Tech must be Pro-Choice to win
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Miami — Winning didn’t lift Georgia Tech back among the nation’s elite, not that it has been there lately for long. What winning did was keep Tech from falling below .500 after seven games for the first time under this coach. What winning did was buy Chan Gailey time to right what has gone wrong with his latest curious team.
A loss here and the Jackets would have been 3-4, and their run of bowl appearances — since they can’t brag about beating Georgia or winning the ACC, the postseason streak has become their chief calling card — would have been in real jeopardy. A loss here and Gailey, never the people’s choice, would have begun to feel the big heat. A loss here …
Enough. Tech didn’t lose. It looked flimsy for a half and formidable when it mattered. It stopped outsmarting itself, and that was enough to beat an indifferent Miami team and maybe rescue what has been an indifferent season.
“I was thinking about all of that,” said linebacker Philip Wheeler, meaning the game at hand and its possible ramifications. And then: “There was nothing we could do about [losing at Maryland last week] until we played the next game. This was a big steppingstone.”
Perhaps it was. With Tech, it’s tough to know anything for sure. But this much was clear Saturday: The Jackets are good only when Tashard Choice gets the ball, and in this second half he got it 24 times.
The first half was one of those head-smackers. The Jackets had thrown 21 passes and had run the ball 17 times. The rationale for this incongruity was that Miami had the ACC’s second-worst pass-efficiency defense, but the reality was that the Jackets, who own the league’s second-worst passing offense, were staring at a 7-0 deficit because they’d played to their weakness.
“No question, sometimes you [overanalyze],” said John Bond, the offensive coordinator. “You think about what should look good and what could look good, but with the game on the line you’d better do what you do best.”
Just in time, Tech wised up. Choice, who’d rushed 13 times in the first half, carried on the first two snaps of the third quarter. And then, on the fourth, he ducked into the line and ducked out, and 54 yards later the game and maybe a season had turned.
“When it works, it works,” quarterback Taylor Bennett said. “If we can run the ball, run the ball. There’s no reason to pass if you can run.”
Tech hasn’t been the team it was supposed to be because it lacks the playmakers it was thought to have. It does, however, have a running back of surpassing skill. There’s no reason to get clever when Option A is a new Mercedes and Option B a rusted-out Pinto. Just run the doggone ball. Run it until somebody stops you. Run it even if they do.
Gailey said he whispered nothing in Bond’s ear at halftime: “They [his offensive coaches] saw what needed to be done.” If those coaches have a lick of collective sense, what was done in this second half is what should be done every half of every week.
Tech isn’t going to beat anyone of consequence on Bennett’s arm. Only Choice, who finished with 204 yards on 37 rushes, affords such a chance. There’s no reason the Jackets can’t gather themselves and win four or five more games and buy a trip to a better postseason game than the two that scouted this one — reps of the Emerald and Champs Sports bowls were on hand — if they remember how they beat Miami.
“Every week [the games] get bigger,” said Gailey, who was unusually festive afterward. (Feeling a reprieve, was he?) “The farther you go, the bigger they get.”
By winning here, the Jackets have given themselves a chance to play big games down the road. By winning here, this team has set the template for all its tomorrows. Can the frilly stuff. Be pro-Choice.

MB,
Two issues: 1. The Jackets can absolutely win on Bennett’s arm. They just can’t win while throwing to this group of receivers. How many drops was that? 8? 9?

OMG!! I’ve never seen so many dropped passes. This group of recievers HAS STEP UP. Is it Bennett’s throwing style or velocity that is causing these drops?? Something b/c the past 4 games have been nothing but drops on some darn good passes!!

Another 7-5 or 8-4 year. And we lose 3 games by a TD or less.
You get in the NFL playoffs with a 9-7 record. So you can play conservative: not to lose.
That doesn’t work in college ball. Worked today, didn’t the last two weeks.
We should be 6-1 but our game strategy has been mismanaged. I hope CG will realize this one day…

Choice is second best GT running back in the last 35 years behind only Eddie Lee.
Hollings might have been better until he got hurt and flunked out. Choice is better than Lavette was, I believe…

Mark: Good coverage and analysis. Executing “Pro-Choice” is certainly our best attack, but a one-dimensional offense is spelled with many letters “L” in the box score (especially against the teams of consequence you allude to.)
Let’s survive next week against Army - any Tech underdog is always a clear and present danger - and then see what this team (and coaches) are made of under the Thursday night big lights and national audience against VT.

good article Mark, i am however a little disappointed in some of the comments so far. and i noticed this after the game against Clemson. i have good, no great news Tech fans ,WE WON THE GAME. stop pounding our players and coaches into the ground after a win. it gets out of hand after a loss but thats expected, but this should not happen after a win. Yes, players dropped balls and maybe Gailey pulled out another nail biter to “buy himself some time”. i dont care about any of that after a win. we have some screws to tighten but all in all i am satisfied with the way we played. the defense came to play and that offensive live and MVP Mike Cox opened holes for Choice the entire second half. lets rest up and get ready for Army, forget about Va Tech. we should be worried about Army but until then lets enjoy the victory.
Go Jackets!!!

Ah Techster…there were MANY dropped passes. If someone wants to write that - they are perfectly allowed to do so. I can’t understand how these players are even on the field. Obviously, the ones on the sidelines are even worse. And about Army…. lol…they got drilled by Central Michigan today. If we have to ‘worry’ about them - we truely stink!

No one said anything about it, and I don’t have replay, but I really thought the taylor bennett interception was pass interference. I thought the guy was holding the reciever’s arm down. I don’t know if you can challenge that, but they could have at least raised some cane. I agree to that there were alot of dropped passes, but that is one of the problems with gailey is he doesn’t command respect from players and they play like he coaches-about 75%

Good game Tech. I like this offensive scheme. Yes the run is working but Bennet hit on some key third down conversions in the second half. It was good to see Earls and D.J. Donley out there. Establish the run first yes but then the bootlegs worked well with Bennett and some rollout play-action may work in the future. Tech needs to be balanced to beat a team that can stuff the run. However, there is no question we have something here in the run game. The defense also played well not getting out of the gate poorly like the last few games it seems. Bennett and Nesbitt looked good at times and both will get better each week. Cox had an excellent game too.

The fact that Choice is absolutely critical to Tech’s offensive success is no newfound revelation. This was the case last season, as well, when we had an excellent receiver and a subpar qb. Now, we have an average qb and receivers who need LOTS of development. Tech’s offense this season has been the achilles’ heel (along with Chan, of course, but that’s a given). The defense has been solid, allowing opponents to average only 16.3 ppg (13th in the league). Opponents will score points - that’s inevitable - but the offense must be able to score more points than the opponents!
Given that we are in the midst of another season of wasted opportunities due to an incompetent coach, I was very nonchalant about today’s game. However, at the end (Heaven forbid Tech to have a blowout performance against a quality team where the outcome has been determined long before the final play; Saint Chan must always keep games close and allow opponents the opportunity to win.) I was elated Tech won.
Go Jackets!!!

There were some dropped passes, but too many of Taylor’s passes were high, low, or wide. If his accuracy doesn’t improve, Chan has to make a switch - but that is one thing a pro coach rarely does, pull the starter.

Some obvious comments:
Chan is a good coach but not a great game day coach. Bear Bryant commented about this often in comparing himself to Bobby Dodd, one of the best “game day” coaches in history.
Had GT run the play Bennett scored on for his second TD on any of the last four plays against MD, GT would have won. Maybe Bond is having a good influence on Gailey.
Tech misses CJ… duh! I can’t blame CJ for turning pro but GT would be 6-1 with him. Thomas, Smith, Donnely and Earls will be good receivers but they aren’t there yet.
Bennett is NOT a great QB and never will be. That being said, he seldom makes mistakes (his int. vs. Miami looked for all the world like a completion to Smith.) His completion to Thomas on 3rd and ten WAS the big play of the game. His two runs for TD’s got us our points. Just don’t ask him to do what he isn’t capabe of doing. He sure misses CJ!
Tech’s defense has been inconsistent. It’s been magnificent—- ND, Clemson, Miami—- and otherwise inconsistent (Samford doesn’t count.) “D” will be the key to the rest of the season.

Bradley, who are you to question the skills of the Tech coaches? “If they have a lick of sense?”, You may be a great “armchair” field general, but keep your critisism of this team and it’s staff to yourself. This team is going to give your precious bulldogs all they want and more, and the coaches are not going to be following your advice.
Great job jackets. Well done to Gailey and his staff.

Dear Stan Nolte
Lenny Snow, Eddie Lee Ivery (Sr.),Jerry Mays and Brent Cunningham might argue with you on best running back status. Tashard is good, but best?
About dropped passes…does anyone think Bennett often throws a very “uncatchable” pass? Wrong shoulder, low, too hot to handle, one hopper. He has some funky mechanics. He is getting better with each outing I think, but has a long way to go. Hopefully he is getting the right instruction at practice.

I love the way Choice runs the ball, but I love more the way Mike Cox blocks for him … when a tailback gets that many yards, I think they should be shared with the fullback. My favorite Tech running back and I have seen all the ones mentioned was Brent Cunningham … ever try to catch a butterfly with two fingers … that’s what it was like to catch him. GO JACKETS!

Chan Gailey isn’t the best college coach I’ve ever seen, but he’s far from the worst. (Tommy Bowden, you should know, is among the worst.) And I wouldn’t be too quick to give up on this team. The Jackets could win four of the next five. Heck, they could win all five. Virginia Tech is beatable, and Georgia doesn’t look all that dominant, either. Does that mean I’d pick Tech over Georgia? Uh, no. I made up my mind after last season — when I picked Tech to win not once, not twice, but three times — never to take the Jackets over Georgia until they actually prove they can win that game. And one last thing: It’s my theory — unproven but deeply felt — that shaky quarterbacks have more of their passes dropped than do the established ones. I think receivers catch the ball better when they’re confident the ball that arrives will indeed be catchable. If that makes any sense.

Taking stock. 4-3 record. 5 games remain. We should be favored in 3 of 5. The other two are home games against teams that are not (or will not be) prohibitive favorites. Va Tech stumbled out of the gate with close games against ECU and UNC and a big loss at LSU. However, they are looking tougher as the season goes along. UGA is 5-2, but they are about to hit a very tough stretch with games against UF, UK, and Auburn. Tech should finish no worse than 7-5. Pull off a win against VT and/or UGA, and it’s still a pretty good year (yes, it should have been much better).
Regarding Tashard, yes he is a very talented running back. Where he will rank in the pantheon of the best backs in Tech history once his career is over, remains to be seen. As far as pure running ability, I’ve yet to see one measure up to Eddie Lee Ivery. Robert Lavette, Tony Hollings, Brent Cunningham, Lenny Snow, William Bell, and Jerry Mays had some great years (or potential ones).
Here’s the key, yes…definitely take advantage of Tashard Choice. Run him as long as the other team’s defense can’t stop him. Unfortunately, against a good defense, they WILL load the box and stop Choice if we can’t prove that we can move the ball otherwise. Doubtful that Army or Duke will have the horses to do it. However, you can count on the fact that the DC’s for VT, UNC, and UGA already have schemes to force the game into Taylor Bennett’s hands. Bond (er….Gailey) better start now devising a scheme to come out with some deception and innovation to take advantage of those “load the box” schemes early and adjust to running the ball with Choice once we loosen them up. Anyone heard of misdirection or (heaven forbid) a halfback option?

Good response Mark. I’m a firm believer in the “prove it” theory of a team that has shown a losing history in big games or against a particular opponent. Tech simply hasn’t shown that they can (or to borrow Pat Dye’s line, that they are “man enough”) to beat UGA under Gailey. No one with any sense should pick them until they prove that they can.

Choice is a horse but I wouldn’t just put him above some of the other TECH backs of days gone by. I started keeping up with TECH in 1970 and since that time the King Bee is Eddie Lee Ivery. ELI had it all. It wasn’t an accident he was the 16th or 17th player picked in the draft. Eddie Lee may be the only player at TECH to ever have TD’s from running, receiving, punt returns, kick returns, and throw a TD. A couple of other guys that were really good were Robert Lavette and Jerry Mays. Much like Choice they lacked that break away speed but they were very patient, knew how to use their blocks, would run through a tackle, could make people miss, and always landed going forward. Plus Lavette played 4 years for teams that won a total of 16 games and Mays spent his junior year playing while recovering from major knee surgery on a team that won 3 games. I always liked William Bell’s physical style of running and his backfield mate, Dorsey Levens, had a really good senior year (7+ ypc) after being banged up his junior year. Then of course there was Tony Hollings who had that speed that none of the rest really had. We just never see that kind of speed in a back at TECH. But right now Choice is our man and he’s a lot fun to watch and is an inspiration to his team. Bradley is wrong though if he thinks any team in college football today can simply line up week after week and run the ball down people’s throats. Even Vince Dooley wouldn’t try that, the defensive athletes are too good. You can run a guy 30 times but you better have something to go with him.

Also wanted to point out something I have noticed while listening to both the Tech and UGA radio broadcast. Mr. Bradley’s commentary on Tashard Choice by no means overstated the effort that was manifisted in the stats of his super “individual” performance. I am incredulous, however, that the enormous and selfless contribution of fullback Mike Cox on virtually every one of these 37 carries could go unmentioned in his column. If there ever was a “co-MVP” effort deserving of at least a drop of ink, this was it. We don’t get the final edition of the AJC down here in Macon. However, the edition we get had very extensive coverage of the game story, columns, game notes and stats. Not once does Cox’s name appear - not even in the individual game stats list - simply because he did not have one touch on offense. I’m not sure even his coaches and teamates will appreciate the enormity of his contribution until they see the game film. How ‘bout a little love from the media for this war-horse?

Seems like under Gailey, we only play one half of football - never two. And, this has been going on for years. What does it take to play a full game? BC - one half. Virginia - one half. Maryland - one half. Miami - one half. ND and Samford don’t count and Clemson is a toss-up. We played good but they didn’t play up to their potential. If you look at previous years, the same thing. Can he not motivate this tema to play at 110% for 2 halves???

I agree with Richard. Tech can win on Bennett’s arm because he dosen’t give the ball up in critical situations. He does make enough completions to keep a defense honest. Thats all he has to do. The TV announcers were ecstatic about Cox yesterday and even emphasied Cox’s performance over Choice. This is fine with me because Cox will be an excellent NFL prospect, perhaps as tight end.

Mr. T - First of all, you should not be correcting anyone else’s spelling when your own grammar is so poor. (I counted seven errors.) Second, you obviously did not pay enough attention to the Georgia broadcast to hear the same commercials being played on both broadcasts. Please don’t suggest Tech grads are running the world while Georgia grads are all working in the mail room.
I actually wanted to congratulate Tech on some good wins. Choice is clearly a stud running back, and it will be a great game come November. I am hopeful someone in your conference beats BC though. Are they seriously the second best team in the country?

Speaking of broadcasts, I tried listening to the UGA broadcast yesterday. It was so bad that I couldn’t stomach it.
When Munson was doing the broadcasts and referring to the team as “we” and “us”, it was natural and okay because he came from that generation of “homer” announcers (e.g., John Ward for Tennessee, Al Ciraldo for Tech, etc.). Unfortunately, the two clowns that were doing the UGA broadcast yesterday acting like “homers” was just sad. It’s time to move the broadcast into the 21st century with some professionalism and some objectivity in the booth. At least refer to the team as “Georgia” or “the Dawgs,” instead of “we” or “us.”

Simply put, Mark, you are right when you say that Chan is not one of the worst coaches in college football. To be one of the worst, you would have to recruit poorly, hire bad assistants, not be able to teach fundamentals, and not be able to motivate on gameday. I will give Chan the first 2, but he does not teach quarterbacks very well (or put them in positions to succeed). Passing on first down more often would make Taylor look much better. Also, I agree with the blogger who stated that we never seem to play 2 great halves on gameday, usually we don’t show up in the 2nd half offensively, but this past week, it was the opposite.
Either way, GT can do better than Chan. His pro style of playing for field goals and running the ball continually when everyone knows we are going to run the ball will continue to make our offense one of the worst in the nation!!
Chan must go!!!

Inconsistency is the Theme of the Gailey era - and he says he doesn’t know WHY - which means for a coach who has been there as long as he has it is UNACCEPTABLE!!!
The players like to play for Gailey - but they also are INCONSISTENT.
Bennett - while not making many big mistakes - throws too many passes into the ground and TOO HIGH (I agree that receivers need to have better hands but some of the passes they got their hands on were still too HIGH)
Offensive Line - Doesn’t step up as much as they should with their experience. We shoule neasily make 1 yards every time we need to.
Defense - Many have already said it. Tenuta’s defense gives up too many big plays. The Miami touchdown on 4th down. The missed tackle on the fake punt. Number 7 on defense is a liability and should not be playing!!
Radakovich has said that with the changes to ticket prices people should expect more - we do - we have yet to see it!!!

As far as I’m concered……Gaileys job rides on beating Ugag this Nov. if he can’t do that….he’s not worth the money we pay him and thus he’s simply gotta go.
IF he’s such a great coach…..he can find a way to get his troops completely prepared to win that game and make the right calls when need be.

7-5 or 8-4 is not that great in the ACC with a 12 game schedule AND the state of Georgia as our recruiting base.
If we were in Mississippi or Arkansas then that’s another story.
CG has got to step it up from 4, 7-5/6 seasons and a 9-5 season last year. We really should be winning 9 games most years and beating UGAy at least every third year, IMO…
