Herschel takes Spurrier’s bait
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Another round of hugs from Herschel to Knowshon had to wait. First, Mr. Walker, as in “He’s running over people!” and as in the most passionate former Georgia player you’ll ever meet, had to get something off his considerable chest.
It involved Walker’s version of Steve Spurrier sucker-punching everybody in the Bulldog Nation. “Did you hear about this?” Walker said over the phone, still smoldering over Spurrier’s critique of the entire Georgia team rushing onto the field en masse last month in Jacksonville. To the dismay of Spurrier and those into professionalism, coach Mark Richt ordered his Bulldogs to get an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty while celebrating their first touchdown during what became a victory over Spurrier’s old Florida team.
Anyway, Spurrier took a break from his current role as South Carolina coach to become as equally unprofessional. He said he would have sent one of his third-stringers into that Dog pile to create a fight. As a result, Spurrier said the Gators would have prospered in the long run since the SEC would have delivered a slew of suspensions to Georgia players.
“Well, you know, is that not insulting? That’s totally insulting for a coach of his stature to say something so stupid,” said Walker, getting angrier by the syllable. “So my question I say to him is, if he’s got that much guts, why don’t he step in a ring against me? You don’t say something that silly, because you’re going to get somebody hurt. Georgia was punished, because that’s a penalty. They didn’t go out to hurt anyone. [Spurrier] talks about hurting somebody. How much guts do you have? Step in a ring with me, and then we’ll see.”
A slightly calmer Walker was at the Florida game, but he left long before halftime to catch a flight to Southern California. He was off to de- velop a reality television show (“I can’t tell you about it yet”) with Hollywood types. Until then, the Wrightsville native will continue to run his profitable food-service business of more than a decade from two cities. There is Dallas, his hometown since his Cowboys days of the latter 1980s, and there is Savannah, where he located with the mind-set of hiring Georgia folks, with Bulldog connections or otherwise.
The man bleeds red and black, which is why he bemoans the fact that his eternal traveling often keeps him from between the hedges. “I really have a chance to attend more away games than home games,” said Walker, who witnessed Georgia’s victory at Alabama this season in addition to parts of that Florida game. Even so, he will be in Athens on Saturday for the Kentucky game, and he plans to be at Bobby Dodd Stadium the week after that. So Walker will have more live chances to study Moreno, the twirling running back sensation for the Bulldogs who is creating nearly as much of a buzz around Georgia as a freshman as You Know Who did.
“I tell you what. He runs extremely, extremely hard for a guy his size,” Walker said of the 5-foot-11, 207-pounder from Belford, N.J. “I knew a little bit about him when they redshirted him, and I told a lot of people, wait until they see this guy play, because he’ll get a chance to make it to that next level. I mean, don’t the guy for Dallas right now [Marion Barber] and Knowshon look like the same guy?”
Yep. Barber also is an accomplished spinner during runs.
If nothing else, Moreno is as efficient on the collegiate level as Garrison Hearst, Rodney Hampton, Tim Worley and all of those other Georgia backs after the post-Herschel era in the 1980s. “When I came to Georgia, USC had its stable of running backs, but Georgia has taken that over,” Walker said. “One thing you gotta be able to do at Georgia is catch the ball. Not only do they always have one great back who can do those types of things, they usually have two or three, like Moreno and Thomas Brown now.”
The Bulldogs also have Matthew Stafford, their sophomore quarterback who is improving and impressing. “Being in Dallas, where he’s from, I’ve seen him grow up, watching him play in high school, and he’ll get even better than he is now,” Walker said. “That’s why, even though people said I was crazy, I picked Georgia at the beginning of the year to go to the SEC championship game.”
Then again, Walker is a little biased, and he knows it. He laughed, adding, “If you’re a true Georgia guy like I am, it really don’t matter if they ever do something bad. It still looks good to you.”

Spurrier always has gave rude comments and digs for UGA and he always will. It does not matter what he does for the rest of his life and all his other accomplishments. He did not beat the dawgs as a player and it burns in him deep. It is a instilled hatred. I know somewhere Bill Stanfill is still laughing about Steve crying after he had been sacked. Herschel is an outstanding person. He is the greatest dawg of all but for all of those who have met him know he is just a great of a person as he was a football player. Go Dawgs

I remember UGA all american and all pro Bill Stanfill putting Spurrier on his scrawny little butt numerous times when UGA whipped Florida and Spurrier was “given” the Heisman because the news media was enamored with him. He was a third string bench warmer in the pros. After Stanfill helped Spurrier up for the fourth time after a sack he told Spurrier he should be wearing a dress because he was such a sissy when it came to contact. It was revealed the next day that Stanfill had the flu the day of the game and a temperature of 100. Giving Spurrier the Heisman was the equivalent of giving Jimmy Carter the Nobel Peace Prize. It was politically correct. Go Herschel - how bout them dawgs!

To rory reed.I do not know why I must waste my time with a reply to a lowely attack of a UGA player. But I am. Do not EVER make cowardly comments about people you cannot back up.Especially come over to a DAWG post from what ever ACC wannabe team or whatever team your afraid to defend. Matthew is a teenager that is trying his best to bring the Dawgs another title, and Herschel is an Elite player most players dream of being mentioned in the same story with. He has done more than any former player that I am aware of to help his former teams to this date. So do me a FAVOR and go back to your school’s blog,if they have one. Hopefully one day you can tell Herschel that to his face. No I didn’t think so. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!

Spurrier is just mad that he never thought of sending his whole team to celebrate after its 1st TD in a rivalry game. He did, however, think to send his 1st string offense back onto the field several times when ahead by 30 points to embarrass his opponent in games long AFTER the outcome was determined. That IS classless and Steve Spurrier IS the alltime primo Rico Cabeza of college football.

Living in the past is so safe and by the past I mean almost 30 years ago! UGA has become the Atlanta Braves of the SEC - occassionally winning the division but never able to win the big one; the Linda Lovelace of porn - choking on the BIG ONE; now your head coach resorts to sophmoric antics to get the fans involved. Hell, all you have to do to get the fans involved is win, dumbass!

Are you all blind? This is Terry’s second pathetic attempt to throw dirt on CMR.
“Spurrier took a break from his current role as South Carolina coach to become as equally unprofessional.”
This statement implies that CMR is in the same class as Spurrier! How low can you go Mr. Moore. You are hiding behind the sentiments of the greatest UGA player, at least in my lifetime, to smear one of the greatest UGA coaches. That is so wrong.

I posted something similar to this before last season on the Stafford/Tebow blog, but it may be more appropriate here about our aging hero calling this fight.
Munson: As we wait for this thing, Spurrier’s dancing around and yelling something at the refs. There’s the bell! Spurrier’s running around from corner to corner. He’s tapping Herschel on the knees every time he goes by. There he goes again, and again, and again! He’s coming around. WHAAACK!!!! OH MY GOD!!! Herscel just knocked him out of his shoes!!!! The visor goes flying!!! Stevie’s crawling around on all fours! WAIT A MINUTE!!!! Who’s the little guy running into the ring?!!! Uga’s loose!!! Uga’s loose!!! He jumps on Spurrier’s leg, NO!!! He’s on Spurrier’s back!!
He sticks it up there. IT’S A LONG ONE!! A LONG ONE!! A LONG ONE!! OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD!!! OH MY GOD!!!

You know what kills me is that a Souf Kakalaki fan would talk any smack after losing and losing and losing and losing and losing, and no I am not talking about the last 100 years or so, but the last 5. If Georgia had lost 5 in a row I’ll guarantee you we wouldn’t be worried about someone else’s board, we’d be discussing coaching. But I’m just glad I can talk about going to a BCS bowl for the third time in the last 5 years and not whether I get to go to another Liberty Bowl or possibly stay home. Man you know, honestly that program is sad, I mean really, they make hall of fame coaches quit. Sad Sad bunch, and I’m being serious too, they are and awful excuse for a proud SEC team, they’ve got NO, I mean NOOOOOOOOOO tradition. None. This guy is talking about thirty years ago and we’ve won 8 ball games for the 11th straight season, and won at least 9 for the last 7. They’ve never won 9 but one time, Man, SAD, SAD, SAD. Go Home Chicken. Don’t care what we do against you, we beat UF, AU, UT, and Tech, I’m good with playing in a BCS bowl every year, I love this team!!!!Get em Herschel, We love you too, Best DAWG ever………Souf Kakalaki is sad

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Minnesota Viking running back Herschel Walker was taken by ambulance to Irving (Tex.) Community Hospital early Sunday morning after his wife, Cindy, found him unconscious in the garage of their home. Walker told the newspaper yesterday that he was suffering no after-effects from carbon-monoxide poisoning he sustained while sitting in his car in the closed garage.
Walker said he had started his car in the closed garage and was preparing to leave his home when he paused to hear a favorite song on his cassette deck.

So what if Spurrier said he would send a third stringer to start a fight. Guess what……if it helps you win the game then go right ahead. I think that would be smart, especially if the opposing coach wants to send his whole team on the field to celebrate a TD. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand Urban Meyer. I think he is nothing but a whiney little female dog. (Got to be clean on here!) Of course I think Tebow is a closet queer also, and I am just waiting for the opposing teams to realize when you have him standing up and going nowhere, give a shot to the knee and he won’t do it again. Yeah call me dirty, but I have seen WAY TOO MANY cheap shots this season that were not called. and Florida is guilty of a lot of them. Anyway, back to why I am commenting. Walker should just let what Spurrier said not effect him. He didn’t mean it directly towards UGA, he meant it in a figurative sense. I am a diehard USC fan, but I have always liked Walker, especially during his Cowboys days. Walker needs to worry about the two devil coaches in the SEC now…..Miles and Meyer. They are the two most unprofessional and classless coaches I have seen in a long time.

Steve Spurrier:
Compiled a 122-27-1 record at Florida from 1990-2001, the most wins for a Gator coach in school history and a winning percentage (.817) that ranked among the top three in SEC history.
Coached Florida to two National Championship Game appearances (1995 and 1996), claiming the 1996 national title.
His 122 victories at Florida from 1990-2001 ranks as the best win total for a coach in his first 12 years at a school in major college history.
His Gator teams appeared in the weekly polls 202 of a possible 203 weeks, including each of his last 202 consecutive weeks. From 1990-2001, the Gators were ranked number one in the polls 29 times, appeared in the top five for 117 weeks and among the nation’s top 10 for 179 weeks.
The only coach in SEC history and one of only two coaches in major college history to lead a squad to six straight seasons of 10 or more wins (1993-1998).
The only coach in SEC history and one of only three coaches in major college history to lead a school to 12 consecutive seasons (1990-2001) of nine or more wins.
One of only five coaches in major college history to have his team ranked in the final Top 15 Poll in each of 12 consecutive seasons (1990-2001).
His UF squads finished in the Top 10 of the polls nine times and six times in the final top five, totals that both ranked second best in the nation over his 12 seasons (1990-2001). UF’s average poll ranking of 6.5 in the decade of the 1990s was second best in the nation.
He achieved 100 career victories at Florida in a faster time period (10th season, eighth game) than any major college coach at a school in the 20th century.
One of only five major college coaches in history and only the second in SEC history to lead a school to 100 wins during a decade (102-22-1 at UF from 1990-99).
One of only three coaches in major college history and the only one in SEC history to lead a school to an appearance in the weekly polls for a period of 200 consecutive weeks.
He and the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant are the only coaches in SEC history to win as many as four straight league championships. (1993-96).
His 95-22 record in SEC play ranks as the best winning percentage in conference history (.812) and his 73 league wins in the 1990s represents the most SEC wins during a decade in conference history.
The only coach in SEC history to win eight conference games in a season four straight years (1993-96).
The only coach in SEC history to lead a school to nine consecutive January bowl game appearances.
His six outright SEC titles (91,93, 94,95, `96, 2000) ranked as the second best total in SEC history, trailing only “Bear” Bryant’s 11.
Under his leadership, the Gator offense became the only unit in modern collegiate history (since the NCAA started keeping stats in 1937) to score at least 500 points (including bowl games) for four straight years (1993-96). Yale also achieved that distinction from 1886-89 and Michigan from 1901-04.
His 142 career wins ranked among the three highest victory totals in college football history for a head coach in his first 15 years at the helm.
Led Florida to seven appearances in the SEC Championship Game (1992-96, 1999-2000), with five victories (1993-1996, 2000).

Poor old Spurrier. He still can’t quite get over picking his a* up off the field all that day in 1966 when UGA beat him amd his OVERRATED Fl buddies. I was a freshman at UGA in 1966. That was 41 years ago, and, because of that game, the Old Ball Coach’s a* has been eating up his britches ever since. Ain’t that ashame?!

AMEN Steve!!!
I agree with you.
That classless Bush League show that UGAY put on in Jax was simple taunting, no sportsmanship, type of conduct.
Let me pose the question, would any of you would have thought this was such a great idea if it had happened against your team?
I think not!
This type of display of lack of respect does not belong on the football field!

Funny how Herschel wants to sink to Spurriers level by challenging him to a ring fight, shows just how much class (or lack there of)he really has. Kinda like the rest of the “ghetto fabulous” Georgia team that ran out on the field!!!!!

Hey KC - not to get into the middle of a fight with you and Dawg 59, but if you’re going to talk smack about his grammar, you should learn to spell the word correctly. Psst…it’s spelled with an “a” not an “e”. Go Dawgs.

Herschel, you are, and always will be, a “top dawg”, but don’t expect a coward like Spermier to get in the ring with a real dawg like you. He cried like a little girl when Stanfil planted him like a houseplant. The media at the time, felt sorry for Spermier and consoled his crybaby A$$ with a little Heisman trophy. Spermier almost didn’t accept when he found out Stanfil might be closer than 1000 miles from the award ceremony. He had only recently stopped trembling uncontrollably when he heard any dawg bark.(Spermier still has bad dawggy dreams and wakes up wet to this day, crying for his stuffed gator named “puffy” .)

Have any of you actually seen the press conference when Spurrier made these comments?? The comments were totally tounge-in-cheek. It was at the very end of his press conference and he had the reporters laughing and he was laughing himself. The tone and nature of the comments are lost in print. The reaction toward Spurrier is an over-reaction, much like Florida’s reaction toward Georgia’s celebration.

And Herschel was such a JOY TO COACH that he was traded by every pro team he was ever on. He was a selfish player then and a selfish has been now. What a waste.

Herschel is as classless as Richt and the whole ugag team. That was a bush league move in Jax and a bush league response by Herschel. You did “Call It Like It Is”. Herschel should stick to selling his frozen hot dogs and leave the commentary to the professionals.
BTW, I don’t even like Spurrier, but you cannot deny the results he has achieved as a player or a coach.

Who Cares, Get the he!! over it you whinny losers, you guys probably only played highschool ball if that?? It may have not been the best idea but it was not that big of a deal, football is intense on the college level and when you lose almost every year to Fla. you have got to try something new to win. Hey Spurrier, your time is over, shut up, you are not the same coach and will never be!!!!

Once again, Spurrier demonstrates how he holds the Bulldog nation in the palm of his hand and can make it react with just a comment. UGA allows Spurrier, who probably is the best college coach of all time, to pull its strings.

Ole No class Spurrier. Richt’s team celbration may have been bigger than planned, but what Spurrier is talking about is completely malicious. What an A@#. I think he’s just mad he didn’t think of it first. Too bad he can’t live up to expectations over there in c** land. I wonder if he’ll get frustrated and quit like he did in the NFL when he figures our he can’t win over there. I never disliked SC, but that’s starting to change because of that idiot head coach of their’s.

Spurrier is just jealous his team sucks and Georgia is better than South Carolina AGAIN! I have one comment to Spurrier: “South Carolina must not be that good, they lost to Vandy at home”. What a tool bag! Get him Herschel!

To Herschel,
Did the flood of UGA players rushing the field after the TD not have a good chance at promoting a fight itself?
THINK before you speak! There are many coaches that would have had the same type RE-action, RE meaning not taking the first action, as Spurrier stated in order to man up.
If that happened and Florida did that I am sure the Bulldog Nation would have wanted to send a third stringer into their pile.
The greatest running back in SEC history, well Bo Jackson might be, but a major bonehead.

I agree - Spurrier was just joking. How silly to write about it and make it appear to be more then it was. Something needs to be said about reporters making up stories for the sake of print.
At any rate, say what you want about Steve - he smashed Georgia this year and many, many years while at UF. I think the trend will continue.

* And tell me the last time USC chocked the big one, easy about 3 WEEKS AGO! Went from 6th to 106th! USC trys to be relevent by hiring retread NCAA Coaches in Holtz and Spurrier.*
When was the last Championship USC had a chance to play for? if you need help here are the biggest Chamionships in USC HISTORY!!!
Football Championships
1969 Atlantic Coast Conference
1995 Carquest Bowl
2001 Outback Bowl
*2002 Outback Bowl *
* So USC fans talk trash when your program is relevant. You may sneak in and steal a victory every know and then and thats fine, but YOU WILL NEVER BE SEC CHAMPS OVER UGA!!!*

You DO realize that Bobby Bowden did just that to Spurrier once no? Spurrier said, “get in a wrestling match” with one of them and get a fight started. He was not talking about trading blows. The atmosphere for violence was already there, started by Richt, witness the second flag on that ploy, which I think was personal taunting. That’s the point. One lousy frosh could have started a war with a shove. Spurrier was also talking about it as a coach far away from the setting, in a hypothetical. Walker’s commenrs, whom you described as increasingly angry on the other hand, as you quote him, is basically personally threatening Spurrier, a much older man. I know your column is meant to stir up the Bulldogs. I don’t think that is necessary. They’re pretty pumped up about the 3 wins in the last 18 years over Florida. How’d they do against Spurrier this year? Oh yeah put up only 12 points and lost. Maybe that’s why Walker is angry enough to want to beat up an old guy.

In a battle of the wits, it would be an unfair fight. Herschel would demonstrate his Georgia education (Did he actually attend graduate from High School?) and he would be unarmed against Spurrier. Georgia wins once every few years, has to resort to cheating to do so, and now they’re it. Most of you weren’t even alive the last time your bull puppies won a National Championship and Spurrier’s SC team whipped you this year. Get over it and quit barking.
Bet you are looking forward to seeing the University of Florida National Championship GEORGIA license plates in Atlantta and Athens.

There is alot of other fans on this blog calling UGA thugs. Clean around your own back door first before you bash UGA. Are better yet go to your own blog, and get a life. A bunch of grown people calling young men playing football from any team thugs or what ever, now that is real class. I love UGA, just like the other fans love their team, but talking about these young men, any of them on any team now that just classless. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t like Spurrier, but he’s no dummy. Neither was his predecessor, Lou Holtz. But I think Spurrier understands that USC just doesn’t have the recruiting base to compete consistently in the SEC. And their fan base doesn’t,if they’re honest, expect much more than Spurrier is able to deliver. If he can get to a medium bowl every 2-3 years, get an occasional victory over one of the SEC Big Boys like UGA this year or UF last year, and maintain something like a .500 record against Clemson, the USC fans will be happy and he can stay there for as long as he likes. If he wants more than that, he’d best move on.
