Schaub satisfies Birds’ munchies
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
And now, this update from the world of natural herbal remedies, while wondering why Michael Vick was ordered to wear an electronic anklet when a dog collar seems so much more appropriate.
A warehouse in Texas storing over 2,000 pounds of marijuana recently caught fire, causing firefighters to inhale fumes while extinguishing the blaze. None of the firefighters were drug-tested, but it’s believed to be the first time somebody actually tried to eat a tire, a hose and part of a barn.
Which leads us to this week’s revelation that Michael Vick flunked a drug test, reaffirming that his fake water bottle in the Miami airport must not have come with a fake urine sample.
It’s not known whether Judge Henry Hudson, who has never been high or even once giggled, will increase Vick’s expected jail time.
But with Vick, Mike Tyson and O.J. Simpson all potentially heading back to prison at about the same time, at least ESPN has the makings of another gutter-level Town Hall meeting. (Live From Leavenworth! It’s Saturday Night!)
What more wonderful timing for the Falcons. They’re 0-3 and the man who would replace Vick, Matt Schaub, returns to town with the Houston Texans.
I’m not necessarily advocating mind-altering substances. But when you’re a home underdog to the Texans, it’s a good time to escape reality. (Just do it before 10 p.m., because after that you’re confined to your house and you’re going to have send a friend out for the Nacho Cheese Doritos.)
Joey Harrington looked good last week. Or were those my clouds talking? Whatever. Smoke this: Falcons win one. (But take the three.)
Value meals
• Clemson at Fool Me Twice: Hello free-fall, my old friend. Georgia Yech outscored Notre Dame and Samford 102-17. Then they got slapped as favorites by Boston College and Virginia. At least this time the Jackets didn’t prolong the tease. They made the Cavaliers look good, which is something even Al Groh hasn’t been able to do. Must you ask? Clemson covers 4.
• Old Ms. at Georgia: For some reason, there’s concern that the Doggies may suffer some sort of letdown after letting the air out of the Saban balloon last week. Why? Just because Mississippi lost by only six points to Florida? The state has been built on “moral” victories since Vicksburg fell after two months. Or was that minutes? More of the same: Georgia covers 15.
• Bammy-FSU (in Jacksonville): If I understand this correctly, FSU has fired two academic advisers and implicated 23 athletes for cheating on tests given on the Internet, but none were football players who’ve actually played this season, which I guess means there’s a chance the Seminoles’ best players are cheaters but at least haven’t played yet, which is good for the future. Wait, that didn’t come out right. Take the gift 2-1/2 — but Alabama wins straight up.
• Auburn at Florida: The Gators could be missing two of their top weapons, Andre Caldwell and Percy Harvin. The Tigers lost to South Florida and Mississippi State. Checkmate! Gators cover 18 1/2.
• LSU at Tulane: When Tulane officials signed up for this game, did they get disability insurance written into the deal? Or did they just figure all of the LSU players would be working for the Tulane players one day anyway? Tigers win (duh), but I’m a sucker for 40 points.
• Bears at Lions: When he retires, Rex Grossman’s greatest career achievement will go down as turning Brian Griese into a viable option. Bears cover 2-1/2.
• Rams at Cowboys: Marc Bulger has bruised ribs, the Rams are 0-3 and owner Georgia “Dollar A Dance” Frontiere is running short on Face Spackle. Another 37 years of torture should even things up. (I’m from L.A. Still a little bitter.) Dallas wins 197-6.
• Steelers at Cardinals: Oh, and look: Allen Rossum returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown and didn’t get arrested, suspended, fined or stoned. He’d never make it here. Pitt covers the six.
• Chiefs at Chargers: Norv Turner (1-2) can tie Marty Schottenheimer (14-2) with a 13-game winning streak. Chargers cover 11-1/2.
• Raiders at Dolphins: If Miami (0-3) keeps losing, it can become the first franchise to go through seasons both winless and undefeated. On a related note, Ricky Williams has applied for reinstatement, but he can’t remember for what. Fish win one, but take the Raiders and 4.

Jeff Schultz I think if you had to write about something other than Michael Vick you wouldn’t know what to do. One more thing I heard you on the Stews a few weeks back wondering why anyone would think you were racist. Whenever you or any of your racist counterparts refer to African American athletes with the following words: thug, ghetto, trash, hip-hop or posse we know the racist train is right behind. If for some reason you fail to use any or all of those words you will surely refer to O.J. Simpson, Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson, Jesse Jackson or Rev. Al Sharpton. Don’t believe me take a look at some of the posts that are on the other sports blogs or that will likely be on this one. You can tell the people who simply don’t like the athlete (Vick, DeAngelo Hall to name two) versus those with racist agendas.
You, terrence moore and mark bradley are trying to make a career out of Michael Vick’s misery much the same way the legal analysts have been riding the O.J. gravy train for the last several years. Anytime his name comes up in the next few years I’m sure the first people called will be terrence moore followed by you, bradley and little chuck smith.
I do ask one favor from you and the other sports “journalists” at the AJC. Can you please just do one, only one follow-up on the Patrick Kearney case. You say Vick was exonerated at the Miami Airport but something about it wasn’t right. Even though the authorities down there cleared him your paper was still fishing for more information. Can you please do that just one time with the Kearney rape case. Your paper can give us chapter and verse on Schaub and his exploits since he left via free agency. How about doing a little digging on the Kearney rape case. Was a suspect ever named? What happened to the accuser? Was she paid off? Is the case closed or still being investigated? Couple of more things you may want to write about: In light of Hall’s 15 yard penalties Sunday and how he “cost” the Falcons the game can you do a story on how many games Bobby Cox “cost” the Braves on the way to his record setting 133 ejections? Also, how about a story on the impact the leader of the Falcon’s defense Keith Brooking is having on this years squad.

it is real simple mr.x bobby cox keith brooking and kearney have NEVER BEEN GUILTY OF COMMITTING ANY CRIMES, THREE OF THE FIVE YOU LISTED AS YOUR PICK FOR AS A ROLE MODEL HAVE!
MAYBE, IF THIS GROUP WOULD SPEND MORE IN SOLVING MAJOR PROBLEMS IN THE COMMUNITY AND LESS ON DEFENDING CRIMINALS ,IT WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE FOR ALL TO LIVE!

Never called anyone a role model if I’m not mistaken. My point if you cared to notice is most of the columnists have delved deeply into Michael Vick way before any allegations of dog fighting and for the record Mr. Simpson nor Michael Jackson have not been convicted of anything. Only Tyson is a convicted felon. The airport water bottle incident was worn out by Schultz but the rape accusation at Kearney’s have never been touched by schultz, bradley or moore. There were implications of a cover-up and payoffs with regard to the airport incident but no such accusations with regard to Kearney. Kobe Bryant made a financial agreement with his accuser to make his case go away so is it a stretch to thing the young lady in the Kearney case was paid off? Maybe it was & maybe it wasn’t my point is many in the community believe these writers aren’t as interested in “class” as they say.

As for Bobby Cox I didn’t say anything about him being a criminal I asked if Hall’s penalties “cost” the Falcon’s a game what impact has his ejections had on the Braves, seeing how he has been ejected more than any other player or manager in the history of MLB. But since you mentioned it, didn’t he beat his wife and have to go to violence and alcohol counseling?

To say the siege of Vicksburg lasted “two minutes” when in reality it spanned from May 18th to July 4th, 1863 is rude and offensive to the people of Mississippi, and makes you look downright ignorant to your own nations history.
Good Day Sir. I hope that in the future you can crack open a book and do some research before you shoot off at the mouth. Oh thats right, you’re a sports columnist. That just wouldn’t be your style.

Buz I stand up for what is right and not what is wrong. I’m not “crying” about anything just expressing my opinion like you, bradley and others. If you don’t agree with it thats cool. As for the comment about “making excuses” when did I make an excuse? Finally, you asked who the real racists are, stick around, they’ll show up and I promise you they will use the phrases that I mentioned in my earlier post.

Kearney is the one who called the police to report the rape! He came right out and explained as much as he could about what happened. He turned his friend into the police based on what the young lady said!
Did Vick come clean about anything? No. He lied and continues to lie to himself and everyone else about his actions. I pity him. The failed drug test this week my have cost him another year out of the league when it’s all said and done. I hoped he was growing up through all of this but it seems hopeless now.

And at the risk of actually discussing sports in one of these blogs…
I’m afraid you’re right about Tech Jeff. I’m not sure what happened, but sweet Moses you’ve really got to mail it in to look bad against the Cavaliers.
As much as it pains me to say, UGA looks solid and they’ll win handily. I don’t think the Falcons will pull this off though—I’ve seen NOTHING to suggest that in the first three games.
Wait—did you guys hear that? It was John Smoltz’s “big game” monicker flying out the window. What an awful showing tonight when we needed it most.

Ever since ajc.com opened these comments after every column, the collective IQ of its readers (both of us) has dropped 20 points. It’s amazing to me that a company like Cox would refuse to hire any sort of moderator to keep the riffraff (from BOTH sides) from dominating every conversation. On top of that, it makes Atlanta look like a city filled with nothing but screaming rednecks and street hoods, ready to brawl at a moment’s notice, but really too frightened to do anything but make anonymous posts baiting each other into a confrontation that can never happen. What a sad state of affairs. No wonder ESPN holds faux town hall meetings that make my city look ridiculous — idiots like the ones who fight on these message boards give them constant ammunition.

This is intolerable. To accuse this great nation of picking on Vick is digusting. Mr. Schultz speaks for us who founded this great land on decency and goodwill. It is deplorable to read the insults the writers at the ajc have to endure. Mr. Schultz and Moore were probally raised in the ghetto as Mr. Vick and beat the odds and did not give in to staying true to the people that made you who you are. No they turned there back on family and friends, moved down south where attitudes of the 19th century still have meaning. Yes down south where you can turn back time and lynch electronically instead of the old fashion methods. Leave these converted southern gentleman hockey lovers alone and let them do as men of there caliber, David Duke and Uncle Tom did before them.

I think all of you are racists. I watch football, in particular, I watch the Falcons. They are my team. If you go put on a red and black uniform for my team then I will root for you. I will pay my money to watch you play. Its because I am a fan. If you aren’t on the sidelines on Sunday then guess what, then your not helping my team and you’re the furthest thing from my mind. I honestly wish those of you with other agenda’s would take them somewhere else because I’ve grown weary of reading the crap and filth you post after every article. Better yet, maybe the AJC could sponsor a UFC fighting event for the people of ATLANTA (who probably didn’t grow up here)so each of you channel your aggression in other ways.

I think is was awful the way an Italian-American, Joe Torre, was treated by the fans and press when the Yankees where slumping early in the season. Now that the Yanks are in the playoffs, do you think one of the haters will apologize to him for their behavior? Would a Swede have been treated so? Of course not.

Hey ex falcon-you dance around issues like a democrat. Why don’t you face up to the community problems-always deflecting them-what happened with Kearney, what happened with Kearney? Kearney did not rape anyone, his friend was arrested-case closed! There is no new news about it. what do you want to see in the AJC? “this just in..there is no new news about the Pat Kearney home rape. the friend has been found guilty and has been serving time in jail for two weeks now. The convict ate his breakfast, worked out in the prison yard and is now sitting in his cell reading a book. More news when it comes in.” Is THAT what you want to hear/see? Get a brain! Better yet-Get an education! Jesse and Al are paying for every black person’s college if they attend NC A&T or what ever the name of the lying stripper’s college is. oh yes-Racist U! The fact remains, more blacks/athletes are thinking that they are above the law and are getting arrested. Why? Who knows. If they would be like Dunn, Rossum or Claude Humphrey, they’d be a lot better off. yes, I know the Humphrey’s. Both Claude and his wife are upstanding people who believe in taking responsibility for their actions and not blaming anyone for their failures.

I like how some people believe that the media/sports media is only all about digging into black athletes and that white athletes don’t come under any scrutiny.
Does anybody remember the Duke Lacrosse team debacle last year? Everybody, the media, the town of Durham and the team’s own school had jumped to judgement on those young men. And, by the way, they were white. I don’t see a lot of people blogging and still bringing that up 24/7.

In baseball, when you are ejected, they don’t give the other team runs or men on base. Would have been better if Hall had just been thrown out—but his 67-yards lead to the score which lead to the loss—that clear enough for you?

Normally all one needs to do to pick the winners of the weekends pigskin punch-outs is to go counter of Schultz’s predictions. However, I got smoked up last night and saw a vision: Schaub was harassed and hurried all day, MeAngelo the Mouth just shut up, and the Falcon’s offense did enough to win. OK, 2 outta 3 aint bad but I still think, despite the Schultz call, the Falcons get a “W”. Far fetched I know, but my gungie told me so.

Well, I guess Schultz is still trying to feel better about himself by taking more shots at Vick. By the way, to the racists that want to accuse those who bring light to their racism as “making excuses”…just because we call out your failure to criticize the likes of Kearney & Cox for their shortcomings the way you’ve done Hall & Vick doesn’t mean we’re excusing anything. Is that what a cry for justice & equal treatment is now…”excusing what’s wrong?” The problem is that all wrong is not given the same exposure.

I was at the Carolina game. Some questions: why did Petrino replace first half passing success with second half 3-and out running plays with, yes, you guessed it “Dunn up the middle” or Dunn for 3 yards? Also, with 5:00 left in the game and the Falcons needing two scores, who called the dinky running plays, ignoring the sidelines? We watched the clock wind down as the offense slowly lumbered back to the huddle for another running play. Am I wrong or is there some fundamental coaching/playing calling problem here? Maybe the team should stay on the field during halftime; let Joey call the plays. If what I saw was new coaching talent, I am very worried. Does anyone else share my views? Note, I am just a casual observer, not a football expert. Someone help me understand.

Who’s Michael Vick?
I read where they took a poll of the Falcons players and asked them how many of them actually work hard during football season. The answer was one out of four.
It will be a long seasons for the Falcons. Of course isn’t it always a long season for that bunch.

Ron Mexico
Not giving it his all (Carolina 2005)
Give the fans the finger (New Orleans, 2006)
Skipped an important meeting of congress because he didn’t feel like waiting for a later flight.
Him and his posse stole a watch at Atlanta airport.
He did not want to throw away a $15 water bottle at Miami airport because it had a dark particulate in it. (we know learn what that dark particulate is)
Funding a dog fighting operation
Illegal gambling
Tortured and killed dogs
Lied to the commissioner about involvement(I believe here if he would have confessed told the truth, he would not be in current situation)
Lied to owner, fans and city of Atlanta
After finally getting caught, he takes the plea deal thus make him a convicted felon.
During fake apology, he swears he will “change his life” and calls his actions “immature”. That is laughable.
Tested positive for marijuana thus likely increasing his sentence from one year to 2-3 years.
Now being investigated in connection with murder in North Carolina (no surprises here).
So, we have given this man 15 chances to redeem himself and he still does not get it. What a worthless human being.

One key fact you left out about the Falcons game. The Texans defense is no longer a joke. They’re young, fast, and they cause turnovers. Matt Schaub may be without Andre Johnson, but he won’t need to do much. Texans leave with the win, and Matt Schaub instantly takes his place alongside Brett Favre and Michael Vick in the “Falcons Hall of Shame.” DeAngelo Hall, you’re next.
