Brooking consistent through ups and downs

Terence Moore

You’re Keith Brooking, and you’re as proud as they come as an NFL player. Despite a season or three to the contrary, your team is evolving into The Great Pumpkin again before Halloween, and you’ve seen this horror movie throughout your decade with the Falcons.

Seriously, now. How in the name of Jessie Tuggle do you keep from screaming? And do you ever think of peeking between your fingers to see as little of these Falcons nightmares in progress as possible?

“Man, I’ve been through a lot in this game,” said Brooking, telling the truth with wide eyes at his Flowery Branch locker. He’ll take his middle linebacker spot tonight at the Georgia Dome with another 1-4 team sprinting toward oblivion. Large factions of the locker room dislike the rookie NFL head coach. The old starting quarterback is heading to prison for dogfighting, the new one has a career record as a starter in the league of 24-47, and the backup is strikingly underwhelming.

If that isn’t enough, the offensive line is dreadful and injured, which means the pass-rushing goblins of the New York Giants are on the verge of embarrassing the home team on Monday Night Football.

Guess what, though? As was the case during those other seasons of woe for the Falcons, Brooking has remained Brooking. This time, he is prospering after a slow start. He also isn’t the best linebacker on the team anymore, but only because the streaking Michael Boley is flirting with becoming the best linebacker in the league. Still, Brooking is operating in the vicinity of that Georgia Tech standout via East Coweta High who led the Falcons in tackles for six straight years and ended last season just shy of the Pro Bowl for a sixth consecutive time.

The point is, since Brooking is continuing his habit of not giving up no matter what, his teammates should spend the rest of the season following his example.

No matter what.

“The one thing that I know, and that I have strong convictions about, and that I believe with all of my heart, is that your mind-set, your beliefs and your work ethic never changes,” said Brooking, unintentionally doing a Tuggle imitation, both vocally and physically. Just like Brooking, Tuggle was a perennial all-everything linebacker who played for a bunch of lousy Atlanta teams before retiring after the 2000 season. And, just like Brooking, Tuggle always discovered ways to speak of his overall NFL despair without throwing his teammates under the Falcons’ downward-chugging train.

Added Brooking, “I’ve just had so many scenarios take place throughout the course of my career with the Falcons. Injuries. [Significant] guys going down. Three-, four-, five-game losing streaks. But I’ve also had a lot of success here.”

Well, not a lot, but we understand Brooking’s point. He spent his rookie season with the Falcons in 1998 when they made their only trip to the Super Bowl. It’s just that the following season, bruising runner Jamal Anderson was lost for the year after he damaged his knee during the second game, and the Falcons dropped to 5-11 when they lost six of their opening seven games.

In 2002, the Falcons managed their Miracle at Green Bay, where they became the first team to beat the Packers at Lambeau Field in the playoffs. It’s just that Michael Vick broke one of his miracle legs during an exhibition game that following season to trigger another 5-11 finish for the Falcons.

Then, in 2004, the Falcons reached the NFC championship game, but they’ve fluctuated between mediocre and awful ever since.

Brooking sighed. Not out of indifference over his plight with a franchise that never has had back-to-back winning seasons, but out of frustration. “I mean, you face it, and you approach it with the same mentality,” Brooking said. “The old cliché is that you not only have to know how to deal with failure and disappointment, but you also have to know how to deal with success, and you do it the same way. You do it with consistency.”

The Falcons are into consistency, but only when it comes to resembling a mess more often than not.

What a class act. Mr. Brooking is a fine example of how the game should be played and how to be a man off the field.I know a lot of atlantans do not like him because he actually did the unthinkable and got married and then had kids. Imagine the scandal. Then the bum shows up neat and well dressed and not stoned(humpf..MV) I mean what good is a girlfriend if you don’t beat her up or kill her dog. Why does he not have 9 kids with 9 different women?(Mr. Henry) Where’s the dreds and pants hangin off his butt? Why does he not get with the program and wreck his car at 3 am and leave the scene ? How about a couple of DUI’s or illegal gun possession charges? And why in the hell does he actually speak like a educated person when he is in front of the media? Why does he not refer to himself in the third person? He leads the team for 6 years in tackles yet the democrats claim he is overrated. In the time of kids looking up to every idiot they see on TV or hear on the radio I strongly believe Mr. Brooking’s children will have to look no further than the other side of the dinner table to see their hero.

Mr. Brookings is one of the slowest and over-rated linebackers in the NFL. Constantly gets pushed around and can’t cover the pass over the middle. But, he is a “nice guy.” That and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee…

Brooking have not proved anything on the field. Maybe he is a very good leader in the locker room and off the field.

Maybe he can show some leadership, Like AC did last week by telling the coach, his game schemes sucks !

“Large numbers of the locker room dislike the rookie head coach.”

How about you quantify that with some actual FACT, Moore?

How about you name names, because I bet you made up that little nugget.

I bet the players who don’t like Petrino are the same players that Mora used to coddle, like Hall and Crumpler.

Well f@ck Hall and Crumpler. If they’re too selfish to buy into the new regime, then send them to Miami or St. Louis.

I love it, Moore. You’re tearing down Petrino, who’s suffering with a bad team that was coddled by a terrible coach, and are trying to make some of them into accountable men (you hear me MeAngelo Hall?).

Why is that, Moore. I wonder. And because of your history at this paper, I have to wonder if there isn’t a racial component to that. Seems to me that Lovie Smith might be out of a job at the end of the year. You might be thinking that, too. Well, as much as Lovie is better than Mora, his total bungling of his QB situation as well as his insane firing of the best DC in football (and doing it when all other positions had been filled like the @$$hole he is) because he viewed Riviera as a threat to his job makes me not want to see Lovie coach the Falcons.

How long before you start attatching Petrino’s name to college football jobs like Michigan or LSU without any proof, Moore?

Dude, you’re a piece of crap, and doesn’t matter what color your skin happens to be.

While Keith Brooking has a lot of heart, you’re fooling yourself if you can’t see that he’s on the downside of his career. He’s not the worst player on the defensive side of the ball but he’s not the best either. It’s time to start grooming someone else to take his place in a year or two.

The Vick apologists are out in force again. Unbelievable! Brooking is the class of the Falcon organization and a great player as well, but some of the so-called Falcon fans are too stupid and ignorant to realize it. True, he’s on the downside of a great career - and his past statistics support this. You Vick apologists need to accept reality - “King Mike” is done here. Go back to your holes and come up with a new campaign.

A guy forcefully pulls an 844-pound shark out of its natural habitat and allows it to slowly suffocate and die a painful death. The shark, which didn’t do anything wrong, is gutted and displayed before a crowd, and the man who brutally ended its innocent life is praised for setting a new record.

Meanwhile, Michael Vick kills some dogs and is vilified as the incarnation of Satan.

Think about that for a little while.

As for Brooking, he’s a good player who ideally needs other good players around him to showcase his ability. You’re not going to build an elite defense around him like Brian Urlacher or Ray Lewis. But that shouldn’t take away from what he is, which is a guy with very good instincts who knows how to play the game.

As for Petrino, is it really asking too much to allow him to get some players who fit his system on the roster before tearing him down publicly? Jim Moron appeared to be a good coach at first, because he won with Dan Reeves’ experienced veteran players. Once Moron was able to bring in players who fit his idiotic scheme, and subsequently showed that he couldn’t develop any of them, we all realized what a terrible coach he really was. Petrino’s in the opposite situation. Until he can flush out the Mora-stained players from the roster and replace them with quality NFL players that he can work on developing, it’s too early to pass judgment on his

There goes Uncle Terrance again, trying to appease the masses. Everybody and there mama knows that Brooking is the fourth best linebacker on this team. Everybody except Moore and a bunch of Bo and Luke Dukes that continue to sing his praises. He might be a good guy, but he sucks as a player. Just watch him tonight. Milloy is more of a force against the run than him and he is a safety. Right now, Keith Brooking is stealing $6 million a year from the Falcons. If I were him, I wouldn’t complain either.

Sometime before mid night tonight the Falcons will be 1-6 and counting. No offense, untested defense and no real star players. Deangelo Hall gets owned by talented receivers like Chad J, R Moss, and T.O. He gets glory by picking up a fumble that bounces into his arms and running it for a touch down untouched. He and the rest of the defensive backs can’t cover teams like New England and Indy. I can’t wait until Payton exploits our defense and beats the p**s out of Atlanta on Thanksgiving night. We suck!

The most believable part of this blog is the actual seperatists statements possessed by alot of educated individuals on both sides. It is an embarrassment coming from the african american side of this format to believe that those of us who actually are well educated strong members of our community who are still lost in the belief that someone eithers owes us something or needs to provide us something for free. We can look no further than the left wing media characterization of Katrina. Our community there was heavily dependent on the government for subsidized income and housing and look what that delivered in the end. Absolute evidence that we have become so dependent on others to provide a hand out that we have forgotten what it takes to be self sufficient. It is the same belief amongst our represented players on the Falcons. We view them as our superiors due to their roster presence but fail to critize them for lack of judgment and performance in their profession. Are we afraid that if we blindly support them through thick and thin that somehow this will affect what the white population’s perception is of our stereotype? Perhaps! The truth of the matter is that if we can ever come to the true belief that everyone’s status in life is directly controlled by their ability to demonstrate strong work ethic and professionalism the world would finally be equally balanced. Then and only then will we be able to fairly judge the merit of our society. Especially those representing our professional franchise the Atlanta Falcons. Show support!! Fill the Dome!!

How much you want to bet that everyone who said bad things about #56 is black? They cannot stand to see a man dominate the field like he does and be white at the same time. As the other blogger stated, the people who are in the nfl, coaches, players vote him into the pro bowl. Not the fans , people who play and know the game do it. Terrance you more as much as anyone have created these racial lines. Black people hate Brookings because he’s white, and they sure don’t want you writing about him.

With you always playing the race card, (not enough black coaches, QB’s, etc…) you have focused all this baloney into, all these idiots defending Michael Vick. Being white, you have to be a Larry Bird, before most African Americans (especially in Atlanta) will even considering to recognize you as a beneficial talent. I love reading all these idiots still defending the felon Juan Mexico.

Let me tell you Vick lovers, you’re not being held down by “the man”, it’s your ignorance. When you defending and justifying these losers in life and they’re behavior. Keep wearing your number 7 jersey, it’s a lot easier identifying idiots and losers who want the government to take care of them, instead of doing it your self. This way, I can easily avoid coming in contact with you.

Some idiot on here wants to compare Vick to the freaking Iraq war. When you make your role models the likes of Vick, OJ, Ray Lewis, Ricky Williams, goodness, I can go on and on, Instead of the likes of JC Watts, Tiger Woods, Colin Powell, Condy Rice, (soon to be Calvin Johnson) than you will remain being left behind. Crying for idiots like Vick who made more money in a week, than you will in your entire life is insane.

Mr. Moore, I’m surprised you didn’t mention that Mr. Brooking was a white LB in a league mostly made of black LB’s…I mean that’s a point you make when it’s a black QB, MLB player, head coach, etc…

It was nice to hear a flattering article come from you about a white player, too bad I could still count them all on one hand though.

Brooking is OVERRATED If you actually watched the games, he is always beat in man-to-man coverages, he is slow as molasses. I get tired of watching Brooking jump on top of the pile and be given credit for the tackle. We need a head hunter in the middle, someone who hits RB’s in the backfield. Arm tackles only work on the high school level.

“How much you want to bet that everyone who said bad things about #56 is black? They cannot stand to see a man dominate the field like he does and be white at the same time.”

That is the stupidest statement I’ve read in a while. I could counter that by saying “How much you want to bet that everyone who praises #56 is white”. Using blanket statements like that is just idiotic. Let’s just face facts. The guy is not as good as everyone says he is and is probably not as bad either. He is somewhere near the middle. However, with age, he is not getting any better. And as far as white players are concerned, every falcon fan I know, white or black, loved Scott Case. That that was one dirty, hard-hitting SOB and we loved him for it. Everybody was glad he left and got a ring with Dallas because he deserved it. If that ain’t showing love, I don’t know what is.

I don’t know if you write this crap because you hate yourself, or because you are just plain stupid. And to the venter who posted- Black people hate Brookings because he’s white, and they sure don’t want you writing about him.

No, I hate him because he sucks and makes all his tackles upfield. The reason he didn’t make the pro bowl last year is because the NFL realized it. Now if you put Brian Urlacher on this team you will see how many black people go out to support a white linebacker.

Ankle-tackles eight yards downfield simply doesn’t do it for me…Never forces a fumble (well, can’t since the runners don’t carry the ball with their ankles) or makes a truly ‘big’ play…

I have never seen a city and team so racially divided. The team is supplanted with racial issues that are totally unimportant for a fan.

What we need is a black coaching staff, all black players, all black city and county politicians, all black clubs, music and resturants —-and then we could watch the team and city sink into oblivion like East St. Louis. Of course, that doesn’t really matter as long as it’s all black.

Be real people….wonderful, super-nice, team first people don’t always make the best football players. I’ve never heard a scout put emphasis on a players’ “intelligence” or “character” over his forty time! So let’s get that out of the way. We all watch the NFL to see great players make great plays; not “nice” players make mediocre plays. If NFL teams really cared about “intelligence” and “character,” they would draft more players from ivy league schools. But instead, the owners and coaches continue to pull from Miami, USC, Michigan, Georgia…ect for their talent. Every now and then they get a great character guy with great skills (both black and white). (Ask yourself, why are acedemic admission standards lowered for college football players?) For both college and the NFL, as long as your so-called thugs lead to more wins and increased revenue, you have nothing to say. But when their not putting your team at the top of your charts, you have a problem with their “character” and behavior.

I’m tied of sorry football. I have been a fan every since the NFL let Mr. Smith buy in. I held season tickets for the first twenty years but finally, slow learner, decided I had seen enough bad football.

The Falcons have blamed the coach, owner, QB’s, Field Goal Kickers, and everyone but the TEAM. Football is a game of eleven players against eleven other players and it is supposed to be a TEAM effort. Our problem has always been only one or two Falcons show up for any one game. Blame the TEAM for playing sorry football. I will say I blame the coach for losing to Tennessee, instead of taking out Harrington he should have replace all the losers on the field, the other nine; that would have created some sparks. LOL!

I think Warren continues to do his best but most of the rest just dress out for show time but forget why they are on the stage. Give the TEAM credit for losing. Maybe Atlanta is appealing to loser players because they can hide while doing as little as possible like most of the other Falcons. They can continue changing management, QB’s, and other single identities but it isn’t going to change the outcome until the first TEAM starts playing 60 minutes every week.

Just my opinion!

We’re on our way to 1 and 5. Matt Schaub’s team is the only team we beat; guess Schaub couldn’t win in Atlanta. Your city has gotten just what it deserves. Good luck selling tickets to your games. Even Rush Limbaugh can see who was the best QB for Atlanta.

Sorry, I meant to say “two players who need more playing time”, not *receivers.

Dearest Debra,

No one is buying your the sheer stupidity of your “holier-than-thou*, self-righteous, unintelligent rambling.

Come on back to bed with me where you are appreciated, Sweet Debra, my most precious $lut.

Bring Vaseline.

Scorchingly yours,

S

p.s. Don’t worry about Vick. The sooner he is hung, the sooner he will be able to join us.

. Even Rush Limbaugh can see who was the best QB for Atlanta. You, of course, are referring to Chris Chandler.

Falcons are Losers?

How is it to be mentally inferior to EVERY OTHER race on a genetic level?

It takes a true idiot to believe that one may be genetically predisposed to intelligence. Maybe not a true idiot, but a Simple Redneck.

Falcons Believer, being capable of abstract thought is a sign of intelligence. Believe me, my neurons fire faster than yours, so do not get what little intelligence you have insulted. No one here worships Vick. We are merely reminding you of all your Vick bashing over the past few years. The Falcons are finally getting what the Atlantans asked for. You have your leader at QB; now go win some games:-)

Dear Falcons are Losers -

Sweetie, No intelligent person would HAVE TO tell the rest of the world how smart he/she is.

Just now, due to your obvoius insecurity and lack of intelligence, you HAD TO us all how smart you “THINK” you are.

Falcons are Losers, Sweetie, could you please get me some ketchup for my french fries? THANK YOU, DEAR.

You’re the best, “Einstein!” (giggle)

I seriously don’t understand why the AJC Sports editorialists continue to have jobs, especially terence “tom” moore. How in the world can he say that Brooking has been consistent with a straight face? I guess he means that Brooking is consistently mediocre. He is NOT an impact player. He is a hometown boy that made good. Nice guy but not a big time player. He has no sacks, no fumble recoveries, no interceptions, no game changing plays unless you count the big plays he gives up. Players like him is what makes Atlanta a consistent loser. Too many people around here love guys like Chipper Jones, Warrick Dunn, Keith Brooking, Jeff Francoeur and Jesse Tuggle who make Unite Way commercials and choke when its money time. When we have a chance to get impact players idiots like Moore, Schultz and too many Atlantans start with the “we don’t want players with attitudes”. Look at the Hawks, Mike Woodson is a good guy but he will never make the Hawks a winner. The one time the city brings a player with a will to win at all cost the fans want to run him out of town and I’m referring to Michael Vick. Now with the “consistent” Keith Brooking leading us we will finish with one of the worse records in football and draft a stiff like Brian Brohm or the quarterback out of Boston College, have a few losing seasons and the light will come on and we’ll realize he is a nice guy but not a big time winner then the cycle will start all over. All the while you will get hacks like moore, schultz and bradley fawning over what “a class act he is”. Who gives a f**k!!
