Dogs could have done without the foolishness
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Jacksonville — So much for discipline, poise and class. They could return as staples of Georgia’s football program under Mark Richt, but it’ll take a while. They vanished on Saturday at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, where the Bulldogs kept making fools of themselves early and often.
They were fools by choice. That’s the scary thing.
They were fools in victory. That’s the only thing that matters to most in the Bulldog Nation, especially since Georgia played out of its mind during the wildest game you’ll ever see to slay the Mighty Gators.
You can make a case that the Bulldogs had to be fools in this one if they wanted to end their phobia against Florida and if they wanted to keep their hopes of reaching the SEC championship game alive. What the Bulldogs were doing before in this highly overrated rivalry wasn’t working. I mean, it isn’t a rivalry when the other guy keeps knocking the red and black out of you.
So, with a 42-30 triumph in hand, the Bulldogs did a massive Lambeau Leap into the stands. They watched the normally subdued Richt take his highly expressive ways during the game into the aftermath with a passionate kiss of his wife, Katharyn, before 84,481 witnesses. The Bulldogs just went bonkers. After all, they’d lost 15 of 17, eight of nine and two straight to the Gators. Not because Georgia wasn’t as talented, but because Georgia wasn’t as tough.
That’s why the Bulldogs decided to become fools along the way to shocking Florida with a lot of running back Knowshon Moreno, the clutch play of quarterback Matthew Stafford and a defense that turned The Great Tim Tebow into only a good quarterback who spent much of the game scraping himself off the ground.
It’s just that you don’t have to become fools to do what you have to do to slay personal demons. Among the lowlights for what was one of the nation’s most composed teams under Richt, Georgia was penalized five times for personal fouls or unsportsmanlike stuff.
In the first quarter.
Once, two Georgia players were signaled for face-mask infractions on the same kickoff. There was Mohamed Massaquoi creating thousands of orange-and-blue boos after scoring a touchdown and doing his version of the Gator Chomp in the end zone. What triggered the silliness was Richt allowing his players to sprint from the sidelines moments into the game as if they’d never seen a touchdown before. That was when every one of the Bulldogs did their coach’s bidding by jumping and screaming and boogieing while smothering Moreno after he scored the game’s first points.
The Gators weren’t amused. The Bulldogs couldn’t care less, especially with their suddenly ruthless leader.
“Oh, Coach Richt told us during the week that, after we scored that first touchdown, you can have an excessive celebration,” said Georgia defensive end Marcus Howard, adding that Richt informed the team that he didn’t care about the 15-yard penalty that always comes from such an action. “That’s what everybody did [after Moreno’s touchdown]. They just ran out there and formed a big, old Dog Pile.”
Wonderful.
Apparently, when nobody was looking, a bunch of little green men descended from the cloudy north Florida sky to zap the real Mark Richt away in a spaceship.
Who was this Mark Richt?
This was the desperate Mark Richt, and he was coaching a desperate Georgia team, and you know what they say about desperate folks. They do all sorts of crazy things in an attempt to end their desperate ways.
Still, when contrasted with the Mark Richt of the previous six-plus seasons at Georgia, this was baffling, shocking, bizarre. Mostly, this was hypocritical. Just two weeks ago, when Georgia last played, a visibly peeved Richt threw a fit after a bunch of Bulldogs celebrated at midfield at Vanderbilt after the Bulldogs’ victory in the final seconds.
That was the real Mark Richt before the Bulldogs’ mission became to beat Florida no matter what. The thing is, an overly due Georgia bunch against the Gators could have done the same regardless, but we’ll never know.
The fools ruled.

I didn’t necessarily agree with the celebration after the first td, but, you can’t argue with the end result. UGA whipped UF. Why don’t you do us a favor and simply quit writing about UGA, period?

Georgia has come out flat every game. I think they could be undefeated now if they had not come out flat and let other teams get in front of them. If they had come out flat with Florida, the same would have happened. They sprinted and jumped out onto the field instead of walking arm in arm. You could see the excitement in the players from the moment the game began. Richt knew the players and crowd needed something to take this game to the next level. Meyer is a lowlife who calls a timeout after the other team is running their play- he does not play by the rules. He is not a gentleman SEC coach so he does not deserve to be treated like one! He got a dose of his own medicine and it worked!!! GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!

Terrance, you are the biggest damn fool of all. Of course the ajc, and it’s racist card leader, has to rain on our parde. Can’t you just wait till later in the week to ruin our buzz? The Auburn kicker did the chomp after they beat Fla, so what’s the big deal with Mo-mass doing it? The UGA football team has been w/o a pulse pretty much the season, and celebrating to get everyone into the emotion was a way to get life into our team. The program still has class, and I believe that UFag had a few personal fouls of their own. Go move to Gainesville and write for their paper you bum.

I couldn’t disagree with this column more. It was an excellent move to fire up the team and the crowd and create a change in the 17 year-old momentum in this series. Hopefully that action signals the moment when the Dawgs were no longer intimidated or psyched out heading into the Georgia-Florida game.
You talk like he had the team go out and take cheap shots on Tebow or knock folks around after the play. It was just a celebration, and the team took the 15 yard penalty that came with it. (The separate taunting penalty for Velasco is a separate issue.)

It wasn’t as in your face as logo stomping… it wasn’t instructing a player to go after someone’s knee or ankle. It was a CELEBRATION after a TOUCHDOWN! and it was a TEAM celebration as well. it was unconventional and against the rules and he paid the price for it. In fact he paid it time and a half because one of his players took it upon himself to taunt. But, as a team they did not taunt. They celebrated.

Moore you are one complete idiot! Why don’t you go back up north somewhere? “mighty Gators”??? get a grip, according to Gary D and Vern L, it was Georgia VS Tebow…whenever Ga did something good, it ws because Tebow was hurt, whenever Ga did something bad, it was because Tebow was great, very poor announcing, just as your article. It is college football, they play for the fun and love of the game, they are not PAID. It is fine to see young men get excited and jubilant. They needed a spark, they needed for the coach to do something different, it worked. How long have you been around for this rivalry? Not near long enough, remember when they scored 50 between the hedges? If you can’t say something good then write about Tech! You FOOL.

Moore, I truly don’t think Coach Richt was disrespecting Coach Meyer. He was merely trying to light a fire in the team. The celebration was not at the expense of Florida but at the expense of the Georgia which they were prepared to take. You have to admit that it set the tone for Georgia and their intensity during the game. I believe it was a motivational boost and to challenge the team to rise to the occassion. Coach Richt is best at motivating these young for whom he cares a great deal.

Terrence, you’re an idiot. All we hear from the media is how UGA needs someone to build a fire under them, and how CMR is too laid back and unemotional during big games. Now, all of the sudden, UGA is a classless program for showing emotion during a big win? Sorry, boys, you can’t have it both ways. So what if our players do the Gator Chomp? They have been doing the same tauntingto us for years. The complaint department is usually closed whenever the UF fans and players taunt opposing teams and fans with that same Gator Chomp. Everyone enjoyed it whenever AU kicker did it, so why can’t we? Go on back up to Notre Dame,Terrence…oh, I forgot, the ND team can’t win sh1t this season. It was a big win, well deserved, and you media types are just pi$$ed off because you all are in love with Teblow, and have been kissing his a$$ since last year, and he fell flat on his face this week….which made you all look like horse sh!t for not giving UGA a chance at all. Fact is, nobody in the SEC is unbeatable in conference play this season…not even the Mighty Gators and their media darling, Teblow.

The Bulldogs victory is sweet but maybe just a little to much for this fan when considering the behavior. I can appreciate Coach Richt making every effort to fire up his team (it worked). Beating the Gators in Jacksonville is a rare accomplishment and the Dogs deserve credit for a great game plan. Does all the celebrating and penalties remind anybody of another Coach who is now in South Carolina ? Whatever your opinion , a win is a win , but at what cost to the dignity and respect of the coaching staff.

Terrance, I see your point, but have a very different take on CMR’s ‘dark side’ coming out. I don’t think our clean cut leader went that far over the top on this one. He just encouraged his guys to be looser and to have more fun. Les Miles down here in Baton Rouge has done much the same thing with great results. Getting Urban Meyer angry right off the bat played into our hands- we stayed loose while he stayed tense. Did you notice the difference in the way the coaches looked on the sidelines, the way they talked to their troops, their reactions to the refs, etc? CMR outwitted UM (I decided to omit the C on your blog). In other words, our guy psyched their guy. IMO, we have a long way to go before we turn into rude boys and thugs. But we took a strong step toward creatively engaging our masculine side, so I’m all up with the program. GIve it some thought.

Lighten up Terence and stop being so negative about everything. Georgia didn’t wait until the game was in hand to show an on field emotional display. It was in the 1st quarter and they still had to play an enitre football game. If you think about it, it took some big balls to pull that off. Richt knew UF would be fired up after that but he didn’t care. I’m sure if Notre Dame pulled that stunt and beat USC you would call it a stroke of genius.

Richt was far from desperate…..as CBS pointed out, no coach has beat him 3 straight times.
I read ajc.com for weeks where columnists and fans alike were pining for Van Gorder and the team that was ferocious to the tune of leading the SEC in penalties year after year, and now when we show it again— people are crying foul?
Was it overboard? Probably. The other penalties make it look worse? Maybe. But college football has become so sterilized, I enjoyed seeing a little bit of silly fun. What would sports be without the occasional silliness?
Kudos to Richt. Kudos to the Dawgs.
Mr. Moore, with all due respect, lighten up.

Terence, you call Coach Richt a hypocrit but you are the hypocrit in this matter. In your previous column, you said that the Dawgs were a “psychological mess at the sight of orange and blue” and that the Dog’s needed to stop making excuses for their inability to win against Florida. Well, just because you happen not to like the way Coach Richt went about exercising the “demons” you referred to, there was clearly a method to his madness and his plan worked.
The Dawgs not only didn’t back down against the Gators when the going got tough, they came back time and time again. Sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures and Caoch Richt apparently decided that this was the time.
You got one thing right, the Dawgs couldn’t care less about your disapproval of Coach Richt’s methods. Maybe Coach Petrino should try something similar to exercise all the demons surrounding the Falcons right now. Go Dawgs!
Whether Georgia players and coaches wish to admit it or not, visions of Gators always are rattling around their heads. It has turned them into a psychological mess at the sight of orange and blue. That said, Richt told reporters earlier this week that he doesn’t discuss that 15-out-of-17 thing with his players, but you just knew he had his fingers crossed while uttering those words. He even suggested as much later during a private moment.

Mr. Moore, I just have to ask you this one thing. Are you God?
I’m asking because in every single article that you’re written, you’re always criticizing someone like you are this perfect person that has never done anything wrong in your entire life.
You have managed to find something wrong with anything good that happens in sports. We’re tired of your articles where you come off like you are some kind of “Holier than Thou” movie critic that can find the bad in any kind of sporting event. You’re attitude reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skit with the character of “Debbie Downer.” Debbie could always find some kind of way to ruin a feel good moment with a completely asinine comment or a fact that just sucked the life out of a party.
I sincerely hope that the Georgia fans aren’t going to read your little article and get down on a big win against the Florida Gators. Take your bad attitude and your half sadly written articles to another city where someone will actually care about them.

As someone who wears their feelings on their sleeve (like you did at the ESPN Town Hall meeting), it seems to me that stooping to name calling is very childish and petty. I guess your mother never taught you that. It’s obvious that you were never talented enough to be an athlete, and you are envious. DAWGS 42, lizards 30 … ‘nuf said. Way to go, Dawgs! You just don’t get it, do you, Terrance? Dawgs finally get the monkey off their back and all you can write about is Coach Richt’s new motivational tactics? Coach Richt has proven himself over and over. He is, without any doubt, a man of class, conviction, and character. He wins consistently, and he does it with honor. Only 3 active coaches in America have a higher winning percentage than Coach Richt (Tressel, Carrol, and Meyer, I think - haven’t done the research to know for sure - don’t crucify me for it, please). Sure, I would rather my Dawgs have won the game without the drama and penalties, but you can be sure of one thing: if we had to have drama and penalties to get over the hump, then so be it. I’m just thrilled that we finally finished the drill, and I won’t apologize for it! Coach Richt and the Bulldog Nation do not owe you an explanation, Terrance Moore. Get over yourself. You sound like a petty, pious, self-absorbed, egotistical knucklehead. Dawgs won the game, Dawgs beat their bitter rival, Dawgs stopped the bleeding, and IT FEELS GREAT! Style points and penalties be damned. And yes, Terrance, no matter what you or the rest of the media tries to say, the Georgia-Florida game is still a rivalry. Always has been. Always will be. THERE’S NOTHING LIKE BEING A BULLDOG ON A SATURDAY NIGHT! ONCE A DAWG, ALWAYS A DAWG … HOW SWEET IT IS!

I mean really, is this the most creativity that you have? Is this the best you can do? What, did you have a quick deadline? Was this really the defining story of the game?
Why would someone who told the GA team to stop its whining and just win the game turn around and whine about how they won? Get a clue.

Apparently, when nobody was looking, a bunch of little green men descended from the cloudy north Florida sky to zap the real Mark Richt away in a spaceship.
What a stupid sentence. I’m surprised it made it past your editor.

I would like to suggest that all you fellow Dawgs lighten up on Terrence and enjoy the sweet taste of victory. You know you aren’t going to stop reading this column and getting infuriated by TM’s out-of-the-box viewpoint. Besides, insulting people is in poor taste and we (the Bulldog Nation) ought to consider setting a higher standard than followers of all those other teams. The team with Vince, Hershel, UGA, the Hedges, and Larry Munson will always be #1 where it counts. Now would any of those icons approve of these insults when we just in effect told the Gators to “chomp on this?”

Everyone of you who have posted on this blog are morons. If UGA would have lost, you would be saying it was a bad move. I am a UGA fan, season ticket holder since 1989 and found the celebration embarassing. Richt is a hypocrite for letting the players rush the field like that. It could have started a brawl and was totally uncalled for. We are Georgia, not Florida State!

It must be nice to get paid do nothing more than criticize others and get paid for it. Did you go to night school to get your creditials for this job, that obvious requires no intelligence. You manage no one, motivate no one, teach no one, inspire no one, make last minute decisions with huge consequnces…what inspires you to breathe in oxygen every day. Do your realize Terrance that you are waisting oxygen, just by being you!

Make up your mind Terence. Last week your column said it was time for UGA to put up or shut up. They finally win and your still complaining. Who cares about some stupid celebration penalty in the grand scheme of the game? I don’t understand why you feel the need to criticize instead of complementing the merits of the game. I suspect it’s only to “stir the pot” to sell papers and elicit a response from the Dawg Nation. Well…mission accomplished.

Obviously Mr. Moore, you must not be familiar with the entire GA-FL series (that’d be quite a bit longer than the last 17 years). GA leads the series, thank you. We played better. PERIOD. Tebow saw more turf this game than in this entire season. Maybe you should graze there with him, because we let the big DAWG eat. Have a blessed evening. GO DAWGS!!!

Desperate? I have to smile at that definition, since it so well captured the ambience of Urban Meyer’s coaching this afternoon.
What a wonderful turnaround Mark Richt affected when given the luxury of an off week instead of having to overcome the Gators’ annual benefit of yet another two week prep for UGA.
It was…. MAGIC.

Guess what…football is an emotional sport. Georgia has been devoid of emotion all year and this game was a long time coming. You guys have criticized Coach Richt week after week because he is not emotional enough. Then when he turns up the heat, you are embarrassed. There is a ton of difference between celebrating a touchdown and dancing on the visitor’s emblem after a win. I seem to remember Auburn’s kicker mocking the gator chomp after kicking the winning field goal and he was praised. The other penalties that you talk about were bull crap calls that could happen anytime. The bottom line is that we need to get happy, we needed to play with emotion , we needed to make a statement. Mark this win as a turning point for UGA for the rest of the year and the future.
Hey…It didn’t seem to mind UGA President Michael Adams as he gave Coach Richt a hug after the game.

Terrence,
What a worthless column. This team needed a fire lit under them, and CMR did just that. It wasn’t unclassy for the team to celebrate in that fashion or for CMR to encourage them to do so - this is very different than the Vandy incident two weeks ago. Velasco crossed the line, and was called out for that.
The Dawgs let the Gators know they had come to play today: they were fired up, and ready to go. This kind of enthusiasm and energy from the team would’ve been mighty helpful in Knoxville or at home against the HBC.
I just hope this is the same team that shows up against Troy, Auburn, UK and the bugs
Why don’t you go write about a team you like instead of trashing the Dawgs and the coaching staff week after week?
It’s great to be a Gator Hater tonight ya’ll!!!

Kudos to Mark Richt for allowing his players to show some emotion and rally together. I have no problem with any of the celebration, because it was done as a team. And for a writer to criticize a coach for enjoying a victory and kissing his wife after the game? Are you kidding me? Poor article, poor journalist, enough said.

Terrance, this is the kind of analysis that makes me think you’re a fool…. Ridiculous comments in your column. Mark Richt did not tell his team to go stomp on Florida’s logo. He told his team to celbrate a touchdown with each other. In my opinion, This is exactly the kind of shakeup in mindset the dogs needed. Quit being so businesslike.. and Richt shoudl be praised for trying a new approach to get their heads in a different space. If he had told them to do it at the end of the game, I would agree with you… but this in no way affects Richt’s level of class as a coach. What do you have against Georgia anyway? Way to keep putting the home team down any chance you get. You should go to work for the Gainesville, FL paper.

I am shocked so many people are defending what UGA did. If this would have backfired and Fla won by 30 you same people would be calling for Richt’s head. More importantly ask yourselves this. If Miami or FSU in the 90’s would have done this what would you think? Thugs? Classless? Disgrace? Is it the end of the world? Of course not but it was very disappointing and I think UGA fans are being hypocritical. Aren’t you guys the same ones that hate Spurrier for such things?

Mr. Moore, As usual you choose to go down the NEGATIVE road. It is like you have an “axe to grind” with Georgia. You criticize CMR and Bulldogs all this week. However the Bulldogs answered the bell and DOMINATED the Gators. I know you wanted to see the Dawgs stumble so you criticize the team and CMR in particular. I will say this… despite what you say I will take CMR any day over any coach in America. He is all about CHARACTER and TEAM! That is “Moore” than I can say about you!

Go Dawgs we won and what this man says doesn’t matter at all. We are the Georgia Bulldogs and that is all that matters. We support our team and I think they should do this at every game. It shows that they care and are working as a team and that is all that really matters. If we can keep this energy up we might have us a damn good rest of the year.

I want to know where all the loud mouth gator fans are now? They chomped too hard, I guess and don’t have anything to say.
As for the celebration, I don’t think it was any more classless than Florida’s usual behavior. No more so than Urban Meyer’s time out that made the Auburn kicker make the field goal twice. It was no more classless than when Harvin spiked the ball after a big play or than that kid diving into the end zone after the interception. Florida has always been classless in the years they’ve beat Georgia. Their players are posterboys for unsportsman like conduct!

Two points: 1. THE leader on this team is Moreno. Has been since his first time on the field. 2. Coaches routinely intentionally draw a dead ball penalty, specifically to create an advantage. For example, delaying the snap on a punt to back up a bit and have more chance at pinning an opponent near their own goal line, no one complains. Florida did it in this game. I did not think it showed Meyer as lacking class. Richt intentionally drew a dead ball penalty, no one got hurt (compare that with Florida guy nailing the kneeling Stafford). So UGA drew a penalty, made a statement, and got an advantage. So what.
TM you should have been writing about point #1 above. That was the story.

TM,dogs did what they needed to do;shake things up. This team has slept through most of it’s games this year. The problem I had with all the personal fouls was the field position we gave the reptiles. Had they not started with great field position, we may have won this game going away. I hope CMR has awakened a “sleeping giant”. Moreno is a special talent we have not seen since Garrison Hearst. Stafford looked comfortable having to only manage the game and not having to press himself. Hope dogs take care of business next week. Troy is the kind of game where we come out like zombies and end up in a fight for our lives. TM, if you feel like wacking a team/coach in your column-how about your beloved golden domers. UGA would be so lucky to “scrimmage” such a pathetic excuse for a footnall team.

I can’t believe you criticize Coach Richt for kissing his wife! Why is it poor sportsmanship when the opposing team does the gator chomp but not when the gators do it? During the play where two UGA players were called for face mask penalties, they were not flagrant; however, the Fla. kick returner grabbed the face mask of one of the UGA defenders on the same play, and that wasn’t called. UGA does exhibit discipline, poise, and class, unlike you. I am proud of the team and the coaches!
