Dogs can’t graduate, can beat Vols

Jeff Schultz

Before unveiling this week’s absolute financial locks — not to be confused with going 7-15-1 against the spread the past two weeks, which I like to view as an abbreviated but horrible scare, sort of like Newt Gingrich in the White House — we have this update from the fascinating world of Georgia education:

Man, are we dumm.

Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution in 1788, but fell to 19th in the rankings a week later when somebody noticed we spelled Constitution with three “o’s” and a “k.”

This of course set the tone for low SAT scores, Prof. Jim Harrick Jr. and this week’s big news: Georgia ranks last in the SEC in football graduation rates. Tech is last in the ACC. But that’s not too surprising considering I think Dave Braine once said the school mandates that all left tackles must be able to split an atom by their sophomore year, sometimes blindfolded. Otherwise, no diploma for you!

But this was crushing news for the Bulldogs. They graduated only 41 percent of their players from 1997 to 2000, far behind Vanderbilt (91), Florida (72) and even Alabama (49), although there seems to be some debate as to whether Alabama ever actually ratified the Constitution.

Georgia fans will not blame Mark Richt. He didn’t get here until 2001 and, besides, like, he’s winning. The Dogs are 3-0 since losing to South Carolina.

Their next opponent, Tennessee, allowed 104 points and some major organs in losses to California and Florida. That has put a strain on coach Phil Fulmer, who at least is standing firm at 52 percent (graduation rates and body fat).

Maybe I’ve lived here too long, but am I reading this wrong: Tennessee by 2? Follow the smart money. Dogs win (but take the gift points).

Study Hall

(Yeah, right)

Sybil at Maryland: The Jackets lost to Virginia, then beat up Clemson, which I think is sort of like conquering Germany but falling to Luxembourg. Tech’s offense ranks first in rushing, last in passing, which I guess means Taylor Bennett throws for three touchdowns. Duh. Tech covers 3.

Florida at LSU: The Gators warmed up for their biggest game of the year by struggling with Mississippi, losing to Auburn and seeing defensive captain Tony Joiner get arrested for allegedly breaking into an impound lot to reclaim his girlfriend’s car. That makes eight arrests in nine months. Wonder if they’re stealing test scores? LSU wins, but take Florida and 9.

Vanderbilt at Auburn: There’s an Internet rumor that Bobby Petrino may be headed for Auburn after the Falcons’ season. Now, come on, of all the farfetched scenarios, do you really think school officials and Bobby Lowder would go behind Tommy Tuberville’s back, fly to a secret location and meet with Petrino, who … wait, let me start over. Tigers cover 7 1/2.

Houston at Alabama: Nick Saban has lost two straight. The last ‘Bama coach to do that got fired. Hey, just saying. Houston lost to East Carolina? Check! Tide covers 10 1/2. • Virginia Tech at Clemson: Since getting whacked by LSU (48-7), the Hokies have won three straight over Ohio, William and Mary and North Carolina, which would matter if that wasn’t the new standard in Blacksburg. The Tigers rebound well from humiliations: the 5 1/2 is covered.

Pros and Ex-Cons

Falcons at Titans: In the past two games, Joey Harrington has completed 74 percent of his passes for 584 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, so captivating Falcons fans that he was booed last week and all anybody wants to know is who’s going to win the Michael Vick arbitration hearing. Must feel good to get on the road. Titans win. But take the Falcons and 8 1/2.

Panthers at Saints: Things are so bad in Carolina that the team held a players-only meeting. I had a meeting once. Still couldn’t play football. Saints finally win one and cover three.

Browns at Patriots: Does Cleveland get an appearance fee for this, you know, like FIU at Penn State? Meet the exception to the NFL two-touchdown rule: The 16 is covered.

Chargers at Broncos: Philip Rivers has nine turnovers. The Chargers rank 26th in total offense. So much for Norv Turner’s strengths. Denver covers 1 1/2.

Bucs at Colts: Tampa has lost Carnell Williams, which means there’s a pretty good chance Jeff Garcia is going to start looking a lot more like a third option (or Jeff Garcia). Indy covers 10.

Great column as usual. It is one of my favorite parts of every football season.

Anyone who booed Harrington last week is an idiot, plain and simple. Probably the same people who thought this team was going anywhere with Vick as the QB.

El Jeffe’,

Taylor may not throw 3 touchdowns for the rest of the year. If Tech stays within 4, Gailey will be on the headphones telling Bond to “stay conservative.” Maryland won’t be in the gift giving mood like Clemson was. The Fridge flattens Tech. Take the Terps and the points.

The boys in Sin City that set the lines are smoking rope. The Dawgs are getting points against the famous rocket scientist Werner Von Fulmer and his orange astronauts? Take the puppies, the points, and laugh your way to the bank.

LSU’s for real, Florida whizzed away their season last week. It’s Baton Rouge baby. Take the Tigers and lay the points.

Shouldnt we be more concerned about Florida’s extraordinarily high graduation rates? 100% in basketball? Come on!! Are they taking any classes? Seems to me that UGA is treating players like students and actually failing those that can’t pass their exams.

People have had a lot to say about which Dawg team will show up to play, I’m a lot more concerned which type of coaching philosophy will show up. I wouldn’t know what to do if CMR said that he was going to ask the team to win(just kidding). That’s why I’m going to really enjoy this one. Now will Ky completely choke or will they come from behind and win. This would be the “Game of the Week”! SOS having a 14 pt. lead at home and losing? I doubt it.

I’m with you rw. If I were the NCAA I would be look into programs like UGA and say “why are you not graduating enough?” and programs like UF and say “why is EVERYONE graduating?” Don’t mean to sound like sour grapes but it seems a little fishy. Also, why in the heck can they not come out with grad rates that are more current? It doesn’t seem fair to come out with headlines about grad rates from 7-10 years ago. Headline should read “Coach Donnan’s players have poor graduation rates!” No one would buy that paper though would they AJ-FREAKIN-C. I’m sure they just want to distract from the positives that CMR has brought to this program. Go DAWGS!

Wildcats meet reality. They’re a good football team but not ready for prime time yet. Unfortunately for them and the SEC the coaches poll will probably drop them behind teams they should be in front of. Good game SC. Remember, you made a deal with the devil. Feels good now but sooner or later it’ll catch up to you.

DWG, You read my mind. Kentucky losing like they did tonight is more proof that the polls are complete garbage and voters simply don’t watch all the games they are supposed to. Who did they beat? A 1 dimensional Arkansas team with a bad D and a HORRIBLE Louisville team? #8? Give me a break. That being said, they may still get a win over UF, UF, or UGA but come on.

By DWG

October 5, 2007 12:42 AM | Link to this

UGA, UK and USC are all good teams. Not great but will give ANY team a good fight on any given day. That being said, there’s a lot of football to be played and we’ll see how big this win is later on in the season. UK got there first test tonight and got exposed a little. Just like the UGA teams in the 90’s that would beat inferior opponents and then get our back sides handed to us by UT. I think the SEC east winner could have 2 conf. losses this year. This happens when you play in a competitve league like the SEC.

Yes Jeff, Georgia fans will not blame Richt because we’re winning. I on the other hand think he should have been doing something about our graduation rate while taking care of the offensive coordinator duties at FSU.

Jeff, I ususally like your column but this is a stupid statement meant to rile us up. You seem to be hell bent on getting UGA fans ticked off with this column. Maybe to deflect all of the hate mail you’ll get from Vol fans for picking the dawgs. You shouldn’t take that side just to sell papers. It’s just the AJC for god sake. Woodson, did not look like and All-American to me, poor decision making. Ideal example of how the position SHOULD NOT be played.

Havercamp, did not practice this week, Vance will be the number 1, sub. Would be great if there were more guys ready too play on the OL.

Game will be determined by Stafford’s decision making ability. At this point not sure if Stafford is comparable to Greene, in his RS Freshman year. Stafford has the cannon-that does not win games.

Pat Dye, expressed concern about playing freshmen on the OL. These guys have made tremendous progress, my concern will they “wear down”, physically and mentally over the last half of the year. These guys are 18/19, and were not given time to develop physically mentally.

Jeff, The graduation data you stole from USA Today is not about the graduates from 1997 to 2000, but for the classes entering school during those years. Those student/athletes would have typically graduated from ‘01 to ‘04, therefore, Richt is involved. Take special note to Florida basketball that had a 100% graduation rate during that time span, and Maryland basketball had 0%.

Not so fast my friend. I didn’t think I would see the day where the Georgia/Tenn. game is the third tier SEC showdown behind LSU/Fla and Kentucky/SC this week. Playing at Tenn. will be tough for the young Dawgs. They will grow up a little but not enough to win. Hillary will be a 6 point favorite going into the election but Rudy pulls the upset based on an injury to her throwing hand while she’s trying to stick it to us.

All University’s give their student athlete’s the opportunity to get a degree. All of them must maintain good grades to play. The fact that they leave early for the NFL, or play their 4 or 5 years and never graduate should not be a “negative” on the school. It should be a negative on the student or maybe their parents for not pushing their son to get a degree.

Taylor Bennett is a good quarterback. He gives Tech the unusual look of a left handed passer and he has thrown the ball to many different receivers. He also has thrown the ball over the middle. The fact that he can throw to the entire field has forced defenses to play balanced and has opened up the running game.

He has started 6 games and has won 4. Games won include Conn., Notre Dame, Samford, and Clemson. Losses to Boston College and Virginia. Last time I looked BC was undefeated and Virginia after losing their first game is also undefeated.

Games at the level Tech plays at are often lost by the team that makes the most mistakes.

By mistakes, I mean penalties that stop a drive or take a team out of scoring position. Interceptions and fumbles that give the other team the ball and field position. (Check the Virginia game.)

The same is true on the defensive side of the ball. Roughing the punter or passer is a big deal and can cost the game. Blow pass coverage and the other team has a touchdown.

Putting a freshman QB into the game increases the risk of a mistake that will cost the game.

Chan and his staff want to help their team win games. And, it is a team game. Any guy on the team can cost the game but only working as a team will they win.

Get off Taylor’s back and start supporting him and the team. He is a smart guy with a strong and accurate arm and he has only made a couple of mistakes. He did not cost us the game at Virgina or Boston College.

UGA is nothing more than and Minor League/Single A farm team for some mediocre professional football teams. No one can name one decent QB to play pro from UGA except for Fran The Man Tarkenton, who proved he would not win the big one either.

UGA continues to grind out players year after year, that cannot read or write and are part of a program that has not won a national title in 27 years, which is the only national title to their name.

The least UGA could do is produce some academic athletes who contribute to society. Brining up the rear in academics in the SEC is pathetic. Everyone knows the SEC brings up the rear on academics as compared to all conferences, and to be last in the SEC is saying “we are the worst of the worst.”

The UGA program is pathetic in so many ways and the football needs to be scrubbed and replaced with women’s soccer, maybe they could win a national title and some students could actually graduate.

UT vs. UGA

UT 35 UGA 21 Stafford goes 12 for 28 with 121 yards, and 3 interceptions. Dogs defense gets hammered by Ainge and the UT defense stuffs them in Knoxville.

Hmmmm…looks like South Carolina is ranked higher than the Dogs and Spurrier still owns you….what else is new. Spurrier is improving his program while the UGA program is going down the crapper. Well, maybe all those Dawg fans can get a refund.

I love the UGA ticket office, they are laughing all the way to the bank with their booster fees and cost for season tickets. What a waste.

Schultz— You are a MORON. A coaching/athletic staff can only do 3 things— recruit quality players, encourage them to attend class and study hard, and arrange for tutoring when needed. It’s then up to the student-athlete to do want it takes to make the grades and progress toward graduation. Blame the players themselves, not the coaches you idiot.

ALL YOU READERS KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS, DON’T YOU! YES, THE “SCHULTZ PICK INVERSION” RULE GOES INTO EFFECT! SPI! SPI! SPI! FALCONS WIN! FALCONS WIN! FALCONS WIN! Thanks Jeff. Keep up the good work.

Dawgs have the best traditien of any football team in the country. We have won six national football champieonships and many SEC chapieonships. We have the best players from the best high school football programs in the counry (I know, I played in Cobb Co. before I blew out my knee - I would have been a Dawg). We own the SEC and will easily win out this year. We didn’t really lose to USC, we gave them the game - and we should still be ranked higher becasue of our incredible tradetion, stadium and facilitees - GO DAWGS

The comments section for these AJC sports stories are hilarious — talk about taking *hit too seriously! Jeff, thanks for the picks and the Newt comment, if for no other reason than it stirred the right-wing moron hornets’ nest. I’m a Georgia native and still love my Dawgs, Braves, Falcons, etc., but any state where a high percentage of people think Newt Gingrich would make a fabulous president is a state with some serious problems. On one side you’ve got the defend-Michael-Vick-no-matter-what loonies, on the other the hardcore Republican nuts. 10 years ago I decided to get the hell out of GA and head out west as soon as I graduated UGA (a fine institution of higher learning, by the way), and the decision looks better and better each day. Falcons lose a close one on Sunday. Dawgs kill Vols.

Hey MariettaDawg:

Thanks for galvanizing the fact that you are a redneck UGA fan, who has not guts to admit your program is in the tank and not coming out anytime too soon.

My previous comment was not an opinion, but fact, thus the reason you got so rabid with your undefended comment about your program, which is average at best.

CMR will be gone in 5 or less, when Shannon gets fired from UM. Who the hell wants to work in Dixieland Athens, when he can return to his roots in a more diverse atmosphere (UM) and welomes everyone.

Back to the single-wide for you, mama is calling and needs you.

This is not football but * TBS has done a great job with the MLB Play-offs. Much better than FOX, ESPN, and other networks. Great job by all Sports Broadcasters, no favorites. Thanks TBS. Boy, it would be great to see the Braves play the way D-Backs and Rockies have. Fun to watch..The Braves are dead with Cox. Go Dogs and Jackets.*

Why can’t we just root for the Dawgs or whoever you like and relax a little. Jeff…they don’t pay you enough to take this kind of abuse from such a group of uneducated bigots. God bless you brother. Dude,Pepino are you telling us everyone who played at VA TECH graduated with a degree in engineering?

If you believe that you are dumber than VICK.

Just because VA TECH is an engineering school does not mean you have to take engineering classes.

I bet you $100 that Vick probably never went to class the 2 years here was there.

Quit drinking the kool aid, if you noticed you are the only one that thinks VICK is brilliant!

The only people who care about the graduation rates of college teams they adore are the people who ACTUALLY WENT to the school. To those individuals the perception of the school across the country matters because they will justifiably realize their academic achievements are devalued if people think they went to a “joke” institution.

This is one of the reasons why I don’t even discuss or listen to garbage from people unless they ACTUALLY WENT to the school they care about. I would like them to have matriculated at least a semester—but if they even GOT IN and then flunked out I deem them worthy of discussion, BUT!!!!!!!! if you MAYBE had the requirements to attend North Florida Community College College—Well, to me that is like those punky 9 year olds who live in Irmo, South Carolina and are New York Yankee fans.

Attend the school, hopefully graduate from the school, parlay that degree into a productive and enjoyable career, and donate money to the institution and you can talk all the smack in the world to me if YOUR school beats my school—of course graduates of the schools are usually sportsmanlike and civilized———but if you are a short order cook at Waffle House, are in lawn maintenance(and don’t own the company) or work at a mall selling shoes THEN I’m not discussing the merits of the team you root for because in reality you have as much basis for identification with that team as we all would have of rooting for Argentina in the next World Cup.

Mike Bobo 17 int. I guess you are going to claim a national championship for your school just because your coach won one 11 years ago. He also beat your team that year on Florida’s (not usc) way to the championship. Why don’t you and the rest of you lamecocks go celebrate your 1969 ACC championship and the entire four bowl games your team has won.

I have actually met Newt and heard him speak at a small fundraiser for a local elementary school. This guy is the real deal. He actually has strategies to solve all the problems that the Dems continually cry about. Don’t hate him because of his moral integrity… Listen to what he has to say. He makes more sense in a paragraph than Hillary or Osama Obama could make in an entire speech. On top of that, he’s a heck of a nice guy. GO NEWT!!

Dawgs will be running downhill on Rocky Top with 200+ yards rushing and 175+ yards in the air. Watch the two-headed monster set up the passing game. It’s gonna be a whipping! Dawgs 31, Vols 20. GO DAWGS!!

Gingrich, while likely far more competent than our current president and certainly a truer, more honest conservative, would be so petty and mean-spirited it would kill the country’s morale. We’ve seen this guy before… Man, you neo-conservatives are so dishonest with yourselves.

In any case, Joey should not take booing as personal… it’s an organizational thing, the way the Falcons find impossible ways to gravitate to sub-mediocrity. Vick, whom I hope doesn’t spend the next 50 years in jail because his stupidity makes him the perfect target for simultaneous legitimate, biased, and opportunistic prosecutions, does bear responsibility for the lowered expectations here… However, don’t look now, they get better every game. Petrino is earning my respect.

One clarification ….. Alabama did not “rat”ify the constitution. To quote legendary ‘Bama statesman Buford A. “Auburn” Tuscaloosa, “Why in ‘tarnation would someone take a wonderful document like that and ask us to put RATS in it??”

There are some fine schools in ‘Bama, but give me Georgia any day.

[No one would buy that paper though would they AJ-FREAKIN-C. I’m sure they just want to distract from the positives that CMR has brought to this program. Go DAWGS!] DWG, Surely you aren’t complaining that the AJC is not biased enough in favor of the DAWGS. Gimme a break! Other SEC teams can’t get an accurate description of a game to save their lives. For an outsider reading the AJC you would think the DAAWWGGS were national title contenders! Find a realistic place to put your indignation.

Although this isn’t supposed to be a political column, I was relieved to hear that Newt has decided not to run for president in 2008. We have so many misguided voters in this country (see George W. Bush, 2000, 2004) that he probably would have won.

Anyway, as a lifelong Falcons fan, I am proud of the way Joey Harrington has played under these extremely difficult situations. If he keeps playing the way he has, people will soon forget about that cold-blooded criminal who used to be our QB. What’s his name? Mike something. I can’t remember his name right now.

KrisG,

Gingrich is mean? Why, because he speaks truth to left-wing kooks? Gingrich isn’t mean just because he doesn’t spoon feed big government b.s. to you.

Here’s what’s mean and intellectually dishonest: Gingrich warning about the demise of Social Security, and Democrat spin-meisters taking his words out of context and claiming that Gingrich was promoting the death of SS. The same Dems who ardently oppose any reform to the failing system.

Sort of like Rush Limbaugh slamming Jesse McBath, a true “phony soldier”, and those words being spun into an attack against any soldier who disagrees with the war. That kind of meanness, and intellectual dishonesty (Rush is a hero among the non-phony soldiers, by the way.)

When Dems complain about the “mean” Republicans, me thinketh they doth protest wayyyyy too much.
