Throwing punchlines at Holyfield

Jeff Schultz

The Tuesday Countdown:

10: Bobby Petrino put out another fire Monday. Great. Only 11 weeks of fires to go.

9: Went to Philips Arena Friday and saw the Thrashers lose their opener. Went to Knoxville Saturday and saw the Bulldogs lose to the Vols. Went to Nashville Sunday and saw the Falcons lose to the Titans. Thinking of going to Las Vegas to lease my services as “The Cooler.”

8: Wonder if that would improve my chances with Maria Bello? I mean, if she falls for a schlep like “Bernie Lootz” …

7: Hate to step on the musical blogging toes of our Notorious DOB (Dave O’Brien), but: Rented a car for the trip that had satellite radio. Found station 10, “E Street Radio,” which for any Springsteen fan is nirvana. Also drove off I-75 when they played a bootleg of an old Bruce concert in some small New Jersey club, during which he said, “This is something new,” and he proceeded to play a still-raw version of “Jungleland.” Soooo much better than “Rocky Top.”

6: No Yankees, no Mets, no Dodgers, no Cubs, no Phillies, no Angels and certainly no Braves. If you think baseball and network executives are depressed now, what happens when the World Series ends up being Indians-Diamondbacks?

5: More evidence it’s not all about payroll: The Yankees had a majors-leading payroll of $190 million. Actually, the Red Sox are the only team among the top 22 payolls to make it to baseball’s final four. Cleveland ranked 23rd in payroll, Colorado 25th, Arizona 26th.

4: There’s a rumor going around that Evander Holyfield is fighting for a title this weekend. Naaaaaaah.

3: Really, I wish Holyfield no ill-will. But it speaks to the insignificance of this “WBO” title fight when nobody can name the champion (Sultan Ibragimov), the fight is being held in Moscow, the starting time in the Eastern time zone will be 1 p.m. on a college football Saturday, pay-per-view receipts will be few and his financial guarantee is even less. Does this sound like a heavyweight title fight?

2: As much as Joey Harrington probably will never win over a segment of the Falcons’ fanbase, Petrino made the right call in not making a change at starter yet. But if Byron Leftwich doesn’t get a significant share of snaps with the No. 1 offense in practice this weeks, sit in the first 10 rows at your own risk.

1: Nike announced it will not try to recoup millions in endorsement fees from disgraced gold medalist Marion Jones. But the Falcons have asked her for $22 million.

Jeff,

Did you wake up, look over, and see Martha Burke again? Come on, Jeff, even though you’re a follower and supporter, you’ll never convert her to men!

Why did I read this?

Evander Holyfield is about to be a 5 time Heavyweight champ. Since the dogs and tech are both out of it, I will be watching the fight on my FPV (Free Per View) Box. Joe

Larry, that I is “funny” isn’t? Just another case of racism, and you pointed it out for us. You’re brilliant!

Heavyweight boxing never survived the scam the sport played on all of us with that tyson thug who punched out his girlfriend.

who has watched another match since he was exposed as a glass jaw? boxing is fixed, and that phony proved it. he couldn’t fight, it was all dives by bums.

Uhhh Indians vs. Diamondbacks? I don’t think so. Colorado Rockies all the way! 10 and 8 record vs the D-backs. So there. Watch and see.

Holyfield is so desperate for cash he’s doing Zaxby’s commercials. I wouldn’t doubt if we see him at Wild Bills or Cowboys soon.

I was sceptical of Holyfields chances till the past couple of fights hes been in. I think he has a great shot as being champ again. Go Holyfield!

At last count the Holyfield mating process with 24 females had produced 73 offspring.

This is why he continues to fight!

Jeff,

GREAT tie-in to “The Cooler;” I’m thinking you and I may be the only ones to have seen that movie. This fall it appears I’ll be watching more films and less dawgs on Saturdays.

Evander keep on doing what you are doing, and the racist bloggers who hate on you will continue to demean you just as they do every other black athelete in this racist a* city!

Holyfield is 45 years old! What is he thinking? I am older than that and want to cheer the old guys in sports, but there is a time to give it up before getting brain damage.

Jeff Schultz needs to be stopped. He is the most negative sports writer alive. Sports should make you happy, distract you from life’s everyday problems. I think you have surpassed MArk Bradley as my least favorite AJC writer.

No body to watch in the Heavyweight Division besides Evander that does not look like a slob/blob. At least he stays in some shape. I guess some of the foreign fighters that you cannot pronounce their names are ok but, there`s nobody in that division worth watching. The lower ranks are ok and competitive and entertaining but we really need some heavyweights. How I long for Ali/Frazier, Evander/Tyson and even Big George, Norton, and those couple of White guys who could go pretty well. Until we get some more GOOD big fighters, Evander can keep trying to carry the load.

Gimme a break people! You find more than 3 positive things in athletics these days that matter to more than a handful of fans. This is one of the worst times in American history to be a sports fan.

David, get a life. Race isn’t an excuse for everything. Just because someone doesn’t like someone doesn’t mean they are a racist. I don’t like plenty of people that are members of my race. Just like the Stones and Aerosmith, Holyfield needs to give it up.
I’m so sick of this city and it’s “everyone is a racist” view. You are part of the problem in creating this neverending race issue. You want to have racial harmony but yet you try and divide people. It sounds like you are a segregationist. Separate but equal, huh? I don’t believe that’s what the civil rights movement was about. I decide if I like someone based on their actions and intelligence level, not what color their skin is. Wake up Atlanta.

What do Holyfield and Trent Green have in common — They are both one hit away from hiring Tommie Hearns as a speech coach.

Why? The big why.

Why does Petrino get to demand Alge show up at his door to take care of issues outside of the media spotlight, yet he felt obliged to call out Harrington for not throwing the ball fast enough after week 2.

Oh, yeah, he’s the boss who figures the humane rules of respect don’t apply to him. While everyone takes a certain amount of flak from the boss, it seems like the team captains have figured out that Petrino doesn’t respect the players at all.

David; YOU are the racist, brotha! We white folk “hate on” every other black athlete in this racist city? You make it VERY easy to prove you and your child-like accusations to be false. Warrick Dunn, Jesse Tuggle, Domonique Wilkins are all revered in this town…and yes by whitey as well. YOU are the type of person that hurts your own cause by making race issues out of NON race issues. Then, when a REAL race issue comes up…nobody gives a damn because idiots like YOU, David, have screamed “it’s whitey’s fault” one too many times. Get a life; your mule and ten acres should be coming to you any day now. In the mean time, enjoy spending the money that I pay in taxes, because I’m sure you are an unemployed bigot who, although he hates whitey and blames him for everything, is MORE than open to taking his hard earned tax dollars. Enjoy your spinners and Colt 45.

Holyfield can’t stop fighting, Jeff. He has to feed his kids. He’s on the Baby Mama Fertilization Plan. They have meetings. Shawn Kemp is the President (and also the founding member). Travis Henry is a member. Chipper Jones is a junior member of the club.

Oh, and Jeff, if you like you some Mara Bello (the hottest 40 year old on the face of the planet), you really need to check out A History of Violence

You’ll never just walk up a flight of stairs again.

I would like to ask Nikki why they aren’t going after the money from Maion Jones for the millions. She did wrong just like Michael Vick. Wrong is wrong and if they don’t go after her, then I will form a protest against buying any more Nikki symbol of anything. Treat everyone the same. GO AFTER THE MILLIONS FROM HER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If by Nikki, you mean Nike, they didn’t take any money back from Michael Vick either, they can’t. The Falcons are the ones trying to get some of their money back because it was bonus money paid to him for future performance. Since he won’t be playing, there won’t be any future performance. Nike just ended their contract Vick. So Nike wouldn’t be able to take back any money from Marion because she fulfilled her obligations to the terms of her contract at that time.

I left Atlanta in March of last year. I thought that racism was just a part of life everywhere. Not true. People treat each other better here than back in Georgia. Everyone is a victim in the south. And I do mean EVERYONE! Don’t single that comment out and call me a racist too. I personally couldn’t care less what happens to you, whatever color you are. If you hid behind the shroud of racism, you are a loser. Plain and simple. As for the article, good stuff. I remember when Holyfield fought a 40-something George Forman. People were pulling for him. It would be great for the sport if Evander could unify the belts and than retire on top. The boxing federations would have to determine a system for boxers to obtain the belts. As for the Falcons, WOW! I feel bad for the players there now. They were put in a system that is unique. Specially made for a quarterback that can run but can’t throw deep. You go to a quarterback that can’t run but can go deep, where is your identity? This season and probably next is a wash. Petrino seems to be a good fit. He needs a couple of drafts under his belt before we can kick him out. The Braves will be just fine. Parody is king in sports now. And just thought I would throw it in, I would like Maria Bello for Christmas. Thanks Santa!

What is with you chumps and lusting over stuff (women) you can not have? Angie Harmon, J-Lo and Halle Barry are knocked up and having babies for their men, not you!!! Maria Bello would barf if your dandruff ridden troll a* sme anywhere near her vicinity. Jeff Schultz, you’re not “The Cooler,” you’re the f’in JINX!!! Anything you think about related to Atlanta sports is doomed to failure… You better be happy some hag actually married your weak a**…

Some of you are so pathetic… I personally don’t like the guy, but there was nothing racist about what Schultz said. It’s you brothers that keep the racism sh!t alive in Blacklanta. You and your people move here in masses and slum up the city, always leaving a path of destruction in your wake, then you have the balls to blame the white man for all your problems. Grow up and get a clue. If you don’t like it here, pack up your Escalade and move!!
