Tech, UGA fans represent two schools of thought

Mark Bradley

Thanksgiving is a grand tradition, and so, in its way, is the annual appearance of our Field Guide to Georgia and Tech fans. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. You’ll reach for another slice of pumpkin pie.

Every Georgia fan would love to buy Mark Richt lunch. Many Tech fans would love to buy Chan Gailey out.

Georgia fans were so energized after the Florida game that they broke the chapel bell. Tech fans were so energized after the Virginia Tech game that they flooded Dan Radakovich’s e-mail account.

Georgia fans still revere the old Bulldog Theron Sapp for scoring the touchdown that broke the team’s eight-year Tech drought. Tech fans are pretty sure the old Bulldog Sonny Perdue is behind the real drought.

Georgia fans enjoy making fun of Tech’s worst-in-its-conference graduation rate. Tech fans enjoy making fun of Georgia’s worst-in-its-conference graduation rate.

Some Georgia fans are beginning to forgive Michael Adams. No Tech fan will ever forgive Dave Braine.

Many Georgia fans come to games just to cheer for Knowshon. Some Tech fans choose not to come to games and are known as no-shows.

Georgia fans can’t wait to see Caleb King on the field next season. Tech fans can’t wait to see Paul Johnson on the sideline next season.

Longtime Georgia fans fondly remember the times James Brown showed up at Sanford Stadium and led cheers. Longtime Tech fans want to know whose idea it was to invite Big Boi.

The quote that still frosts Georgia fans: “It wasn’t like they were some big, powerful team.” The quote that still frosts Tech fans: “Come on, dog. It’s a game.”

Georgia fans are thrilled that Richt seems to have shed his inhibitions. Tech fans are appalled that Richt seems to have lost his mind.

The place on campus few Georgia fans deign to visit: Stegeman Coliseum when basketball is being played. The place on campus few Tech fans deign to visit: The upper deck atop the north end zone when football is being played.

The Georgia fan’s low point of 2007: Losing to Spurrier yet again. The Tech fan’s low point of 2007: Realizing Gailey has four years remaining on his contract.

Georgia fans will miss listening to Larry Munson. Tech fans will miss pretending they’d never stoop so low as to listen to Munson.

Georgia fans are enthused about the prospects of playing in another BCS bowl. Tech fans are less enthused about the notion of another bowl played outside the Eastern time zone.

A Sanford Stadium tradition: The pregame trumpet solo. A new Bobby Dodd Stadium tradition: The fourth-quarter booing of the coach’s public-service announcement.

Georgia fans are excited the Bulldogs now have receivers who can catch. Tech fans will be excited when the Jackets find a quarterback who can throw.

Georgia fans are concerned that Uga VI seems to have put on weight. Tech fans are happy the Ramblin’ Wreck is no longer wrecked.

Georgia fans now have to worry about coordinating their attire to fit Richt’s latest whim. Tech fans don’t care what color their team wears, so long as it’s gold.

Georgia fans think Gailey is a great fit for Tech. Tech fans will have a fit if he sticks around another year.

Mark, I still think your Glavine piece was idiotic, especially with you kissing his rear end in the whole thing, but this makes up for it.

It makes up for it with every clever slight you send the Bugs way.

Oh, that stadium tradition thing had me in stitches!

Oh a totally cereal note, because I’m being totally cereal you guys, you are not a living, breathing human being if hearing that lone trumpeter on the SW corner of the South Upperdeck playing the Battle Hymn doesn’t make the hair on the back of you neck stand up, give you goose pimples, and make a chill run down your spine.

That is the single greatest moment in college football. I still don’t understand why people at ESPN think some fat idiot in a sousaphone dotting an “i” is so special. This tradition kicks that tradition’s rear all over the field. Much like an SEC team kicks Ohio State’s rear all over the field thanks to superior athletic speed (sorry, Commish Jim Delaney… you gonna write another letter now?)

Good job Bradley. Can’t wait to read and the Bug reactions to this column, because they’ll be seething with anger and jealousy.

You’re gonna catch a lot of fire here, quickly, from GT fans and well you should. Just do us a favor for a moment, Mark … tell us about the last three games and how fragile the losses and victories were.

I bleed bulldog red and a loss Saturday could hang on me like a dead fish (a/k/a albatross), but IT WILL NOT BE THE CASE !!!

We will have fought an epic struggle against an invincible foe and WILL PREVAIL !!

The Georgia fan’s low point of 2007: Losing to Spurrier yet again.

Yes, last year’s 18-0 goose egg in Columbia was especially painful. Oh wait, Georgia won that one. Maybe I’m thinking of the year before in Athens, when they broke our hearts with a two-point win. No…we won that one as well.

The Goff and Donnan eras are long gone. Richt is 2-2 against Spurrier, and Spurrier’s South Carolina team is a perennial Independence Bowl contender. Spurrier has gone from being one of the best coaches in America (conveniently, when he had more talent than everyone in the country except FSU and Miami), to the most overrated. He’s a consistent 5-game loser now that he competes on a level playing field. The 90s are over, let’s move on.

For all the Techies who can’t stand a grown man barking: Woof, Woof, Woof, Woof, Woof. God bless you Theron Sapp. Dawg fans: wear red, get in your seat early (but cheer the UGA playes entering the stadium), and be loud. Also, you should take some extra empty red UGA cups (I still have plenty of the Poss ones) with you so you don’t have to drink Coke out of the ugly Tech cups.

You nerds want fries with your yearly beatdown?

Gotta love that the Techies quit claiming “we’re clean” after probation and Reuben Houston, quit claiming “we’re smarter” after UGA smoked them on Rhodes Scholars, and quit claiming football superiority in the early 1960’s.

Release the hounds! Let loose the Dawgs of War! Glory, glory to ol’ Georgia. Sic ‘em!

I have to agree on the Mike Adams thing. No one I know likes him any more (or at all, for that matter) with the passage of time. The man put his wife on the payroll, bought a $10,000 breakfast for his son and a few of his son’s friends and then tried to have UGA pick it up, bought land in Costa Rica on a whim, ticked off the fundraising foundation to the extent that that funded an audit highly critical of him and lead to the creation of the Arch Foundation so that UGA would have a foundation not critical of Adams, and he still gets booed (loudly) at UGA games. I recommend that if anyone donates to UGA make sure your money goes through the UGA Foundation (insist on it) and not through the Arch Foundation. In fact, if you donating to UGA in your will make sure to stipulate that the donation waits until Adams is gone so he can’t claim credit for it.

Dawg fans say Dooley was a saint. Tech fans say Dooley retired quick, when Jan Kemp squealed.

Dawg fans say UGA’s massacres by Tech in WW II shouldn’t count. Tech fans say UGA dressed out as usual, and didn’t turn down the $$ proceeds.

Dawg fans say Sanford Stadium flies two “consensus” National Championship flags. Tech fans say since Ohio State won the polls that year, the 1942 flag was “consensus” of UGA fans only.

Dawg fans say they don’t care that Tech has four National Championships. Tech fans say that’s because UGA can never win another one.

Dawg fans yell “To He## with Tech!” Tech fans yell “To FSU with Richt!”

Dawg fans say Quincy Carter should not have fumbled the game away to Tech in 1999. Tech fans say Quincy wasn’t sure what a fumble was.

Dawg fans say Godsey was arrogant, to lift three fingers in Sanford Stadium in 2000, when Tech beat UGA for the third time in a row. Tech fans say they’ll lift two fewer this year.

Dawg fans say Joe Hamilton beat UGA in 1998 because of a bad call. Tech fans say a bad call is in the eye of the beholder. 1998

Wow… I’m unbiased here but Mark Bradley certainly can’t say the same. The AJC should be ashamed to print such a blatantly one-sided piece that contains no quotes, analysis, or original thought — just one man’s recycled opinions that stretch beyond the scope of football into the fans behavior & perceived beliefs.

I understand that Tech is an engineering school with a smaller enrollment & alumni spread across the world, while UGA’s numerous graduates tend to be concentrated in the range of AJC’s circulation. This means that the editors must cater to a predominantly Bulldog readership, but there still is something called journalistic integrity. No one would confuse the AJC for the NY Times or Washington Post, but even the Sports section of the top newspaper in a major city should have the decency to either prevent such biased “attack” articles from being published, or allow a pro-Tech writer (not sure if there are any in this paper) to publish a similar counter-piece.

Again, I don’t have a horse in this race, but this is what journalism school and years as an editor has taught me.

God forbid that Michael Adams should continue the efforts of Charles Knapp of bringing the University of Georgia out of the dark ages. If these posts are indicative of the Bulldog Nation’s values, let them have another Fred Davison for their president. Have you ever noticed how, with the lone exception of Georgia, in every state the “University of” trumps the techs and aggies in academic prowess? Think about it, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Oklahoma, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Washington, New Mexico, you name it, it’s the same. The “Univeristy of” is typically older, more traditioned and has the better academic reputation then the number two college, usually a land grant “State” or “Tech.” I think that is where the UGA developed such an inferiority complex – being the state’s flagship university but playing second banana academically to Georgia Tech. Maybe now that UGA is finally stepping up to the plate and getting serious about academics, their alums will be a little less obnoxious. Of course, if they run off Adams like they did Knapp they will have less of a chance of closing that 100 point SAT gap with Georgia Tech.

it’s funny how ga. fans talk all this s* while their on top. cause i didn’t hear a d* thing, didn’t see a flag, see a tag, or no talk about them mutts before the auburn game 06. although after that win it’s true u did get on a roll. i just think it’s pathetic how when your winning ya’ll are the best team in the country, but when your mediocre (ex.donnan years, before auburn game last year) you could care less.

And it’s really funny how 90% of your fan base is white trash that wouldn’t know a single players name, except maybe “hershy the great”. But if u brought the same bunch of rednecks to a game at samford stadium they’d probably stop watching tha dawgs because 90% of the fans at games are rich frat kids that have more money than they’ll ever have.

sorry, gotta keep going.

oh yeah, and another thing! tired of ga. fans acting like tech ain’t their rival! the only reason u say florida is your biggest rival is because since spurrier built florida into a power they’ve pretty much handed it to ya. but before spurrier this was just a game ya’ll went down to JAX so u could party and watch tha dawgs get a win (proof look at fla./ga. record before spurrier.)

there ain’t no dought you’ve handed to us the past 30 yrs. or so. but it’s funny how tech was really a good, consistent team up till about 1970 or so (ex. look at UGA/TECH record up until 1970). wanna know why that is? think about it? it’s called intergration, plus lowering admissions so that u can take full advantage of getting better athletes(JUST ASK DOOLEY). u see TECH didn’t try this until they started offering mngt degrees (ex. look at most of tech football players majors). not to make excusses, but that’s just the truth.

so in closing u ain’t dealing with no tech fan from atl, this is south ga. tech fan that’s seen and heard enough B* S from u band wagon jumping B*S!! And yeah i’ll be that tech fan at the game in a t-shirt and jeans, not worrying about how many frat parties there are after the game.

P.S. and I also am that guy who knows more about my team than just a running back that was good in 1980 and a radio host that sounds like he is drunk 99% of the time!!

Of course, Tech loves their “LORD AND SAVIOR” Taylor Bennett cuz he’s not Ball, well it’s as simple as this Tech fans, Bennett sucks just as bad and his stiff frame will be sacked FIVE times on Saturday

You know, the same board that cares more about gargling Michael Adams’ testicles than about the students whose best interests they are supposed to have at heart.

John, you’re a moron. Michael Adams is universally loathed by students, faculty, and alumni.

It is only thanks to you and the other members of the Board of Regents who are supposed to be looking out for us instead of thinking about the money that Adams is lining your pockets with that Adams is still in charge after the multiple embarassments that he’s brought on the University, embarassments that would have gotten any other president’s fired.

And I agree with the post about the “fat head” guy with the dog sprayed on his head—what a bubba! I’ll bet every living breathing red neck pr—k will be waring his G Saturday along with red underware and red toe nail polish. They will get up, turn on the light in their ‘gay’ georgia room in their mobile home and begin another day as an inbred—never knowing if their uncle or older brother is their father. We should not judge them just because they are stupid—-with this many involved it will actually be considered a race one day(like white or black)and Mark, ole buddy, will be the Jim Jones—don’t drink the cool aid. The fact that every player on the team sucks so bad they couldn’t get an offer from Georgia, and that your fans are the worst in the country and so on and so forth. This is so great. I mean…can you feel the hate flowing from the Techie keyboards? I love the sweeping generalizations the most. Here we are talking about a football game, and some of the most out-of-date, ridiculous diatribes about pizza-delivering Georgia grads are getting spewed out. I have seen very few posts on the actual game. Could that be because Tech senses a seventh consecutive disappointment? Could it be the massive inferiority complex? I mean, really, we’re all impressed that you guys are so mathematically inclined that you chose to be engineers. Really, I couldn’t be happier for you. For the rest of us who desire to fill the other 85% of the nation’s job market, there is a perfectly competitive school such as UGA. Not to mention the fact that UGA has, oh, a football team? And beautiful women? And a great campus? And let’s not forget, a top 5 party school ranking? Tech fans try to use it as a put-down, I’m pretty proud of it.

Tech fans like Kevin and Here Here are the exact reason people hate Tech. You arrogant pieces of poop! You have all levels of support from people of different levels of society and so does Georgia. The education that people receive from any school of higher education does NOT make a person but you wouldn’t understand that with your nose up in the air. How about getting your fans to support their team and fill the stadium and buy season tickets through the tough years and not just “3 game packages”. This is about a football game that will be played not by me or you but two teams of young men that represent their school. So quit taking your frustrations out on our supporters when you can’t find a way to keep a fan base! You know that the world could use a few less people that think so much of themselves that it really doesn’t matter if anybody else cares for you or not!

I know every dog breath out there is boasting with confidence—-but I’ll bet you don’t sleep very well on Friday night. The gay dogs have played their best game by far and of course Tech has not played up the their potential yet—however no matter how confident, you will be thinking about not only losing your chance to paly in Atlanta—Tennessee wins—-but losing your BCS bowl bid if things don’t go the way you liquor heads planned.

Amazing journalism. I guess if you go to school for years and years, try really hard, and make some good connections…you can just spew crap and put it online and get paid for it. Wow, did I ever choose the wrong job or what.

Further knocking his journalistic skills, Mark, do you ever feel bad for taking more than you give to the AJC (I’m assuming you get paid for what you “write”)? It’s amazing that you were able to use a few hundred words to say: GT doesn’t like Gailey, Georgia is good, Georgia Tech not so good. SEE, THAT WASN’T SO BAD NOW WAS IT?

GA. FANS WILL GO TO A GAME FOR THE HELL OF IT, WE WON’T! WE JUST KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON WITH OUR TEAM. WHERE AS GA. FANS, A GOOD PERCENTAGE OF THEM, COULD CARE LESS ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON ON THE FEILD. THEY’RE MORE WORRIED ABOUT LOOKING AT CUTE LITTLE UGA(LOL),WHY THEY CAN’T GET MUNSON ON THEIR HEADSET, TRYING TO FIND THEIR NEICE IN THE BAND,AND SO ON.

For all the tech fans that think they are vastly superior in academics. I will give tech that they are ranked as one of the top ten public colleges in the country. However UGA is not far behind, ranked in the top twenty. (us news and world report). UGA’s football ranking under Richt is always in the top ten(5 our of 7 years). Let me know when Tech is able to be in the top twenty for that long to balance it all out. Use facts people instead of just spewing off because you are tired of getting beat so often.

The word that you are looking for is counsel. I realize that you are a Techie and cannot speak english so we will give you a pass there. How about this. When someone yells in an a dispute it is generally because they lack the wit and intelligence to respond adequately. Using all caps is the web equivalent of yelling. In fact, for someone with disabilities using a screen reader, you are yelling. As a techie, you should know this. You either are an idiot or a complete a$$ or both.

Here are a few more…

Georgia fans are concerned with having their flags on the car for the game. Tech should be concerned that they have men with flags in their band.

Georgia fans are looking forward to the 2008 football season. Tech fans are looking forward to next year’s womens tennis season.

A Georgia man is proud to bring his beautiful wife to the game. A Tech wife is capable of bringing a Tech man (or two) on her shoulders to the game.

Georgia fans have no trouble getting tickets to the Tech home game. Tech fans have trouble selling their tickets to every other home game.

Georgia fans are proud to talk about their football coach. Tech fans are proud to talk about how much they hate theirs.

Georgia fans are still bitter about the Jasper Sanks “fumble call.” Tech fans are still bitter that they got a B+ in high school geometry.

Georgia focuses on Tech the week of the game. Tech focuses on Georgia all year long.

Great column Mark, I normally don’t attend the Tech game when played in Atlanta, (I reside in Athens). I will be attending this year however just to relive the excitement of beating the “trade school boys” on their own turf.

I agree with a previous writer, many of us “old dawgs” would love to see Adams move along. By the way, we still call the Jacksonville game “the world’s largest outdoor cocktail party” in spite of “yankee” Michaels attempt to eliminate tradition. Adams is not allowed into St. Simons during the Fla. game week for his own protection.

I predict a score UGA-35 Bugs 7.

Dawg fans say Tech curriculum is for nerds. Tech fans say UGA curriculum is so easy a caveman can do it.

Dawg fans say our super talent is good at avoiding getting tackled. Tech fans say our lesser talent is good at staying out of jail.

UGA fans never apologized for poking Tech players with canes on the sidelines in Tech’s 1893 win. Tech fans never apologize for beating the ‘Canes every year.

Dawg fans say Calculus makes Bennett walk around with a slide rule. Tech fans say Speech Communication major makes Stafford walk around with a glass of water.

Dawg fans say that in all the warp and woof of life, Dawgs have a corner on the “woof”. Tech fans say if a grown man stands there and woofs, he’s just warped.

I’ve been a die hard GT fan since 1960 and I thought the column was “all in good fun.” No harm, no foul so to speak.

To all the “beat-down, a$$-whupping” UGA fans: look at the last three years. UGA made the plays so I give them their props. But, with 3 minutes to go in each game, GT had a legitimate chance to win. One would think that UGA with all its “Parade All-Americans” would have taken care of business by then.

Sure, the Sanks fumble in ‘99 was dubious. But, so was the “don’t blow the whistle til a dog has the ball” fumble last year.

I love all the guys posting huge score UGA blowouts on blogs. I’ll take GT and 28 for $100,000. No, I didn’t think so.

I have a novel idea. Let’s play the game on Saturday and see what happens.

Tech fans realize that the purpose of a University is to educate our youth so they can keep our country great. Georgia fans think that the purpose of UGA is to provide them with a Championship football team. UGA is so pathetic as an academic institution. Their reputation among the business world is very bad.

This says it all:

Gameday on North Avenue

You wake up in the top bunk, snug within your Star Trek bedsheets, with that feeling in the pit of your stomach. That pounding feeling, that giddy, nauseous rush that can mean only one thing. You rush to the potty and take care of business. The feeling goes away. But something about tinkling—the colors, the sounds—makes you remember: Yellow Jacket football today!

You put on your best yellow sweater and yellow knee-socks, though you call them “gold,” natch. Then, moving to the dresser, you specially polish your thick glasses, adding one final flourish—fresh tape wrapped around the bridge. Speaking of bridges, your braces are also polished to a fine sheen, new zits are popped, and you’re lookin’ GOOD! You’re lookin’ JACKET.

Heart pounding, you race up the steps from your parents’ basement. Mumsy and Pops are reading mail from the old home country in New Jersey where they hope to retire someday. You slip out the door quietly and pedal your 3-speed through the crisp autumn air, gameday flags a-flying from the handlebars. And there it is, just ahead—the MARTA station. It won’t be long now!

You climb onto a southbound train, your eyes scan the car, and—yes! There, sitting next to the chatty tranvestite—a man wearing YELLOW! You make your way over and wave your pom poms at him and giggle, and he says, “$#%^ off, %$$^&!” And now you feel it more strongly than ever—the essence of being a Tech fan. You giggle again more shrilly, dance away, then slide around safely under the seats until the stop at North Avenue, tee-heeing for all you’re worth as you elude the grasp of your tormentor and his switchblade. It’s sort of like Frodo hiding from the Black Riders, right here on MARTA!

You disembark at North Avenue, snatching quarters from a few homeless men, and take a deep breath of downtown Atlanta air—Tech air! Now you see swarms of other Jackets—two of them, three of them. It’s no wonder the stadium had to be expanded. You pause on the bridge over the Downtown Connector to indulge in a Tech tradition: spitting on cars passing underneath. It’s a massive traffic jam of red vehicles heading north, and you nail an RV with a big loogie from your morning Yoo Hoo Soda. Tee hee! Saliva, the GT calling card!

Then you’re on campus, a block from the stadium. You take in the grand pageantry that is game day. It’s the gray, smoggy sky; the deep blue of the police siren; the giggling of the frat boys enjoying an impromptu tickle pile on the sidewalk. It’s the sound of gunfire. It’s the beautiful women with their thick makeup, standing on the street corners and bantering with the passing cars. It’s the voice of Kim King, talking and talking and talking in his one-note melodic range; Wes Durham screaming about a one-yard gain. It’s the giant rubber bee, George O’Leary’s old bedroom toy, patched all over, making funny farting sounds as the air oozes out yet again. It’s Flag Boy, the aspiration of all Tech males. Tee hee!

Above all, it’s four notes on a trumpet. You hear them now, playing the hallowed music, the sacred music, the Hymn of the Bee. There it is now, and you lift your voice to join in, warm tears fogging your thick glasses. The whole stadium sings solemnly:

“When you say Bud…”

Those four notes on a trumpet, your call to Jackethood, setting your yellow heart aflutter. Deep down you know this is the year—the year you beat Duke AGAIN—you OWN Duke. The year you road-trip to a BRAND SPANKIN’-NEW STARTUP BOWL for the holidays. The year your first pubic hairs break the surface. This sacred moment cannot last. Someday, by the Great Pointed Ears of Leonard Nimoy, you will be in New Jersey. In Michigan. In North Dakota. Someday you will buy your parents a house with a bigger basemment for you to live in. But in your heart, you’ll always be a Tech Guy—a proud drop in the endless river of yellow!

Although I did not attend Georgia or Tech, I did graduate from college. It seems to me that Tech is the only school that I know of that takes great pride in not reaching out to non graduates as fans. Why?

By Doesn't Understand GT Fans

November 22, 2007 9:14 AM | Link to this

I have a serious question for Georgia Tech football fans: What’s the point? Honestly, why do you support this laughable joke of a program? All you talk about is academics and how much Georgia fans suck. That seems to be the purpose of your existance. I just don’t get it. You are too ashamed of your team to even talk about them in any substantial way. So again, what’s the point?

By Georgia Tech=JOKE

November 22, 2007 9:23 AM | Link to this

Why?, its because Tech fans have an inflated sense of self-importance and are arrogant pricks. If anybody needs to reach out to non-graduates is Georgia freakin’ Tech. Look at their pathetic stadium on a fall Saturday for a prime example. Yet, despite all their supposed smarts, they ridicule non-graduates. Meanwhile, their joke of a program continues to be relegated to second-tier December bowl games and these geniuses can’t figure out why. Its beyond hilarious.

Georgia has many non-graduate fans because it is the flagship university of the state of Georgia. Again, not that hard to figure out but Georgia Tech braniacs seem to struggle with it. Any state flagship university will have non-graduate fans. Georgia is not alone. This is especially true when the only other in-state option is the definition of mediocrity and has more Emerald bowl berths then it cares to discuss. Maybe if Georgia Tech football wasn’t such a pathetic joke you’d see more 16 year old girls with “GT” on the front of their cars.

Its that time of year again. Time for Tech fans to show what a bunch of arrogant, spoiled little cry babies they really are. Enjoy your beatdown this saturday.

By You are a clever man

Mark,

I guess you believe the old saying…”if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” I say this considering UGA crushed your Alma Mater this year. I do understand your motivation….job security.

If GT happens to upset UGA on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if you give the young men credit. I’d put a hundo on it that you try to talk about everything other than this particuar game, i.e. fan base, postseason bowl direction, revenue for athletic associations, overall record, etc……basically, everything but the game itself.

Even though you are most concerned about job security above all else, I’m sure you are a really nice guy. Happy Thanksgiving.

By my name most will be able to tell that I am a GT alumnus. I am a native of Atlanta and I grew up following both GT and UGA, but preferred GT, and went to school there, and never had any interest or desire to go to UGA because I was more interested in architecture and engineering.

Having said that, UGA is a fine school and I have many friends and relatives who either attended or are fans of UGA.

This whole discussion of which school is better is ridiculous and tiresome. It reminds me of grade school boys arguing about whose daddy could beat up the other’s. Grow up, and get some real perspective on life and the world.

If one took the time to actually do some research on Rhodes Scholarship winners, one would have found that that’s exactly what they have already done. They can actually see beyond their football team and university to the larger concerns of the world we live in, and they do something about it. They are highly accomplished people whose minds are engaged with real-world issues, not stupid football games or teams.

That’s exactly why they are Rhodes Scholars, and why not one of them would ever waste their time on something as inconsequential as an argument about whose school is better or whose football team is better. Get a life, and while you’re at it, try to get a good education, instead of focusing so much attention, energy and hate on each other.

What is a person such as yourself doing reading a blog on something as insignificant as a football game? This blog is for fans of the game. As dawg fans we enjoy bashing the bugs with current history of the game, while nerds fire back with academic insults (it’s all they have).
It just so happens that this year Dawg fans can fire both football jabs and academic jabs.
It’s the year of the DAWG!

Oh, and to “nascarsux”: sure buddy - Our Rhodes Scholars would have a B average at Tech? Out of 32 nationally, UGA had two. Other universities with two: Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford and St Olaf. Score: UGA 2, GT: 0. You are an arrogant fool.

I thought the way these “articles” were supposed to work was you would make a statment about one, and then a shot at the other side. Then reverse the roles. The problem with this years it is completely one sided.

With so much bad news about UGA and the football team this year, why not a single shot taken at them.

NO comment on the Stafford/cox spooning pics on the net. The stafford/moreno drunk pics. The wrong way scooter driving. Bball players kicked off team. Bball players with knifes in ther dorm rooms. Search warrents for pot. Jumping ont he logo at Vandy. Getting blown out by Tenn. Tons of personal foul penalties, and a coach.program who cannot control his players behavior on or off the field.

But I guess dusting off old Gailey or Reggie jokes is easier, and you dont run the risk of p*ssing off the dogs.

If you choose to admit or not, you article is 100% one sided this year.

I think you have finally gone over the line in one-sided journalism (sic).

If GT happens to upset UGA on Saturday, it will be interesting to see if you give the young men credit. I’d put a hundo on it that you try to talk about everything other than this particuar game, i.e. fan base, postseason bowl direction, revenue for athletic associations, overall record, etc….basically, everything but the game itself.

Even though you are most concerned about job security above all else, I’m sure you are a really nice guy. Happy Thanksgiving.

Funny story - Navy goes down and upsets Tech, IN Atlanta in the fall of 1996. Several bus loads of us, USNA students and players who didn’t dress, were in the stands that day for that amazing game. How did we leave the stadium? We were pelted - PELTED - with full glasses of coke, soda, “other drinks”, etc, by obnoxious tech alumni and jacka** fans that ruined our uniforms and put 2 mids in the hospital to get stitches. Had it not been for some amazing USMC leadership with us and some real composure by the midshipmen, we would have been involved in a 400 man brawl.

I suited up and played against Army. I wanted to beat Army so much I could taste it every day. But I always respected them. Tech has done NOTHING to earn or deserve one shred of respect

The b**s from GA Tech have a MASSIVE inferiority complex. A school comprised of arrogant, holier than thou dorks who rest on their “you’re going to work for me someday” laurels and the arguement of “at least our stadium is filled with folks who went there” (which translates into “no one else from the state likes us” by the way).

Bottom line - No one cares how well you play “Magic the Gathering”…Tech fans & grads have ZERO class — never have and never will.

I PRAY TO GOD that Paul Johnson, a man of class, integrity, honor, and full of drive to develop “student athletes” in the truest sense doesn’t go coach “those people” at Tech. They are a lower class of human.

I am not a UGA fan, but I pray that UGA hangs 100 on Tech EVERY YEAR - just to make then cry for 365 more days about how much “better” they are at everything they do - when I know truthfully, deep down, how second-rate those people really are.

P**s on Tech.

I am surprised that “The Big Bug” called me a moron because I had a much higher SAT score and GPA than my classmates who went to GA Tech (at my 10 year reunion they stuck together, and everyone wondered why 10 years later they were still nerds).

I think I hit a nerve because “The Big Bug” says that the Rhodes Scholar committee favors the students from schools that have never had a Rhodes Scholar. I guess that is why Harvard and Yale have recipients every year. Having taken “The Big Bug“‘s advice and looked it up I found that Techies have received Rhodes Scholarships in 1951, 2001, and 2005. UGA has had 21 students named as Rhodes Scholars — that’s seven times the number that Tech has (you can look that up “Big Bug”). UGA’s debate team won the Copeland Trophy as the top team in the country this past academic year; Tech does not have a debate team (yes, I know the debate joke). To be honest I almost never hear any “We’re smarter” comments from Techies any more because most people know that it just doesn’t ring true any more.

“Big Bug” might consider counseling for his pent-up bitterness and inferiority complex — he definitely should book an appointment on Friday before the UGA game as I suspect a seventh straight loss to UGA will overwhelm the caregivers in and around Atlanta.

I thought rivalries were supposed to be friendly - just an annual game so that one school can have bragging rights for the year. It seems that it has turned for the worst and has become a war between two sides and unfortunately, I get the impression that it is fueled by UGA fans who have never even graced a classroom at the college (or maybe even any college). It is healthy to have a rivalry, but it gets dangerous when you start making personal attacks on people just because they go to a school (whether it is GT or UGA). Both are great schools at what they are known for (whether it be engineering at Tech or Debate teams at UGA).

Grow up. Shut up and just watch the damn game Saturday.

By far the funniest thing on here are UGA people making the argument that UGA is as good of or better an education than TECH because UGA has more rhodes scholars. That is just a joke!

First of all, in order to get the scholarship you have to have a high GPA. Hmmmm … just a guess, but I wonder how hard it is to get that kind of GPA at UGA as compared to TECH?

Let’s take a look shall we: To graduate with highest honors from UGA you have to have a 3.9 GPA while at Tech you only need a 3.55. Now we could say that is because more people at UGA have high GPAs so they have to raise the minimum standard to get honors.

But if everyone has higher GPAs, wouldn’t that mean that UGAs curriculum is easier? Wouldn’t this be contrary to your initial argument that UGA is a better education? On the other hand you could say that UGA students are just “bright” like that … but if we are honest we all know that is a lie.

The reason in the disparity in honors distinguishment is because UGA is easier. More people are able to attain higher GPAs at UGA because it is easier. These higher GPAs look good on paper for scholarship applications such as the rhodes scholarship. If someone has a 4.0 at Tech or UGA, they will look the same on paper but we all know (if we are honest) that the 4.0 at Tech is much more difficult to attain on average. Just look at the curriculum on-line and you have to agree.

Tech is the tougher school and the better school overall. The only reason to go to UGA is if you want to study agriculture …

One more thing, the reason UGA usually has better athletics is because they can bring in better athletes and hide them in crap majors. At Tech, our athletes cannot hide anywhere! You UGA fans joke about our management degree but it is better then your business degree which you guys think is the greatest thing since spray cheese.

The easiest major at tech is probably International Affairs or HTS. At UGA they have a leisure studies major…. LEISURE STUDIES! Are you F’ing kidding me! One of my friends at UGA is in this major and her homework one time was to figure out activities to do with a hula-hoop. ARE YOU F’ING KIDDING ME! At tech, we have NOWHERE to hide our athletes thus it is harder for us to bring in the best.

Academically, UGA is a complete joke compared to Tech overall. But instead of looking at facts and figures UGA fans choose to look at an isolated incident of rhodes scholars to try to establish some sort of academic validity. Quit playing with yourselves while you look at pictures of UGA V1 licking his own balls and do some research.

It’s sort of difficult NOT to whine when we are the victims of such one-sided opinions. I’m sure Tech fans feel the same when reading the AJC sportspage as a Republican does when he/she reads a Cynthia Tucker opinion piece. Reading opinion that has no real independence in thought is not really much fun for the side being pummeled.

Mark Bradley is a hack — but his populist pieces that attack GT are greatly appreciated by the Dawg readers of the paper. I would firmly agree with an earlier reply: it wouldn’t be so bad if the article had actually been funny. I like to laugh at myself, but this sophmoric attempt at humor just had me asking myself if I could somehow recover the time spent reading something so base and unintelligent.

I do find it funny that there are so many mentions of the fact that UGA has more Rhodes Scholars than Tech. Seeing that the number of engineering graduates apply for that “largely liberal arts” secondary degree, it makes just as much sense as bragging that Tech graduates more engineers than UGA. Well, for all the history majors now Rhodes Scholars, I just hope they will teach these brilliant young minds what to do if there is a spill on aisle 6.
