Hawks impress but need more

Terence Moore

You could tell in so many ways Friday night before an absolutely delirious gathering at Philips Arena that these aren’t the same old Hawks.

First, they won.

Let that sink in, and it gets better: They accomplished such a rare feat in recent years on opening night with a 101-94 victory over a standout Dallas Mavericks bunch. Not only that, much of the stuffed house spent the game’s stretch drive delivering a loud and spontaneous collection of dancing, shouting and cheering.

Actually, when it came to the Hawks, all of that was secondary to this: They looked interesting. They looked enthused. They looked improved.

They looked good.

The only thing more impressive than the Hawks’ energy throughout the evening was their refusal to collapse after several late runs from their typically explosive visitors who regularly travel deep into the NBA playoffs. “Our team is growing up,” beamed Hawks coach Mike Woodson, telling the truth in the aftermath. Rookies Acie Law and Al Horford often played as splendid complements to Joe Johnson and Josh Smith, the Hawks’ youthful veterans.

Woodson added that this was a team victory, with nice efforts from Marvin Williams and definitely Tyronn Lue, who contributed so many clutch shots near the end that the crowd wildly chanted “Lue, Lue, Lue” during one of his trips to the foul line.

That’s all splendid, but the Hawks can’t get around this: They could have gotten Chris Paul before he became a certified star for the New Orleans Hornets, but they didn’t. They could have gotten Deron Williams before he became a rising star for the Utah Jazz, but they didn’t. They could have gotten Mike Conley Jr. before he became a rising and certified star in waiting for the Memphis Grizzlies, but they didn’t.

Instead, with the Hawks preparing earlier in the night to spend a dandy time against the Mavericks and threatening to become relevant for the first time in years, their starting point guard was Anthony Johnson, not exactly a clone of Paul, Williams or Conley.

Johnson is what he is, and that is a serviceable backup in his 11th NBA season after stops in Sacramento, Orlando, Cleveland, New Jersey, Indiana and multiple ones in Atlanta. In fact, how many times has Johnson been the starting point guard on opening night for one of your teams? He paused, while thinking. “This is my first time. Yeah,” Johnson said, before taking the court against the Mavericks in search of trying to become the spark that turns the Hawks into an up-tempo inferno featuring all of that youth and athleticism.

Well, at least that was Johnson’s designated mission in the short run. We’re talking about the very short run. As for the long run, it came less than four minutes into the game. The long run even has a name for the Hawks, and it is Acie Law IV, the accomplished shooting guard from Texas A&M that the point-guard challenged Hawks drafted anyway this summer. He entered this one when Johnson misfired after hoisting an off-balance shot from the lane and traveled soon afterward.

In came Law, who instantly impressed.

That is until he instantly accumulated two fouls in three minutes for an early exit until the second quarter. Before that, he fed Marvin Williams with a nice assist in the lane, drove fearlessly to the basket into Dirk Nowitzki territory to draw a foul and barked commands like a veteran. They were wonderful signs of things to come for Law and the Hawks.

It’s all encouraging. And remember: Hawks officials are promising a renaissance this season with new uniforms and a new attitude. The thing is, unless Law or somebody else is for real at the point, the Hawks will have an old problem - no adequate and consistent guy at the point, which wouldn’t be good. Not when the NBA has evolved from a league of the dominant center to that of the prominent point guard.

If you don’t have a Steve Nash or a Tony Parker or a Jason Kidd or a Chauncey Billups or a (ahem) a Paul, Williams or Conley, you better have an overwhelming force such as a LeBron James or a Kobe Bryant to compensate.

Joe Johnson is the Hawks’ LeBron and Kobe in spurts. That means he needs help, so this was a start. A spectacular start.

Since when was Acie Law the shooting guard for Texas A&M? He was the point guard! Know the difference?

How can you possibly place Conley in the same category with the league’s elite PGs when he is the 3rd string PG on a team that lost more games last year than the Hawks? Damn, why can’t we enjoy just one night of winning ball in a city full of losers? What’s wrong, you’re too jaded to enjoy 3 hours of hope?

Hate to say it but Terence you are an idiot!!!!!!!! Law played the Point at Texas A&M

Go find out the name of the new WNBA team. At least you will have something new and accurate to say.

Same old Chris Paul rhetoric leave it alone it is a new day.

Honestly, does everyone have to bring up the paul/williams passing? This team was amazing to watch tonight, and I hope we get this much effort for 81 more games.

Anyone who thinks that you need an elite PG to win the NBA finals should STFU. Seriously. The last NBA team that won a title with an elite PG was the Bad Boy Pistons back in the 1970’s.

Parker, Wade - combo guards. Anyone who classifies a guy who averages 18 points and 4.5 assists a game as a true point needs to have their head examined. The Hawks have a combo guard in JJ. In each of the past 3 seasons, he averaged more APG than Parker, and he didn’t have nearly as many good players to pass to. Parker is a damned good combo guard, but he’s no PG.

And you’re declaring Conley a star before the boy even suited up for a game? Please.

So please, Terence, let Sekou handle the basketball, and go learn to fish. Just stop writing, Terrence. Please. Just stop. You’re embarrassing yourself.

What I don’t understand is why this guy is still writing for the AJC. Every time I read something of his, the response from the bloggers is always negative. I mean I realize the AJC is a second rate newspaper, but this guy just doesn’t cut it. I guess I’m just looking for some loyalty from the hometown writers…something that is obviously long gone in this town…

Jesus, Moore. You get worse and worse with each read. I don’t know when the AJC is going to get some sense and can the clowns that write for that paper, the biggest of which is you.

The longer you talk about Conley, the dumber you are going to look. He would not have started this game either. He is not even PLAYING for the team that did take him (where we got a starter in Al Horford in that draft spot).

Please Terrence. If you are going to keep posting the same old stupid sophomoric material, then please just spare us.

Your ignorance is surpassed only by your ego.

Went to the game tonite and it was a great win! We kept a great team down when we needed to and hit the clutch baskets in the 4th. JJ was spectacular. Josh was great and Horford is THE MAN. His 1st 3 NBA baskets were emphatic dunks that got big roars from the crowd. Too bad he and Acie got into early foul trouble. But we will have plenty more games to see what they can do. T. Lue looked like a solid backup PG and was great in the last qtr. I think Acie will be the PG that Terrance is yearning for. But I can’t belive he can say ANYTHING negative after a night like that. For God’s sakes, we just beat the team with the best record in the NBA last year and we did it with 2 of our best players on the bench most of the game (Al & Acie).

Only things I saw were that we turned the ball over a bit too much on the fast breaks. If we want to be a running team, we have to take better care of the ball with those fast break passes. Also Chills was off all night. He missed a few dunks, but this team is so deep now, it didn’t matter. Marvin stepped up and so did Josh. I hope this gets people in Atlanta to take notice of this vastly improved team. We need a team to cheer for in Atlanta people! GO HAWKS!!!!!

I didn’t watch the game tonight and haven’t really paid any attention to the Hawks in years. As a journalist by trade, even at your newspaper at one point, I’d have to agree with some of the responses here. Terence, you are a little too negative when teams actually have some degree of success and columns like yours are just indicative of the attitude by journalists and editors that drove me from the muck and rake game that they call “journalism.” I understand that your column and Bradley’s supposedly should give balanced assessments of the Hawks, or at least that what they appear to attempt to do. But let the Hawks give us some kind of hope. The Falcons haven’t so far and the Braves didn’t until that spurt after Texeira and then at the end when it was too late to rescue themselves. The Hawks can do it with a good start. But I think most people, from the most avid fans to the biggest skeptics, also realize that if they are going to have a good season, your column will have little bearing on that as Hawks must play actual games with real teams and not with words in a newspaper.

Terance, I honestly don’t understand.

Does the staff of the sports department at the AJC have meetings and declare that one of you is the “always be negative guy”? I almost commented on your anti March Richt blog after the Florida game, but saw that well over 400 people at the time had done it already and there was no sense piling on.

Tonight, I saw a clip about the Hawks big win on the 11 oclock news and went to the ajc website expecting some positive critique for a start that was so positive. Instead, I see yet another of the Terrance trash parade.

Look, it’s easy for people to take the low road and bash you and call you names. I don’t see the point in that. I’m just trying to figure it out. You’re a writer in Georgia, yet it seems very… very clear that you have a jaded, negative spin on everything and everybody. I’m sure you could site some positive articles, but for the most part, you have got to realize that - while calling out players and teams sometimes is a job you must do, at least to keep people accountable - it does not have to be your calling card.

I hope that being on ESPN town hall meetings and the Jim Rome show hasn’t warped your thought process to the point that you believe that cynical to the point of absurdity truly plays in Atlanta. It plays in New York of course, and Boston, Philly and perhaps a few other northern cities, but I’d ask you to remember where you are, and try to understand that your constituancy is not behind you right now. It’s not that we all want to sip on the glass of hype juice, but if a local team has done something extremely rewarding and positive for the vast majority of your reader base - what is the point of constantly degrading these accomplishments (Georgia beats Florida, Hawks start the season with a great win).

Dirk Nowitzki, Jerry Stackhouse and Avery Johnson all said amazing things about the Hawks tonight. What is your agenda for finding a flaw that everyone already was aware of, in such a time for celebration and hope.

I hope you reevaluate your attitude Terrance. I know part of journalism is to make blood boil and cause a stir sometimes… but consider doing it in moderation with a bit more tact perhaps?

Right on with this. Let’s see how the rooks answer to scouting reports later in the season.

I have not watched a Hawks, in full, since Smitty and Rice when at it.

This is a special win, and I (urggg) hope we can get 46.

Good win Hawks! Way to start a season. Joe Johnson’s slow preseason proved nothing. He is still lethal…HORFORD was a BEAST and I liked what I saw rebounding and dunking over opponents. Acie Law penetrated and was agressive. Wish he would have shot the ball so we can see his jumper, but he seemed hesistant. Josh Smith was solid but inconsistent. I don’t like it when he takes long jumpers out of rhythm. and finally TYRONE LUE PROVED why I think he is one of the best back up point guards in the league. The man is clutch, a veteran, and the truth. Terrence you have defined yourself by being overly critical but hey it is what it is sir. I’m glad he didn’t get Mike Conley Jr. We need size and shooting, not flash and lack of skills. We got both in Acie Law IV

Terrance…

Just stop.

You’ve berated the city, the team structure, the draft picks, the ownership, the fans, etc…

Maybe we all should critique your idiocy in the same fashion. Maybe we should go over and reiterate every single time you’ve been DEAD WRONG, but I’d be here until the start of baseball season.

The fact that you have a job is yet another example of why the AJC is no longer considered among the nations’ elite publications.

You come across like a crotchety old man whom never was picked for the kickball team during grade school. Frankly, I avoid your columns at all costs, but I’m a true Hawks’ fan and will read whatever is being written about them.

I feel like I should send you an invoice for taking up 4 minutes of my life that I can never get back.

As usual, Terrence gets it wrong. The guy just can’t help but bash the Hawks. They can’t go back and get Chris Paul or Derron Williams. Turn the page man! They have their PG of the future on the roster in Acie Law. He keeps wanting to compare him to Mike Conley, well guess what? Mike Conley is third string with the Grizzlies. He hasn’t seen a sniff of game time and he can’t drop the ball in the ocean. Acie Law is recovering from injury and will be playing well and often as he rounds into shape. In the meantime Mike Conley will be sitting the bench trying to displace Kyle Lowery as backup PG. Turn the page Terrance, turn the page.

Terence,

I gotta agree with Devon. You start this column out saying the Hawks are good, then you use that to feed your own version of how the story should read. You basically just equated Mike Conley, who has played less than three NBA games, to All-Star point guards. You have no idea whatsoever if that will be the case. Conley was in no way, shape or form the can’t-miss thing coming from college that Williams and Paul were. More than that, you just have to let that go man. Seriously. Stop it.

Criticize the Hawks when it’s obvious they have point problems, not when they beat last year’s best in the NBA.

I don’t always agree with you, but I’m rarely pushed to post on these comment boards. But this is just way over the top and needs to be reeled in. I’m just an aspiring journalist, and you are lightyears ahead of me in terms of experience and knowledge, but man oh man, I know when to let something go. You just gotta give up the fight, at least for now.

I am a journalism student as well and I agree with Zach. Maybe I need to do my research, but my eyes have never seen you write an objective story. You sir, are an imbecile. Did you even watch the game? TYRONN LUE IS THE HAWKS POINT GUARD. What in the world possessed the Hawks to re-sign Anthony Johnson for the millionth time again, I will never understand. He is absolutely worthless. Why did he start this game? Thankfully, he was only in the game for 8 minutes. He would not make the roster for Georgia Tech, much less any other NBA team. But, for some mysterious reason Woodson thinks he should be starting, with Lue coming off the bench.

Anyhow, Tyronn Lue is the point guard, for now, as long as he can stay healthy. Anyone who can’t see how much better the team is when he is in the game, just doesn’t get basketball. I know he is a streaky shooter, but we don’t need him to make 3 pointers every night. We have other guys who can do that. He knows how to run the team. He makes everyone around him better. That’s what a point guard does. If Lue get’s hurt we have Acie Law to fill in. I still don’t understand why people still insist in this nonsense about Stoudamire not being a point guard. I keep hearing and reading this horsesh## about “he shoots too much”. Oscar Robertson, Isaiah Thomas, Magic Johnson, Joe Dumars, John Stockton, Bob Cousy, Mark Price, those guys took a lot of shots. But, they made a lot of shots. That’s what counts. Who said a point guard can’t score points? Whoever made that up knows nothing about basketball. It doesn’t matter who shoots it, as long as it goes in. Stoudamire is the Hawks best outside shooter on a poor perimeter shooting team. Yet, he sits on the bench every game. As far as that goes, Joe Johnson is a fine point guard when they need him. I wouldn’t want him doing it all the time, but there is nothing wrong with JJ playing the point, sometimes.

HAHA. That was one of your worst, Terrence.

I know you dont read these comments (because you get blasted so much), but man, c’mon now.

No more about Paul and Williams. It’s over. It’s done. There is no changing it. Except it. Yes, I too would like Chris Paul. But damn man! How many years can we fret over it?

If you had watched tonight’s game, you would’ve seen a very good pg in Acie Law. There was NOTHING shooting guard about his game. He got to the rim at will by using an exceptional ability to change speeds.

And you are talking about Conley?? Please, let’s see Conley do SOMETHING in the pros before we crown him an elite pg!

Again, had you watched the game, you wouldve seen that Horford was really the only choice! The dude is a beast in the post. C’mon now Terrence, youve been following sports for years… you couldnt see all the things that Horford was doing down there??? He was a stud!

How long do we have to wait unitl Sekou Smith takes your job??

I remember the recent 13-69 season. It was horrible. But no more.

Acie and Horford are the real deal.

40 wins easily this year.

If we are going to trade away Childress or Smoove at the end of the season(I hope we don’t)…FOR THE LOVE OF GOD make sure in return you get a player of equal or better ability!

Don’t dismantle what is going to become a winner in the near future.

Here we have a young Hawks team with stellar potential, who have committed to hard work and making the playoffs-and all Mr. Moore can do is continue whining about the same stuff I read months ago! Is he too feeble-minded to write interesting analysis of how the Hawks stuck to their guns and fought off the charge of one of the NBA’s elite teams? The Hawks have made 2 wonderful picks- 2 energetic and savvy athletes who can’t wait to get in there, and all Moore can do is whine about picks that no longer have any relevance. This is great start for a young, hardworking team and they deserve some home-town support and enthusiasm. I pull for the Hawks win or lose, and think the AJC should pull the plug on this complainer, this poor excuse for a sportswriter- if the Hawks make a strong run, I’m sure Moore will be right on the bandwagon then- telling us he saw it all along. Come on, AJC- get us a professional to cover Atlanta sports! Go you Hawks and don’t listen to this carping low-life!

Never thought of myself as a Terrence Trumpeter, but I liked the commentary a lot. Passing on Paul and D Williams was a folly worthy of repeating ad nauseum. It set back the franchise and needs to be spotlighted if Atlanta is ever to hold the Hawks accountable.

This was like aspirin to my Vick-induced headache. It was EXTREMELY positive to see the same Atlanta crowd that gets unfairly labeled bad get good press. Even when they were bad, the small crowds that did go to the Hawks game cheered but you never hear that, just how they don’t do this for the Falcons/Braves. Anyway, the team played like a team that is tired of losing. There was effort from EVERYBODY. Marvin and Sheldon even pitched in well. JJ was his usual incredible self and the rooks Law and Horford did what I thought they would- help NOW. With Josh Smith doing his thing on defense and offense, this team looked GOOD! I’ve been beating the drum for these Hawks at my job( and getting laughed at) since the draft and I’m so-oooo glad they didn’t let me down (I’m not used to that!). Yeah T Moore we missed out on a couple of players but there isn’t anything we can do about that, but I guess this wouldn’t be the ajc if one of you guys didn’t kick dirt in our face about it. Thanks for reminding us about that amist the good vibe of this victory but not even you guys can spoil this one. THE FIRST OPENING NIGHT VICTORY IN NINE YEARS BABY! I’ve read enough of your comments to know you are much more of an instigator/antagonist than an informed sports writer. Why else would you start out with all of the praise and glory, only to end up with your shoulda, coulda crap. Last night was the start of the Hawks NBA season. Great win Hawks. I was very excited to see the Hawks not get down after Dallas erased the 16 point lead. Horford is for real. He is a beast on the glass. There were too many 2nd shots when he came out of the game. Law is for real too. I was very impressed with his ability to get to the hole. JJ is still JJ and Lue is steady and a calming force on the team. When I saw the title of the article I thought T was going to hit on the fact that we still don’t have a legit 2nd scorer. As much as I love J Smoove and continue to hope Marvin will show some reason why we drafted him number 2 overall, I still don’t see it. J Smoove is one of the most exciting players in basketball but is basketball IQ is not where it needs to be. Everytime he gets a rebound and leads the break I hold my breathe thinking a pass into the bleachers is coming. And will someone please tell him to stop hoisting up 3’s. Thats not his strength, go to the hole. Marvin I really do like you but I didn’t see one aspect of his game that looked like it improved. Still handle is suspect, cant play with his back to the basket, and his dribble drive game still looks weak. After that I’m still excited about this year as I think JJ and some timely 4th quarter shooting from Lue will get us 46 wins.

You started with a positive message and ended (last two sentences) with a positive comment concerning the first game of the season. That was really enough as the article should have simply focused on the game. The comments in the middle of the article should have been a separate article because it did not fit in this one. If you want to speak about decisions that were made two and three years ago then do that on another day. I was disappointed about some of those decisions but yesterday was about focusing on the energy, effort, and execution that took place last night.

Nice work Terry. Your job at the AJC is to write or invent controversy. Facts are just inconvenient obstacles. Your are not a journalist, you are a shock jock.

The AJC is a mediocre paper and you are one of its principal assets. Anything to attract attention. Anything to sell more subscriptions.

Fellow writers must cringe at the notion that you are an associate.

First and foremost, Acie Law is a PG. Secondly, if Paul or Derron were Hawks, we would not have the scoring threat of Marvin. The team would have enjoyed a temporary early spike in wins, but that would have put Horford and Law out of our reach.

You know, as well as I do, that Billy Knight has built this team correctly. You know it, but you won’t write it because that would be stepping outside of your designated role at the AJC.

Here are some questions for you. Are you a corporate yes man? Do you really believe your writings, or are you a happy w*******? There are names for African Americans who do the bidding for their White bosses. Are you one of them?

Grow a pair and write the truth….even if it doesn’t sell papers. That is, if you have depth of knowledge and the skill to put it on paper.

The Hawks passed on Conley to get Horford, a player you make little mention about. We’ll see if you fail to mention him later this year when he’s getting strong ROY consideration.

It seems to me that you wanted to write a sour article about the Hawks and tried to change it mid-stream when the Hawks did nothing but impress.

I don’t know, what’s wrong with Terence, hawks play well and Acie Law was great in his debut. at least give this team a chance, let them play a few games.

Enjoyed the game. Team looked very good and hung on to win in crunch time. I hate to admit this, but Terrance is correct some help is still needed. I think it can be found in more playing time for the rookies & Salem.

My problem with this game was an old one that has not been resolved, that is little point guards taking the ball to the rack without any opposition.

My point, Devin Harris (starter) has Dallas’s first 10 points, Jason Terry (back up) had 15-18 points? and some cat named Baera(3rd pg) had about 15 point and turn the game in the 3rd quarter. That’s a little over 40 points from the point guards. Our small people have to play more to stop this; 6’9” guys can’t stop these little guys from going to the rack, and if they do, there should be “repercussions & consequences” on a regular basis. Why want Woody let Salem play, dude has said he is willing to play defense and we should develope West as our Defensive Stopper. Great game, but we have got to get better in the paint and on perimeter defense.

Why was Herb Brown removed from Mike Woodson bench staff after Woodson and him have been together for years??? Great win last night for the boys I think they also turned the ball over to much and took to many quick shot when they should have ran a little offense. but they played hard and great if they play that well all season then look out NBA the ATLANTA HAWKS ARE COMING AFTER YOU!!!! BUT PLEASE ANSWER MY QUESTION ABOUT HERB BROWN HE IS THE MAN THAT THE HAWKS PLAYERS LOVE??

Geez Terrance, I thought you where a good sports writer BUT, you still bring up the old news. The Hawks didn’t draft Chris Paul, They took Marvin Williams, etc… GET SOME NEW MATERIAL. You are like an old washed up comedian using the same jokes that he used in 1952… Give it up this is a new year and a new HAWKS team. Last night the reminded me of the days of Dominique in the Omni. The city of Atlanta was excited and ready for this… get on board or you will be writing for Macon Telegraph.

Terrence, you are absolutely right! We could have and in fact should have taken Chris Paul or Deron Williams. Conley Jr. I don’t agree with because we needed Horford more. But if you put Chris Paul or Deron Williams on this team and we are talking NBA Finals. But the past is the past and as much as we hate to look at Chris Paul highlights and say he could have been doing that for us. There is nothing we can do about it now. Hopefully, Acie Law will develop into the point guard we need him to be. Never mind the detractors Terrence, your column was right on the money.

At first I was amazed at what I was reading from Terrance. Then I got to that point in the article that I knew was coming, and my brain played that “waa waaa waaa waaaaaaaaaa” punchline sound bite. Terrance Moore, you are utterly pathetic…

Terence,

Your columns are like a Shakespearean tragedy — I know what the end result is going to be, yet I put myself through the paces to read your column, in some sort of sado-masochistic way.

What I’m alluding to, is, can’t we just celebrate the Hawks for one day? Please! I absolutely detest it when something good happens but you butt in with your “buts….” Why can’t we just be happy for this franchise, for one day, Terence? After the pathetic, lackluster Braves and the bad news Falcons, here we have a young Hawks team that has won a game against a tough opponent. Can’t we just pause and be happy for this franchise, its owners and its fans? Your intentions may be good but sometimes, you are so clinical that you seem to be the guy who wants to spoil the fun and spirit of others. Let us please raise our glasses to this team. Let us hope they perform consistently and competently this season. Let the good times roll. Terence, could you plz keep quiet for a while?

Reading this kind of crap is very unfortunte. What an insult to journalism that this “columnist” can’t even do the basic research to realize that Acie Law was a PG in college and not an SG.

This article sounds like some crap written on deadline by a guy that knows nothing about the Hawks. So he chose the Chris Paul angle (that happened three years ago, loser).

Articles like this are the reason media is criticized. The fact that the AJC let such obvious laziness be printed shows how little anyone at that paper knows about the Hawks. Let Sekou do the Hawks coverage, Terrence. Because you obviously haven’t seriously watched the Hawks since Nique.

By Terence Tom Moore

First off let Sekou handle writing about the Hawks. Get over the Chris Paul and Deron Williams thing. .. Law was a pg not a sg… Stick to bashing Vick because clearly you are not suited for talk about basketball. Kelvin the Hornets have not made the playoffs since they drafted Paul so how in the hell would he make the Hawks a finals team?… Terence Uncle Tom Moore I hope you get that job at ESPN you have been lobbying for so I can see you on tv stutter, spit, and lisp all over the place. Terrance,

wtf? Seriously. The guy could be a complete bust. Acie Law >>> Conley.

Terrance Moore,

You NEVER have anything good to say about Atlanta/Georgia teams. You are constantly finding something to rip on. Have you ever considered moving to another city, so then it would actually make sense for you to trash Atlanta sports teams?

Let’s hear it for the Hawks, city of Atlanta!! They’ve been stuggling for a long time and now we have something to look forward to!!!

I need some of that stuff that Mr. Moore is smoking. He really believes Mike Conley is a better option at point than A.C. Law. Conley cant even sniff the jocks of Deron Williams, Chris Paul or the other elite point guards. Law isnt there yet but I believe Law is better than Conley. Are you tired of hearing about those other guards or is it just me. Mr. Moore please write about something else or PLEASE RESIGN.

Terrance, First, get over the picks that we didn’t get. That’s over and done. Let’s deal with what we have now, which is a group of young men that had a great game last night. Does it mean they’re going to win the championship? Probably not? Does it mean they’re going to the playoff? Who knows. What it does mean is they looked very different from the team of the past several years. They had a lead, they lost it,and they didn’t fold. I think that means, this team has hope, and we as their fans have some too? Let us have it, please.

A piece of advice to you T.Moore! Please make it a point of duty to always tune in to “open line” on Sundays between 5 a.m and 8 a.m. It is a three hour class and you pay nothing, but you get a lot of wisdom from it. It seems to me you wasted all these years attending freepers’ university. You obviously do not have any clue about Acie Law’s biography. Please stay with AJC Ad and leave the sport commentary to Sekou Smith. Thank you.

WOw, you are dumb. How are you gonna say that we passed up Conley? Conley sucks. Acie Law is already better than him and we drafted him with the 11th pick. Don’t say that Joe Johnson needs help as much as Kobe or Lebron. Joe has a lot better supporting cast than both of them. We have depth on every single position. Can’t believe I’m saying this, but GOOD JOB BILLY KNIGHT!!

AJC,

That’s it, I’m finally done. On Monday morning my subscription is being cancelled first thing. I cannot except the “quality” of the journalists that write for the paper. Count me out.

Terence Moore has long been a joke in the ATL community and I’m perplexed how this guy still has a job. He is totally out of touch with the city and the fan base and has incredibly bad timing. Yes, the Hawks have made some drafting mistakes but we all realize that we can’t change any of them. However, drafting Horford over Conley was certainly not a mistake as Conley is not nearly ready. The Hawks needed help right NOW and Conley is another 2-3 year project. Horford will be an NBA All Star within a few years and is ready NOW. Acie Law looks solid at PG NOW as well. This Hawks team will make a run at a playoff spot. Next year they will go deep into the playoffs. Why does a writer have to reach back into the ugly past when were all ready to move on? The answer is that the writer is badly out of touch with the community and it’s no longer fashionable to crap on the Hawks. Somebody go get Terrance the memo because he makes an a* out of himself…again. I’ll take comfort in knowing that Terrance’s horrific and out of touch writing will no longer be sitting in my driveway.

TERRENCE IT IS TIME TO STOP! Before Vick got in trouble I hear from you the Falcons have to get rid of Vick, and you got your wish and there now 1-6! NOW you want to start degrading the Hawks, a young atheltic team that played there hearts out last night. Maybe that’s it you were NOT ATHELTIC WHEN YOU WERE younger so anybody with athelticism you try to tear apart i.e. Acie Law! It will be alright, you are a writer try just doing that without degrading every atheltic person you see!!!

Seriously is correct. T. Moore had already written his article before the game began and had to edit it at the last minute. He was sure the Hawks would lose and was ready to pile on. Moore does not appear to do his homework. The Hawks have many angles to draw interesting articles from if the research is done.

I actually like some of Terence Moore’s articles, but this one is just idiotic. Why bring up Mike Conley, when clearly the Hawks passed on him to draft Horford? Maybe I was watching a different game, but in the game I watched Horford was a beast who may have dominated even more if not for foul trouble.

Great win by the Hawks yesterday. Hopefully when Zaza gets healthy Horford retains his starting spot, although I’m not holding my breath.

From thememphisedge.com:

Rookie Mike Conley continues to make strides in practice. Still, there seems to be no immediate plans to work Conley into the rotation barring injury or foul trouble with starting point guard Damon Stoudamire and backup Kyle Lowry.

“I just don’t like playing three points guards,” Iavaroni said.

Uhm, Terance, not right now, because it would be phoney, but at some point, I hope you’ll admit that Marvin Williams is becoming a very good NBA player. The more I watch him, the more I see the reality of what EVERYBODY (except you) said about him on draft night, that he might be the best player to come out of that draft five years down the road… Well, it’s three years down the road and he’s looking pretty good.

Last thing, say what you want, but this collection of Hawks, critique them as you may, started this season by leaving the crib, finding one of the biggest bullies in the neighborhood, picking a fight, and winning it…

Why does Moore recive flack…because there are a bunch of homers here. Nothing wrong with that..and in the Eastern Conf. the Hawks are no better off than most of the other teams but they are essentially a little less than Clippers East. It’s obvious Moore bailed on atleast the coach and GM 2 seasons ago..if not the owners. Who can really blame him? No playoffs…this organization has to earn respect. But low expectations is the norm in order to cheer for this team. A near playoff run..even if it fails seems like everyone’s acceptible goal. They were supposed to be there the past 2 yrs and nada. The Hawks have had no stable pg..and Moore is simply stating Law could be more of the same (an unatural fit..not lack of ability). Hortford is a plus but takes minutes away from Smith and (big)Williams…and possibly ZaZa. So while a win is promising..he’s saying the fundamentals most likely haven’t been addressed. There are no effective playmakers ont he squad…they can shoot..but the offense has no guidance.
