Put Dooley statue at Sanford Stdium

Terence Moore

You can’t honor Vince Dooley enough at the University of Georgia.

That said, this is enough.

For now.

Those in charge of such things will place Dooley’s name over the portion of the UGA campus that features most of the school’s athletic facilities. They’ll also unveil a fancy statue that depicts Dooley being carried on the shoulders of two Georgia players after their national championship game following the 1980 season.

First, this is a wonderful start for somebody who coached the Bulldogs for 25 years and served as a productive athletics director at the university from 1979 to 2004. Second, more accolades for Dooley will automatically happen.

Over time, Dooley will evolve into Georgia’s Ronald Reagan, with this and that named in his honor around Athens faster than a Herschel Walker burst against Tennessee or Florida.

Here’s the only thing that should change for the moment: Put the Dooley statue at Sanford Stadium, not at the proposed Vince Dooley Athletic Complex.

Other than that, members of Georgia’s Board of Regents deserve a complimentary bark or three for their efforts.

Actually Teri, I believe it depicts Dooley being taken off the field after the win over Tech that year. But don’t let a little thing like accuracy stand in the way of another crappy column.

There have been two great college coaches in my lifetime in the state of Georgia. I’m 57 so that is a long time to go with just two. We have had coaches that have had great seasons at Tech, but Bobby Dodd is Tech and Vince Dooley is Georgia, though I think they have one in the making over there that may even top Dooley, Richt needs that national championship and that still does not erase Dooley, just means they have had two great coaches in one institution. One of the things that go into being great is the way Dooley represented that school, with dignity. I use to hate the man with a passion because he had our number so many times at Tech. All that is over now; let us, that visit the stadium at Georgia every other year, remember who got a lot of what we are seeing started; it is a spectacle even a Tech fan can appreciate. The only thing I can compare it to in this part of the country is North Carolina basketball and they just finished a museum to house their great athletic memories and named the dorm after Dean. Vince deserves no less.

Fire Adams….Dooley for PREZ!!

Yes, Dooley had a great coaching record but we can’t forget his role as AD in growing the athletic program. The man could also make a dollar go a country mile without gouging the alumni. The recognition should be at or on the stadium because of his accomplishments and to me, the most logical reason, that is where it will be the most visible to the world, including on TV. Perhaps that is why it is being put where it is….less visibilty.

To Terence, you have got it absolutely right! Mr. Adams, put your personal feelings aside and do what the majority of bulldog fans want…Put the statue at Sanford Stadium where it belongs. With all that this man has done for UGA, this should be a no-brainer. He will get his due in other ways over time, but for now please do the right thing.

Teri,

Please, for the love of China, stay away from UGA material. I admire your wanting to weigh in on a hot topic such as “Dooley vs Adams”, but we don’t care what you think. Your comments are seldom accurate and always result with you inserting your foot in your Tech-Trap.

Dawghead,

The statue does depict Dooley being carried off the field in 1980. Both Jeff Harper and Tim Morrison were members of the 1980 team.

Before you accuse anyone of being inaccurate, it’s best to check your own facts. Otherwise, you end up looking like a complete moron.

Based on Coach Dooley’s accomplishments as both a coach and AD, his name needs to be ON THE STADIUM! The guy has done more for UGA athletics than anyone else and he deserves more of an honor than just a statue in front of the stadium. I have read the comments about how UGA doesnt need a stadium name that is hyphenated and that is simply ridiculous. Some of you seriously need to put away you person wants and do what is right and have Sanford-Dooley Stadium. Coach Dooley has earned that in his many year of CONTINUED service to UGA.

As for those of you asking TM to leave UGA topics alone….your comments will only make him continue.

Dear JockChecker:

In the words of AJC UGA blogger Chimp Towers: Tim Morrison is also depicted on the statue carrying his coach on his shoulder after the Bulldogs’ regular season-ending win over Georgia Tech in 1980.

In the words of Dawghead: Actually Teri, I believe it depicts Dooley being taken off the field after the win over Tech that year. But don’t let a little thing like accuracy stand in the way of another crappy column.

OK, JockChecker, you want A-1 sauce on that crow?

Also, it might behoove you to heed your own words, to wit : “Before you accuse anyone of being inaccurate, it’s best to check your own facts. Otherwise, you end up looking like a complete moron.”

Have an awful day!

See, JockChecker, this is what Teri wrote:

The statue depicts the aftermath of the Tech game. Get it, now?

Dooley should have the footbal field named for him and it should be Vince Dooley Field at Sanford Stadium. Dooley will be remembered for longer than Admas.

TM, you are correct, Dooley needs to be honored at the Stadium, not on the other end of Lumpkin, or wherever Adams is trying to bury him. To hear Adams say we do not hyphenate here was ridiculous. How about Bryant-Denny,Vaught-Hemingway,The Dean Dome, Rupp Arena, etc.stc.Dooley deserves that recognition to be at the stadium, where 90k plus could see it on 6 or 7 weeks every fall. And to the GT fellow, your comments were very classy. My brother is a GT grad who had daughters at UGA, and he is amazed every time he goes in our stadium at the enthusiasm and spectale that is Sanford.

RabunDawg

“On the other end of Lumpkin, or wherever Adams is trying to bury him”,

happens to be next door to where they keep the National Championship Trophy he won, along with the SEC Championship trophies and every other bowl trophy and award is kept. If you ever want to see all the hardware and memorabilia that the Dawgs have accumulated over the last century or so, you’ll need to learn this information. Most every athletic building and court for playing is right there, everything except the football field, hence the idea of naming it the Dooley Athletic Complex. Hmmmm, doesn’t sound like such a bad place after all, does it? Of course, you can go to the football field every 6-7 weeks during football season only, or you can go visit, most any day of the year, where it is going.

TM Please keep anything about UGA out of your blogs. This blog scares me because you, being you, will twist anything you write about around and at some point inject race. You always do. Write about anything else but don’t pollute the Dawg Nation with your diatribe. PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE.

Reasonable compromise - Put that statue inside the stadium, right beneath UGA the Dawg and add a little water feature type thing, you know, to keep him hydrated.

They didn’t dump VD soon enough.

Granted Vince Dooley has been a very good coach, but why not leave something to be named after another deserving coach has served UGA? And a Dooley statue? Recognition of his successful career is fine, but to put him on a pedestal goes too far.

What’s the deal with statues of football coaches? Name a stadium, field, or a campus building for them, but statues? I understand even that “dad gummed” Saint Bobby has one in front of the playground he helped build and he’s not even retired yet! Man, what a crock!

By Rusty

February 14, 2008 3:31 PM | Link to this

My million dollar suggestion on the other blog: Build a bunch of statues; one of Butts, Trippi, Dooley, Russell, Sanford, and Hershel build them with their palms extended outward, set ‘em up along the DawgWalk and as the players walk through let em slap palms with all the old great ones of the past.

That idea there is like a sore Johnson… you can’t beat it.
