Tech beat Duke. So what.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Durham, N.C. — They didn’t lose to a team that has dropped 24 straight and 61 of its past 64 in the conference.
They didn’t blow out a team that had dropped its previous three games by a combined 85 points.
They were just … there.
If you want to know why Georgia Tech athletics director Dan Radakovich would struggle finalizing a decision on Chan Gailey’s future, it’s because of games like Saturday. The Yellow Jackets were alternately dreadful and passable. They turned over the ball twice in their first four possessions. They let a punt get blocked, and they dropped passes.
They won by the deceivingly high score of 41-24 only because of a touchdown with five minutes left. And mostly because the opponent was Duke, which exists only to challenge its own historic runs of futility.
The best thing Gailey has going for him is Tashard Choice, who is as gutsy as he is talented. Choice, returning from a one-game absence, ran on a bad hamstring but finished with 170 yards and two touchdowns. He aggravated the injury on the end of a 48-yard run late in the first quarter but returned in the second, thereby setting him apart from most mortals.
But even in victory, Gailey acknowledged this wasn’t a work of art: “We gave up too many dumb scores. We gave up a blocked punt, which we hadn’t done in a while. It’s a mental lapse. We gave up an interception. We gave up a fumble for a touchdown. Those are things that you can’t do on a regular basis and win games.”
Tech is a pedestrian 3-4 in the ACC going into next week’s conference finale against North Carolina. Then comes Georgia (which has owned Gailey). Then comes the annual At-Least-We’re-In-A-Bowl-Game Bowl.
Gailey has four years left on his contract. What he doesn’t have is a vote of confidence. He apparently isn’t going to get one.
This was Radakovich as he watched the final few minutes of Saturday’s game: “Chan is our head football coach. The season isn’t complete. We have a tough game next week, followed up by our rivalry game with Georgia. I know Chan and his staff are working hard.”
This was Radakovich when asked if the fact he hasn’t made a public guarantee of Gailey returning next season means there is a decision to make: “There could be. I don’t know yet.”
This was Radakovich when asked his thoughts on the Jackets’ season: “It’s been a season. There are positives and negatives.”
The Jackets won a game they were supposed to, but we’ve learned not to assume anything with this team. Consider: Prior to the Duke game, they had been a point-spread favorite in five other games this season (excluding 1-AA Samford). The opponents: Boston College, Virginia, Maryland, Army and Virginia Tech.
They beat Army.
They lost the other four.
Duke is a team to make a statement against. Tech and Gailey failed to do that.
This wasn’t 2003, when the Jackets helped the Blue Devils end a 30-game conference-losing streak. But neither was it last week, when Duke lost to Clemson by 37.
You know what it was for a while? In doubt.
Gailey isn’t feeling the love these days. He even was booed last week during a taped message to fans about the dangers of drinking and driving. It’s not easy to get booed during a PSA. It was like when local lunatics booed the president of the Humane Society during the Michael Vick/ESPN town hall meeting.
There are Gailey defenders, and there should be. He is a decent coach and a good man. But the significance of the oft-used feather in his hat — five seasons, five bowl games — is overstated. Teams play 11- or 12-game seasons. With an ACC schedule and usual soft nonconference schedules, a football team doesn’t need to be a wrecking ball to make it into the sea of bowl games.
We thought the tide might be rising. Tech had one of its best recruiting classes ever. Then came the lopsided win over Notre Dame (33-3). Then Samford (69-14).
But an ugly loss to Boston College followed. And here we are again.
They beat Duke. So what.

Gailey……..good guy, horrible coach. Time to rebuild………again. Let’s keep this recruiter G. Smith, but let everyone else walk, including Tenuta and his blitz every down defense. I dont see anything different than a 7-8 win season and a yearly loss to UGAG. Time for a change.

Ray is right. When something is not working, make a change. Do something to excite the team and the fans. We used to watch Friedgen try multiple formations, QB’s, plays in a game to draw a spark. It sure looks like Richt has listened to his players and fan base.

If Mr. Excitement Chandler was a good and decent man he would have resigned when DRad came to GT I think if some one would check they would find Chandler is sending a part of his salary to Braine but then again the other coaches in the ACC are paying GT to keep him

Gailey is, and has been, an average coach. And, who the hell said he is a good guy? From what I have seen, he is an arrogant, stubborn, and non-fan friendly A-hole. Boring, boring, boring and a detriment to filling the stadium with Jacket fans for home games. It is way past time for his tired arse to leave town. Bye, bye fat boy!

You know, I hear a lot of people saying they feel bad for Chan.
Why? Because he’s unpopular on campus? The guy is making over a million dollars a year. He’s loaded. Stop telling me you feel bad for him because he got booed. Give me a freakin’ break. When you get paid millions of dollars and you go out and lose, you deserve to be booed. I’m a student, I’m paying part of his salary, and if he doesn’t perform up to my expectations, then I say it’s time to part ways. Don’t I get a vote?
We can hire cheaper nice guys who can lose just as well as him. He can go home and sit on his millions…unless, of course, he manages his money like he coaches. How’s that mutual fund doing Chan? I bet it’s underperforming!

Over the last five years, the best quarterback options Chan could put on the field are Reggie Ball and Taylor Bennett. Is that the best we could recruit? Did Ball get any better over the years? No? Has Bennett gotten any better through this year? No? …. Gailey’s approach is very old school NFL - very conservative and cautious with no imagination. It’s good enough to barely get into bowls but not enough to thrive in a College atmosphere. …. Tech needs a top notch QB in an offensive system where he grows and is able to thrive. And, we need receivers who can actually get open and catch the ball consistently. Will Gailey ever be able deliver this?

You can get Gailey to leave on his own, if you take away his coaching position, and give him a job as assistant to Rad. Then he can sit there for four more years, while someone else gets his old job. Firstly, you get a new coach, secondly, you spread Gailey pay over 4 years, and thirdly, Gailey’s ego wouldn’t allow himself to be put through the embarrassment. In other words, he’ll settle for much less than 4 years pay. If anyone ever sees Dave Braine any where on Tech campus will you smack him (for legal purposes: that’s a kiss).

Chan Gailey? That was my first impression when I heard he was the new head coach. We hired the first unemployed head coach we could find.To add insult to injury, we gave him a guaranteed extended contract. Incompetence from the President on down. Are there any other alumns who expect better than mediocracy? I assure you professors I had did not. Gailey is just biding his time until his contract expires. Won/Loss does not concern him at all. He has his money, win or lose. The ultimate responsibility lies with Clough and Braine.

Okay, sold!! Gailey must go. I hate the negative, and I prefer 7-8 wins and toilet bowls over 2-3 wins and no bowl, but maybe GT can consistently compete for a national championship in a day where scholarships are limited and parity exists.
Let’s not be fooled by Boise State, Hawaii, and Kansas. I don’t care if you dig up Lombardi and Dodd, these schools can not and will not continue to have success over the long haul.
Granted, the inner city or rural superstar may be influenced by a particular coach or system, but the core HS stars still grow up a fan of one particular institution and generally tend to end up at said school.
I just can’t get Bill Lewis out of my mind. Coaching at the D1-A college level must be one the most difficult and stressful jobs in the world, but really, what the hell does Jeff Schultz or Vegas know about that!!

NC is gonna be hungry next week and Chandler Gailey will be fat, dumb and happy on the sidelines and trying to stay awake. I like the idea of making him Rad’s asst…But how about hiring a new head coach and making Gailey an asst under him??? (Team Laundry Engineer?)
Or let him recruit since everyone says that’s ONE thing he does well…But never put him in charge of QBs, RBs or ANY player development…Maybe he could be responsible for improving Fan Relations. LOL

Want an example of a coach that understands college football? Look up the road at UGA and Richt. Read his comments about getting the fans involved, about making something fun for the team, about making both the fans and team excited about something. When has Chan ever cared about the fans, or tried anything different to get the fans and the team excited? Never. Chan tolerates the fan base because he has to. He would be happier if the game was played in a studio with all fan noise and emotion piped in.
My worst fear is that Choice will have this team so fired up we will somehow beat UGA and Chan will be with us another season. We’ve pulled off the improbable upsets before.

I dont see what the big deal is…
We lost to UVA, Va Tech, and Boston College; 3 teams that are better than us, and Maryland on the road by two. If anything we should be 7-3 instead of 6-4. Gailey is a terrible coach, but if you look at how poor our recruiting is every year, and how many in-states the mutts get, than we should feel glad to go to a meaningless bowl every year.

How long before we face facts and stop scheduling UGA? It’s just a beat down waiting to happen every year, who enjoys that? UGA wouldn’t beat their head against a brick wall forever like we do. I don’t understand the appeal of UGA talking trash to GT. I mean, it’s like if I go talk trash to the little kid down the street. Do you think I can beat him in a physical game like football? Umm..yeah…almost every time…I’m bigger…stronger…faster…more skilled…it’s a no brainer that I’ll win almost every time against that smaller kid. The last thing that I would dream of doing is talking trash to him though. How is it a classy thing to do for UGA to talk trash to GT? UGA is clearly much better in football year in and year out. How about giving GT credit for being willing to take a beating every year from big brother?
Get some class, geezus cripes.

I believed that this year would be the year that Chan Gailey would finally ‘get it’. A new O.C. in Coach Bond, the upward swing in recruiting, veteran defense, and the purging of Reggie Ball from the quarterback position. It seemed to me as if the stars was aligning for us.
I was wrong. Very wrong.
Coach Gailey’s finger prints are all over the game plan and the calls on the field. He may not be making each call specifically but he is dictating the nature of the calls….i.e. the very cautious ‘play not to lose nature’.
Whats the difference? Where is Coach Bond’s influence?
And Taylor Bennett? His talent has always been questioned….my opinion from what I had seen in person but with very good coaching and the right offense well…’who knows’.
The loss of Jonathan Garner hurts here. Either its the lack of devolopment or talent is killing us. Garner was much more talented in my opinion but if this staff is as clueless as the Pat Nix staff it won’t matter. Ditto if Josh Nesbitt was in there. Nesbitt is a marvelous talent I saw in high school but he could be wasted if Coach Gailey is allowed to remain at Tech beyond ‘07.
Coach Gailey needs to go to give our team a fresh start. Among the staff I’d like to see Coordinators’ Bond and Tenuta and everyone that is key to our recruiting being giving a chance to stay. Coach Giff Smith is doing an outstanding job.
The head of our program is the source of our problems on the field…..Coach Gailey has certainly worn out his welcome and the sooner he is gone the better.

Do you guys really think firing Chan is the best thing? We got beat by better teams this year. We have no QB. Your offense is not imaginitive if the QB is as awful as Bennett. Maryland killed BC. UVA keeps winning. BC and Va Tech beat us pretty bad. But all of those are winnable game with a QB. We did not get housed for 30 or more against anyone. And check your stats but the great shining beacon you fans call O’Leary was 0-fer against Richt as a Seminole! And O’Leary’s teams would get tons of points scored against them. We only pay our coach $1 mil (as opposed to 2 and change up the road) So what do you expect? Tech does not have the support of an SEC team in football. Not nearly as many fans. Non-ols-out stadium in big games. Get over it. Firing Chan is not going to help us get better recruits. We with better recruiting still have 1 or 2 of the Southern top 100. We have no cake walk degrees that allow for the program to be 100% what it is about for the student atheletes. So quit thinking we can run things like a UGA or FLA program. WE just can’t. This team has not over-achieved. But you will not with a sorry QB. Ball was better than average with his determination, but both of these guys had not the skill of their peers at other schools. Lay off for the rest of Chan’s contract. I think he’ll suprise you. You can’t be all crazy with an offense when the QB cannot make small possession passes to move the chains. You are worrying about the wrong person. I’d love Nesbitt in there, but he is not ready. This is our team and I am tired of hearing the crap from our fan base. Who would want to come here. I am so tired of Sports Writers saying if a coach is not 8-10 wins eavery year they must go! F* the sports writers. I am so tired of these guys who have no life but to bash unprofessional atheletes and programs like that and they are our home town paper. I am sure some old fossil at the AJC told the the idiots to make the articles “creative”. But my home town paper has nothing good to say unless my teams kill everyone every week. I would not want to coach around here either. UGA had a 2 game skid earlier and you guys did the same thing. I am sure you all are eating up the adversity of the Falcons this year. This is the perfect pro market for these guys. Thrashers, Hawks, Falcons all suck so you guys can sleep better at night knowing you have cramed all this negative garbage down our throat day in and day out!

Is GT going to a bowl? UVA, VT, Boston College, Clemson, Wake Forest and Florida State have equal or better records than GT. Fact, GT fans do not travel as well as the other teams, including Wake Forest. I doubt a “toilet bowl” will want a team with a disgruntled fan base with a “lame duck” coach. I do not know if Choice or any of the other athletes(code for black players) is a senior or not.If he his, someone should advise him not to risk further injury by playing games that mean nothing. Stay on the injured list and save his body so that he can go get paid by the NFL. Be loyal to yourself and not the Tech alumni who care nothing for you except what you bring to the win column. As for academics, if he wants to become an engineer, then stay in school and play it out. I am an engineer, but the money is nothing close to what the NFL pays. Even if he gets to the NFL, he will be lucky to last five years without blowing out his knee again. Same is true for Moreno, Brown and Lumpkin over at JAWGA. Get the money, invest it(forget about the bling and women) and use your signing bous to return to school later. Take a lesson from Hershell. Get out before it is too late.

Hell, he even married a white girl for gosh sakes. This must have made some of the red necks out there turn over in their graves.LOL!!!!

Jeff, Your line about playing an ACC schedule and a weak non-conference schedule is insane. We play UGA and ND out of conference and it’s not our fault ND sucked. The schedule was made 12 years ago! As for the ACC schedule, we’ve played currently ranked BC, Clemson, UVA, and VT. When we play UGA, that’ll be 5 ranked teams. To put that in perspective, UGA has played UF and Tennessee. I assume AU and Bama are going to be unranked this week. So, tell me again who has played the tougher schedule.

Gailey’s not the one getting the recruits… it’s Giff Smith.
Gailey’s a JOKE …… he’s the boring office worker that goes through the motions day in & day out for 30 years; only getting promotions b/c he’s got seniority, not b/c he’s better or more deserving than others. Just like his quote leading-up to the Va Tech game that Jamaal Evans would start at RB over Dwyer b/c he has seniority.
And let it be said AGAIN ….. what in the hell is he thinking letting a WALK-ON return punts!?! Is he the only “return threat” to be found amonst all these atheletes??? Is he really better than let’s say …. Dwyer, Earls, Donnolly, Nesbit, Greg Smith, Thomas, James Johnson, A speedy DB, my dead grandmother, etc????
But hey, who am I to question a football genius like Chan Gailey!

I understand Mark Richt has called for a “red out” at the GA Tech game this year. All fans have been asked to come topless and blind the stadium with their exposed necks…

Beware of what you wish for. Gailey sucks, tis true, but he does win 7-9 games a year. There is a such thing as having a losing season for 6 years in a row. I still say we need to dumb down our schedule, go 10-2, and complain about not being picked to be in the BCS.

What a mean-spirited column. Tech did what it was supposed to do at Duke, win convincingly. Let’s look optimistically (a word Mr. Schultz might want to look up) at Tech’s season, so far: Beat Notre Dame on the road when people like Shultz favored the Irish; beat Clemson and Miami; beat Samford and Army convincingly, as they were supposed to do; came from behind and went ahead by 2 at Virginia, only to lose because of a fumbled punt return; came from behind to within 2 at Maryland, and would have won but for a hold penalty away from the ball; was beaten by Virginia Tech with Choice sidelined; was soundly beaten by a great Boston College quarterback. Except for that game, a full-strength Tech team hasn’t had a convincing loss. We have every reason to be optimistic about the Georgia game, but will Schultz ever admit it? Don’t hold your breath.

Jeff,
Yes, Tech beat a team it was supposed to beat.
And, they are still only two plays from an 8 and 2 season overall and 5 and 2 in the ACC.
Two plays? And you guys try your best to paint them negative.
North Carolina and Georgia better come ready to play.

When are you guys going to get it? Chandler and Jeff Schultz are like Donald Rumsfeld. These men are so arrogant and unaware of how the world really functions that they continue make the same mistakes over, over, and over again!!!

I don’t know why everyone is so down. By the time we play UGA they will be tired. They can not have this intensity every game. I’ll bet anyone $50 that we beat UGA….. Straight Up!
Just wait and see. They will be spent by the time we get to them and we will pounce.

I hear all 18,000 that attended the Duke-Tech game had a good time. The Duke folks didn’t care about the game, and the Tech folks got another meaningless W to put in their win column to go along with 1-9 ND, Stamford, Army, and a Miami team that just lost 48-0 to Virginia.
You guys really do have a crappy program. Have fun in Boise.

Well fans, we appreciate all you Tech supporters. Like I told you last week Chan is our man and I think after this big win this week over a vastly underrated Duke you will agree. Also we are going Bowling once again. The streak lives on. Tech football is alive and well. And before you start getting on Paul Hewitts case let me say he is also doing a great job. Even though we lost to UNC Greensboro or whoever, just wait till the ACC season starts. Thats when we will come on strong. I forsee a championship this year. So again, thanks for your overwhelming support of our program and its coaches. D/R

How is winning by 17 and holding the other team to under 150 yards of total offense not making a statement. Take the one 64 yard play away and Duke had less than 100 yards of total offense. I believe that IS a statement.

Fall Jacket still has a tooth under his pillow, and wonders why the cookies aren’t gone on Christmas Morning. Beating UGA truly is a fairy tale.
I love reading the brutal honesty that so many analitical Techies have. With Stafford and Moreno, and a very young line, perhaps Florida fans will sound like you in a few more years.

Chan Gailey is the worst coach in the history of college football. THE WORST. He will never be any better. He should never have been hired…and he should ALREADY have been fired. He should be FIRED today.

Four things:
1) The print version of this article used the word “mediocre” in the title. That was better. One day the basketball team is described by the AJC as mediocre, now the football team. Mediocre is defined as “Georgia Tech athletics.”
2) Another year, another “oh yeah, this is the year we beat UGA!” At practive on November 19, Coach Richt will say “Raise your hand if you’ve ever lost to Tech.” The room will remain silent.
3) There’s nothing better than reading the jealousy of Tech fans. That’s one thing that will never get old.
4) UGA needs UT to win out so they can get beat by LSU in the SECCG. That will send LSU to the BCS Championship Game and the 10-2, 5th to 8th ranked Georgia Bulldogs will be headed to the Sugar Bowl as LSU’s replacement. Whereas, you guys can have fun on the blue rug. Boise in December…now that’s an adventure!

Dude, you are an idiot. Tech beats Duke, so what? You should be saying that if we lost. But we won. And if we beat UGAy, them we will be 8-4 and probably in the Peach Bowl.
And UGAy scrubed by to beat a Vandy team who is struggling to be the doormat of SEC again and lost to a mediocre USC and Bama team. So what makes UGAy so Great and not Tech. Your an awful writter. Do I agree with you yeah, to an extend, but please just write about the game and do it rightly. Go praise UGAy on their blog. -An angered Alum you know…

You gnats tell Georgia fans to have class. It seems that you forget how the Tech fans man handled the Maryland band after a good ole fashion whoopin in your high school stadium a few years ago.
