Missing the big one

Terence Moore

Given the season, we should be thankful for so many things, even when it comes to sports. For instance: Just think of all the historically significant events you’ve witnessed as a fan. (Oh, and feel free to share those moments on this Thanksgiving Eve with your blogs).

Anyway, in three decades as a sports journalist, I’ve seen plenty of such moments. They’ve ranged from the overall dominance of Team USA in the ’84 Olympics to Sid Bream’s sprint and slide to Notre Dame’s football team (back when Notre Dame had a football team) stopping Miami’s 36-game winning streak during the regular season to Dominique scoring 57 points at the Omni while His Airness managed 41 to Cal Ripken breaking Lou Gehrig’s endurance record to the Music City Miracle.

It’s just that …

THE BAND WAS ON THE FIELD! — but I wasn’t in the pressbox.

I’m still bummed.

This week marks the 25th anniversary of Cal’s romp through the players and the band members of Stanford for the wackiest ending ever in sports. I could have been there. I should have been there.

Well, you know what they say about hindsight.

Here’s the deal: I was working for the San Francisco Examiner at the time covering the Oakland Raiders. I officially was off that Saturday of the annual Big Game between Cal and Stanford, but my sports editor gave me the option of staying off or writing a side story from the game.

Let’s see, I thought. Should I enjoy any of the wonderful things that the Bay Area has to offer on this sun-splattered Saturday afternoon, or should I forfeit my off day to write about something involving two mediocre football teams?

D’oh!

THERE’S A REASON YOU WERE GIVEN THE DAY OFF UNCLE TOM(terence)MOORE.

JUST LIKE THERE’S A REASON YOU DON’T WORK ON THE WEST COAST ANYMORE.

TALK ABOUT KEEPING YOUR NOSE IN THE MIRROR.

While TM may not be one of my most favorite AJC writers, I hate reading the old home town blogs and seeing all the bigotry from both sides in all the sports posts. As for events, I was at Fulton County Stadium when the Braves came back to beat the Reds to set the modern record for most consecutive wins to start a season at 13. The event I wish I had been there for? Wish I could have seen Lewis Grizzards last tennis match…..

Sorry about all the reposts. I kept getting an error when I tried to post and didn’t think it went thru.

Hey, ATLfaninCali: next time you post a comment, one sumission will do rather than five in a row that all say the same thing. Also, hate (no pun intended) to break it to you but bigotry is a fact of life as we are all biogted about something. Get over it!

I think that my most memorable event in sports was the 1991 playoffs and World Series. Everyone in Atlanta was behind the Braves. People were worn out from lack of sleep, but there was electricity in the air, and the Braves drew from it. So, the Twins reversed the fans in the dome, and that was enough to get the winning run over the fence. That is one loss that I can’t get over.

I’m thankful that as a kid I saw Jacklie Robinson play in 1947 in Ebberts Field. I also saw Ted Williams play against Joe D. at Yankee Stadium. I’m thankful I got to go to the Braves-Twins world series. I’m thankful I got to go to the baseball hall of fame twice. I’m thankful I got to go to super bowl 30 between the Steelers and Cowboys. These were all dreams I never was sure I would get to fulfill but I did.

I am thankful that, as a boy, I was there live to see Tim Mazetti kick 5 field goals (all of the Falcons’ points) as we beat the Rams on Monday Night Football. I still remember using my binoculars to watch Howard Cosell upclose and marveling how big his ears were!

I am thankful I saw Eddie Johnson and Terry Furlow rolling around the Omni floor in utter joy (chemically induced?) after the Hawks beat the Bullets in a late 70’s playoff game.

I am thankful that, as a boy, I met third-round pick William Andrews during his first Sewanee training camp in ‘79 and said, “You played for Auburn, right?” And he said with a big smile, “You’re about the only person who knows that.”

Give Mr. Moore a break. He has written a lot of articles I didn’t like & a lot I did. A good Writer writes to give you something to think about, whether you agree or not. He wouldn’t be a good Writer if he tried to make everyone happy. He is not a Homer. He writes what he feels. Yeah, I’m southern & white and a UGA Guy, but I am not a bigot. If I think he writes a lousy or good article, so be it. Why does ESPN interview Mr. Moore when they interview someone from the Atlanta Papers?

I’m thankful we won at least one world series and went one Super Bowl even if we did lose.

I don’t guess most of you bloggers ever heard of Lewis Grizzard.

He wrote coulmns for the AJC back when people actually read the newspaper.

Maybe that’s the problem, back then we could not wirte back with our own comments gogd or bad in response to something a writer said.

TM knows what I’m talking about when I mention Lewis and Furman and how they wrote columns that you may or may not have agreed with but they made you think and most of the time made you laugh so when you finished the column you were not angry and spewing hatred like I see today.

Guys like TM and Schultz and even Bradley are not evil men, “well maybe Bradley” ..just kidding ..they give their opinions and we laugh or cry or whatever, but people don’t take it so seriuosly and pesonally.

Lord I just want to say thank you for letting me wake up every morning, I can’t ask for anymore than that other than a little less hatred.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYBODY!!!
