Blank should go get Cowher

Mark Bradley

Arthur Blank seemed in an awfully good mood for someone who’d spent Monday night talking about his imprisoned quarterback and watching his team lose its 10th game. He was kidding the AJC’s Steve Wyche about the writer’s shirt-and-tie ensemble — “It’s beginning to grow on me,” Blank said — and he’d just seen the guy he’d identified as his team’s “CEO” hold an angered and aborted media briefing. And then the rich man walked with his wife and his security chief toward the Georgia Dome’s exit, surely believing the worst had passed.

Eighteen hours later, the CEO cut and ran.

Eighteen hours later, the worst got worse.

The franchise quarterback is in prison. The coach/CEO is bound for Arkansas. Once again, the rich man has been caught unawares by the true nature of one of his employees. Once again, the long-suffering Falcons are left to wonder if anything will ever go their way again.

What makes coach Bobby Petrino’s exit even more galling is that Blank had come to trust him. If the owner ever referred to Jim Mora as the “CEO,” I missed it. Indeed, Blank in conversation almost always paired Mora with Rich McKay, and speaking with writers before Monday’s game Blank mentioned the GM only when asked about the details of Vick’s contract. In Blank’s eyes, Petrino had become the man with vision, the man with the plan. (I should confess that I also held Petrino in high esteem and am stunned that he took a hike.)

The CEO takes a salary cut to become a Hog. What does that tell us about the state of the Falcons?

It might be funny if it weren’t so sad. Say what you will about Blank, but he has poured body and soul into this franchise, and today he looks like just another rich guy with more money than sense. I wouldn’t blame him if he sold the team to the lowest bidder — would the last man in Flowery Branch turn out the lights? — but I believe he’s in it for the long haul. Alas, the haul keeps getting longer.

For the second time in 11-1/2 months, the Falcons need a coach. At this late date, they should try anything and everything. They could round up the usual suspects, Steve Mariucci chief among them. Or they could try to lure Jimmy Johnson away from Fox. Or they could pursue Rick Neuheisel, the wild card in Georgia Tech’s search. Or they could do what makes the most sense: They could hire Bill Cowher.

Question is, would Cowher, having worked for one of the best organizations in Pittsburgh, want anything to do with the franchise now seen as the absolute worst? That’s where Blank would have to be brave. He’d have to spend big, sure, but he’d also have to be willing to let his coach become the focal point. He seemed to be moving toward that with Petrino, who didn’t stick around long enough for anything to take hold.

The Falcons are no longer Vick’s team and they never quite were Petrino’s, and the Blank Method — coddling and cajoling and empowering — has stopped working. No, the owner didn’t make Vick develop a thirst for dogfights or make Petrino turn tail, but it’s the owner who must clean up after them. Blank spoke Monday of the need to move forward, and 18 hours later his coach moved out.

The next coach needs to be made of stronger stuff. The next coach needs to be tough enough to ride out the losses and bend the organization to his will. The next coach needs to come equipped with an ego and a persona as outsized as the owner’s. Half-measures won’t rescue a franchise that has become a full-blown mess.

Petrino was a bold choice that didn’t work out. Having hit what surely must be bottom, there’s no cause to get timid now. Go bigger. Get bolder. Get Bill Cowher.

Cowher is loving it because Blank will overpay because he must overpay. He’s the only choice that gives anyone any hope at this point.

Ok so I took my butt over to that horrible / miserable / depressing place called the GA Dome last night (Free ticket. I refuse to any longer support financially) to watch the game last night .. (Falcons vs. Saints). It was my first time going back to he Dome since #7 was around and it felt ……. well it felt as if someone had passed away … How can a place that was once so electrifying come to this!?!?!? It wasn’t until I got home and turned to ESPN and I saw the support from his teammates … I thought it was a classy move and LONG overdue. Mike Vick made the “modern day” Falcons. Last night was the last time they will be on the national stage for a long time. Check out the link and you will see one classic photo with Roddy White holding up his Jersey with the “FREE MIKE VICK” statement underneath. I can’t belive it came to this …..

Sure, to Atlanta fans he looks like a double-talking lying loser (which he is when he said that he didn’t know anything about the Arkansas job until Tuesday, ha!). But look at it from Arkansas point of view. Here’s a college job that they believe Petrino can handle, they call him up and say “why don’t you come here and get rid of all that Falcons crap that you inherited. Start fresh and clean.” I’m sure that message resonated with Petrino.

Mark,

It is interesting that you just name ALL WHITE coaches and did not even mention one Minority candidate. I guess the last three WHITE coaches worked out. It is apparent that this organization needs to turn its attention from the GOOD OLE BOY network and try something different. Every time some one is up for a coaching job in this city it ALWAYS has to be a big name, but this should be noted, it is not about the big name it is about integrity, leadership and someone who is held with high esteem. If Blank meant what he said about one ex-LB who currently works for the 49ers then he should get another shot.

Patrino must have had one heck of a recruiting coordinator at Louisville, because there is no way that lack of personality and insincere nature could have closed the deal with a teenager and his parents. Pat Forde at ESPN put it best that the only thing Patrino deserves from an empoyer is a 1-year contract and an ankle monitor.

skins fans up here are hoping they get cowher when gibb’s contract is up next year - wouldn’t be surprised in danny-boy makes a quick move if the falcons are going to talk with him. after all, the skins have three or four ‘head coaches’, what is more one if cower gets everything when gibbs retires again.

Go for Cowher and get Jimmy Johnson as General Manager. The Falcons front office has a credibility issue. The key players will rally around strong leadership as long as they are allowed to have an opinion and work as a team rather than a bunch of overpaid prima donnas. These guys are pros and get paid accordingly.Give them some strong leadership and let them do their jods.

So, the expected end came sooner than expected. I am amused at all of the idiots who are piling on Petrino this morning. Do I think he was a good coach? NO. Do I think he baled out on the Birds? YES. Do I blame him? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Petrino is in actuality an offensive mastermind. He was brought in as “HEAD COACH” only to cater to the franchise prima dona MV7. Well, the expected happened sooner than expected and MV7 is now where he belongs: IN JAIL. So Petrino, the offensive mastermind, was left without an offense. The only thing “offensive” about this sad situation is Arther Blank Check. He created this whole situation. He deserves the egg on his face for breakfast this morning. HE gave a thug the world. (MV7) HE gave MEAngelo the world. HE gave ALLME Crumpler the world. What he has really given is Atlanta Falcon fans the shaft. BLANK CHECK: Get off the sideline. Get out of the locker room. Get in your suite and entertain your Fortune 500 friends and let someone who knows about football run the organization. DON’T YOU EVEN GET INVOLVED IN HIRING THE COACH! Hire Dan Reeves as a special assistant to McKay and turn it all over to them. Today in Atlanta, the mettle of Petrino and Blank has been exposed. Slip back into the shadows Mr. Blank. We are tired of your circus.

Cowher would be great but Blank is no Rooney. Cowher won’t put up with MeAngelo and he won’t appreciate Blank pushing an injured star around the sideline in a wheelchair. Blank would have to fade into the background and let Cowher handle the players. Is he willing to do that?

We need a decent respectable coach in the mold of Peyton down in NO (maybe Jason Garrett fits the bill ). Of more importance to the franchise is a QB who can win (See McNabb if sooner)and a new GM who is a better talent evaluator from top to bottom. Superior talent will trump coaching expertise. As a season ticket holder forced to endure this past twelve months the only thing that would bring me back is a move to the burbs.

I semi agree with you about calling Bill Cowher or gaging his interest in the job . His reputation is deserved . In my opinion though ,it is Dan Rooney who owns the Steelers who we ought to be in contact with . They just hired their third head coach in almost 40 years . The Falcons don’t need big . They don’t need bold . They need stability . They should be looking for the next young head coach who will bring discipline & a no non sense attitude . I would rather have Mike Tomlin as Falcons head coach than Bill Cowher . He is going to be a good one & last year no one could believe he was anything more than a token minority interviewee . He will probably be the next Steeler head coach pushing 20 years on the job . That is what the Falcons could use .

By Art Twosticks.

December 12, 2007 8:42 AM | Link to this

The recommendation and desire for Cowher is flawed on multiple levels and betokens a knee-jerk reaction and ignorance of Cowher’s history. First, with the Petrino debacle so fresh, note that Cowher is himself a notorious liar: Most recently, he denied what was widely reported, i.e., he intended to resign from the Steelers following the 2006 season with 1 year left on his contract. This is precisely what he did, still owing the Rooneys 1 more year of service. He blindsided the Steelers with his purchase of a palatial North carolina estate subsequent to winning the Super Bowl. his wife and daughter left Pittsburgh, and he visited them multiple times during the 2006 season. Do you want someone whose residence in Atlanta is a rented condo? Kaye Cowher is not moving to Atlanta. It’s been obvious for some time that Cowher is looking at either the Washington Redskins or the Carolina Panthers. the other reason that Cowher resigned as that he was miffed, like a petulant schoolgirl, that he was not paid as much as Mike Holmgren. That he hd signed a contract was a matter of preternatural indifference to him. Finally, even though in the Falcons’ universe, he would seem to represent the second coming of Vincent Lombardi, there is some school, of thought that the Steelers finally won a Super Bowl during the Cowher regime in spite of him. Note his playoff failures in the 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2001, and 2004 seasons — including 4 losses in the AFC championship games.

So, wish on for Slobberin’ Jaw, but you won’t get him.

How about we bring Cowher down here, change the teams colors to Black and Gold. Pop the roof off the dome. Drink some IronCity Beer and call them dirty turds the “SteelCons”.

Mark — Cowher would be the worst choice for this team. His style of ranting, raving, pushing, shoving, and spitting on players to get results is passe. Players simply DO NOT respond to that kind of hysterics anymore.

Even Rothlisberger and the other Steelers prefer the calm demeanor of Mike Tomlin over the bullying of Cowher. Yeah he won a Superbowl, but, most folks consider old lady luck having shined on Pittsburgh (Carson Palmer getting hurt, the kicker missing for Indy, bad officiating in the SuperBowl, etc., etc., etc.)that year more than Cowher being some kind of great coach that year.

The top teams this year are being led by player coaches (Dallas, New England, Indy, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, etc.)who do not jump, scream, and yell on the sidelines.

Dallas responds better to the jovial style of Wade Phillips and even New York has become a more disciplined bunch after the players had a come to Jesus meeting with their coach; telling him they DO NOT like his bullying style of coaching.

And speaking of Wade Phillips that is the man Arthur Blank should have hired after he stupidly fired Dan Reeves, instead of hiring that “frat boy” Jim Mora. The players LOVED and RESPECTED Wade Phillips.

Arthur Blank was right on point with the “type” of coach that we needed. Petrino didn’t anticipate losing one of the most talented/gifted QBs to ever play the game. In all fairness, a lot of you reading this may have bailed out too (but probably at the end of the season).

Clean House. The Dirty Bird era is cooked, black is what you wear to a funeral, and criminals belong in jail… I’m done with the mourning process.

Now, go back to the red, clean up your image, shave Artie’s mustache, find a quarterback (or steal one, fits our ATL theme), and hire a respectable coach. Wipe the slate clean, you can’t do any worse so start all over. Rebuilt the O-line to protect that guy called a QB, whip the defense into shape (gave up 34 pts to a 5-7 team), get your running backs healthy, train a quarter back to not lose the game for you, and win the games your suppose to win in your division…

BUT, it all starts with cleaing house and getting rid of the other cancers within. Free Mike Vick? Why don’t those who still support Vick go join him in jail. He lied, he cheated, and he personally destroyed a city, and that’s what we’ve found so far. A real coach wouldn’t put up with this kind of BS…

+1 on Cowher…

Mark, please send me some of whatever you are smoking. Why would Cowher even consider such an inept, deadend organization such as the Falcons……….not to mention the meddling owner who makes all things worse.

By Dan Shenise

Cowher would be an excellent choice. He has many similar qualities to Tony Dungy. Both are defensive minded, both require CHARACTER from their players, both are hard but fair men. Tony had/has an excellent relationship with Rich McKay in Tampa. A relationship that built the foundation for many years of playoff football and one Super Bowl win. I believe Cowher and McKay would see eye to eye on most football related issues and could potentially build a similar foundation here. Cowher would control the locker room, through respect, honor and integrity, not petty bullying, or whining like Petrino. I also think that Cowher has the integrity not to hold Blank over the barrel over money.

I have not watched the Falcons all year for 2 reasons. The first being there really is no team without Mike Vick as you can clearly see secondly, and I knew Petrino was no good for the Falcons the day that he arrived. He was very vocal in the media and he did not know anything about the team, which makes him an idiot. The team is better off without him. Now, they need to work on getting Vick back on the field and they may salvage this organization. I do hope they continue to go down hill though, only because they did not stand up for their fallen soldier during his ordeal. Except for the acts by DeAngelo Hall and Roddy White during the Saints game, I have not heard any of the players stand up for him and that makes me angry. This is just about the best the Falcons can do without Mike Vick so, they should just prepare themselves the a bad season and look forward to vick returning to the team and taking them to the Superbowl. And to all the Vick haters, don’t even waste your time responding to my comments on this because anyone who thinks a dog deserves better treatment than a man is too stupid for me to even have a conversation with anyway, so I won’t even be reading anything after my post. See ya!!

Wow, such strong opinions by certain individuals who wont be named about a fallen falcon. Number 7 committed a crime and should pay for his transgressions. To belittle him in every way, shape and manner sounds like hatred, maybe borderline racist.

In reference to the coach who I was not fond of but started to support because he was a falcon, I expected nothing better so I am hurt for the organization but not bitter because of the nature of his past actions. Though Dan Reeves was not the most popular person to the average sometime falcon fans, Dan was a stable presence through the good and bad times. I think that Dan deserves some consideration as well as Jeff Jagodzinski, Tony Sparano, Jason Garrett, Jim Caldwell, Rob Chudzinski, Rex Ryan, Mike Singletary and Tim Lewis.

Bill Cower, Bill Parcells and Pete Carroll would give you a big name but the return on your investment may not match. Due to their past success, they would command a huge salary and anything less than a superbowl would turn this city of fare weathered fans cold enough to relocate the franchise. Wildcard coaches who should also be considered is Steve Mariucci, Mike Martz and Dennis Green. With that being said, I dont feel that there is a slam dunk candidate available right now.

As for Number 7 supporters and haters, may God bless you the way you bless others with your words and thoughts.

So, really, deep down, are you surprised to find out that Petrino is a raging opportunist? Come on, now. Remember the Auburn fiasco? At one time, I thought Petrino would look good on the Gator sideline. Thank God, Jeremy Foley and Bernie Machen, that did NOT happen.

I say all that to say: Mr. Blank, please get out of the way, get some football people in there , and let them run the place. I’ve been a Falcon fan by default) since day one of the franchise (the only game on TV in those days in the Florida panhandle was the Falcon game). I’ve watched these guys lose ,more games and waste more talent than any other sports franchise in my experience. And I’ve never seen the Falcons at this low of a low point.

I think Arthur Blank’s heart is in the right place, but I believe his organizational skill have been trumped by his willingness to place his faith in the thugs and opportunists of the NFL. Thank God for college sports…..

I demand MR Blank go after Petrino’s $$$ and bonus money like he trying to go after a FRANCHISE PLAYER’s $$$ whom by the way should come back to ATLANTA because we support him.

FIRE MCKAY!

I was at the game and I never been so quiet at a Falcons game, Redman should have start since game one.

Joey and Bryon needs to go in the offseason

Stop drafting sorry defensive players in the first round. IS THERE ANY REASON WHY we didnt get that dude that went to the Texans??!?

Who did we get in return for giving up the best Returner in the NFL in Rossum??

WHY for the love of Jesus, Mary and Jospeh did we give away Patrick Kearney to Seattle Seahawks?!? He was the heart and soul of the Defense! I miss that dude who know how to get the crowd involve on critical downs!!

I coulda sworn I was at a funeral MONDAY night!!!

At least I got a shot at getting season tickets now =)

in the meantime, HEEHAW how about them Cowboys!!

Don’t laught but Lou Holtz did the EXACT same thing to the Jets years ago.

Get Marty Schottenheimer (he lives in Charlotte). Let him bring his son and brother with him (daughter and sister if he wants).

He will turn it around like Sherholtz did for the Braves. He will make the Falcons a consistent 10 win team in no time.

Why should anyone be upset that Patrino left? This is not the same Falcons team that he was hired to coach a year ago. When he was hired, the team had potential (and a quarterback).

A year later, Patrino’s asked to start from scratch. I don’t blame him for leaving at all.

Instead of trying to win, he’s had to deal with the Vick-situation, Deangelo Hall, and not having a quarterback.

It’s becoming more and more clear that Blank: a) ain’t that bright. Or, b) his vanity clouds his better judgment. He is a great people person/salesman, and his drive to be a billionaire (vanity) is how he succeeded at Home Depot. He obviously wasn’t the one making the management/operations decisions or judging character of executive hirings there.

How he can be so clueless as to put his mug on MNF (again, vanity) for fifteen minutes in the midst of what was happening under his nose tells us all we need to know. I understand you are walking a fine line in your position as far as how much you can rip Blank, but let’s face it: this guy is the main problem here. McKay, Mora, Vick, and Petrino all stem from Blank not being able to assess personality/talent and being snowed as a result.

All we can hope is that he lucks into a good GM hire and gets the hell out of the way. Needless to say, McKay needs to go now and we need to start with a clean slate.

I read in ESPN preseason magazine that one assistant coach from another team said he didn’t know of any coach that would want to coach the locker room of me first out of control players like the Falcons had. Guess he was right.

This organization needs some kind of stability. They need a foundation. They need to start back from the beginning. We need to look at this organization as an expansion team. They need to start over from scratch. We have holes everywhere. We are aging in numerous positions.

We start at the top…HEAD COACH…then we work our way down. Do i blame him for leaving…nope not at all. IS he a coward….yes I believe he can be labeled that. Was he run out of town by his players….yeah I think so…the players never respected him from the word go. So waht does that say about the players? That they a need a no nonsense coach who doesn’t take crap from anyone no matter who they are. However that coach must have NFL cred. That coach must be willing to start from scratch and so should the owner. This is not a quick fix team. This team needs LB’s. This team needs OL. This team needs Interior DL. This team needs a SS and FS. This team needs a big RB. This team needs a QB.But most of all this team needs a COACH. this team needs a coach with NFL cred. A coach with Super Bowl exp. A Coach with a DEFENSIVE MINDSET. A coach who can relate to NFL players..because he was one for some time. THis team needs alot of things…but this team really needs Mike Singletary.

NFL owners need to realize that that Joe College “I am your King” approach does not work in the pros. Also, Vick could be on the field right now if Blank supported him from the beginning. Think about it. These billionaire NFL owners are some of the most powerful men in America who are well connected with political and law enforcement officials. Remember when Michael Irvin was going through his cocaine stuff? Jerry Jones helped him get back on the field with minimal long-term harm. Cowboys GM Tex Schramm also helped his players (Harvey Martin, Tony Hill, Tony Dorsett a.k.a. “The Cocaine Cowboys” in the 1980s. The real reason the ATL will never have a winner is because the owners and fans don’t put winning absolutely first and foremost above all else – they’re too busy looking for guys that they “like.” GO COWBOYS!!!

I am not sure if even Bill Cowher wants to walk into a situation where the entire team has pretty much “cratered” the entire season due to the Michael Vick fiasco. STOP. Please, stop the ‘Free Michael Vick’. He is not a political prisoner. He confesed to a crime… just let it go.

Back to Football, Atlanta has a few issues here. Starts at the top with the owner and GM, just like the winless Dolphins, they are making wrong descisions in personal.

I think they should go with a young talent (Mike Singletary) or perhaps a first time coach that was an ex player (Russ Grimm) to fire them up. This team needs a change in attitude and a new QB. For every Caron Palmer, there is an Akili Smith/Tim Couch/Eli Manning/David Carr/Joey Harrinton etc, so going with a QB with their first round may not be the way to go. Good luck to us all as we watch this team in the future…

Why would Bill Cowher come here when he has a home in North Carolina and the Panther’s job is about to be open?

The Falcons need to wait to see all of the head coaches who are available instead of jumping the gun and hiring a guy like Petrino, who nobody really wanted on the NFL level. Marty Sch., Dan Reeves, or even Joe Gibbs is needed here for about 4 years to settle the ship. Remember how the Rams went from nothing to Super Bowl champs and contenders under Dick V. No more college coaches or wonderkids, with all due respect to Jason Garrett, he needs to call plays for my Cowboys another year so we can get back to back Super Bowl wins. P.S. the Falcons should have hired Wade Phillips last year when they had the chance. But thanks, we love him in Dallas.

Look on the bright side, the Falcons still are not the Miami Dolphins.

Arkansas better beware ‘cause if he did this to the Falcons he’ll definitely do it to them when things get rough or a better opportunity presents itself. Jimmy Johnson is the single best coach alive in the USA today. Bet your very last dollar on that. Regardless, he ain’t coming back into coaching when he has that analyst gig and all that free time to fish on his yacht. Even if he had the “bug” it would not be to coach the Falcons at any salary.

Bill Cowher will be the next coach of the Carolina Panthers effective in’08. John Fox will be fired as will his entire staff after ‘07. You can again cross Bill Cowher off any short list of candidates as I am positive Cowher already has an agreement in principle to join the Panthers organization when an opening occurs.

If I were a betting man, I would say that Shottenheimer will be coach of the Falcons by next week.

Petrio, came here to ride on the back of Vick and take all the credit. He brought two unproven quarterbacks (friends), so they could ride the bench and get paid! Arthur should get some of that money back. DeAngelo Hall is one of the best players we have, and now you people want him gone. There is nothing wrong with him supporting Vick, he is a team mate. Didn’t you hear Blank say he still owns the rights to Vick (good choice of words), even if it’s, so he can get his revenge on him when he gets out. Why would Blank make the point that Vick is still on the team, when he has removed all things Vick from Flowery Branch, as if he never played here. I hope Vick can resign and get out of his contract. I’m sure Vick made more money for Blank, than what Blank paid him. Art doesn’t look broke to me, the only thing he lost was respect and lots of fans. By the way Blank, that chicken remark didn’t go unnoticed. Nothing good is going to happen for the Falcons as long as Blank cower to the red necks of GA. What is UGA? It is only fitting, that in a world of professional football, that the coach left before being fired. Look inside the Falcons locker room and you find players, that if they were set to another team, may not replace that teams current starter. The players gave up when Vick left. It is not a Black or White issue, it is the issue of pro athletes thinking they are above the law. As far as Mr. Hall and his comments, play harder, win a game and then talk.

Cowher ain’t coming here. No way, no how. He walked away from a great team, in a grand football city (where he was from, no less). ATL is a joke when it comes to sports (except the Braves). I’m an ATL native and a hopelessly loyal homer, but enough is enough. The Falcons need to start over with a young, stable coach with NFL experience, one who would command the players’ respect - a man like Singletary. But the main thing they need to do is get bigger on the lines. No quarterback can throw from his knees. The Falcons keep drafting skill players, while the offensive line remains paper thin. Get big and physical down in the trenches, and any quarterback can make plays. The only reason Vick had any success at all is because he could run for his life.

Bill Cowher…are you kidding me? Why would Bill Cowher, or any other self respecting coach, even consider coming to the Atlanta Falcons? THE FALCONS ARE A JOKE !!! THE FALCONS ARE A TRAIN WRECK !!! When you have players like MeAngelo Hall, who care nothing about anything but themselves, it says alot. Crumpler b*** for a week about not getting the ball. On a Monday night against the Giants, he dropped three passes right in his hands. Blank needs to get rid of ALL THE VICK SUPPORTERS and start over. Its a tough business. However why has business come to this? Handshakes and contracts mean nothing. Look at #7. Look now at Petrino. Loyalty? Committment? Yes its all about the $$$. Why? Society has set the rules for this. If you have you are accepted and set up as a role model. If you had the respect and integrity to go with it fine! Most don’t. Seems the tone here is about the one thing that is not really an issue, Black and White. Why does it always have to have this undertone? The best man for the job. The most qualified. I would think those would be top of the list. Petrino made his decision. Why waste you energy and time on some one that has already packed his bags and left. How about some forward thinking? How about solution thinking? I love the Falcons, and i am a committed fan. How about you?

Cowher? Great choice, will guarantee 100% renewal of season tickets. He took Pittsburgh to the playoffs his first six seasons on the job, including a Superbowl trip in 1995.

His Steelers had the best record in the NFL over the years he was in charge from 1992-2006.

But to get him, you will need to fire McKay and give Cowher GM and coaching duties, otherwise, forget it.

But I like your thinking.

You know, I’m of the opinion that you don’t need to be an a* kicker to be successful as an NFL coach. And people who say that kind of stuff don’t know anything about football. Bill Belichick has one of the biggest egomaniacs in the world in Randy Moss, and Moss is having a career year. Wade Philips also has one of the biggest egonmaniacs on his team with TO, and he too is having a career year. The reason why Belichick and Philips have been successful is because they hold their team to a certain set of standards but they don’t treat their players like they are high schoolers. This notion that you have to be like Bear Bryant in the Junction Boys to a successful coach just isn’t true.

The Falcons have let me down again. This organization needs to spend (maybe overspend) to get a REAL coach in here. Someone who will put D Hall and the rest of these thugs in their place. This team needs discipline and structure - er, Cowher. Vick has shown us exactly what is wrong with the Falcons - NO DISCIPLINE! Crumpler, Dunn, Brooking, etc. and gang all now have to try to cast off the shadow created by Vick, D-Hall, Petrino. This isn’t an organization full of losers - it’s time to get a new Coach and/or GM in here to run it.

Anyone wishing for Cowher may just as well for Lombardi - ain’t going to happen.

I’m white, and I’m saying it’s time for a tough, no-nonsense black head coach.

I’m tired of the race-baiting c* from TM.

I’m tired of the “Free Mike Vick” c* from the idiot lunkheads.

I’m tired of the constant undercurrent of black vs. white racism from the black players (the “playas” - jeez, give me a break). “we’re pros, cut us some slack, we’re just expressing ourselves”. C, C, C*.

The fundamental problem is that starting salaries have gotten so high that these players (and it applies to all major sports) now believe that it’s all about them, not the team. Or winning. As long as they get their publicity and stats, everything is good. After all, it’s easy to find somebody else in the league to pay them their outrageous salaries.

So what’s the incentive for a player to behave properly when you’re paying them $3 million +++ per year?

Big money (the agents) has ruined pro sports.

There is no way out until the fundamentals of the pro game change….and it may take another strike to change that.

It is really a shame that a city like Atlanta, that made it through the 60’s without riots or major racial violence, to be so racially fractured over the Falcons. I attended a Falcons’ game two years ago to find at least half of the fans to be black. Everyone pulled for Vick because he was exciting, but Vick is a criminal who let us all down. Teams can bring people together. One of the most touching things I have seen in sports were when Italian-Americans rallied behind Franco Harris in Pittsburg because his mother was Italian. I don’t care what race the coach or the quarterback belong to as long as they are honest and honorable men. Vick and Petrino were neither.

Petrino inherited a terrible situation and left it in even worse shape. As much as I think he is a turn tail, I dont blame him for leaving. He got out before it was too late and he could not get another head coaching job. Oh Mr. Blank what has become of your franchise. Cowher might be what this team needs but why would he want to come here. I mean come on, no qb, no offense, no defense, no special teams, a roster stock full of quitters, back stabbers and overrated veterans. Get real no coach in his right mind would wont to come here. They will probably get some young cooridinator whose ambition outweighs his ability and common sense. No I dont think Cowher touches this crap with a ten foot pole. And who could blame him.

Bill Cowher won’t take the Atlanta job for the same reason Bobby Petrino left abruptly and without warning.

The Atlanta Falcons’ roster has too many players of low moral character — too many player with a thuggish outlook on life.

Even though I have no insight into the inner workings of the Falcons’ clubhouse, I can read these tea leaves just fine.

Petrino leads his team to a Monday Night Football game. He expects them to play football against a division rival to win a home game.

Instead, his players are spending more time and effort putting together protest signs against a US Federal Court — acting like Mike Vick is a political prisoner jailed in a Soviet Gulag for expressing support for human rights and democracy!

Mike Vick is no Nelson Mandela! He is no Andrei Sakharov! Mike Vick was and remains a spoiled athlete who learned how to gain money and fame, but never learned what character and integrity meant.

But here we have multiple Falcons’ players dedicated their pre-game attention on crafting and planning moments to hoist protest signs and flip up jerseys to reveal messages demanding the release of a fairly convicted criminal!

A fairly convicted criminal who plead guilty, and who after he plead guilty went forward to twice lie to court-appointed investigators about personal conduct contrary to provisions of a previous parole deal!

For lying twice after copping a guilty plea, Vick gets — GASP — an extra six months added to his sentence. Yes, he’s truly a political prisoner in the image of Mandela and Sakharov — NOT!

Scoring a touchdown that offered a brief hope of getting back in the game, instead Falcons players chose to turn the end zone into a ad-hoc civil rights protest march.

Martin Luther King must have rolled in his grave to see such a spectacle accorded to a man who beat, hanged, electrocuted, and tortured dogs to death!

Me personally, I was merely sickened! I am sure Petrino at that moment reached a catharsis. He realized he didn’t belong associated with these thugs.

So, he immediately inquires about the open job at Arkansas and makes it known he is immediately available. A broken promise to Arthur Blank? Yes, perhaps it was.

It also represented a salvation for a man clearly forced to compromise his moral integrity to have his name associated with a classless football team.

Bill Cowher is also a man of integrity. He will not want to associate his good name with a gang of thugs either. The Falcons don’t need a new head coach.

The Falcons need a broom — ideally a very large and wide one!

I think that the Falcons would be better able to hire someone like Marty Schottenheimer as their head coach instead of Cowher (who will be the #1 choice of most every team looking for a coach this offseason).

Also, since we are talking about the Falcons who haven’t had back-to-back winning seasons (read: consistency) since their inception, the knock on Marty that he “doesn’t win in the playoffs” is not as relevant.

This team needs to become a consistent winner, which Schottenheimer can do. We can let the playoffs work themselves out when we get good enough to actually get there!

That said: I agree that Blank needs to hire a coach with a successful history as a head coach. This is not a hire to “give an opportunity” to an unproven commodity.

As an AA I would love to see a AA as head coach, but I would also like to not through him into a situation such as the one the Falcons have. If you bring in Singletary bring him in as a defensive coordinator, Go after proven talent, I like Bill Cowher, I don’t like parcells, i thin he and Gibbs are both over the hill and out of touch and can’t change. So Cowher is the best choice, ad total control of the team is your only option to grant him. Fire Rich McKay and bring in someone who knows talent…

From Louisville Here: Pitino and Petrino both have (and had) a little saying here “Don’t Hang Around With Losers” We had Petrino figured to be with Atlanta for 2-3 years until a quality SEC opening (Flumer’s Retirement or Myle’s jump)and not to a puke SEC program like Arkansas. By that time Petrino would have Atlanta turned into a respectable organization. He must have wanted to leave the Atlanta mess pretty badly. Let’s see now….. Why? With all due respect, there are no coaches out there with track records of head coaching and building successful teams who would ever consider taking the Falcons job.

  1. The owner may be a nice guy, but really knows nothing about owning a pro sports team, or running one. Strike One.

  2. The current set of players are either a) unmanageable, b) over the hill, c) lacking in quality, or d) all of the above. There really is nothing to “build on” here. What would be the “nucleus” you would want to retain for the long term? Abraham? Boley? Who? Strike Two.

  3. Financial constraints associated with the Vick debacle will hang over this franchise for the next 5 years. No one is going to wait 5 years to play on a level playing field. Strike Three.

So: knowing that no “reputable” coach would take this job, we have to look at candidates who have something to prove, but are high risks, having no head coaching experience.

Of those, I would favor Singletary. He’s black, and I would propose to you that he wouldn’t put up with the C* going on right now between the players ears - it would be “Shut the F up and play ball, mf, or I’ll kick your A* ! I don’t give a S* about your prima dona ego, and if you don’t belioeve me, I’ll have you out here at 5AM running stadium steps for 2 hours before practice!”

Mark,

I shared your admiration for Petrino’s plan.

I don’t share your solution to his departure.

I think this franchise is upside down. Almost all successful franchises have a stable, top-down structure: Owner-GM-Coach. Emphasizing Owner and Coach over the GM is a mistake Blank keeps making.

He’s not alone. The same mistake bedevils the Redskins, the Raiders and the Cowboys (who only recently turned it around.)

I believe Blank needs to empower Rich McKay. And if Blank doesn’t like McKay’s decisions, then replace him.

That’s how a successful franchise operates. Just ask the Steelers.

FIRST REPLACE THE GM.NEXT LET THE NEW GM PICK THE COACH.THEN TAKE A GOOD LONG LOOK AT THE PLAYERS—-PICK THE BEST 10 OR LESS AND TRADE OR RELEASE THE REST——-THEN CHANGE THE NAME COLORS AND LOGO OF THE TEAM(I SUGGEST THE PUSSYCATS) LAST BUT NOT LEAST. GET OUT OF THE WAY—-OUT OF THE LOCKERROOM OFF THE PRACTICE FIELD—-OFF THE SIDELINES AND QUIT TRYING TO BE BUDDY BUDDY WITH THE PLAYERS RUN THE TEAM LIKE A BUSINESS AND NOT LIKE A HOBBY——KEEP DOING IT LIKE YOU ARE DOING IT NOW AND IT WILL NEVER IMPROVE.

Just looking at the most obvious candidate to me it would be Chan Galey. He is local, he has both college and pro experience and he would not have to move which would save Blanks a moving bill. I believe he could hire Chan at far less than Cowher and since he is a former head coach he could run the organization from the coaches perspective. Chan was pretty successful in the ACC which is a competitive league to say the least. What do you think?

As a Steeler fan, Glenn exactly captured my sentiment about Cowher:

“I would rather have Mike Tomlin as [Steelers] head coach than Bill Cowher . He is going to be a good one & last year no one could believe he was anything more than a token minority interviewee . He will probably be the next Steeler head coach pushing 20 years on the job”

Cowher had overstayed his welcome in Pittsburgh. That doesn’t make him a bad coach, and I’ll argue with anyone who thinks the Steelers won SuperBowl #5 in spite of Cowher or because of bad officiating.

I’m just not sure that in another owner/city environment that Cower will be a saviour, including in Atlanta, where the problems run deeper than personnel or x and o’s.

Tomlin is a great example of the kind of hires that are succeeding in the NFL: young guys who have succeeded at their role (assistant head coach, O. coordinator, D. coordinator) who have the management skills to handle the head coaching management role. Going back to the Old Boy’s Network of past coaches just doesn’t work anymore (see: Marty, Joe, Norv, … . ), nor does hiring assistants based on the success of the head coaches who are their mentors (Eric “Mangenous”, Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weiss … .).

The problem is the ownership and history of the franchise. Assuming a hire like Tomlin will be successful presupposes an ownership with the intelligence, wisdom, and support of a wise ownership like the Rooney family. To build that wisdom and history, a team like Atlanta might have to take its lumps for a few years or decades (the Steelers were perennial losers until the 70s), and in today’s sports environment I’m not sure fans or media have that patience.

Good luck, Atlanta. I hope Vick gets back on the field, and that Blank has the wisdom and patience to pick the right coach.

Blank needs to drop the politically correct marketing PR crap and roll up his sleeves and clean house. The veteran leaders (I guess that’s what they like to be called) are the first to go. Meangleo, AllMe, and even Brooking. I added Brooking to the list because I feel sorry for him considering he deserves to be part of a better organization than this motley crue of spoiled narcissist thugs. McKay, who can’t draft a decent WR to save his life , should be shown the door as well.

None of the before mentioned coaches, who are all great ideas, will come here until then. Cowher in the ATL??? If he were to get into MeAngelo’s face and tell him what a baby he is, Meangelo would play the race card and then we would have another shallow race war on our hands. Singletary??? He, is a man of character and intensity and expects the same no matter the color of a man’s skin. Plus, wants nothing more than a chance to win. He turned down the job at Baylor, the place where he was an All-American in college, because they weren’t serious enough about winning. Why would he be willing to put up with all the headaches here? Marty?? He’s probably been burned one too many times by GM’s, owners, and players (Chargers and Redskins) to develop the trust needed to get the Falcons to follow his lead.

The next head coach will more than likely be one of the no-name “up-and-coming” types. To be honest, I’m not expecting him to turn the Falcons into a winner in a year’s time. Don’t get me wrong, if it were to happen, I would be ecstatic. On the other hand, if he were just able to bring some stability to the organization would be a step in the right direction.

Only problem with Cowher is there seems to be a curse on NLF coaches. No coach who has won a super bowl has taken a second team to a super bowl and won. Silly but worth noting. Who knows maybe the combo of Cowher and the Falcons could break this long standing curse. I think the Falcons should look to someone completely new who can commit to the team and city.

Oh, I might as well.

Dear Arthur,

Here is a five-point plan for fixing the Falcons, free of charge, just ‘cause I like you. Please keep in mind that this plan will likely not pay dividends until 3-5 years from now. That’s just the way it is in the NFL. You might as well forget a quick fix; one or two mistakes can sink a franchise for years. Look at Dan Snyder, he’s always trying to do that and it never works. So put this into motion and keep up a brave front in light of all the empty seats for the next few seasons. They’ll come back eventually and pretend they were there all along. You’re a rich man; you should be able to handle it.

Step 1: Make discreet overtures to Cowher so there’s no PR backlash when he says he doesn’t want to come back to coaching yet. ‘09 is a possibility for the Chin. In the meantime, forget a retread or college coach. Promote either from within or else try to tap the assistant marketplace. DON’T OVERPAY.

Step 2: trade next year’s top draft pick for as many picks as you can get in later rounds. Just go with whoever gives you the best overall package.

Step 3: with whatever pick you get, FORGET A QB. After all, who’s the best QB coming out next year??? Matt Ryan??? Please. Nice player, nothing to get excited about. Focus on an offensive tackle or guard you can build around for the next five years or so.

Step 4: clean house. Start with D. Hall. He talks too much. It’d be one thing if he were a great player; he’s not. Bye.

Step 5: OK, so maybe this is only a 4 point plan. 5-point plan just sounds better. So repeat step 4.

Best,

Tom

Mr. Blank I realize that you may never read this, but just in case on one of those sleepless nights that I’m sure you’ve been having, that you happen to want to know what people are saying about the Atlanta Falcons. Well heres my take on all of this mess; First of all when you invest 150 million dollars in anything or anybody, please do your homework. Know everything about the company { Falcons} or person {Vick} that there is to know; you should know better!!! Secondly, get rid of that sorry General Manager { MaCay}whos ruining your franchise. Trust me Mr.Blank he has no ideal what hes doing. Take a little time out and reflect on the decisions that he has made, or talked you into making, start with the last two coaches, although I think you hired the one before Petrino.Which brings me to my third point; get out of the way!!! You don’t have a clue about football, how to put a team together and definately hiring a coach. You want to be seen too much; the only time we want to see you is when you are holding the Lombardi Trophy, so we should’nt see you for at least another ten years or so; unless you go out and spend the money to bring a big time coach in here with some crediabilty and bcakbone, “aka” Bill Cowher. And please once again, GET RICH MaCAY OUT OF HERE BEFORE HE TOTALLY RUIN WHATS LEFT OF A PRO FOOTBALL IN GEORGIA. MR. BLANK FOR MORE ADVICE GET IN TOUCH WITH ME ,I HAVE’NT BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT PERSONEL YET.

Okay - Its a shipwreck …Here’s how to fix it: This is not a crisis. It’s an opportunity. Now you can clean house and really scrub hard. First : Arthur Blank goes in front of the assembled media with new coach in tow. Bill Parcells, Bill Cowher, whomever. He tells everyone that the Michael Vick era is officially over. Even if MV gets out of jail early,he’s not coming back to the Falcons. Then the fans that are kidding themselves about Vick can go follow another team or just learn to live with the new reality.

Two: Make it plain to the new coach that there are NO sacred cows in Atlanta. If a player has a bad attitude or no talent,he can be dealt or released and the owner will stand behind the coach. No more “Free Michael Vick” T-shirts,posters or commemorative bongs. Players that have a future will hook on with another team. The rest shouldn’t be here to begin with. Three: Sauce for the gander. Make everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) in the organization accountable.Trainers,Players,Coaches, and the General Manager.Make it known that their job is on the line every day.Benchmark progress and send the failures packing.Study the successful organizations and baldly copy what works and discard what doesn’t. Four:Re-connect with the fans. This is by far the toughest part because of what has gone before. It will take communication and humility, but get them back and let them know that bettr times are on the way.

There.That wasn’t so hard ,was it ?

Bill Cowher will not be the next coach for ATL. Coach Cowher went to college (NC State) and lives in NC year around. Coach Cowher will be the next coach for the Panthers. Also, Coach Cowher is not a GM and we need both to be successful. Mr. Blank please end this speculation and hire Coach & GM Bill Parcels as soon as possible. We need a miracle.

By bye bye

I think I could take the heat Petrino is taking for a few million. You gotta think DeHall is an idiot for calling the Falcons a “great organization”. Coach Petrino did not sign up for the situation he found himself in. He signed up to coach Vick and an team on the up swing, not the mess he got. He went about leaving the wrong way but I certainly can’t blame him for bolting!

Let’s look at this from Bobby’s side. There is always two story’s then the truth. What if at the end of the season they fired the coach. Then what? The man had to do what was best to support his family. He had an opportunity and he took it. He may have felt that he was being led to believe he was going to be the coach of the falcons but if all of the players ast coaches and other members of the falcon family felt he was hard and distant then maybe he was going to be fired and felt that pressure and got out while the getting was good.Did he lie ? Yes But if there is one fan nfl player or anyone that has never lied then god bless them.the man did what he had to do and in the broad scheme of things the season was already lost the players and according to the press conf other people within the falcons org didn’t like him .they are all very happy and it gives the falcons more time to find another coach.

Yeah go get Cowher, Marty Shootenheimer, or try to lure Howie Long! Getting Howie would be easier, he a Hall of Famer, Knows defenses like the back of his hand, can build a great offensive staff, he’s a great communicator and motivater and best of all None of these mean are quitters like Petrino!

Arthur stop going after these razzle dazzle coaches and get back to the basic’s of hard nose, in your face, smash mouth football playing, with 300 plus pound “O” linemen, mean as rattle snake linebackers and lighting fast corners and safeties!

And go get Marty Shootheinhimer or Bill Cowher either man you will not lose and if you do it will not be for an entire season!

Oh and fire Rich McKay for making the suggestion of hiring Petrino in the first place.

You must be joking? Cowher? He’d never come here. Remember he worked for the Rooneys in Pitt. I’m sorry, but Blank is no Rooney. Cowher would be crazy to come here after working with the Rooneys.

The Falcons problems are at the very top: Blank is a jock-sniffing loser. There are reasons the Vicks and Petrinos lie to him: It is easy and Blank is starstruck.

The Falcons will never ever EVER win with Blank as owner. Never. It is time for Blank to remove himself from ownership — if only for his own sake; if only to save himself from being the fool he is and always has been.

Hey Mark, forget Cowher! Like others have said, get Dan Reeves as GM and Mike Singletary as Head Coach. Purge the thugs now. Start Redman the rest of the season and keep him as #2 and get rid of Joey and Byron. The Falcons can rise again with the right folks guiding/coaching/playing.

Its good that the wound is finally opened. Now … perhaps … it can heal. New coach coming in knowing full well there is a rebuilding job ahead. I doubt it will be Bill Cower. It reminds me of when Marion Campbell’s second term as head coach of the Falcons was about to dawn. The Smiths were finally listening to the howls and screams from press and fans, to get someone established as a winner. Like a Bill Cower. They offered it to Terry O’Donahue, at UCLA; but, he laughed at the prospect of coaching the Falcons. They offered it to Dick Vermeil, who had retired to do television commentary. Like Bill Cower. He cried aligator tears about loving the Smiths, but he said he was still too burned out. He was retired for good … or until an opportunity to coach in a good organization would later come up (Rams and Chiefs). I get the feeling that in NFL football, Atlanta equals leprosy, bird flu and a good bout of the plague. No one wants to come near, at least those with reputations to protect. I foresee another unknown (from assistant NFL experience) being the next head coach. That is, unless Marion Campbell is available.

DeAngelo Hall is such a piece of trash. I hope he dies.
