Season on its way to disintegration
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse for this strikingly clueless bunch of Falcons, ranging from team officials to coaches to those in shoulder pads, along came Sunday at the Georgia Dome. They all spent four of the ugliest quarters in recent memory discovering that rock bottom actually has a basement.
Silly quarterback play.
Mindless penalties to negate possible huge switches in momentum.
Crazy strategy (pick one, but how about that toss sweep on fourth-and-1 that predictably failed?).
Dropped passes.
Another brutal outing by an invisible offensive line.
Matador defense (I mean, Earnest Graham, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ third-string running back, torched these guys for 102 yards rushing and a touchdown).
Even worse, those who bothered to show up to watch the Falcons’ plunge to 3-7 and counting spent much of the afternoon booing or chanting “Joey, Joey, Joey,” as in the overmatched quarterback who was replaced going into the game by Byron Leftwich, another overmatched quarterback, who was yanked for Harrington, still an overmatched quarterback.
So the present and the future are like this for the Falcons after their self-inflicted thrashing of 31-7 at the mediocre hands of Tampa Bay: Purgatory is wherever the Falcons are now in their 42nd year of existence, and hell is on the way.
“We didn’t come out with the mind-set to play hard for four quarters,” said running back Warrick Dunn, delivering the understatement of the year. Added Leftwich, referring to his wretched performance and that of the entire team, “To be honest with you, I’ve never been involved with something like this.”
Has anybody? You know, even when it comes to this franchise? “Ooh. Ooh,” said former Falcons great Gerald Riggs, easing into a chuckle, while squinting in the home locker room afterward as a local NFL television analyst. “Let’s just say this game took me back a long way. Really, I haven’t seen this type of performance from a Falcons team in a long time.”
Just so you know, during Riggs’ seven years as a prolific runner for the Falcons in the 1980s, they managed an average of five victories per season. That included a 3-12 finish in 1987 under the forgettable Marion Campbell. Riggs laughed, saying, “We were just bad. We didn’t have good choices with players, coaches, anything. We didn’t have the pieces, and I think they have the pieces to do well. My biggest concern with this team is injuries. They’re injuries away, but we were players away. I just think these coaches have to win these players over with what they’ve implemented.”
Not likely. Rightfully or wrongfully, large portions of the Falcons locker room weren’t pleased with either rookie NFL head coach Bobby Petrino or his schemes even before the season, and nothing has changed. Leaders of Iran and Israel communicate better than Falcons players with Petrino. Among other things, a stunned Harrington discovered he probably wasn’t starting this week from an AJC reporter.
Then there is Petrino’s decision-making that often comes straight from his successful years of running the University of Louisville. In other words, he often coaches as if he’s still in college. You have that Steve Spurrier thing, for instance, where college guys love to mix and match their quarterbacks throughout the season and during games. The thing is, NFL coaches don’t do that, but here is Petrino playing musical chairs between Leftwich and Harrington with no end in sight. Here is Petrino also contradicting himself on this cockamamie process.
At the end of last week, Petrino emphatically mentioned that he would decide whether Harrington or Leftwich would start against the Buccaneers. After Leftwich fumbled twice, threw a couple of interceptions, suffered three sacks and was booed out of the game by the Falcons’ increasingly angry home crowd, Petrino quickly said, “The staff made the decision to start [Leftwich].” As for the Falcons’ Thanksgiving Day game on Thursday against the Indianapolis Colts, Petrino said, “I cannot tell you when that decision is going to be made right now.”
There was no mention of Petrino making the decision by himself this time. Sounds like the blame game for the Falcons is in its infant stages, because it sounds like confusion reigns.

Once again, Moore proves his complete ignorance, and his only want is to try and distabilize the coaching regime in Flowery Branch so his overmatched (nice word, T) and underwhelming coaching homie from Cincinnatti can come here and draft some no-character, high talent guys like DHall.
Moore… Petrino never flip-flopped QBs as a college coach. For you to suggest that is asinine and shows a plain lack of research and good journalism, though we know that the name Terence Moore and the phrase good journalism have never come into contact.
Dude, the season is over. He’s trying to figure out who to hold onto for next year.
Grady Jackson is already gone because he didn’t do what he was told and was on his own program. You decried the move, but does anyone think it was coincidence that when Trey Smith was made the starter in his place, the defense played better and the Falcons won two games in a row?
Do you mention that the defense got “torched” (since when is 100 yards a torching, Moore?) when Smith and Coleman went down with injury?
Moore, your racist tactics against Petrino are stale and transparent. We all know you want the low character Marvin Lewis to come down to Atlanta because of your Ohio ties and because he’s black.
But you’re not going to get your way. So you only continue to make yourself look worse and worse with every word you type.

Stop complaining, you got the team you wanted, the hard nose coach you wanted, you stood on your platform with PETA and helped run Vick out of town, maybe they will show up at the games. Maybe you should go back and read some of your columns, you were clueless then and still are. Instead of blaming Petrinio, blame your self righteous azz. You have got tobe the worst columnist there is. Please write about something you know or understand, like maybe Bob Knight or some of the interviews you did with him. I am OUT

I’m telling ya, Bobby Petrino is the wrong guy for this job. His first mistake was scrapping the offensive blocking scheme w/out first replacing the smallish parts with larger, more durable blockers.
From there, and with Vick gone, we lost everything about our running game that worked. Yeah, the blocking was gimmicky, but it was successful between the 20s, even if it didn’t always stand up in the red zone.
We never addressed the line deficiencies and while signed Mughelli to be that bruising fullback option inside the red zone, we sure as hell never use him for that.
We have two capable NFL-veteran QBs who aren’t mobile, and yet they play behind an O-line built for a mobile quarterback and slant cut-blocking for smallish RBs, but of course, are tasked to block like they’re built for a power running game.
What a mess. And it all starts with the head coach, frankly. Our defensive coordinator, in general, is the smartest coach we have, and our “offensive genius” for a head coach has us flailing like a cockroach on its back.
I talked w/Bobby Hebert (former Falcons’ and Saints’ QB) before the season started, and he genuinely believed the Falcons had the talent to pull of a 7-9 or 8-8 “surprise” season out of the post-Vick mess. His reasons were simple; we had a good defense and still had ample run-game weaponry to go with a QB who wasn’t horrible for a horrible Dolphins team last year and was throwing to young, but talented recievers who’d be following veteran guidance from Joe Horn.
Hebert, to me, had no idea that Bobby Petrino was gonna ruin it by scrapping the o-line blocking scheme; I’m sure he also had no idea what horrible communicator and leader he was, either.
What this team needs is a tough-love coach. What we got was a “tough-$#%t” coach.

Wild Bill… are you SERIOUS?
I’m sorry, but when did Falcons fans “ask” Michael Vick to break the law?
This has nothing to do with PETA, and everything to do w/principles. How did we “run” Vick outta town? Did you listen to his speech when he admitted his guilt, himself, and apologized for what he’d done to his team?
Get a clue, dude.

Petrino has no clue what he’s doing. Benching Harrington in favor of Lefwich made no sense — Harrington had earned the right to start this week with his performances in the last couple of games, especially after hanging tough last week and delivering the winning TD pass while getting drilled.
Hey Blank, how about offering refunds to all season ticket holders? If you sold a circular saw at Home Depot that worked as well as the Falcons, you’d be giving out refunds hand over fist (not to mention reimbursing customers who cut off body parts when the blade repeatedly flew off).

NASCARfan,
I’m all on board with the sentiment that Terence Moore is an ignorant idiot. But I beg to differ about the season being over. Well, maybe it is now.
However, going into this game we still had a good shot at taking the division had we turned things around and won today. We would have been only one game out of the division race. I know, the only reason we were still in it is because the entire division sucks this year. But we were still in it none the less.
And that’s part of my problem with today’s game. It seems to me that coach Petrino and the team mailed it in. Especially coach Petrino. He is so arrogant and his ego so large that he was not able to admit his mistake of starting Leftwich so soon. It took him almost 3 full quarters of that garbage to realize Leftwich wasn’t getting it done. Had he switched quarterbacks sooner we might have been able to get back into the game.
Byron was terrible! Sure, he has a better arm than Joey. But if he hasn’t had many practices with the team and hasn’t built up a rapport with the receivers, it doesn’t matter how strong his arm is. He was so confused out there that he didn’t know what to do with the ball. That’s why he stood there and took so many sacks/hits/etc. Thus the fumbles and interceptions. If 60,000 fans… If that many, knew he didn’t have it then why didn’t the coach.
My bet is he did but his large ego got in the way.

Get real Ron, what did you guys think would happen without Vick, when did principle and winning ever go together, I been a falcons fan since 66, with Vick at least we had a chance of winning. That was the reasons for us to pull for Vick, when you guys were talking principle we were talking about the possiblity of wins. Principle don’t get wins, only days like this, no matter what Vick did, I for one, will always be a fan of his and the falcons. I didn’t see PETA buying falcons tickets last week when we had a blackout, maybe they should have stepped up to the plate.

Can we have our money back already. This had to be among the top 3 ugliest games ever played by a Falcons team and even an NFL team. The Dolphins haven’t won a game, but at least have an excuse of no talent and try are at least trying. They will blame all of this on the loss of Vick, but he would not have helped today. Maybe all the p** off season ticket holders should get together and collectively file a lawsuit against the Falcons to get our money back. Mr. Blank…thanks for everything!!!

Wild Bill,
Were you even reading what Ron wrote. Lets see, what do we have to say to explain this so you understand?
What Vick did was ILLEGAL. He has plead GUILTY. Which in case you need it in more detail “Guilty means he said he did it”.
I don’t believe my employer would allow me to keep my job if I plead guilty to federal charges and was about to go to prison. Maybe we can write a letter to the warden and ask him nicely if Vick can come out and play next year. If he says no just tell him it was just a few dogs and besides, its all about winning, right? I’m sure he’ll change his mind.
Come on, enough with the Vick apologists!

Normally I think that TM is a blow hard and I tend to dismiss him for that fact.
That being said, I think he is on the mark with a number of things. I have been a Falcons fan from the time when my parents would take me and my brother to games at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and I cant remember a performance this horrible from a team.
I am not a fan of Leftwich nor Harrington although I think Joey is the better QB at this time. Byron showed today why he was cut down in Florida.
All of the blame cant be lumped onto the QB’s though. The offense line has one function and one function only, keep the badguys off of the good guys long enough for the good guys to make something happen.
THESE DUDES ARE NOT DOING THAT!!!!!!! You cant make plays when you are being hurried, hit, rushed and/or sacked every friggin down.
The defense is trying to save this team and I think that is a shame. Those guys deserve better play from the other side of the ball.
Finally, Petrino. I was intrigued when it was announced that he would become the head coach of the team. I thought he would bring something fresh and new but all it seems he has brought is misery.
Do you want a tip as to how you could know that you have lost a long time fan? My wife and I were in our car tonight going to dinner and I flipped the radio station to the game.
After about a minute I changed it back to jazz. The Mrs. told me that I could turn it back and that it didnt bother her. I waved my hand and kept it on jazz.
Fellas y’all better do something or else there are going to be a lot more blacked out games. No one has enough money to keep flushing down the toilet on these guys.

Leftwich gave the worst performance ever from an athlete in for any of Atlanta’s miserable franchises. He did not resemble a professional athlete and seemed to even have trouble maneuvering without falling with a three step drop. He makes Chris Chandler look like Michael Flatley.
Petrino is actually amusing. The whole no emotion act like Belichek only works when you win. Oh yeah, I forgot he did argue a call after they were down 24-0.

I truly hope that Petrino is on his way out this season, preferrably sooner than later. Surely Blank can go with his hat in hand to Dan Reeves and convince him to come back. If that isn’t possible, maybe he can talk Bill Cowher into coming out of retirement. This is no time to train newbies out of college, we need an experienced NFL coach here.
As for the starting QB for Thursday’s game, I really hope Joey Harrington gets the call. He definitely has shown he deserves it.

It is time to clean house MR Blank. First off who went after this college coach to begin with. If it was McKay he should be fired. If it was you maybe you can take a leason from this and keep your hands out of the day to day operations of this football team. Mr Blank you want to turn this program around then get rid of McKay and this so called NFL coach. Hell Tech needs a new head man let him go there. Then hire Bill Cowher and get out of the way. Let him run the whole thing. I bet he can pick better players to help this team then McKay had done. And he is already a proven coach. We need a major change here or you will see the Dome empty for years to come. I have been a season ticket holder since 1988 and this Tampa Bay game is as close to Fulton County days as I can remember. We just plan SUCK.

I’ve just got to chuckle at the comment that somehow, what 53 other players do and what plays Petrino calls and who McKay brings in, is in anyway Mike Vick’s fault…no its not, he has nothing to do with the Falcons sucking this season other than the fact that he’s not here to continue to carry the franchise on his back and shoulder all the blame for the rest of the franchise’s failings. But I know she’s just a dumb ol’ girl, ‘cause the Falcons couldn’t find the endzone with even Columbus or that Sherlock — what’s his name, the English fella? — to hep ‘em!

Lisa is dumb, the reason that we started 6-2 in those years were because of vick carrying the team on his shoulders and the reason that we went 2-6 the last half of the year was because of the amount of weight that he had to carry….when his shoulders got tired of carrying the team, we started to see a little bit of what we are seeing every week now…if you people remember correctly, Moss and T.O> both stated that they wasnt to come to atlanta to play with VICK!!!!…but nooooooo, they dotn pass this so called falcon fliter that we have, so instead of giving vick a top notch receiver, all most people did was blame vick….i never once, not one single time, see terrence moore write about the o-line not blocking for vick, the receivers not catching the ball, etc…back then it was always “vick throws the ball too hard for the receivers(he has no touch), the o-line cant block for him because they never know where he is , etc….it was ALWAYS vick’s fault and yet now, with the same players, its somehow the whole teams fault….

We just got a glimpse of Petrion’s arrogant obstinance in his decision making. He started Big Byron over the guy who has quarterbacked 2 straight wins and all of the team’s wins. Big Byron supposedly has a “big arm”….what good does that do when all you throw is little dinks and dunks against a defense that left the middle of the field open. The one long pass opportunity we had, Big Byron missed a wide open receiver.
As much as Black Atlanta wants to keep a black QB playing ‘til their man Vick returns, we better start playing the best guy we have and then find us a high quality front line guy….regardless of skin tone.
Leftwich sucks, the play calling sucks, the blocking sucks, the receivers suck…..hell, I’m surprised Elton John doesn’t want to buy the team.

Look on the bright side…we will be in a better DRAFT position!
Hope we take Darren McFadden from Arkansas or some other fast bruising runner. Hope we do not take a quarterback in the first round…they rarely live up to their draft position.

For those of you looking for real football - attend a 5A playoff game this weekend - Grayson at Norcross for example - well coached kids, true DI signees and prospects executing and playing with emotion. You’ll have enough money to buy the kids a meal and enjoy some really good football. You’ll be reminded of why you love football in the first place!

Damn Terrence. The Falcons absolutely sucked yesterday yet some of the redneck yahoos here are coming after you for stating the truth. Lets see, dropped balls, bad offensive line, bad play calling, etc. Sounds like the same scenario as when Vick was here. Tom Brady could not have won yesterday with the Falcon’s OL. Harrington should be glad that he did not have to play. When he did come in, it looked like the same team to me….bad. Why not blame everybody for this. There is something terribly wrong with this team beginning with the coaching. I do not think that the players and the coaches are on the same page. You can not treat pro athletes like college players. They will not respond in a positive way as witnessed Sunday.
I just knew that before long that race, black QB’s and thugs would be brought into the mix. I like black QB’s as they bring excitement to the game. Hell, I like black anything.
I have a solution, lets have an all white football team here in Atlanta and move the stadium to Gwinnett or Cobb. That would eliminate a lot of the issues raised in this blog. We will not win any football games, but maybe we will not carry our dislike for each other along racial lines over to the football field.

You guys seriously can’t believe that this was Leftwich’s fault here. The line is non-existent, the receivers are back to their normal ball-dropping selves, and the questionable play calling in short yardage situations are MAJOR factors. Not to mention the fact that Tampa usually hands the Birds their seat anyway. It didnt matter who was in there. If it was Scare-ington, the result would have been a call for Leftwich. It just happened to be vice versa. Were fans actually chanting “Joey”? Are we that desperate for a win that we’ll uplift the dregs of the league. Many Atlanata fans are incompetent when it coms to these things. With our fair weather fans, we’ll never sniff another Super Bowl and the playoff drought’s gonna be worse than our REAL one.

In addition to moving the Falcons to the suburbs, lets move the Braves to the suburbs also. An organization that feels that a 42 year old pitcher who leaves the franchise is worth $8 million dollars a year and is more important than a 30 year old outfielder who plays every day sends me a message. Am I bitter, hell yeah!!!

The Peter Principle is in full swing from top to bottom in this organization. Vick’s leaving only demonstrates what a fragile team the Falcons are. They can’t take two steps without falling all over themselves. Get rid of Petrino. He looks as clueless as the rest of the team.

Hey, Davenpoop-for-brains, I’m not sure where you get your info, but Michael Vick has NEVER been the MVP of the NFL.
To the contrary, he was a mediocre player with mediocre stats and a mediocre record in 2005 and 2006.
In the meantime, how did your boy Byron do on Sunday? I’m sure you’ll find a way to blame his performance on somebody else.
BTW, has anybody ever seen Fat Albert and Byron Leftwich in the same place at the same time?

Everyone in this city is so quick to jump ship on the Atlanta sports franchises, especially the Falcons. We all knew that once they lost Vick the season was in jeopardy, so why are we surprised that this college coach is having a tough time. He failed to win over the veteran players during training camp and has lost ground since. He needs to learn better communication skills with his players, and please draft a capable quarterback and find some lineman.

One of the moderators, some guy called Rev Hal, on atlfalcons.com message board criticized the coaching decisions to start Leftwich this past week, I posted that he was wrong to do so. For defending the coaches and team, I got BANNED from the atlfalcons.com message board. This tells me that being a Falcon Fan since 1966 is a negative when the atlfalcons.com moderators BAN long time fans who still support the team. That is my confirmation that an INTERNAL MELTDOWN is fully underway inside the Falcon’s Organization. It is pretty bad when the franchise’s “support” message board moderators are criticizing managment, owners and coaches and BANNING long time fans who defend this enigma we call the Atlanta Falcons.
Rev Hal has always done this. Better not disagree with him or he will ban you.
Just like a bunch of other coniving preachers, he buttered up a lot of people in the name of God to start with, got the popularity to get power, then treats people like sinners if they disagree with him and misuses his power to get what he wants by getting rid of them.
Keith, It is a sad day for the Falcons when the moderators on the Falcon support website are the ones who start threads that openly BASH THE TEAM and BAN LOYAL MEMBERS who defend the team. This rev Hal guy said I was banned because I “called him out with the intent to embarrass him.” “INTENT???” Is this guy a mind reader like Miss Cleo? How does he know what I am thinking? God must have given him psychic powers, no? Sunday night another moderator with the initials “BB” was making posts critical of MY team and said he would boycott the Colt’s game, this was openly suggesting doing the same to the users on the message board. These guys are there to help with support YET they are suggesting boycotting the game by season ticket holders. These so called “moderators” are employees of the Falcon Team, whether paid or volunteer employees they represent the FALCONS in a positive non critical way or have no opinion, and should NOT be suggesting boycotting games for season ticket holders and FALCON fans. This is a MUTINY from within the organization’s support website. Rather than helping the FALCONS they are BANNING loyal fans from posting on the message board and screaming FIRE in a theatre. Is this the kind of FACE that Arthur Blank needs now or at any time? I am posting this because these moderators are killing my TEAM from within and it needs to be known how LOW CLASS the people working for Mr Blank really are. Arthur, can you hear me??? I feel certain that he is not aware that his own so-called employees are aligning the fanbase against the Falcon Team that he is trying to build. This should be KNOWN and it should be HEARD. These Falcon SUPPORT moderators are helping KILL this TEAM. I am just letting people know yet another reason this FALCON TEAM is IMPLODING from within.

Folks, The issues have nothing to do with racism. Vick should be gone. Harrington is and will never be the answer for success. The falcons are simply a team that was poorly put together by McKay and Blank. This team refuses to go after quality players. Remember the Super Bowl team. It was a team put together with proven veterans and a mix of young talent. You need both. At this time, I am convinced that Rich McKay (some Mora influence) has compiled a group of players that are simply not competitive by NFL standard. Why? I do not know, but I cant blame Petrino for the talent he has. Thats on McKay. I do blame Petrino for pitching backwards on a 4th and 1. That was bad. He has got to step his game up or go. The falcons really need a veteran coach. Probably should have kept Dan Reeves. I think things would have been more competitve with him. McKay has to go. Blank, just keep on trying; but please do not be afraid of Veterans(coaches, GM s, and players).

Everyone needs to get off of petrino’s back. He came to atlanta thinking he had a mobile quarterback with a stong are only to end up with two immobile qb’s one with no arm and one with a strong arm and no touch. Jimmy Johnson lost with Dallas his first year so we need to stop hammering bobby every week. He will add a QB thru Free agency or the draft and will have more money to spend on free agency this year. Give him 3 seasons and if he is not winning then change. What coach would be winning with those two QB’s and that revamped o-line. We have a good D coming back and that is a start. IF you think Vick is great(which I once thought he was) just look at his W-L the last two seasons with Atlanta. I am a huge Vick fan, and I would love to have him as compared to what we have now but this team is not that far away. We lost 4 games by 7 points or less, with a better QB and kicker we are probably at least 5 - 5. People are also critical of Petrino changing the run blocking scheme, yes we led the league in rushing last year but in short yardage we sucked because we were too small to drive the pile back. We needed to change to get bigger O-lineman like jacksonville and tenessee. The new lineman bobby wants will take 2 drafts and free agency to build. Remember Vick running for his life, that is because our line was too small to block for him. Bobby needs at least 3 seasons to show his worth, and unlike other college coaches he was a coordinator(successful one at that) with Jacksonvill

As usual I find T-Moore to be very similar to Michael Moore in that he likes to brush up against the truth, while attempting to incite controversy with nonsensical issues. It’s not the coaching. This team was bad last year and now we’re seeing that a lot of the offensive line issues were masked by an extremely athletically gifted QB that could scramble and avoid most of the sacks that our current QB’s cannot. Joey and Byron are not the answer. Even with a good O-line Joey’s arm is limited and Byron’s long/slow delivery will always prevent him from succeeding. However, it really wouldn’t matter who is at QB. Our O-line needs an overhaul, we need a feature back to compliment Norwood. I love Dunn but he’s past his prime. Make him the RB coach. Our D has been bad for a while. We’ve had problems stopping the run for more than one season. Face it guys we’re looking at a true rebuilding project. We need a lot of players. I totally disagree with Gerald Riggs. We’re not just injuries away. We’re player away.

Now considering we are going to have a good draft pick. should we focus on the offensive line or draft are QB of the future.. I like Tim Tebow or Pat white they both have good arms and can make a play if the Offense Line breaks down

Arthur, please don’t wait until Petrino dismantles this team before showing him the exit door. He has already turned a good running game (even after substracting Vick’s running stats) into a joke. This so called “offensive genius” has already worn out his welcome with the players as well as the fans. (You can see it in Crumpler’s eyes) The defense has played well and keeps giving us a chance to win…but the offense has been horrible.
