Falcons’ McKay suddenly disappears
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
No doubt, Rich McKay has done some nice things for the Falcons. He acquired the potent likes of Michael Boley, Rod Coleman and John Abraham, for instance. He added effective leaders such as Lawyer Milloy and Joe Horn. It’s just that he also botched the team’s kicking situation before each of the past two seasons, formed a dysfunctional offensive line and assembled a flawed group of quarterbacks.
That’s for starters.
Given the Falcons’ ongoing plunge under McKay since they reached the NFC championship game four seasons ago with 20 of those 22 starters coming from McKay’s predecessor, we have questions. We’d like answers from McKay, especially since he is the Falcons’ president and general manager. Instead, we’ve seen the face of King Tut more in recent days than that of McKay, who is theoretically more accessible to the public than a 3,300-year-old mummy.
Theoretically.
Ever since McKay spoke openly and boldly in January about that water-bottle mess at Miami International Airport involving Michael Vick, McKay has become the incredibly vanishing man. Throw in No. 7’s dogfighting issues, the sniping throughout the locker room directed toward the college coach that he hired for the pro game, and a nasty start in the sorry NFC South, and only victories for the Falcons are becoming more invisible than McKay.
So what’s up with this? Can’t tell you, because the supposedly media-savvy NFL executive when he joined the Falcons from Tampa four seasons ago rarely has returned phone calls to reporters for months. When you do see McKay around the Falcons’ practice facility or at the Georgia Dome, don’t blink. He’ll disappear in a flash. If you didn’t know better, you’d get the impression he can’t stand the heat from the inferno around Flowery Branch. It’s an inferno that is torching the Falcons’ chances for decency in the short and long runs. It’s an inferno that he helped spark.
This makes no sense. We’re talking about the Falcons sliding and McKay hiding through it all. He remains so popular in west central Florida that you get the feeling that one of those bridges from Tampa to Pinellas County will bear his name someday. That’s because his father, John McKay, was the Buccaneers’ cherished first coach, and because Rich McKay did the impossible. Under his guidance, the Bucs went from sorry during the 10 years before he became general manager (.270 winning percentage, 10 straight seasons of double-digit losses) to significant during his nine years (nearly a .600 winning percentage, 41 Pro Bowl selections in a six-year stretch and the foundation for a Super Bowl winner).
“I mean, they still talk about Richie around here, and he’s well-liked, and they respect the guy highly as somebody who was a mainstay of their football team,” said Wayne Fontes, the former NFL head coach who lives in the Tampa area. When John McKay left his legendary stint at Southern Cal for the expansion Buccaneers, Fontes was one of McKay’s assistant coaches with the Trojans who came along.
Added Fontes, reflecting on the 48-year-old McKay, “Other than the first five or six years, I’ve known Richie all of his life. As a little kid, he was very competitive, and he was a win-at-all-cost type of young man, and he was really respected at his age by his peers.
And, of course, he grew up, and that’s when he became well-liked here around Tampa with his dad.
“The thing about Rich McKay is that he’s a winner. He’s been a winner all of his life, and remember: All good things take time, which means Atlanta will be fine. In Tampa, people liked him in that building process, because he was very easy to talk to.”
Not in Atlanta. Here’s another difference between the McKay of the Buccaneers and the McKay of the Falcons: No Tony Dungy, the brilliant coach that he hired for the Buccaneers who continues to do great things in Indianapolis. And, no Jerry Angelo or Tim Ruskell. They were McKay’s top assistants in Tampa. Angelo departed to build a Super Bowl team as a general manager in Chicago, and Ruskell departed to build a Super Bowl team as a general manager in Seattle.
That left McKay. Maybe he misses those guys. Wish we could ask him.

Great Column, Terrance. As a Falcons Fan living in Tampa for the past 7 years, I can attest to Fontes’ comments.
However, when you get “below the surface” with Folks in Tampa about “Johnnie”, they never thought he was that goodof a GM, either.

Thanks Terrance,
McKay talked so much s** at the press conference with regards to Mike Vick. How the Falcons had sent out to him a demand letter for the money…
Where is his a* at now, because I want my money from him/his organization the “Falcons”. I bought my tickets to see Vick.
He is no better than Vick and I’m glad you all have realized it and now looking to holding his a* accountable for the silence, or shall I say we’ll see what response he gives.
Maybe he’ll disappear completely & let someone else have his position, and announce his resignation. He nor Blank has said as many as 3 words to the fans in months and the Falcons loosing their a* off.
They deserve what they get, a bunch of sorry a* outfits!!!!!!!! With no professionalism or CLASS!!!!!!!!
Take that, and the Vick bashers can fill up the stands. LOL!!!!!!!

I dont know whether it was Blank or McKay or both ~ i do know that Blank was pushing him around in a wheel chair but, this team hooked their wagon to ONE HORSE by the name of VICK. Dont think for a minute that eery fan and more importantly every PLAYER knew that. Petrino was hired for one purpose ~ get along with and adapt his scheme to Vicks skills. All you have to do is go back and read the AJC articles from early in the year.
McKay came post Vick and drank the “kool aid”. This team is not unlike some others ~ Raiders, Arizona, Baltimore etc. that have no real identity. All I know right now is that the Vikings look like geniuses for drafting “that running back”. He will make everyone forget about Reggie Bush!

I can’t blame McKay from avoiding you Terance. You are a known Falcon Hater, I wouldn’t give you an interview either. You and Schultz have already tried your best to divide the Petrino Club house, too bad it didn’t work as you had hoped.

Maybe McKay is no longer needed. After all, wasn’t Petrino given significant control over personnel decisions? If so, McKay’s expendable.
I say get rid of him. The absence of Vick shows just how ineffective McKay has been.

Good column T-Mo. When sketching out McKay’s disastrous moves, don’t leave out the one where he hired Jim Mora Jr. What a turd that guy was.
And as for solid management, I blame both Blank and McKay for looking the other way on MV7’s issues for a long time. Ray Buchanan knew all about MV7’s dogfighting - and let the word out accidentally to ESPN’s John Clayton before retracting his statement - and he didn’t even play with Vick. And we’re supposed to believe Blank and McKay didn’t know??

So Mr. Food, a ‘Michael Vick fan’ doesn’t have the right to point out McKay’s obvious failure at building a winning franchise or simply showing his face & owing his part in this mess? Well, I guess we could lose for centuries & all that’s good for you is we don’t have a ‘conVICKted felon’ at quarterback. Really original, by the way. Why don’t you & Greg go buy season tickets if you’re such ‘McKay fans’…LOL

The article aside. I think Mr. Bland and Rich made a huge mistake by not standing by Mike. I think the better approach would have been to support him as a person and player and allow the league and courts dispatch his punishments. Mike turned the Falcons around. He earned millions of dollars for Mr. Blank. It sad that we build Mike up so high and tear him down after one mistake. Why does Britnay Spears get more love than Mike? I think if the Falcons brass would have stuck by Mike much like Baltimore did with Ray and Jamall Lewis, the fans would still be there supporting the Falcons.

He needs to disappear, and so do Bobby P. He is trying to get a young team. you must have thr right mixture of veterans and young players. This is not college. Bobby P is trying to get a team of 19 and 20 year olds, someone he feels he can control, because he obviously cannot coach or lead grown men. That’s why Richie and Artie have backed off. They are leaving Bobby out there all by himself and he is to dumb to see it. Sooooo sad!

I think this is a very short sighted column from a reporter who has been negative towards Atlanta teams since I’ve been reading the AJC, dating back to the late ’80s when I moved to Atlanta. The Michael Vick incident has set the franchise back significantly and the Jim Mora Jr. hire was a mistake. But Rick McKay is a respected NFL executive and deserves a chance to right the ship with Bobby Petrino. Also, Petrino stated when he joined the Falcons that Rick McKay was one of the big reasons he came here. Give it some time, people. I’ve been a long suffering Falcons fan since 1989, and this is the worst it’s ever been, but let’s not wail on one of the guys that can help fix the franchise.

Scribe, some things to consider. One - Terance Moore probably never reads these posts. Two - You’ve been reading his articles for 20 years so that make you a loyal reader of his. Three - If a journalists writes all positive it is considered sucking up. If they write negative it is consider being a hater. A no win situation. Four - You’ve got an addiction called, being a Falcon fan. Five - There is no cure.

Did Terence just point to the signing of Joe Horn as one of McKay’s GOOD personnel decisions? 18 receptions, no touchdowns, and well under 10 yards-per-catch? Yikes…
Even if we could credit Joe with 100% of Roddy White’s improvement, it still doesn’t make the signing of Horn a good one. All it means is that Terence must have written an article back in the spring praising the move.

Its McKay? All this time I was being told that Vick was the problem. I thought you said a pocket passer that had a completion rate over 60% was the solution to the problems with the Falcons. The Falcons are sliding? Naw not possible, Vick is gone so we are a better team now RIGHT? Im not one to say I hate to say I told you so, I love doing it. When Vick is back in the league, with another team, and comes back to the Dome and beats the breaks off the falcons, I will be right here saying I TOLD YOU SO. Dont think Vick will play again? Please!! This is a business, you have convicted DRUG TRAFFICKERS and other FELONS playing in the league right now! Drug trafficking is WAY MORE HEINOUS than dogfighting. You think an owner of a team in desperate need of a QB is going to let Vick sit idle? You people need to wake up. They will pay Blank whatever he thinks is owed him, and get Vick on their roster. Money is AMORAL, owners are AMORAL, Vick will be back.

My feelings about McKay is all in my name. The days of accepting responsibility for the great Tampa defenses built by Tony Dungy, Jerry Angelo and Tim Ruskell are long gone. Arthur, to this day all you’ve done is talk a good game. I don’t know what your love affair with McKay is, but the guy does not know how to truly build and NFL team. He’s not even a good GM at handling salary cap…look at our current situation. McKay Must Go!!!

I busting a gut with laughter here. To say the Falcons should have covered Vick’s back hey that’s all they have done..The little “blister” incident, the airport coke bottle, the shooting a bird at the fans and by the way that is what really turned the Atlanta fans away from him, him getting on tv in front of our faces saying I’m Michael Vick everyone loves me and the big one, killing of dogs and breaking the law of dog fighting…come on bro how much more are we as a society going to continue to let these players get away with crap when these thugs have million dollar contracts and endorsements and still they continue to break the law and act a fool. I bet half of you are also supporters of TI and feel he is being misjudged…and the sad thing is you idiots are probally raising children and if they are being taught that these guys are role models then they likely will be in our jail system eventually.

Mckay need to be looking for a new Coach, when Tuberville leave Auburn, you know who is GONE!!!! I know ol Bobby P cannot wait to leave this joint… I know he is on the phone telling ol Tubby T got to Texas A&M so he can get his post. Maybe then McKay can hire a established NFL Coach like Bill Cowher to turn this ship around and bring some excitement. This will save him and Artie B.

Sam Wyche, Jerry Angelo, Tim Ruskell = John Lynch, Hardy Nickerson, Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks.
McKay couldn’t get the Bucs over the top. After Dungy was fired for years of mediocre Offense, McKay tried to hire Marvin Lewis after Parcells backed out because the Cap was so screwed up. The owners had to do his job and hired Jon Gruden for a very costly price to get the team over the top before the window of opportunity slammed shut. Should have been telling when he was let go during the season by the owners. He may be a good lawyer, but as a GM, phhhhttt. Lets hope Jerry Jones hires him next.

jc, here’s a clue…there are plenty of millionare ‘thugs’ in this country & they’re not all ball players…& they don’t all look like Vick or TI. I’m assuming you were pretty upset when Bobby Cox, the millionare ‘thug,’ beat up his wife. You’re right, society has got to buckle down on this stuff. How about we start with the ‘thugs’ at the top that are handing out the conctracts? Your TI statement/assumption makes your ignorance more obvious than you’ll ever comprehend. What’s really sad is that the same ‘society’ you’re talking about, includes bigots that are so intimidated by unrest that they assume supporters of certain Black folks support every other Black person…regardless of the issue. That, jc is what’s sad. Btw, what’s was your take on McKay again? LOL

Here we go again. Terrence, did you seriously believe this team could be turned around in a season or two? Even with an escape artist at QB, we were playing well above our heads to even make it to the playoffs, and our best players were growing older every game and are now on the backside of the hill and rolling down in a hurry.
I think McKay has done a poor job in some respects. Not bringing Morton back despite his accuracy, and how important a sure kicking game from 40 yards and closer is, was a HUGE mistake. Not going after a couple of the best ‘good side of the hill’ offensive lineman is the real issue.
The reason I have a hard time blaming McKay is that he was not able to make the decisions he WANTED to make. He did not want a ridiculously overpaid QB strapping the cash flow and handicapping the team against the really good defenses you see in the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Falcons are a business, and despite what anyone else says about him, we all know Michael Vick sold tickets. Tickets or not, Vick’s contract is killing this team cap wise, and will continue to do so unless the Falcons can recover some of that money.
We still have quite a few overpaid players. We still have one of the most injury prone teams I have ever seen, and I have been a Falcons fan for over 30 years.
We need a few more solid drafts, and we need to not get hasty and reach for a QB when it is obvious we need to get some lineman to protect them first. Harrington has better credentials than any of this years QB crop in the draft, and you see how a bad line has killed his career. If McKay focuses on the boys in the trenches first, and ignores the ‘knee-jerk’ reaction to draft a QB, it will benefit this team now, and for more than a decade into the future.
I give him a few more years before I consider McKay a flop. In the era of free agency, with uncertain coaching tenures, it is hard for a team like Atlanta to lure in the big names in the prime of their career. That means rebuilding will be a slow process, and when the biggest piece of your rebuilding plan self destructs right before your eyes, it means you have to scramble to repair that loss. It will not be easy, and I can gaurantee you that Rich McKay is a much better GM than Terrence Moore is or will ever be, just judging by the ridiculous crap TM spews constantly.

Ok, I agree with what TM mostly says, but McKay does not get paid to return your or any other print media’s phone calls. For ducking you, well we have to take your word for that. What goes on behind the Falcons doors only McKay knows. What was he expected to do drop a blow up the organization in August after the Vick fiasco? Assemble a “better” team in August? Couldn’t be done. We all knew going into this year this was going to happen, so why act surprised now? The key is this upcoming offseason and the moves they make concerning the OL,QB,RB,DL,LB…ok pretty much the hole damn team.
McKay does not get a great grade thus far with having to much importance placed on one player, but who would have thought that would have played out the way it did. So it is what it is and McKay and the rest of the Falcons brass has to focus on this years draft and Free Agents.

**Great article Terrence. The phrase “Hammer hits nail dead center” comes to mind here as I agree with every point you make.
It’s about time McKay got some heat around here. He seems to be very quick to take credit and only accessible when things are going well. And like you said, when things are down, he seems to become Teflon and completely disappear. I can’t even remember the last time I saw/heard him do an interview on TV or radio outside of the Vick fiasco?
You know Arthur Blank has to look back and ask himself where the Falcons would be if he stuck with Dan Reeves and his staff that assembled the team that Jim Mora and Rich McKay got credit for in the NFC Championship game. Making changes for the sake of making changes may have worked at Home Depot when he was selling hammers and two-by-fours, but it looks like he is realizing that this same approach may not work as well in the NFL?
Keep up the good work and maybe McKay will come out of hiding someday.**

It’s interesting that so many people are so against Petrino. I mean, there isn’t much even a Parcell’s type of coach could have done with a shotty OL and a non-existent starting quarterback. Perhaps Petrino isn’t the problem. Perhaps it’s the fact there the Falcons decided years ago that instead of getting themselves an OL, they would solve the problem with a running quarterback. And now, with that QB gone, the OL problems are more than obvious, if you watch the games.
Oh, wait, they don’t put them on TV anymore.

I don’t think you can blame the mess at QB on McKay. Harrington and Redman wasn’t supposed to do anything more than tote a clip board. Your hero Vick is to blame for that mess. Harrington was a great “backup” selection since we weren’t going to be able to keep Schaub.
