Bibby will be fine

Terence Moore

These things happen. New guy comes to town. Hasn’t had time to get acclimated to a different system. Takes the court on the road in a hostile environment.

I mean, those were the suddenly rejuvenated Los Angeles Lakers who clobbered the Hawks Tuesday night at Staples Center.

Mike Bibby will be fine. It just might not be any time soon, especially with the Hawks playing his former Kings teammates Wednesday night in Sacramento and closing out a monster road trip with stops at Golden State, Utah and San Antonio.

Let’s put this into perspective. Chances are, the mostly stationary Shaquille O’Neal will struggle at the start with Phoenix’s approach of running before running some more. He makes his debut Wednesday night at home with the Suns against his old Lakers team.

Then there is Jason Kidd seeking to become the same engine with the Dallas Mavericks that he was for years with the New Jersey Nets. He also plays with his new team Wednesday night when the Mavericks face the Hornets in New Orleans.

The difference for O’Neal and Kidd is that they’re joining established rosters. The Hawks are the youngest team in the NBA again. Still, you would prefer that your new point guard with the fancy resume finish his first game with more than five points and a heel injury in 16 minutes.

If nothing else, a gimpy Bibby is better than a healthy Anthony Johnson or an even healthier Tyronn Lue.

I agree Terence. I think for this “abandon ship” mentality to set in place after ONE GAME is crazy to read. I think they will be fine. Now about Mike Woodson…….

The Hawks need better leadership…its obvious. When you can beat very good teams, and then turn around and lose to the Bobcats, it points to a lack of an ongoing motivational tactic. Get a veteran coach in here…like Larry Brown. Everyone (coaches and players) can’t be green. SOMEONE has to know the ropes.

This trade should never have been necessary. Thanks Atlanta Hawks management and scouting!

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA……

Sure he will be fine….so will Speedy at some point, and when he finishes taking us to the cleaners, all will be just where we need to be…….

At the bottom of the league as ALWAYS

I am truly impressed by the front office……trade a first rounder, a proven back up point with attitude, two other players, AND a second round draft choice……..

All for a guy like Speedy who is HURT !

Great JOB HAWKS…!

Well put TM and hawksfan. I told everyone not to get over excited about the deal because of the murderer’s row schedule Atlanta has to deal with. Chances are they will not win a game on this trip if they don’t win tonight. Thanks to the woefully Eastern Conference though they’ll still have a chance. Let’s be patient people.

Wow…just what we needed!! I watched some of the game after i got home from work and what a disaster it was. You knew the Lakers would be ready to play after getting beat here but to be down by 40 at halftime was an embarrassment. I just hope Bibby doesn’t miss any significant time. As far as Woody is concerned we all know his time is running out….miss the playoffs and the ASG needs to grow a set and get rid of him plain and simple!!!

I think what is at issue here is Bibby’s role. To be a playoff team we need more from him than one might expect. We need him to come in and be a leader, to initiate the half court offense and to essentially take the reigns of this entire team. He needs to be vocal and aggressive and keep the ball out of Joe Johnsons hands at the top of the key. He has the control. With Bibby now goes the team, so hopefully he can rise up and take us with him.

Mike will be fine and over the next few years will groom Acie to replace him, but like I did with Maurice Cheeks in Philly. By the way, Maurice might be a good coach for you guys.

Okay..lets get off the goodbye Woody train. He did not sign Speedy, he didn’t draft all those guys at the same position, as Parcells would say, he did not buy the groceries. Woody actually has done a good job with not much to play with. The last coach for us who had some cards in the deck was Lenny “most wins and losses” Wilkins, who did nothing, but trade away the greatest player to ever where a Hawks uniform. We haven’t been right since. This roster is better with Bibby, but still unbalanced, why did we sign Richardson, when we desperately need a Big Man. and I’m witcha Peter, all this trouble for Speedy, he should be put on a wanted posted, he has stole every dime.

How about Marvin and Speedy to Washington for Hayward, Songaila, and a pick? This would add some beef for the middle and clear the way for Horford and give us a 2nd teer center.

By Jesse

Bibby will be fine, but it’s the rest of the team we have to worry about. They looked awful last night. Bibby looked great for the first qtr. People just can’t hit open shots, hold on to the ball or make a pass. It’s awful…. and see Mike Woodson for the reason why.

Marvin for Haywood??? or Hayward??? 2nd tier or teer center??? The proposed trade above is about as good as the poster’s spelling. Marvin would be a senior in college. He will continue to get better. Why does everyone want to trade him? He is the one guy besides JJ and now Bibby who can knock down outside shots on a consistent basis.

That was absolutely brutal last night, buy hey Kobe is one of the best their is and right now his team is playing as such. Plus, I didn’t think the Lakers took to kindly the way we beat them last time. This time they were focused and were hellbent on avenging that loss. Oh yeah, is Joe Johnson okay? I was wondering how those third-degree burns were coming along today cause Kobe SCORCHED him last night. Kobe made sure there was no doubt who is on the elite level and who is NOT. As much as I like Joe, last night is proof that he is one step below the elite in this league and may always be just that and only that. I know it was Kobe, but on the offensive end where Kobe was guarding Joe, he straight shut JJ down. Joe has too many games like that to be considered in the league we, including myself at times, try to put him in. I still like Joe as a player, but I am done thinking he is going to be that guy. He is what he is now and it won’t get any better. He has peaked. There isn’t another level that he can take himself to. It’s like there’s Shareef Abdur Rahim’s 20-10 and then there’s a younger Shaq’s 20-10. Joe is Shareef, and Kobe is Shaq. Maybe the addition of Bibby can help free JJ to be that guy, but only time will tell and I hope it tells us something good. Bibby will be okay I believe cause he has undeniable, unquestioned heart and he’s a gamer. Now I just hope it’s contagious.

I mean the guy came out scoring with no hestition..Who cares if the top paid guy on the team is bench while a D-Leaguer takes his spot…I’m all for who gets the job done at that time, in that game!! I mean, we are trying to win right????

Between the early fouls, that caused Horford to sit down .Which in turn forced Woody to play Solomon jones.Who I might add has alittle less pt than speedy.Along with him being iight in the butt and inexperience. He showed no presence in the middle and little competition for LA. Compound this with Bibby out with the heel.Forces Woody to play Acie and his favorite player Salim. The defense is gone……….like 2 dollar gas;like spandex;like the twin towers(pardon the expression). Obviously we need some more parts. But in the mean time Woody got to coach. In preseason we had a couple of big men.Who were invited and performed decent.I’m looking for the bandaid not the permanent fix.

Bibby looked great, other than missing all those 3’s. He played like a point guard is supposed to play. He found the open man with his passes. I just hope he can stay healthy. We’ll see if he plays tonight or was it really just a “shoe problem,” like they said last night. To the person who said that the Hawks players need a coach to motivate them: no coach is going to motivate these guys who are paid so much more than the coach. They have to motivate themselves. J. Rich looked great hitting the 3’s. Was Woodson going for the hobo look last night? Like Smitty said, they need to put this one behind them and move on.

Any team with the laughingstock of a coach Mike Woodson is destined for failure. He’s the worst coach in the pro game in the past several years. At least now with Bibby in the lineup and still losing like always the Spirit owners will realize it and get a coach like Adelman, Van Gundy, Larry Brown or someone similar that have been available recently. How bad does Woodson have to do for you guys to take notice?????

The Hawks have proven time and time again that they’re gutless girly men. JJ leads the way. As Kobe taunted and embarrassed him he did NOTHING. NOTHING.

He and this crappy Hawks team should be sad. They sucked before Bibby got here, there will suck while Bibby is here… And they will still suck when Bibby leaves.

And you want to know why? Because they’re the Hawks. That’s who they are and that’s what they do.

My problem isn’t with Bibby. It’s with our GM and owners not getting rid of Woodson by now. They can’t be so blind to know that Woodson is nowhere near being a good NBA coach. Any other team would’ve gotten rid of him by now. The lack of effort we see from this team on the road is a sign of poor coaching. I personally think this Bibby deal was Knight trying to save his own neck. He knows that if the Hawks don’t make the playoffs this season, they have screwed themselves for a while. Josh Smith won’t resign, Josh Childress won’t resign, We will give a pretty high pick to the Suns, and we will more than likely be without a coach.

According to Terence Moore’s opinion about the Braves they haven’t won because of the lack of white players on the team. Does that apply to the Hawks not having white players on the team? Or is there a serious double standard in play here?

I understand that the Hawks aren’t expected to win many games on this west coast trip - with or without Mike Bibby - but last night’s game against the Lakers was an utter disgrace.

I don’t even know where to start. There’s no excuse for turning the ball over 19 times in the 1st half. The Lakers capitalized on every mistake that the Hawks’ sloppy play gave them.

Why was Marvin Williams on the bench for most of the game? Why was Joe Johnson’s body language saying, “We suck?” Where was the effort? Why is it, when Zaza Pachulia gets quality minutes, he stinks it up and plays like a sissy?

Because Mike Woodson is a horrible coach and an even worse motivator. It’s time. It’s time for a change. It’s time for Woodson and GM Billy Knight to go. Get the hell out of town. They’re both guilty for the dismal state of this team.

I’ve tried to stand by Woodson, but there’s no reason why the Hawks can be competitive and beat good teams - western conference teams - at home, and play this bad on the road.

I’ve never tried to stand by Knight. I won’t beat the Chris Paul and Deron Williams and Brandon Roy screw-ups into the ground. Drafting Al Horford and Josh Smith were his only good moves as a GM.

The Hawks may be young; however, they have a decent crop of talent that warrants much better results. I’ve been lucky enough to get to go to several Hawks’ games over each of the last seven seasons.

I’m tired of the losing. Tired of the medocrity. Tired of the sad excuse this city has for a professional basketball team. Atlanta Spirit - Who’s got the balls to step up and make a change?

John, You are obviously smoking crack. While Marvin hits a few jump shots every three games, he is extremely inconsistent in all aspects of his game. One area he is not inconsistent is defense. He is poor all the way around. It is apologists like you that continually bring up the “would be’s” (he’d only be senior in college…) like everyone has been saying his entire basketball life. He is NOT any near what everyone thought he would be. He has been a bust and will continue to be one. The Hawks should find a GM in the NBA with your same thinking and get the best talent for him right away!

The Hawks are mildly entertaining as they are currently made up but will never win even 50% of their games. This will not change until/if Woodson is swapped out as the coach. I’m beginning to wonder if the ownership squabble with Belkin has something to do with their reluctance to move Billy Knight and Woodson. Until steps are taken on Woodson at a minimum this team will continue to be scoffed at by the rest of the league.

Mike Bibby can’t save the Hawks

By CountDrakula

February 20, 2008 2:30 PM | Link to this

Everybody is looking at Mike Bibby as though he will be the savior for the Hawks. Sure Mike Bibby is a great acquisition but he alone cannot make the Hawks great. The Hawks will have to BUY INTO Bibbys leadership as floor general and then play cohesively as a team for the Bibby experiment to work. Keep in mind when Bibby was working his magic in Sacramento when the Kings were great and pushing the Lakers for supremecy in the Western Conference, Bibby had an incredible supporting cast of Peja Sojakovitch, Chris Webber, Bobby Jackson & company, most of whom are no longer in Sacto. If Bibby were coming to the Hawks along with those players mentioned Id say the Hawks have a chance to be good. But Bibby is here by himself with a bunch of prima donas who play inspired ONLY WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT(MORE LIKE ONCE IN A BLUE MOON) and Mike Woodsen has the unenviable task of trying to motivate millionaires to play ball. With the addition of Mike Bibby, the Hawks have enough talent to win the NBA championship in June. Only time will tell if the Hawks will as much as make the playoffs much less take the title but it sure will be interesting now that the Hawks have one the leagues premier point guards in Mike Bibby, the SKY IS NOW THE LIMIT FOR THE HAWKS!!!

Don’t blame Woody:

Your team is as good as your roster. Check out the great Chicago Bulls minus Jordan, The Knicks minus Ewing, before Lebron, the Cavs had not been good since Price,Daugherty, and Harper. See this years Miami Heat, is Pat Riley still a good coach. Coaching is relative, players win games…For all who forgot so quickly, see Manning to Tyree in the Superbowl, some stuff cannot be coached, either its there or it ain’t. Woody is as good a coach as the next guy, knows his x’s and o’s. Now I will escort Billy Knight’s azz out the door for his moves, he is the GUILTY ONE. See Jim Mora-Rich McKay, that worked out for us huh, FIRE THE GM.

everybody think they have all the answers concerning this hawks team.well if you were so smart you would be coaching or have your own teams.its easy to look at a situation and say what you think should happen, but its a different story if you were calling the shots.please start with your life,do you have that together?on a average, you would probably say yes.but keeping it real if you think about it,you would find some holes.in other words your comments you posts is just your oppinion and if you agree then post it before you comment.

It’s depressing, to see how far we’ve come or should I say fallen. I haven’t seen details of BIBBY’S contract (How much, and How long?) This reduilding program started some time ago and we seem to be not much better. What is the likelyhood of having Smith and Childress both back next year or even one of them. Both could be solid players on a good team. I guess BK can start another Rebuilding Proram.

I saw the Nuggets play the Celtics this year at a game I went to in Boston.

The Nuggets were losing 79-38 at halftime. IT WAS WORSE than what we saw last night (I live in Boston, moved there 8 years ago)…….

Why do I bring this up? Because the Nuggets are a very good team, for one, and they lost to a great team, for two…. they were on the road in Boston, for 3….so the circumstances are somewhat similar

But the real reason I bring it up is because last night the Nuggets played the Celtics in Denver for the first time since the blowout, in a rematch for the 2nd and final time this season they played each other…….. The resultS?: Denver won the game, 124-118.

Moral of the story: These things happen. We’re too talented at every position for that to be the norm, it is an abberation on the road in his first game with the guys against a great team. It happens….. EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY!
