Intense practices help Hawks turn it up

Terence Moore

Here’s another sign the Hawks are within a fastbreak of getting it: During the two practices after they hit the snooze button in their home loss on Sunday against a vulnerable Washington bunch, they were forced to wake up by the heavy hand of coach Mike Woodson. “It was like training camp,” said Al Horford, describing the tongue-wagging intensity of those sessions compared to the kinder, gentler one on Thursday at Philips Arena.

Yeah, they’re close to getting it, because after Woodson’s impromptu boot camp, the Hawks did something more impressive during this early season than shocking the Dallas Mavericks and the Phoenix Suns, both among the NBA mighty.

They spent Wednesday night at Philips Arena flattening the Charlotte Bobcats, among the NBA meek.

Now if the Hawks can do something similar tonight at home against the dreadful Seattle SuperSonics, who have sensational rookie Kevin Durant and nobody else, then maybe this really is a season of renaissance for these guys.

Consider this: Great NBA teams beat everybody. The good ones are less potent. In other words, those dribbling below the level of Michael Jordan’s Bulls or the Kobe-and-Shaq Lakers will send the elite to defeat on occasion while crushing foes with equal or lesser ability more often than not.

Bad teams lose to everybody, particularly to other bad teams. Even so, bad teams discover ways to conquer the good ones and scare the great ones.

That’s because it’s easy for bad teams to get hyped for the good and great ones. It’s even easier for those good and great ones to overlook bad teams.

Just ask the Hawks, among the league’s bad teams for eight seasons. They’ve spent recent years shocking the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat at home and the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers on the road. We’re talking about a Hawks team that hasn’t won more than 35 games in a season in a decade. We’re also talking about a Hawks coach who realizes in his fourth season that he has to keep telling his players what he has told them before: Keep the same intensity no matter what and against no matter who and no matter where.

Which makes you wonder: At 3-4, and with those relentless spurts for the Hawks during their 117-109 victory over Charlotte despite losing two starters to injury in the third quarter, do they finally understand Woodson’s eternal message?

“They better,” said Woodson, nodding from his office toward the locker room, where there was at least one person who understood well. It was Horford, off to a wonderful start in his rookie season after prospering on those University of Florida teams that won back-to-back national championships. Said Horford, “At Florida, we were always on edge, and that’s why I know how teams like Dallas approach a team like the Hawks. Teams like Dallas know that if they slip up, they can get exposed, which is why it’s important for us to be like that and get up for every game.”

Sounds like Woodson, all right, who added, “I think that when you’re not a seasoned team, and you’re a team that’s still learning how to play, other things start to creep in. As a coach, it’s my job to try and prevent that from happening.”

Still, Woodson can only plead. His players have to play, and not just when it comes to the league’s rich and famous.

“Those two games we had against Dallas and Phoenix were kind of an emotional high,” said Woodson, recalling packed houses of wired Hawks fans. Then there was a road game against Boston, where the Celtics were too much with their new Bird, McHale and Parrish called Garnett, Allen and Pierce.

“Then you go and lose a couple of games on the road [at New Jersey and Detroit], and they were playoff teams,” said Woodson, before sighing after recalling the Washington fiasco. “We were very lethargic and thought we were going to turn it on at the end, but it was too late. So we had those two [rough] days [of] practice, not so much to send a message, but to let guys know that we have to take things a little more seriously.”

Message heard.

For the moment.

That was a good win but losing Law may be a blow to the Psyche. Many do not appreciate Woodson’s “Old School” tough approch but I believe the players appreciate him. TM, are you over the “Mike Conley” wanted thing?

Can we please get an injury report on Speedy Claxton??? This guy was supposed to be the key to our ‘running’ style of play, yet we don’t even get an update on his timetable of return. Why is the organization so secretive about his status? Is it because they may actually have to admit that he’s a bust because they didn’t do enough research that would conclude that he was an injury risk before he came? I am assuming that these questions are being asked by our journalists.

Mr. Moore,

I’ve been reading you columns for awhile now and I’ve enjoyed them very much. I recently started my own blog and I’d love for you to read my work. Here is my blog address http://derekeadymedia.blogspot.com take care and if possible let me know what you think. God Bless

kaz, didn’t I just see you wrestle on tv just a few minutes ago lol? I don’t think the Hawks are trying to be secretive about Speedy’s injury, it’s just gotten to the point they no longer care about what he does and hope he goes away quietly.

As for losing Acie, I don’t think it will hurt them as much as losing a Josh Smith or Al Horford. Lue can step in with Anthony Johnson giving some minutes if needed. It will hinder his development but not by much.

TM, for once you actually wrote a good article. This team did respond to Woodson by laying out a 37 point first quarter on Charlotte. It seems to me that when the Hawks get up for an opponent they can run them off the floor. They now need to do that on the road if they want to get to the next level.

Let’s just hope Woody don’t have to run a military style practice after every three games for these grown professional players to get it. If so, we’ll be looking at the same record we had last year. They have to understand the game know and find an identity ASAP. If the Elite teams find a way to stop run we must know how to slow the ball down and efficiently run a half court set.

Joe Johnson needs to be a leader everynight. HE may not have to score 35 to 40 a night, but he need to be the floor general everynight. You knew you were coming here to be our version of KOBE. I don’t want to hear he’s quiet an leads by example. Guys respect and listens to the go-to-guy. I am not saying you have to scream and holler at people, just show a little more emotion and keep players like Josh Smith in control when he starts jackin up three’s. Put your arm around the rookies, encourage them after a mistake. (Notice: I did not say baby them, just encourage) Your $70mil contract requires it of you.

I love J-Smoove, but I would’nt sign him until he shows me that he can consistently play within the parameters of his own game or else he will be a project in the works for the rest of his career. You are in the mens’ league know, stop wining to the refs an complaining about trivial stuff. It’s takes your mind away from the game.

CUT SPEEDY!!!!!!!!! PAY HIM OFF< I DONT CARE!!! This is ridicules. Exactly how many games has he played in??? Someone please let me know. We could have another player in his spot giving valuable time on the floor.

Play SOLOMON and SALIM. It’s not like our starting five is the 96’ Bulls where they just can’t get off the bench. When other players are playing lethargic, how much is it going to hurt to play them.

LET”S GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Orlando-I hope you’re right about Speedy (it may be me wrestling if it involved Gabrielle Union and two midgets- don’t ask).

I just think that if the Hawks want to gain respect, the rest of the NBA community (fans included in that) need to feel like the Hawks are a no-nonsense organization that makes shrewd decisions to build a winning team. So far, we are not showing that.

I’m with Peter. Finally a reasonably positive article that I didn’t come away thing you were the biddest a$$ in the world.

It does seem like the hard practices paid off by raising the intensity level of the team leading to a great start versus Charlotte. If we can keep that intensity we’re going to send the so called ROY back to Seattle/OKC with an L!

Games like the Wizards game need to stop happening. This team is better than that physically and its up to the coach to have them like that mentally. I know they are young, but its time to grow up and I see that happeing a little now. These guys have a chance to be something REAL good in the next couple of seasons if they could pull it all together. Josh Smith, J Johnson, Horford, and NOW that Marvin Williams is FINALLY realizing his potential, this team can one day be elite. I just hope they get it all going. It’s going to be fun to watch!

GO HAWKS!!

p.s. Does anyone know how Acie law is doing?

Maybe Terrance is realizing that he can get just as many comments on his articles if he tells it like it is! Uptempo definitely suites this team. JJ is learning to utilize his teammates more and more. He’s not limited to settling for long, contested jumpshots late in the shot clock. He has Marvin knocking down the 20 footer, Harford waiting down low, and Chill slashing. Keep it coming baby!

Are you going to advocate for Gaylord Perry to be thrown out of the Hall of Fame? What about Mickey Mantle, he had no character (an admitted drunk)? Babe Ruth was no Father Flannighan either.

The reason Baseball is a mess is not only because of the drugs, but because they let the writers vote and we all know writers are the least objective people in sports.

I have seen you write some questionable things but I hope that you will see for yourself that being accused of something is a lot different than being convicted of it. I believe that Bonds took steroids, but the game did nothing about it. Bonds will be acquitted because if the Feds had a case, it would not have taken 3 years to bring charges. What will you write when he is cleared. Again, when you are charged with stealing something and you did not, I hope that you get the same consideration you gave Barry.

Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! I just heard this Terrence Moore on ESPN saying he would vote ‘NO’ for Barry Bonds not to go into the Hall of Fame. If Bonds doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame nobody does! Get real dude! Maybe you can’t as I’ve read what others have said about your comments. I live in AZ and I hope you never move here and embarrass us like you do Atlanta!

Penis enlargement procedures (sometimes referred to as “male enhancement procedures” in spam email and television advertisements) are techniques alleged to make the human penis larger.

A penis more than 2.5 standard deviations below the norm is known as a micropenis. This very unusual condition is generally detected in early childhood. Penis-enlargement self-treatments have no effect on this condition, although childhood and adolescent testosterone treatments may be administered and in adulthood surgery measures have shown some limited success.

Surgical techniques used for (enhancement phalloplasty) — penis lengthening and penis widening (girth enhancement) — have been in the urologic literature for many years. In study at St. Peter’s Andrology Centre and Institute of Urology in London, men who got penis-lengthening surgery, most patients weren’t satisfied with the results.

A related method involves injection of silicone, PMMA[3] and other materials into the penis and scrotum, to achieve girth enlargement. The results of the study into penile augmentation surgery mentioned above confirm that surgical techniques used to thicken the penis are far more effective than those designed to increase penile length. In the research sample of men studied, flaccid circumference following the above procedure had increased from an average of 3.1 inches to an average of 4.1 inches, whilst erect penile circumference increased from an average of 4.1 inches before surgery to 4.8 inches after surgery.,[citation needed] but is effectively irreversible and may have side effects including loss of sensation, inability to perform penetrative intercourse, scarring and deformation.

Injections of other substances, including collagen, mineral oil, and even KY Jelly may have similar effects, but also may cause extreme scarring and permanent disfigurement [citation needed]. These may include a bump, permanent or temporary, on the stem of the penis itself, which would actually be the collected collagen or silicone introduced in the erectile tissues. This forms an unsightly lump around the base of the penis where it settles down and may inhibit the flow of the blood itself. Other effects may be the slight decrease of the glans width as compared to the overall stem of the penis.

Approximately one-third to one-half of the penis is inside the body, and is internally attached to the undersurface of the pubic bone. Penis lengthening involves the release of the fundiform ligament and the suspensory ligament that attaches the two erectile bodies to the pubic bone. The suspensory ligament makes the penis arch under the pubic bone. Release of this ligament allows the penis to protrude on a straighter path, further outward to give more functional length. With the penis on stretch, the ligament is divided close to the pubic bone until all midline attachments have been freed. Once these ligaments have been cut, part of the penile shaft (usually held within the body) drops forward and extends out, enlarging the penis by 20-30 mm. After surgery, part of the postoperative treatment includes stretching of the penis to prevent the severed suspensory ligament from healing shorter than it was previously. The article Penile Suspensory Ligament Division for Penile Augmentation: Indications and Results discussed the subject. According to Nim Christopher, a urologist at St. Peter’s Andrology Center in London, among men who have had the surgery, “the dissatisfaction rate was in excess of 70 percent”.

A further method is to replace the two corpora cavernosa with inflatable penile implants. This is performed primarily as a therapeutic surgery for men suffering from complete impotence; an implanted pump in the groin or scrotum can be manipulated by hand to fill these cylinders from an implanted reservoir in order to achieve an erection. The replacement cylinders are normally sized to be direct replacements for the corpus cavernosa, but larger ones can be implanted.

One advantage to this surgery is that an erection can be created whenever desired, for as long as is desired and as firm as desired. The major negative to it is that this surgical procedure can never be reversed.

Self-treatment methods No scientific research supports the use of any nonsurgical method to enlarge the penis, and no reputable medical society endorses penis-enlargement surgery performed for many reasons.

Cosmetic Rather than attempt to change the actual size of the penis, one may make it appear bigger, by trimming the pubic hair or by losing weight, which may be of particular use if one is overweight.

Pills “Penis enlargement pills” or ointments are commonly offered over the Internet. Analyses performed by Flora Research of California and by the University of Maryland have uncovered harmful contaminants in a number of “penis enlargement” pills. Contaminants found included mold, yeast, dangerous E. coli bacteria, pesticides, and lead. Dr. Michael Donnenberg of the University of Maryland has described herbal pills marketed as having “heavy fecal contamination”, possibly from animals grazing near the plants harvested for herbal ingredients. There may however be a placebo effect i.e. a psychological effect of making the user think he has a larger penis, and increasing his confidence, when there is no actual change to his penis size Some people have also reported that such pills make them feel sexually aroused, and give them harder erections, but again, without any actual growth of the penis.

Penis pump A penis pump is a cylinder that is fitted over the penis, with a manual or motorized pump to create suction. As the apparatus creates a vacuum around the penis, blood is drawn into the penis, helping it to become engorged. As vacuum increases, the difference between the inner blood-pressure and the pump pressure increases as well; excessive pressure causes vascular damage rather than a harder penis.

A penis pump with a transparent cylinderPenis pumps, usually described in this context as vacuum pumps, have use in conventional treatment of impotence. The pump itself is essentially as described above, although often made to higher standards of quality with a much higher price, and arrangements for distribution by suppliers of medical equipment. One or more flexible compression rings, commonly called ** rings, are fitted on the open end of the cylinder, then an erection is created by pumping. Then the rings are pushed by hand onto the base of the erect penis before releasing the vacuum. This enables the erection to be held even in the presence of problems of the vascular or nervous system which would otherwise lead to immediate loss of erection. In the best circumstances erections can be maintained for a considerable time, but manufacturers’ literature recommends that, for safety, rings should be removed after no more than 30 minutes. Having rough sex can also result in the bursting of a blood vessel.

Penis pumps are also used for masturbation. In August 2006, Oklahoma district court judge Donald Thompson was sentenced to four years in prison for repeatedly having masturbated with a penis pump while presiding over court cases.[9]

Pumping must be done very carefully to avoid injury. Over-enthusiastic pumping can burst blood vessels and form blisters. In some cases the testicles can be unexpectedly pulled into the cylinder and cause severe pain and injury. It is also believed that the rim of the cylinder can cut into the skin and over time cause damage to the ligaments surrounding the penis. Impatiently pumping without reading explanatory material can produce too much suction (any pressure lower than 10 torr) and cause permanent injury. Attempts at using vacuum cleaner units for this purpose have resulted in severe injury as the machine produces far too much suction. If the base unit is used without a hose there is also the danger of coming into contact with the rapidly-rotating fan.

[edit] Jelqing and clamping Jelqing is a method intended to enlarge the penis by increasing the blood pressure in the penis, with the goal of permanently increasing the maximum erect size of the penis. This technique, also called “milking”, involves wrapping the thumb and index finger around the penis while semi-erect and repeatedly drawing them away from one’s body to force blood into the glans, thus encouraging more vascularity in the corpus cavernosa and associated tissues. Whether jelqing actually works or not is a subject of controversy.

Risks that exist from this exercise are; burst blood vessels, sometimes causing bleeding from the urethra (which can lead to infection and other complications if not taken care of), temporary erectile dysfunction and, in the very extreme cases, bursting of the penis itself[citation needed].

There are many products (tools, instructions, etc.) that one can buy; however, much of what they offer (instructions) is available on forums and free websites. Before beginning an enlargement regimen, one should contact someone experienced with the technique.

Jelqing is typically preceded by a warm-up with a hot compress on the genitals, and concluded the same way.

Clamping is a technique that uses a constricting device, such as a shoe string, cable clamp, or a tight ** ring. The clamp is firmly tied, clamped, or put, respectively, on the base of the erect penis while “edgeing” (extended masturbation) with a firmly erect penis.

[edit] Stretching and hanging Stretching consists of attaching a penis stretcher or “extender” device to the penis for set periods of time. The device exerts a constant traction on the penis, which, in theory, lengthens and widens the penis. The traction supposedly causes the cells in the penis to “split” and then reform and expand. Whether or not penis extenders actually work is subject to debate - much like all methods of penis enlargement.

Hanging is perhaps the oldest self-treatment method of penis enlargement, with evidence suggesting it was practiced by certain African tribes as long as 2000 years ago. Weight hanging consists of attaching a device (usually a rope or a strap) that grips the glans or just behind the glans and allows a weight to be suspended for specific amount of time.

The idea behind weight hanging is to stretch the tunica albuginea and other various tissues of the penis. The general effect is to elongate the penis, although widening can also occur. Weight hanging, however, can also carry serious risks, which include chronic pain, scarring, and impotence.

So, the Hawks lost….again, to the 1-8 Supersonics. I know this was without Smith and Law, but come on….the rook hit a 30 footer at the buzzer. This after the hawks missed not one, but two potential game winning shots (4th qtr, 1st OT). Oh and missed untimely free throws hurt too. This is why no one is going to believe in the Hawks. It is going to take some constant winning, not the surprise here and there. I really thought this was the year things turned around, but some things never change. I will continue to watch, continue to root, and continue to be let down. When does spring training start?????
