession sequence. So long as an underdog can stay ahead, the pressure on the favorite ratchets up. The Bulldogs almost got where they needed to go; they just fell eight minutes short. It happens.

I’d like to congratulate the Georgia team on a terrific run in the SEC tournament and for an outstanding effort in today’s game.

Georgia outplayed Xavier in the first half, and for a good portion of the second.

I do believe that because of the short bench Georgia had that they got tired in the second half and were not nearly as effective. Xavier had fresher legs and a deeper bench.

It showed in rebounding and a lot of GA’s shots coming up short. And I think it really effected Gaines’ game. I was surprised that Felton didn’t use Swansey or someone else a little more to give Gaines a breather.

I know there have been some Xavier fans- or those pretending to be Xavier fans on this board talking trash. For them I apologize.

Congratulations to Coach Felton and the UGA team on a great run in the last couple of days and for sticking through a rough season.

It wasn’t the fouls called on us that I objected to ( at least not all of them ), but rather the lack of calls ( on what seemed obvious fouls ) against X. For instance, one must be “Elastic Man” to acheive a jump ball ( without fouling ) when reaching over the shoulder of someone of Yata’s height.

For Stockbridge Dawg: Please remove the “Dawg” from your name. If you are truly a Dawg, there are no irrelevant sports. If “there’s a Dawg in the fight”, then it is always relevant to a true Dawg.

Surely not too many people had high hopes on a team that played as poorly during the regular season as the Dogs did. They got to go to the “Big Dance”—there must be a dozen or so college teams in the country who did not get to go, right? Can anyone name them?

Here are some facts about your school:

(1) 99% of the U.S. population has NEVER heard of your university, and most would not even know it’s a school.

(2) 99% of the U.S. population doesn’t even know how to pronounce Xavier correctly.

(3) Georgia is the 59th best National Univerisy in the Country according to US News and World Report. You’re not even ranked in this category.

(4) And football? Shut the fvck up!!Xavier doesn’t even have a football team, not even a Division II or NAIA football team.

(5) You’re “Mascot” is a Musketeer. Sorta like Disney’s The Three Musketeers. Enough said.

The worst regular season basketball team in the SEC was able to lead you by 11 at one point in the game, and stayed close until the very end - and you’re the 12th ranked team in the country??!! You should just be happy you won the game, and hope you can find a way to win the next one, which is not very likely after the way Georgia almost beat you.

Are you kidding me that the officiating was ok? We absolutely got HOSED. I have watched the game again with slowing and stopping it and I challenge you to do the same and then make the same comment!

Understand that I remain extremely proud of this team and what they accomplished. And I have no false illusion that they are good enough to go deep in the tournament. However, to lose like this to a team they clearly outplayed is frustrating.

Their player throws a ball off Bliss when they are both out of bounds and they give it to X. Duncan absolutely bulls his way on the court which results as a foul on us on their end and a no call on our end. There is not enough room to go on and on about the calls but they are legion. The discrepancy about fouls called is unbelievable. Watch it and then post.

Again, I realize their days were numbered. I just didn’t expect it like this. A tip of the cap to Xavier with their free throw shooting. That is the best performance I have seen this year.

Go Dawgs!

1st of all without counting the last 1:00 minute or so when 12 FT’s were attempted by Xavier that difference is still to great (21-5). I will agree that when Gaines and Bliss don’t get to the foul line even once, something might be a little off.But lets not harp on the officials, we simply went cold in the 2nd half and could not get the big shots to fall. Hey Tim,

I stand corrected, you are not an inbred… you just have an incredible imagination. You da man!!! Smile a little patty cake - you would definitely beat us in football. You would definitely loose in any one on one (We do UFC here in Cincy just ask my buddy Rich …. ) - I am easy to find on facebook - send me your email or post it here if you wish. Let’s go have some beers.

Hey Bulldog1964,

I see we have a difference in perspective.

You say I have bitterness and hate for normal people. (Acutally “Freud” it is fear…. don’t like seeing bed sheets used as clothing moving in my direction).

However, I am referring to racist, redneck, inbreds which I guess are “normal” people in your world.

Just because I am an intelligent black man does not give you permission to use the classic “monkey” reference. Case and point.

And to “Jimmy” Dean the sausage playa….. Hoops is an afterthought to you like you said…Football is where you “woof” “woof” for lack of a more intellectual term.

Basketball is our thing here at Xavier - the sad thing is that we are just a little tiny school that shouldn’t be able to beat the MIGHTY SEC CHUMPS - I mean, you beat the likes of powerful ARKANSAS, KENTUCKY (one and done in by another Yankee School today), , and MISSISSIPPI So I may be obnoxious about Basketball, but it is not near as obnoxious as UGA fans are about football - Now lets start the National Championship Football talk again like you have the past 37 years!!!!

And hey “XU Fan in Atlanta”… or should it be “XU Fain in Atlanta”.

Let’s show everybody here that you are a real fan by telling them what XU and BC basketball teams have in common. Any XU fan should know this without even blinking….

To which MVP replied: “Daledog(???} you want some cheese with that whine?”

Can you imagine what it’s like to be this person? That’s an actual person who is alive right now typing on his keyboard. No no, MVP, you got me, I surrender. Very clever substituting “wine” with “whine.” Good luck.

2-Classy, southern, respectful people are never going to entertain people like yourself who approach a public forum with disgusting language and references.

You need some help dude . . . seriously … I’d recommend a counselor, or therapist, or something. Perhaps you were abused as a child. If so, I’m sincerely sorry but your bitterness stems from something obviously larger and stronger than you. I’ll pass on that beer but will say a prayer for you.

Yeah. Lets not harp on the officials. less than 2 minutes in the game, GA down by three needs a stop. They call a TOUCH foul on Gaines 20 feet from the basket, that had zero effect on the player dribbling. ALL day they bumped, hand checked, and mugged Gaines and they never called a thing. Two free throws and that was the end of the game for all intents and purposes.

No one in there right mind could look at the free throws attempted by both squads in the first 39 minutes and say that it was a reasonably officiated game.

As a Jacket Fan, I wanted to give props to UGA for making it as far as you did. Honestly, I was hoping my Jackets would do the same thing.

Couple of comments… XavierNut, whether your posts are serious or not I think they are hilarious albeit a bit raw.

It is funny for someone to call out the Bulldogs from time to time as they are not used to that; however, I must make a couple of points in their defense.

Although your team is better than UGA, I don’t see you having much glory beyond this.

According to the latest strength of schedule ratings: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkc0708.htm

Your Xavier team had the 74th toughest schedule and only played 2 top 25 teams this year.

UGA had the 46th toughest schedule, so their record would have been better with your schedule.

Even though we had a lapse in Basketball this year (due to 2 freshman leaving for the NBA) and we did regrettingly had a lapse against UGA… we would have wiped Xavier off the court if we had made it.

Unfortunately an EXTREMELY TOUGH schedule and 1 game under .500 in the ACC cost us.

BTW, Georgia Tech had the 2nd Toughest Schedule in College Basketball this year, so things could’ve been different if we would have had a Xavier schedule, eh?

Anyway, Xaviernut - all people in Georgia aren’t rednecks (not even all UGA fans)… but they probably have more rednecks than we do tekkies at Tech.

Congrats UGA - Don’t know if you are, but I am glad to see that Felton will remain with the program.

Xaviernut - time for you to get off this board - I may dislike UGA as much as you do, but when it comes to the State of Georgia and the South, this GT fan will stand with the UGA fans.

Tim,

I probably gave you too much credit….as you said….. you are not a “doctor” of anything. Thanks for the education there Sherlock, but you are stating the obvious… I did not say the term medical doctor now did I. You do know that say ……someone with a Doctorate in Education is properly referred to as Dr. John Brown a.k.a. “Doctor” John Brown, right….. It’s not just “MD’s” that are called “Doctor”.

Thanks for calling me out as being classless - you are the essence of class with your high minded “fat ugly women” and “a*****” language. I will try to move up to your level.

I am what I am my man - maybe you ought to not be a hypocrite - that is not UGA like.

We just got to face it—-UGA is not and will never be a basketball or football school. You have to have more white players with brains like Duke in BB and Michigan in FB to be a real winner. After watching the game today, I believe that the NCAA has the same problem as the NBA with corrupt officials being on the take. Georgia was up by nine at the half and was holding its lead for the first third or so of the second half. They had no reason to start fouling Xavier.

In fact, it was just the opposite. Xavier was the team that had plenty of incentive to foul Georgia, and that is exactly what they were doing. The guy covering Gaines was mugging him all over the court. For some reason, the refs weren’t calling fouls on any of it.

Yet all of a sudden, the refs started calling fouls on Georgia right and left. I haven’t seen the stats on foul shots attempted and made for each team, but I know that the difference was enormous with five minutes left in the game. Georgia would have been looking at Xavier in their rearview mirror if it had not been for the refs. There was no way they could overcome the huge disparity in fouls being called against the two teams.

How come a foul for reaching around was not called on the guy that got the jump ball call on Gaines late in the second half? It seemed to me that he only got one hand on the ball for about a millisecond, so how can that be called a jump ball?

When the Xavier player was going after the ball trying to keep it from going out of bounds and threw it back at Bliss, they were both already out of bounds. That should have been Georgia’s ball.

These were just two of the many egregious calls made by this officiating crew. Something is wrong when the officials are the determining factor in such an important game by this wide of a margin.

And another thing. Does the NCAA have a rule that basketball announcers may not say anything criticizing the refs? The guys who called this game did not once question any of the bad calls that were piling up right and left.

The entire second half was really smelly. Even though it is unlikely to do any good, Felton and his staff should review the game, prepare a video containing clips of some of the obviously erroneous calls by the refs and send it to the NAACP.

By Don

March 20, 2008 7:09 PM | Link to this

Georgia blocked about 10 shots cleanly and a foul was called on all but two of them. Jump ball called when Gaines was lying on the floor and had two hands on the ball trying to call a time out and the Xavier player had a foot on the ball. Another jump ball called when Gaines was driving into the lane and the Xavier player climbed over his back. Xavier player standing out of bounds bangs the ball off Bliss’ leg and they give the ball to Xavier. The Refs were bad and that is the bottom line. Could have and probably would have been a nail bitter down the last second had the refs not took over the game. If classy Felton said something about it, even briefly, then it was bad. Not just one or two calls but at least a dozen.

With that said, Georgia did well and did run out of gas in the final 10 minutes. Just didn’t seem to have the energy to run the offense down the stretch. Would have loved to see the players decide the outcome of this game instead of the refs.

From a faithful (not fair weather/bandwagon) Bulldog Basketball fan, Go Dawgs!

Of course I’m glad we came out on top, but I have to say Georgia put up a damn good fight and could have won that game. The officiating was terrible. AND like most fans, I don;t want to win a game because of bad officiating, but I have to admit that bad calls were made a critical times in the second half that affected momentum, which I believe affected the outcome. I’ll take the win, but you guys have a reason to be p** about the officiating.

Someone may already have commented on this. However, the free throw numbers were 33 attempted and 27 made by Xavier and 5 attempted and 3 made by Georgia. The attempts were +28 and the points +24 in favor of Xavier. There aren’t many teams that could overcome numbers like that. Not only were the extra points scored by Xavier overwhelmingly the deciding factor in the game, but the fouls being called against the Dogs at crucial times throughout the last two-thirds of the second half were having a disruptive and ultimately demoralizing effect on the UGA players.

Mark Bradley, Do you really believe only 2 bad calls? The oficials did well in the first half and let them play. But EVERY shot that Ga blocked in the second half was called a foul, I repeat EVERY shot, and we blocked quiet a few.During that same time they blocked 4 or 5 with no fouls called, and BTW they probably shouldn’t have been called either.I do believe they greatly turned up the intensity on defense, they were all over our guys!I commend them on that. They made our offense look bad, which is not hard to do at times, but anytime you play that aggresive you foul alot and its a shame the officials were not calling any fouls for all that aggresive play. But yet at the end of the game, after they’ve bumped, grabbed, and knocked around our guys ,in the words of TV guys they called that touch foul on Gaines.I dont know the numbers but can anyone tell me how many fouls were called in the first half, and how many in the second?Because the second half was called totally different.2 bad calls?what a joke.

Take it from someone that was there, the officiating in the UGA/Xavier game and then in the Baylor/Purdue game was like watching two totally different sports. Actually, the poor officiating in the UGA game came primarily from one official. I really hate to cry foul, but my son, who is a freshman at Tennessee, said he felt sick at his stomach from the poor officiating. Also, after watching Purdue I don’t think Xavier, or UGA for that matter, will make it past Saturday. Great job DAWGS. We are proud of you and I personally am glad that I finally got to see the DAWGS play in my area (Northern VA/DC). From an X fan …

First, congrats to Georgia on a great SEC tournament and hard fought NCAA game.

Second, I mostly only read M Bradley’s comments but I did catch a few others and let me say XavierNut is a nut and is not typical of X fans - if he really is one and is not some SEC GA hater trying to stir the pot.

Third, the refs did not call a bad game. X got to the free throw line so much more because they were more agressive taking it to the hoop and because GA was fouling at the end. The Bliss foul on Duncan may have been a bad call, but there weren’t many.
