No stopping the Buford Bunch
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
With only the notoriously hungry Wolves of Buford’s football team pounding everything inside of Tom Riden Stadium on Saturday night more than the nasty rain over northeast Gwinnett County, this was Lombardi’s Packers against those 0-14 Buccaneers. This was The Dream Team against Angola. This was Mike Tyson in his prime against anybody.
This was unfair. Then again, no offense to Lovett — a competent but overmatched foe that was smashed early, often and brutally during what officially was the Class AA state championship game. Unofficially, this was just another scrimmage in the playoffs for a Buford bunch that had to play somebody on its home field along the way to turning “The Great Ones” into its alternative nicknames for the century.
Given that, it wasn’t surprising this game was over about the time Demetris Murray used his legs bound for South Florida to rush over 100 yards.
In the first quarter.
Speaking of “first,” Buford’s defense, which began the evening with six shutouts, held Lovett without a first down until the last two seconds of the third quarter.
Through it all, those who composed the packed and noisy cheering section for the Wolves ignored the game-long drizzle combined with a wintry chill. Instead, courtesy of Buford’s 50-0 blowout to go with its other ones during the playoffs, they marveled like everybody else over the closest thing to perfection.
“By far, this is the deepest high school football team I’ve ever seen,” said Frank Fore, entering his third decade as a television announcer for the North Metro Game of the Week. “Even during the playoffs, they’ve been ahead so much that they’ve played their B-team in the third quarter. They’ve used ninth-graders in the fourth quarter. They put in so many non-roster guys in one game that, on the air, we had to say ‘That’s No. 48’ or ‘No. 57 did that.’ They’re more potent than all of those Brookwood teams, and those Parkview teams with Jeff Francoeur.”
We can go further. How about Southwest DeKalb’s 1995 powerhouse with future UGA quarterback Quincy Carter and Olympic sprinters Terrence Trammell and Angelo Taylor? Plus, few state champions have rivaled the efficiency of Southwest Atlanta in 1973, or that of Warner Robins three years later, especially since those Demons bodyslammed everybody with Ron Simmons, a future pro wrestler.
Now this 15-0 Buford team storms into that lofty company, or maybe the Wolves surpass it. They just won it all for the fifth time overall and for the fourth time since consecutive titles in 2001 through 2003. Not only that, a fifth title for the Wolves is likely another season away.
David Watkins beamed with the thought, and not only because he is Buford’s assistant athletic director under Dexter Wood. It’s also because he was an assistant football coach under Wood when the pair helped the Wolves’ transition from a Class A contender during the 1990s to the consistently scary thing they’ve become for Class AA opponents.
“That’s what we were working toward, and with (current Buford coach) Jess Simpson in his third year, we’ve managed to stay at a high level,” said Watkins of Simpson, who also was on Wood’s staff. Now Simpson is 39-2 overall as the head guy after coaching a roster for the ages.
In addition to Murray, at least six other Buford players will become the pride of Division I-A programs, ranging from seniors Omar Hunter (Notre Dame) to Jaytee Swanson (Air Force) to TJ Pridemore (probably Georgia Tech).
Buford’s third-string nose guard (Tevin Parks) was 6-foot-6 and 311 pounds.
Alex Hunt spent the season as Murray’s backup at tailback, but Hunt still got a scholarship to Indiana.
This also was a team featuring a bunch of former Falcons as daddies. You had Buddy Curry, with son Jessel Curry. You had Scott Case, with son Kody Case. You had Tom Pridemore, with son TJ. Then, during Buford’s finale on Saturday night, with heavy drops still falling from the sky, you had somebody playing Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Who’ll Stop The Rain” over the PA system.
That’s opposed to the past, present and future cry of Buford’s opponents: “Who’ll stop the Wolves?”

Terence…actually enjoyed one of your columns. I live down here in Florida and always follow the Georgia football scene on your paper’s website. One constant…all the years I have lived in Jensen Beach…has been reading about Buford and how year in and year out they steamroll their opposition. I have always been then constantly amazed the next August when pre-season football magazines never rank the Wolves as one of the top 20 or 25 programs in the USA to watch…what with all their state titles. I dare say Buford could probably roll through most of Florida’s top teams…yet every year several Florida squads get mentioned. What is it? Do people at these magazines hate Buford or do the Wolves coaches not hype their boys enough?? They deserve some national recognition!

Howard, I may be able to answer that. Becuse Buford is a AA school with only 700 students or so it is mistakenly perceived that they would not be able to compete with the larger schools in Georgia. Nothing is farther from the truth. An example: Buford played in the Gwinnett County JV champioships this year. They beat Parview 20 -0, Grayson 42 -2, and last but not least in the championship game they beat Brookwood 39- 6. All of these are AAAAA schools whose varsity made the playoffs. You only play 11 on 11. Buford plays 30 - 35 players per game continuosly, about the same or more that the big schools play.

Buford has to be considered one of the top all-around public schools in the state, if not the nation. They offer top notch academics and their athletic department consistently performs at the highest level. They are considered to be on par with the private schools in the area.

Buford IA one of the top 3 teams in the State regardless of classification..
Lowndes AAAAA & NorthSide Warner AAAA Robbins might be the only others able to hang on the field with them.. Remember, the Wolves went to Ohio to play a AAAAA team in the Kirk Herbstreet Classic?? Whipped one of the buckeye states better teams in their own backyard!!!
This has been a very special season for the Green & Gold!!!

I’m sure they would at the very least be competitive but it would still be nice to see Buford play up because there are no competitive teams in AA. Granted, Charlton was an injury away from possibly defeating them. This is also why Buford gets no national recognition though they’ve had a record that warrants it. They have teams that would at the least be competitive in any higher classification but they choose to remain in AA and run roughshod over inferior competition. They will never be recognized nationally until they either (a) move up or (b) schedule teams higher classification teams in or out of state that are consistently competitive. Contrary to what Bulldawg Rick would have you believe, the Ohio team was not a “powerhouse”. Their record this past season and the ones prior are 2-8, 4-6, 8-4, 4-6, and 7-4, respectively. Cartersville was a great match even though they did have a down year. Everyone else aside from Charlton was not really competition for Buford. Again, I would love to see how Buford does in a higher classification and if the goal of the program is to receive some national notoriety, they should. Congratulations on the title, I wish the graduating seniors the best in their lives and I also wish the returners much success.

Can someone explain why the GHSA bracketed Charlton County and Buford to play in the 2nd round of the playoffs? Both were # 1 seeds I believe and ranked 1 & 2 throughout most of the year. The two best teams should have met in the finals. BTW, Lowndes would be favored and win over both Buford & Northside WR anytime, anywhere.

Good question, T-Bone. Even Darius Walker lived in Lawrenceville. Many of these guys pay tuition to play at Buford. Look at the 8th grade class in the middle school and see how many tuition paying students there are.

Congratulations Buford! All of the cheating has paid off. You recruit from all over gwinnett county and beat up on AA competition. If you had any guts you would have moved up in classification like Marist always does. Charlton county isn’t Lowndes or NS Warner Robins and you barely beat them. Also, your players don’t take a beating week in week out in a tough region. As for all these genius coaches, Dexter Wood did nothing great at Marietta. Jess Simpson had a stellar 0-10 record at E. Paulding. Dicky May (defensive coach) was ran off from Dacula. These coaches know football but they are not playing with the same hand dealt to other coaches. I will say this, these coaches are great recruiters. In the upcoming gwinnett all-star game, Buford has 6 players: 1 lives in Buford. Buford should be ashamed of themselves.

Yes, the AA state championship was back when Buford played Charlton. How about point out the even more amazing story Charlton has. They compete well in AA(check the last 3 previous years champions) and they don’t have the tuition paying parents that were former pro players. I doubt their are many in the county that could afford anything like that.

First of all, congratulations to the Wolves on another state title. Well-deserved, and fairly earned.
John, everybody in the state respects Charlton. We all know that there is serious football played there. But the Buford matchup wasn’t the only odd pairing in the brackets, man! Northside/Tucker would have been an awesome title gane. Roswell/P-Ridge early on and others. It’s unfortunate, but it happens every year, in every classification. No disprespect guys, Buford-Charlton WAS a great game, but please don’t turn it into woulda-coulda-shoulda. Kids get hurt all the time, it rains on some nights, sometimes the refs suck, but it’s your best 11 against theirs on any given night. Best team wins, shake hands, move on.
As for kennyg and SW, listen up. First, Buford does not “choose” to remain in AA. Look at the GHSA regs and read the school enrollment ranges. At 700 students, more or less, Buford is on the LOW end of the AA range. This is a no-brainer, even for you.
Enough (man, is THAT name appropriate!!), meme, T-bone, etc: Roids, recruiting, and refs, oh MY!!. They have to be cheating!!!! Blah, blah, freakin’ BLAH!!!! It’s always the same - everybody hates a winner. I think all you guys need to take that bunch of grapes you bought at Kroger back to customer service and exchange them for some not so sour.
Jeez, people, it’s the same tired old rants every year. The title game is barely 12 hours old as I write this, and you clowns can’t do anything except hate on a bunch of kids that went out on 15 Friday nights and kicked a* all over the state (AND in Ohio)??
I would LOVE to see a Buford/Northside game, as well as a Buford Lowndes. Great teams against great teams will always be a headliner. Don’t see it happening, though. And having seen all these trams over the last couple of years, I find myself among those who contend that the Wolves would probably come out on top against any Georgia team this year, regardless of classification.
Congrats Wolves, as well as a tip of the hat to ECI, Carver-Columbus, Northside and (ouch!!) Lowndes. A great weekend to end a great football season.
Let the hating begin.

Hey Bufordmakesmesick: Dicky May was not ran off from anywhere. He left Dacula because Head Coach Maloof was hated and miserable to work for, and all of the people he worked with and loved had moved on as well (Standard to St. Pius, Farr to Norcross). He went from Dacula to Brookwood and now to Buford. Those are not downgrades in jobs from Dacula. Coach May was loved by everyone in the Dacula community and everyone was sad to see him go, yet most understood that he no longer had the desire nor willingness to work for someone as unlikeable as Kevin Maloof especially when Maloof’s unlikability had cost him the services of other great coaches who left for other opportunities. Having played for Dicky May at Dacula, I can assure you he is one of the finest high school football coaches anywhere and you would be pressed to find anyone of any credibility to disagree with me. You can dislike Buford all you want, but you should be careful before you disparage good people and good coaches inaccurately.

I think Buford has a very good team but the one team that has had their number and is not intimidated by them is Charlton County and without the injury to region offensive player of the year Ralph Boldon, I definately think you would see the Indians as AA champions again. If everybody thinks Buford is that good invite them to play Warner Robbins or Lowndes next year in the Corky Kell Classic and lets see if they can compete with the best.

If Terence Moore thinks this Buford teams is Goliath and/or one of the greatest teams of all time, he is as stupid as I believe he is.
The Buford team when Darius Walker was a senior had a lot more speed than this years version.
The only difference beteween this team and the one that lost the last three years to Charlton County is the freshmen players. Does that mean Charlton Co. was one of the greatest ever the past three years? WOW!Thanks!, T. Moore.
Charlton County apologizes to all AJC readers that are not Buford fans. If we had not been without our top back who is committed to Purdue or we had figured out that we had the speed and athleticism to beat the Buford secondary sooner, you might not have to read this garbage.

I don’t think those upper level schools want to see Buford. They are the best high school team in the state. As far as recruiting it is amazing how clean cut and smart many of these players are. Recruited players tend to be a little less representative of a neighborhood or community. These kids seem to represent their school and high school football as a whole well. I am hearing from my friends on the sidelines working the yardsticks during some high school games this year that more and more coaches are trash mouthing and using profanity directing their comments to the opposing players and refs. You never read about this in the paper or hear an outcry from the public which as a whole are probably unaware of how bad it has gotten. I have been hearing how Dublin a team Buford beat last week may be one of the biggest examples of being out of control, but there is a majority and most teams think it is the norm so why bring one team up. Jeff Schultz the Atlanta writer was doing a number on Petrino this morning and how a mother would not want her child to play in college for a man that lies. Look around Buster and you will see most are playing for worse in their own back yard and not a word is being said about it. Maybe a little of Blank type money would loosen those lips and typewriters. In the meanwhile the way Buford conducts itself as a champion is what we need more of not less.

CARVER-COLUMBUS IS THE BIGGEST, FASTEST AND THE BEST TEAM IN ANY CLASS IN GEORGIA!!!!
THIS IS JUST OUR SECOND YEAR COMPETING IN AAA AND WE WERE UNBEATEN AND UNTIED 15-0. THIS IS COACH DELL MCGEE’S THIRD YEAR ON THE JOB. OUR FIRST YEAR IN AAA WAS 2006 AND WE WERE 12-2 AND WE MADE IT TO THE DOME. WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD THE TALENT DOWN HERE, WE JUST NEEDED A COACH. NOW THAT WE HAVE A GOOD ONE, YOU WILL BE SEEING US IN THE DOME ON A REGULAR BASIS.
YOU TALK ABOUT BUFORD’S THIRD STRING TACKLE BEING 6’6” 311… THAT TELLS ME THAT THAT KID IS BIG BODY THAT HAS NO PLAYING ABILITY. WE HAVE 6 6’3”+ 300 POUNDERS THAT PLAY AND ALL OF THEM ARE GETTING D-1 ATTENTION.
You metro Atlanta people have been breathing too much exhaust fumes.
YOU TALK ABOUT BUFORD HAVING 7 D-1 PROSPECTS… HELL, WE HAVE EIGHT THAT WILL SIGN WITH A D-1 SCHOOL THIS YEAR AND 10 THAT SHOULD SIGN WITH A D-1 SCHOOL NEXT YEAR.
I’M TELLING YOU NOW, NO TEAM IN ANY CLASS WANTS TO PLAY THIS 2007 CARVER-COLUMBUS TEAM. WE HAVE THE BIGGEST AND THE FASTEST TEAM IN THE STATE. AND, THIS AIN’T WHAT’CAH WANT!!!!
HELL, WE HAVE THE NATION’S BEST RECEIVER, EVEN THOUGH THE SPORTS WRITERS HAVE OVERLOOKED HIM, BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT HAVE SEEN JARMON FORTSON, OUR 6’3” 220 LBS., 4.4 40 YARD DASH, I AM QUITE SURE THAT YOU WILL AGREE WITH ME. AUBURN WILL BE SIGNING JARMON AND OUR BEAST OF A QB, THE 6’3” 215 LBS., 4.4, DERRON FURR. THESE GUYS ARE MEN PLAYING WITH LIL’ BOYS ON THE FIELD.
THE REASON WHY BUFORD BLEW EVERYONE OUT IS AS MR. MOORE CITED, THE COMPETITION IN AA IS NO MATCH FOR THEM. THE BIGGEST TEAMS ACROSS EACH REGION ARE IN AAA. BUFORD WOULD STRUGGLE WITH CARROLLTON, CHAMBLEE AND CAIRO ALSO. THESE TEAMS WERE JUST AS BIG AND JUST AS FAST AS CARVER.
THE ONLY TRUE WAY TO TELL IS TO PLAY THE GAME. MY CARVER-COLUMBUS TEAM WILL PLAY YOU ON THE MOON WHENEVER YOU GET READY. THIS WAS OUR FIRST TITLE, BUT IT DAMN SURE WON’T BE OUR LAST.
GO TIGERS!!!!

ANYONE CAN LOOK GOOD IF YOU HAVE A CLASS FULL OF JV SQUADS.
AND ONE OF YOU MENTIONED THE FACT THAT BUFORD’S JV PROGRAM PLAYS GRAYSON AND A FEW OTHER METRO AAAAA TEAMS… WELL, THAT DOESN’T PROVE ANYTHING EITHER SINCE THE METRO SCHOOLS ARE WEAK TOO.
YOU TALK ABOUT GOING TO OHIO AND BEATING ONE OF THEIR WEAK TEAMS… WHAT IN THE HELL DOES THAT PROVE? I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU PUT CARVER-COLUMBUS ON YOUR SCHEDULE. WE WILL PLAY EVERY YEAR AT YOUR STADIUM. IT DOESN’T MATTER WHERE WE PLAY, WE WILL KICK YOUR ARSE!!!!
OTHER THAN GOING TO OHIO AND PLAYING ONE OF THEIR WEAK TEAMS, YOU GUYS DON’T LIKE TO PLAY ON THE ROAD. MY CARVER-COLUMBUS TEAM IS BATTLE TESTED. WE DON’T CARE IF YOU BRING BIASED REF’S TO CALL THE GAME. YOU WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO STOP THE INEVITIBLE… A LOSS.

It’s nice to know that a high scool can be so good that it “makessomeonesick”. These are kids for crying out loud. Get a life.
It’s also funny to me that bufordmakesmesick can say that a school that has 4 state titles in 7 yrs. doesn’t have good coaching. It is very difficult to win one state title. Dexter Wood is a product of Bear Bryant and Jess Simpson is a product of Pat Dye. I guess they don’t know anything about building a winning program do they? If they are dealt the same cards, than what was Buford doing from 84 to 95 before this staff came in. Good High School programs are built from the ground up. Not just a flash in the pan.
Jimmy Dorsey went 4-6 this year. By your rationale, you would probably say he is not a good coach either.
You obviously don’t know anything about football. You’re probably the guy in the bleachers questioning every move the coach makes. Annoying.
Take some medicine, hope you feel better, come back next year and you’ll be sick all over again.

Hey Getitright: talk about disparaging good men and good coaches! You just successfully trashed the most respected head coach in gwinnett county. Kevin Maloof gets more out of his teams than any coach. You sound like someone who probably didn’t play much and are bitter at the head coach. Funny how Kevin Maloof took Dacula to the state semifinals 2 years ago (further than any of your Dacula teams ever went) without Dicky May. Ask the 2 Irons brothers what they think of Kevin Maloof.

Greatest ever? I would have to disagree with that claim. I remember West Rome in 1985 (also AA) finished #8 in the country. So, there goes the theory that a school of AA size can’t be noticed by the national press.
It probably had more to do with the fact that the WR team of 1985 had 11 straight shutouts against Region 7-AA (considered the toughest region in the state). Also, 8…8!! D-1 prospects on that team.
Do a little more research before you claim that a team may be the greatest of all time…they may not even be the best of all of the AA teams!

Buford is a powerhouse in football because of a well rounded program of education, facilities, coaches, parental involvement, etc. If you think recruiting is taking place conduct an investigation and bring it to light. Several years ago an investigation of that nature found illegalities with a female basketball player at Buford and the heads of two administrators rolled. I’m sure the whole system at Buford knows that being consistently at or near the top of their game keeps them under the microscope.
As the father of a Buford football player who went on to play in college I can honestly say that I have always seen Buford football played with an emphasis on sportsmanship. I recall one game when Buford played a nearby county rival they had beaten some 25 of the last 28 meetings. This other team beat Buford (at Buford) and ran wind sprints on the field after the game. The following year Buford could have run the score way up but Coach Woods didn’t.
I believe the Buford football program sets the standard for excellence in the state of Georgia

Lowndes and Buford in the Dome to start the season would be good by me. Not likely to happen though. For me it would just be one more overrated Gwinnett team left to beat. You can hardly handle Charlton’s speed, I don’t think you want to see Lowndes. A proud program like Buford getting zeroed out in the Dome would not be good for your reputation.

It’s official that Terence Moore should not be a sports columnist. How great of a team can they be with all their seniors? Where were they last season or 2005? If this is a “great” team then Charlton from 2004-2006 was “greater”. Yo seems to be one of the few sensible people on this blog. The point has been made already that Ralph Bolden did not play. If you haven’t seen him, then you don’t know what Folkston was missing. Congratulations goes to any team that can win a state championship. How many games did Moore see Buford play or any AA for that matter? From week to week, most AA teams cannot compete with AAAA or AAAAA teams. On occasions there may be an AA team that comes along with the talent and depth but not on a yearly basis. This argument should end because it is not legitimate at all.

Look, all I know is the Falcons need to go after Donovan McNabb. Its no secret that he is desparate to get out of Philly. The guy has already tasted the Superbowl pigskin once before and came up short. He wants nothing more (as a more mature and more seasoned QB) than another chance return to the Superbowl to get that Trophy. The Falcons need a legitimate QB and McNabb just needs the right team to show his true talent. McNabb would definitely light up the Dome. Finding a Head Coach won’t win games-its all about a Mike Vick replacement.

well just to let everyone know football is not the only sport at Buford High School! Tennis, Basketball, baseball, basketball, Track Golf etc. those sports can’t compete in AAA so get over yourself Buford one the Championship fair and square… why should all of the other athletes in the school suffer just because or football team is good!!! they shouldn’t! and just so you know Mr or Ms BUFORD MAKES ME SICK Buford pulled their starters with for the last series of the game when Charlton scored the touchdown with (20 seconds left) to make it 21-14 almost all of the players on the field were 2nd string even if they had there running back even their coach said after the game on the field which aparently you were not there he said and I quote “I honestly do not think that having our running back would have made a huge difference!… Ya’ll are a better football team… Buford win two more!”
Oh and most of our transfer students transfer because they are not given an oppertunity at the scholl they attend so I guess giving players a chance to make their dreams come true is a bad thing?
And Buforsd football team busts their butts year round with workouts and speed drills if some other teams would put the effort into it then maybe they would get results!

Kids want to go to Buford, they do not have to recruit, Private Schools such as Lovett are able to Recruit not Buford. Roids? Those kids put more time in the weight room than any other school in the state, maybe the southeast and they know how to play football the way it is suppose to be played fast, hard and smart.
People have been hating on Buford for years, we welcome any of the powerhouse 4 & 5 A schools to play us. That will not happen as the past has shown for many years in many sports.
Buford is the unofficial all classification Champ.
Please recognize greatness and embrace the fact that they may be the greatest High School Team ever in the State of Georgia.

About Charlton agreat team that got beat at home. That is the difference from them to Buford. Buford can and has won with players out. They are deep and that is what makes them the most complete team ever.
This is a rivalry game with Charlton and they are always close, do not ponder to much on that game as it was a rilvary road game for Buford.
Charlton maybe the 2nd best in AA, as well as the whole state.

Yo & you sheep…
Quit hating on the Wolves of Buford….
Injuries happen.. It’s a contact sport… Depth is a part of TEAM… There are teams with better individual players.. There’s not a better “Team”…
Don’t hate…
Appreciate…

Everyone needs to look at this year and not the past 3 for Charlton. This is a different team and a very deep team.
Charlton’s RB going to purdue is out, OK. Buford’s RB’s 1. South Florida recruit 2. Junior future D1 recruit, 3. Indiana recruit 4. Sophmore future D1 recruit
Buford can feel Running Back position 4 deep, that is the reason they are the most complete team.
Let it go.
2007 Buford Wolves is the best team in the State this year in any class
This is what today’s reality is not yesterday.
They can play with Lowndes, Carver, NOrthside, because of hard work, smart players, talent and discipline to do what they are being coached.
We also have a great junior class and sophmore class, but let’s focus on this team they are the best in 2007 and by some best ever.

I live in South Ga. but watched North Cobb play a couple times this year and they should be in the final top 10 rankings.

Congrats Buford. Look out next year for Charlton Co, though. This was a total rebuilding year, and they still didn’t lose all year until Buford beat them by 7, and that was without their leading rusher, returner and scorer, injured the week before.

Need some predictions from people wanting to compare the classes.
Results will help get an idea of what the high school fans think the best team in the state is.

Talk . Talk. Talk. The fact remains, Buford has a good program, a good team, and good coaches. All you player haters, QUIET!
